Jason explains the difference between PR and advertising and why PR is so effective compared to advertising. Jason also shares an example of how it is important to take a holistic approach to your marketing or PR strategy.   3:18 – Jason explains how he took the “traditional” path to PR by starting his career as a journalist.   12:34 – Jason shares some common PR mistakes, including most people not knowing what PR is.   19:16 – Jason talks about his podcast and public speaking.   20:27 – Jason reviews some PR topics, tips and trends he is passionate about.   29:58 – Jason explains the difference between PR and advertising.   36:38 – Jason continues by talking about why PR is more of a long game compared to advertising.  40:37 – Jason shares some resources that have been helpful to him.    Quote   “Every once in a while, I try to disrupt that process and say, 'Hey, let's stop doing something, or let's do less and try to accomplish more.' Doing less means we're more focused and we might be able to do more or get more value out of it. For a while, I disrupted our engine and I started removing pieces from the equation. We cut back on the number of episodes of podcasts we were producing, we cut back on our Google AdWord spend and things like that. We cut back on the amount of PR we were doing for ourselves and then we noticed our inbound leads are down. Right? What happened? Then we started slowly adding things back. What we've discovered is it doesn't seem to matter what we bring back, it needs everything. It needs a holistic approach to work its best.” – Jason Mudd, CEO and Managing Partner at Axia Public Relations    Links:   Safe Harbor Boys Home: https://safeharboracademy.com/   Heroic Public Speaking: https://heroicpublicspeaking.com/   Listen to learn more about AI in PR:  Episode 234: The Future of AI in Public Relations, With Parry Headrick and Chris Penn  Episode 239: The Latest on SEO, Content Marketing and AI, With Dale Bertrand, Founder and President of Fire&Spark  How our PR firm is using AI and how you can too with Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations  “The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR” by Al and Laura Ries: https://www.amazon.com/Fall-Advertising-Rise-PR/dp/0060081996  “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Workweek-Escape-Live-Anywhere/dp/0307465357   “The 4-Hour Body” by Timothy Ferriss: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Body-Uncommon-Incredible-Superhuman/dp/0307704610   “Brandscaping” by Andrew M. “Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it,” shares AJ Harper, editor and publishing strategist, head writing coach for Heroic Public Speaking, writing partner to business author Mike Michalowicz, and author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. Today, AJ calls on her years of experience working with bestselling authors to talk about how to write a must-read book. The first step to writing a book is knowing who your reader is. By knowing exactly who you are writing for, what they need, and what they perceive is standing in their way, you can write a book that speaks directly to their experience. When people feel seen on the first page of a book, they are likely to continue reading. The next step is to get very clear on your core message. This should be a fundamental truth that can create change in the reader even if that message is the only thing they read. Once you have written a book with a specific reader in mind and a clear core message, the most important thing to do is just to not give up! Stay persistent and put the time and work into your publishing plan and marketing strategies for selling your book.If you have been wanting to write a book that will help other people, you need to first decide who exactly you want to write for. What change are you hoping for the reader to make? How do you want them to feel when they read your book? These are all things to consider before getting to the publishing or marketing steps. Quotes“If you're writing a book that's designed to help someone, you have to know who that someone is.” (8:33-8:37 | AJ)“If they can see themselves on the first page where you are honoring their experience and they feel like you get them, they're going to keep turning the page.” (10:38-10:48 | AJ)“Knowing your reader is such a huge part of not just writing and editing the book, but how you position it in the marketplace.” (11:50-11:56 | AJ)“A book is not about something, it's for someone.” (12:30-12:33 | AJ) “Most authors give up too soon. They give up before they finish their book, they give up on their publishing plan, because it takes too long. And then if they do manage to get their book to market, they give up on selling it.” (28:42-28:56 | AJ)“There's very few things on earth that are more transformational than a book.” (35:18-35:23 | AJ)LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with AJ HarperLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anjanetteharper/Website: https://ajharper.comConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com ,

“When you realize that you can have a tremendous emotional, psychological, and intellectual impact on the people in a room through performance, all of a sudden the way that you go about your work changes dramatically,” shares Michael Port, CEO and Co-Founder of Heroic Public Speaking. Today, Michael explains how to build a professional speaking career. In order to create transformational change in the way people think and act, you first have to change the way they feel. The speakers who are the most successful at this are the ones who are able to perform with honesty. All performances are manufactured in a sense, but that does not mean they cannot be done with honesty in a way that connects with and moves the audience. Being able to combine entertainment with your insights is a great way to keep the audience engaged and get your message across.A successful transformative speech takes time. You must really commit to the process and spend time practicing and reworking your speech. You cannot just wing it and expect to be a memorable speaker.Quotes“If you want to change what people do, you need to change how they think first. And if you want to change how people think, you need to change how they feel first.” (6:12-6:23 | Michael)“The key is that performance is manufactured, but the people who do it the best are the ones who do it with honesty.” (17:33-17:40 | Michael)“When you realize that you can have a tremendous emotional, psychological, and intellectual impact on the people in a room through performance, all of a sudden the way that you go about your work changes dramatically.” (19:58-20:17 | Michael)“The expectation should be that it may take a year to produce a speech that is ready to be sold for $25,000.” (26:25-26:34 | Michael)“Usually things that create significant change require the person who created that thing also change.” (28:14-28:20 | Michael) LinksConnect with Welcome to ElomaInstagram: @welcometoelomaWebsite: WelcometoEloma.