Bridge Installation Delayed by Winter Restrictions in Jackson State

by Alicia Bales November 23, 2021--Jackson Demonstration State Forest is roughly 50,000 acres of public land in the heart of Mendocino County, managed by CalFire. Although these state-owned woods are enjoyed by hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and foragers, JDSF is not a park. It was once industrial timber land, and continues to be logged by CalFire. A coalition of groups, including the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians and the Mendocino Trail Stewards, have called for a different plan for Jackson State. This summer, direct action protests including tree sits effectively shut down logging. And last week, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to ask the governor to review the JDSF management plan in light of the most current science on climate change. Although Mendocino County has been drenched by winter storms in recent weeks, the start of the rainy season does not mean the end of the conflict in the woods. From November 15th to April 1st, winter restrictions are in place to limit, but not stop, the work Calfire can do Jackson State. Crews are not allowed to use ‘ground based equipment' like tractors or yarders, anywhere but on surfaced roads while soils are saturated from winter rains. Kevin Conway is the Demonstration State Forest Program Manager for CalFire, and Erik Wahl is the Road Manager at JDSF. Part of their plan for winter operations in to install a multi-use foot bridge over Blue Gum Creek, a small watercourse in the heart of the Caspar 500 that flows into Caspar Creek. Last week they took KZYX News on a tour of the site, to clarify when and how the new bridge would be installed. The Blue Gum Trail follows Road 669, and abandoned logging road that was built by CalFire around 50 years ago. The challenge for CalFire is how to deliver the two-ton new bridge to the Blue Gum Creek Crossing. Conway explained that crews can cut down trees and cable yard them under winter operations, and deliver the bridge to the crossing site at Blue Gum Creek. They can't, however, install the bridge until Winter Ops ends on April 1st, due to winter restrictions on work close to waterways meant to prevent erosion into the creek. It is unclear how logging crews will move the cable yarder into place this winter, since the landing area where they intend to locate the machine is covered with down trees, and they aren't allowed to take tractors into the area to clear the site during the winter. Wahl and Conway hope that if the community understands more about their recreational work, such as the Blue Gum Creek pedestrian bridge and other trail improvements, that are part of the Caspar 500 timber harvest plan, they might be more supportive of the overall logging plans and less likely to try to slow things down. That was the big message Kevin Conway took away from last Monday's Board of Supervisors vote for a scientific review of the Jackson Management plan. He looks forward to "re-educating" the Board of Supervisors in a future workshop about Jackson.

Are you discontent even though everyone around you thinks you “have it all?” Lloyd Reeb, founding partner of Halftime Institute, is on a mission to help you ensure your next season in life is defined by joy, impact, and balance. Today, Lloyd will remind us of the importance of not just doing what is valuable, but doing what is priceless. Regardless of your age or what you can bring to the marketplace, Lloyd will encourage you to get clear, get free and get going. SHOW NOTES: How can your second-half be even more impactful, fun and joyful than the first half was? At 14-years-old, Lloyd's father helped him purchased a few acres of land, charging interest which taught him values. “What do I need to do to pass down the values of generosity, honesty, and hard work before passing the monies down.” A successful building developer inadvertently taught him the importance of significance beyond success. The exposure to what was happening around the world inspired Lloyd to serve or give back to others. Lloyd was introduced to Bob Buford, author of best-selling book Halftime. Because they naturally bracketed the movement of people wanting to renew themselves at mid-life, they created The Halftime Institute. “Sloppy busy”: Your calendar is full but you have a nagging lack of focus and leverage that you had in your career. Resist the temptation to start working on the solution and take the time to think through your core strengths. Gallup's Strengths Finder 2.0 played an important role in their children being heard. Get a copy or each other's strengths like I did with my family. Halftime is a remedy, not a strategy: Think about who you are and then the work you’ve been given. Don’t just jump in and get “sloppy busy.” Take time to reflect on who you are and the best place you can give back. Ask yourself: When was I at my best? What was the most painful experience in my life and what did I learn from it? Very often our pain from the past calls out a path for our future. Think about who you are and not the work. Valuable vs. priceless: On one side of the paper, write a list of all the valuable things your life. On the other side, write the priceless things. What are you doing to protect the valuable versus priceless things? The Halftime Institute: University for the second half of life, a place where people blessed with success, begin to explore how to make the second half even richer + fulfilling than the first half. Have a healthy mid-life renewal: Get clear, get free, get going. Intentionality: Lloyd strives to help other leaders be more intentional in not only how they give their time away but also building a world-class family.  