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmail Connect with Michael PortWebsite: www.heroicpublicspeaking.comInstagram: @heroicpublicspeakingConnect with KileySocial: @kileypeters + Linkedin.com/in/kileypetersWebsites: RAYNEIX.com , BrainchildStudios.com, KileyPeters.comWeekly Email Newsletter: bit.ly/RIXEmailEmail: info@rayneix.com

I've been sharing a lot of behind-the-scenes of what it takes to write, publish, and promote a book. But one thing that often gets overlooked in the writing process is editing. I like this quote from Mike Lee where he says, “The first draft reveals the art; revision reveals the artist.”  Today, I get cozy with editor and publishing strategist AJ Harper. In this episode, we talk about how authors can find their voice, write books based on the change you want to see in the world, and why it's important not to give up in the dip when marketing your book. AJ Harper helps authors write transformational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. As ghostwriter and as developmental editor, she has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. Jen Singer is a ghostwriter, speechwriter, writing coach and developmental editor with a whole bunch of stories to tell.  As a writing coach at TEDx Cambridge, one of the world's largest independently-organized TED platforms, she has helped dozens of speakers get their stories “on their feet” in front of an audience. Whether writing for the page or the stage, she believes the message is the medium. “A good speech is a good performance,” she says, “but it starts with good writing.”  One of the original “mom bloggers,” Jen wrote on parenting issues for over fifteen years on www.mommasaid.net – a gig that led to a two-year stint as the author of the “Good Grief” blog for Good Housekeeping. Over the years, she has also written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Parents, Woman's Day, and McSweeney's, while writing several books of her own and launching her career as a book doctor and collaborator.  Somewhere in there, coinciding with her own diagnosis of Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, she shifted her focus from parenting issues to medical issues – a shift that came about while she was blogging on potty training issues for Pull-Ups.  “June is National Potty-Training Month,” she recalls, “and I was in the hospital measuring my urine for my doctor…It was surreal.”   Jen saw the humor in that surreal moment, but she also saw opportunity, and she started working as a medical writer for NYU Langone Health, Northwell Health, Hospital for Special Surgery, and Weill Cornell Medicine. Her experience as a cancer survivor led her to write a series of e-books called "The Just Diagnosed Guides: What You Need to Know Now (without Googling it)," designed to help patients and families navigate the uncertainty that finds them after a difficult diagnosis. In addition to her work with TEDx Cambridge, Jen also works as a writing coach and editor for Heroic Public Speaking, a leading public speaking training program, where she has worked with a wide range of clients, including CEOs, Olympic athletes, educators, fighter pilots, marketing experts, physicians, psychologists, Ivy League researchers and professors, and undercover FBI agents. This week, I spent three days (and joyful evenings) with other thought leaders, each working to bring our new keynotes to life with the brilliant team at Heroic Public Speaking. I had a great week and did some fantastic work, but I started to feel a little down on myself once I left. I didn't feel like writing this morning. Spending three days with other thought leaders can trigger comparisonitis (comparison syndrome). They have how many LinkedIn followers??!!Any one of you could go to a conference of peers, or even read 5 Things and think, “That is such a cool thing that company X is doing…my company stinks and isn't doing anything significant with DEI.” Or worse: ”They're such a great leader…I stink compared to them…”Comparisonitis. Comparison has been called the thief of joy – and it causes stagnation. I can't fulfill my purpose to build a world where people feel safe to be authentically themselves if I let comparison drag me down. What I have to remind myself is that each step I take toward my vision matters.Screw comparisonitis. There will always be those ahead of you and trust me, there will be many others just starting out. Each step you take towards more significant equity and inclusion matters – as an individual, and as an organization. Even simple things like intentionally connecting with people who are different from you, builds momentum that can be world-changing, and life-changing.If you find yourself stuck because of comparisonitis or anything else, reply to this email. Seriously. I read every response and I'll get back to you ASAP. Oh, and as much as I hate to admit it, external validation helps…so if you listen to the 5 Things in 15 Minutes podcast, will you do me a favor, rate, and review? Here are the good vibes I found this week:Championing Authenticity and Equity: Inside and Outside of YelpWalmart to Cover Fertility Treatments Under Insurance PlanHow Employers Can Set Formerly Incarcerated Workers Up for