If you enjoyed hearing how Lloyd is moving from success to significance, you'll love hearing Live Inspired Podcast guest Jill Blashack Strahan share how she created a successful business during a tragic season in her life on ep. 18. You'll also love hearing Live Inspired Podcast guest + graffiti artist Erik Wahl share how the dot-com bust in 2000 led him to reevaluate his life on ep. 80. LLOYD REEB'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Bible and Ordering Your Private World by Gordon McDonald. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? Curiosity. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? I have seven “Book of Days”. Every day, I keep an artifact of someone’s life that I’ve affected, touched or helped. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. Who would it be? Historian David McCullough. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My mom taught me it’s better to give than to get. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Marry Linda Walker. She's taught me relentless forgiveness. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? 100x: I’d like to take what I’ve been given and invest it so it produces 100 times that blessing or impact in other people’s lives. *** Did you enjoy today's episode? SHOW NOTES: I attribute a lot of things that have gone well in my life to being comfortable with getting uncomfortable, adapting, getting curious + having an addiction to change. "Amy Jo, come down to the [Phoenix Suns] locker room now! Shaq wants to Tweet and no one knows how but you." It's amazing what happens when we stop looking for permission. When I was 30, in a room consulting billionaires, I had a trick. I painted my nails red. It was a trigger, because when you lose confidence your head goes down. When I saw my nails, it was a reminder to look up + just own it. I had a purpose problem. Sometimes you are supposed to let things happen (instead of make them happen). How do you know the difference? Amy's Podcast "Why Not Now?" I got great advice from people I respect (Tony Robbins, Mark Cuban, Jessica Alba). I thought, I should record this to share with others. I realized there were probably many times my intuition was screaming at me and I needed to learn to listen. Great leaps in life come from intuition. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My great, great grandfather who was the founder of the city that I lived near by. I would ask him about intuition: How do you know how to make things happen v. letting them happen? 5. What is the best advice you've ever received? Be where your feet are. Be present. Don't borrow from yesterday or tomorrow. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? I would tell her that she has nothing to prove. 7. "It was good until it wasn't." Erik Wahl valued hard work and success. Achievement + money were his measurement and, by his early 30s, he was very successful in corporate America. Until he wasn't. During the dot-com bust in 2000, Erik lost the "financial fortress" he'd built and his identity along with it. This led him to ask the life-changing question:"Who were you before the world told you who you should be?" Erik answered this question, made BIG changes in his life + redefined success. Now, as a performance graffiti artist, he helps clients like IBM, Microsoft and Disney answer this bold question, too. Today, we're going to "unearth great things lying dormant inside" of you. Join us!  SHOW NOTES: Watch the entire episode on YouTube. Often we're rewarded based on the 3 Deadly P's: Power, prestige + possession.   Our script for how to live is off, we tend to live with a scarcity mindset. "I must secure what's mine so I can build; there's not enough available." Choose abundance instead. When you're rocked at your core foundation - financial, relational, health - you realize you long for something more. "As a speaker, I bypass the cynical brain + go straight to the heart. I stretch minds so we can see everything a bit differently." A mind stretched never returns to its original dimensions. Create for the sake of creating, not the finished product. I changed my definition of success: "What if success is a good meal with my wife and boys at the end of the day? I don't need certain life elements to be a certain way to be successful." Today, Erik is a performance graffiti artist. Check out John's behind the scenes tour of Erik's studio. Opportunity for love, relationship and empathy are hidden in plain sight. Don't be too "successful" to see them. Better leaders are more creative + adapt to change. Everyone is creative, but our creativity is hidden in uncertainties + the quietness of life... a space we don't often enter. Creativity, like gratitude, is a discipline. Embrace the choice to be creative like you embrace doing other difficult things. When asked "Who here is an artist?" Every hand goes up when we're kids, very few as adults. Why? Hear Erik's answer. "Let go of the idea that we 'earn value' through how we perform on paper, what college our kids go to, what car we drive." How do I pivot into this? Look at your life + values. Are you living a life of success or significance? Does your calendar reflect your priorities? Art is an exploration of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable. Can I get out and dance with my wife and not let the critics or my own internal voice of judgement stop me from the enjoyment of moving with someone I love? How do we encourage the next generation to hold tight to their crayons? Commission your child to create. While doodling, they're thinking expansively + problem solving, not for a grade. "Paint a picture of what you want to be when you grow up, and I'll take you for ice-cream... Write a poem about how much you love your mom, and I'll take you to a game." Ask questions about your child's creation. It gives you insight to who they are. Spontaneity is a mini lab to practice living present in the now. Follow Erik at www.TheArtofVision.com Demarius "found" Erik's first geo-cached painting.  