SuccessThe Who Says Gender-Affirming Care Is Essential to Transgender HealthCVS Drops Prices on Its Tampons and Will Pay the ‘Pink Tax' Read the full blog hereClick here to learn more about Simone and Your Choice Coach Join thousands of readers by subscribing to the 5 Things newsletter. Our Heart Value can serve us and others in so many ways. You can transfer a huge amount of encouragement or empowerment by confidently telling the story of your True Stride. This episode talks about how to write your story for the peeps in your life that matter most. AJ Harper is an editor and publishing strategist who helps authors write transformational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. As a ghostwriter and as a developmental editor, she has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. She is the Head Writing Coach for Heroic Public Speaking, the premier speaker training program created by Michael and Amy Port. She is writing partner to business author Mike Michalowicz. AJ is also the author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. On EP 76's Wise Walk, AJ and I discuss how you can find your truth and write a story that speaks directly to people who resonate with you. I know from experience, since Heart Value would not be here without AJ. She challenged me to explore my heart-centered passions and tap into the value I wanted to give to Striders. AJ understands how to balance the needs of authors and readers to protect an author's true intentions. On our Wise Walk, open your mind to realize your vision for your book and learn to not compromise on what value you want to provide for readers. You'll get useful ideas on breaking past myths and releasing the lies we tell ourselves that keep us from fully engaging our work. We're dispelling book publishing misinformation and sharing how book writing can be a reflective process. Come with me as we reflect on AJ's fundamentals and these Wise Walk questions: Who is your ideal reader? Who are the people you want to help? What is your core message? What is a promise you can commit to and deliver on? AJ believes that if an author is struggling to get past the outline or the first chapter of their book, they're probably not writing the book they're meant to write. You have something inside of you that you want to share. You need to find out how to pull away the false filters that distort your message. You should only want filters that honor your truth and cut out distractions. Advocate for yourself and write great books with these Wise Walk questions: How connected are you to your voice? Where in life are you adopting someone else's voice? Where can you exercise validating your own voice and style? What are the myths you adopted as you grew up, and how can you find your actual truth? Join this inspiring community to uncover a new sense of freedom, and be sure to follow and review the True Stride podcast as we continue to exchange our light and Heart Value with each other.   In this episode: [00:23] - Welcome to the show! Description: In this week's episode, I am speaking with AJ Harper, author of  Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. If you have thought of writing a non-fiction book this is the book for you. I have already recommended this book to several people as it will make the task far less daunting and more importantly help you write a book that delivers. Her bio is as follows: AJ Harper is an editor and publishing strategist who helps authors write transformational books that enable them to build readership, grow their brand, and make a significant impact on the world. As a ghostwriter and as a developmental editor, she has worked with hundreds of authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors with millions of books sold. AJ teaches her method in Top Three Book Workshop and the Must-Read Editing Workshop. She is the Head Writing Coach for Heroic Public Speaking, the premier speaker training program created by Michael and Amy Port. She is a writing partner to the business author, Mike Michalowicz. Together they've written nine books, including Profit First. AJ is the author of Write a Must-Read: Craft a Book That Changes Lives--Including Your Own. Connect with her at AJHarper.com. I am pitched a lot of books for this podcast. I have turned down some prominent authors because I thought the books did not deliver on what they promised. I think they should have read this book as you will hear, AJ gives you a pretty easy system to follow to keep on track to write a book that delivers. That does not mean it is easy to do but it is an excellent system. I am currently reading a similar book Find Your Red Thread: Make Your Big Ideas Irresistible by Tamsen Webster that I mention during the episode. It discusses a similar process to refine your ideas that I have found useful. For the full show notes and resources mentioned in the episode click here.

There's a big difference between being rich and being wealthy. Rich people spend what they have. Wealthy people, however, leverage what they have to produce more wealth. But how much money is really enough? And what's driving our constant need for more? These are the types of financial questions I ask my good buddy, Michael Port, on today's podcast episode. More specifically, we're digging into money management as family men with businesses.     For context, he's written multiple bestselling books. He's also the co-founder of Heroic Public Speaking, a super successful company that he bootstrapped  and scaled with his wife, Amy. While there's more than one way to build wealth & legacy , I have a major appreciation for Michael's approach to financial freedom. Rather than follow the crowd, he constantly pursues the best path for him after spending years studying different approaches to creating financial independence.  We talk about what makes his business profitable, setting budgets with his wife, avoiding get-rich-quick schemes, and how he empowers his kids to manage their own finances. We help Dads become family men with businesses, not businessmen who have families, so they can thrive personally AND professionally.