Erik dedicated his books Unthink and The Spark & The Grind to his wife and business partner, Tasha. For those of us enduring a trying season in our marriage, what would you say? Focus on why you got married, to: Lift each other up, help your spouse become the very best, become better as two then we could be as one. You entered into it with excitement, love and lust; revisit those emotions.  It's how you act and react to bumps in the road that defines your marriage. ERIK WAHL'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Soul of Money by Lyn Twist. It changed my relationship with what had been a dominant identity for me. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do with it? Decreasing my wants and needs has been the most fiscally conservative policy I could have taken on. We'd use it to give to others; build traction for someone else's vision.. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? One of my wife's photo albums because I know how much she would want those and I want to see her face when I come out with it in hand! 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? St. Francis of Assisi, he came from a life of privilege and chose a life of connectedness. I'd want to talk with him about that transition + experience. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Be present.  6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Don't be so guarded around shaping your identity; you have no idea of what this future "you" will be doing in life... thinking you know is a recipe for challenge. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. Summary & Ideas for Action Erik Wahl is an internationally recognized artist, TED speaker, bestselling author, and a sought-after corporate speaker. Erik’s on-stage painting and performance seamlessly becomes a visual metaphor to the core of his message: Encouraging organizations toward profitability through innovation and superior levels of performance. He discusses with Jim and Jan the thought leadership that differentiates him from Powerpoint presenters and concludes with a vision for unity at work and in our communities.   Key Takeaways [4:11] The psychology of performance depends on attention. Erik’s audience has seen hundreds of presentations. To differentiate himself, Erik doesn’t simply present, he prepares a real-time improv experience with lights, cameras, audio, painting, technology, and other techniques to engage the audience. He gives the audience actionable takeaways using the tools of live theater. [5:25] Through unique channels Erik creates ‘aha’ moments and ‘wow’ experiences to show audiences how to implement leadership, teamwork, differentiation, innovation, and creativity a little differently.  [6:11] The ability to adapt is the most needed strength for leaders. No system will work in perpetuity. There will always need to be an adaptation as circumstances change. Change is constant. Expand consciousness. Think differently. Master complexity at a higher level. Step back and see the landscape from a bigger picture view. [8:03] Look at ways to elevate your value proposition and build authenticity into your relationships with employees and customers. Disrupt yourselves to differentiate from the competition. Erik’s core pillars fall under the umbrella of thinking differently, the psychology of performance, and the ability to adapt. [9:25] Erik discusses current thinking and ‘Thinking 2.0.’ Our trained thinking is pragmatic, logical, and practical. It represents standardization and Six Sigma. It is transactional rather than interactive. The problem is that we get stuck in systems that become out-of-date. To adapt to new circumstances we need think in new ways and find new rhythms. Understand the rules to reshape the rules. [14:02] Science has necessary but finite and limited functions. EQ, art, and intuition are all now more important than ever.  [16:53] School has standardized children’s thinking. It is important to learn to think but also to have a fluidity to come up with more than one right answer. The more operationally efficient we become, the more danger we have of losing potential and possibilities. We need an increased element of fluidity in our learning systems and business systems. [21:02] As leaders, the ability to read people is incredibly valuable. Because of the business costs of failed decisions, leaders are often more comfortable with tried and true formulas rather than adaptation. Leaders walk a balance between strength and authenticity; analytics and emotional intelligence. [23:44] Creativity requires rational systematic thought. Creatives need to learn more about the marketplace and how to add value to get market share. [25:31] As an athlete, Erik learned mental toughness was to endure pain and hardship. Now he believes the highest level of mental toughness is the ability to control emotion in the face of uncertainty, danger, and fear, to be unflinchingly calm in the face of the most challenging situations, and to know when to move quickly. [27:25] There is disruption, fear, anger, and social injustice in the world. We need to address these issues properly to unify. We need to know when to stand down. As a CEO, when you talk less and listen more, you demonstrate empathy and grace that is more helpful now than it was 30 years ago. Be tolerant of everyone’s input for a better unified tomorrow. The more unity, the more people will sacrifice for the good. [32:53] Combining multiple generations in the workplace involves meshing the ideals of meritocracy and hierarchy with authenticity and autonomy. CEOs need to know how the younger generation thinks, to get their attention and guide them in leadership strategies.   Quotable Quotes   “Create ‘wow’ experiences that show the message as much as tell it.”   The more operationally efficient we become, we risk losing potential and possibilities.   Understand the rules to reshape the rules.   A leader must balance between confidence and humility and between analytics and creativity.   Creativity without discipline is like a river without banks.   Diversity in the workplace involves meshing the ideals of meritocracy and hierarchy with authenticity and autonomy.     Website: TheArtOfVision.com/the-spark-and-the-grind Website: TheArtOfVision.com Twitter: @ErikWahl Facebook: Erik Wahl LinkedIn: Erik Wahl YouTube: Erik Wahl Vimeo: The Art of Vision   Bio Erik Wahl is an internationally recognized artist, TED speaker, and No. 1 bestselling author. His breakthrough experience as an artist and entrepreneur has translated into making him one of the most sought-after corporate speakers on the circuit today.   On stage, Erik’s keynote experience creates a dynamic multidimensional metaphor for how to systematically embrace innovation and risk. His message: disruption is the new normal and businesses must embrace creativity in a wholesale fashion or risk being left behind. Erik’s presentation inspires organizations to be increasingly agile and outlines how to use disruption as a competitive advantage. Some companies will be disrupted; others will choose to be the disruptor. Choose wisely.   His new book, The Spark and the Grind, activates the essential components of translating ideas into action. His breakthrough thinking has earned praise from the likes of top influencers in both art and business. Erik’s previous book, a bestseller called Unthink, was hailed by Forbes Magazine as the blueprint to actionable creativity, and by Fast Company Magazine as “provocative with a purpose.”   The Warhol of Wall Street, the Renoir of ROI, the Picasso of Productivity, the Jobs of ... well, Jobs. Erik discovered an alarming truth early in his career as a partner in a corporate firm — organizations that encouraged the mental discipline of creativity did better than those that did not put innovation as a priority mission. So he set out to challenge companies to change their way of thinking.   In the meantime, inspired by street art, he became an acclaimed graffiti artist — though he has since stopped selling his work for personal gain, and instead uses his art to raise money for charities. His keynote is where his passion for business growth and art converge into a fascinating performance.   Erik’s list of clients includes AT&T, Disney, London School of Business, Microsoft, FedEx, Exxon Mobil, Ernst & Young, and XPrize.   Books Mentioned on the Show The Experience Economy, by B. He believed that if he got straight A’s he would be successful later on in life. Things generally worked out for him–until the Dot-com bubble hit. He was devastated and realized he needed to figure out a new way to live. Erik started meeting artists rather than business types. He came to find that mainstream society does not understand artists and because of this, many of these people would become, for lack of a better term, “tortured artists.” The love of art is what launched him into work as a professional artist. Art was not about producing a product but rather about a new way of thinking. He began processing information in a whole new way, not just linear. Everyone has creative ideas. What sets people apart is how they chose to leverage and use it. When Erik does any presentation he starts off creating a painting on stage to rock music in 3 minutes. He is disrupting thinking by showing the audience rather than telling them. Unless you know how to use agility and mental dexterity you will be left behind. Erik teaches how to tap into creativity and adapt to the increasing rate of change happening in the world. “There's a necessary amount of suffering that needs to happen for new ideas or new work or change to happen. If I don't suffer, I won't know what joy or contentment is. If I flatline, then I won't be able to experience it as deeply. And the cracks are where the light shines through. The cracks, weaknesses, suffering and pain are what allow for new growth. Change is actually good. It doesn't feel good. But it actually leads us to new places…Every person of significance has experienced deep and painful setbacks or heartbreak or suffering to get to the next level to be able to get to the next space of awareness.” – Erik WahlErik Wahl is an internationally recognized graffiti artist, author of the book Unthink, and speaker who redefines the term “keynote speaker” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
