Thrive By Design: Business, Marketing and Lifestyle Strategies for YOUR Jewelry Brand to Flourish and Thrive

What are you done with?    To answer this profound question, this week we've got a special double-barrel episode release on the Thrive by Design podcast — How to Double Your Sales in Half the Time, and How to Know When You're Done — And What to Do Next.    Both episodes are intended to shake you up out of the parts of your life where you're stuck and know it's time for a change.   Asking what I was done with in my own ‘rock bottom' moment back in 2008 started me on the journey to the life and business I have today.   I was 40, and in total shock after the recession crashed my business overnight, taking my confidence with it. The guy I'd been dating for 3 years ghosted me. I went on vacation with two girlfriends to Nicaragua and couldn't afford to do everything they wanted to do, and then on top of it all I got stung by a stingray at the beach one day.   Ugh.   I'd had enough. I was so done being broke, being taken for granted, being afraid.   On that trip I realized that I had no choice but to start doing things differently.    I invested in coaching so I could get super clear about what I wanted from my business.    I quit dating people who didn't truly care about me so I could make space for someone who did.    I stopped taking custom orders from people who were not going to pay me and focused everything on building an online platform for the people who would.   And in a few months, everything was different.    If you are so ready for everything to be different, I have an invitation for you.   Next week we are launching our last live season of Train Your Customers to Buy from You Online. We are closing enrollment on Monday 29th April, and classes begin Tuesday 30th.   If you've been on the fence about applying to TYC, this is your sign.    If you're done missing time with your family, scrambling to make ends meet, and bending over backwards to make your business work, it's time to make a change.    Be done with all that.    Listen to episode #470 and #470B of Thrive by Design to get your all-access pass to How to Double Your Sales in Half the Time and How to Tell When You're Done.   Then come back here and click here to apply to TYC: https://www.flourishthriveacademy.com/tyc/    Don't miss this. Hunter Niland Welling is a professional organizer turned luxury marketing expert and the founder of The AgenShe. For the past 6 years, she's created exceptional marketing strategies for high-end service providers who want to scale without losing their "special touch." Her private coaching and membership community help you turn the business you have into the business you want. A cat mom + plant mom + dog mom + human mom, she lives in a tiny bungalow in Fort Worth, Texas.   Here's what we covered on the episode:    Hunter's Background in Marketing   How Hunter and I first connected in Erika Lyremark's Mark'd Women  Mastermind, now called Marketing Crush, when I posted in our Facebook group that I was looking for some accountability partners  Hunter shares that she worked for a trend forecasting firm in high school, where she got to do a lot of marketing and copywriting, and says she leveraged that job into other marketing positions   After graduating college, Hunter was offered a lot of head of communication or marketing positions but felt burnt out from college due to personal circumstances and needed a breather  To reset, Hunter decided she needed to do something with her hands and body instead of sitting in front of a computer screen, so she started a professional organizing business that she loved Hunter decided to go back to her zone of genius - she started making connections and started mentoring and doing marketing for luxury home organizers, which has expanded to other industries over the years  How Hunter got her job at the trend forecasting firm and how saying yes to that opportunity gave her the confidence she needed to leverage that job at college, where she started freelancing, blogging for the university career services, and started figuring out the online world Working at the trend forecasting firm gave Hunter hands-on business experience and says she was teaching herself how to run QuickBooks, what tax filings were due, and what you had to do to stay in compliance, all of which made ownership seem less scary and like something she could do for herself  After graduating in 2010, Hunter started joining some online Facebook groups, which are where she found this whole world of people who were building online businesses  The first thing Hunter did when she started her marketing business was manage social media because she realized a lot of her business owner friends would ask her advice about social media, and she was giving that information away for free  The first social media management job Hunter had was for a friend who was a fine art photographer - her job was to help sell his fine art book through social media, and she ended up helping him build a thriving online community of tens of thousands of people   Hunter gained confidence after successfully helping her friend, so she reached out to a high-end professional organizer and said she wanted to get to know them and collaborate, and that relationship led to Hunter mentoring hundreds of professional organizers  Changing Business Models + Personal Needs in Business For the last two years, Hunter shares that she's been primarily working with her clients through recurring intensives   In 2019 Hunter burnt out again after running her business for 3 years and shares she was doing traditional marketing on retainers where she felt that she was on call for clients all the time - after being put on bedrest, Hunter knew she couldn't keep running her business the same way Hunter shares she was selling strategy and consulting sessions, but when she started offering VIP days, her clients loved it, and it helped Hunter feel like she wasn't on call so much Hunter realized the sales cycle for selling VIP days to earn the revenue she needed was as exhausting as the retainers, so she talked to our mutual friend, Erika, who suggested keeping VIP days but signing clients up to come back every month      Next, Hunter created her service, The Exceptionelle CMO, where she would meet with clients once a month to work on their marketing strategy, map out their plan, and then spend the rest of the day working in an intensive format, building out their social media or copywriting, whatever they needed to move the strategy forward     How Hunter got her first round of clients by sending an invitation to her top 5 favorite clients, most of which took her up on it  Each month, Hunter works with anywhere from 3 - 6 clients but says right now, she's setting herself up to take a sabbatical in her business to refresh herself but will pick back up in 2022 How Hunter has had to learn to work with her own energy needs and chronic illness because she knows she is susceptible to burnout and speaks about ways to avoid it for people on their journeys  When it comes to planning her sabbatical, Hunter says she's been able to save up the cash reserve she needs, hire another team member, and has planned for the upcoming year and plans to take about a month off  Women tend to think they need to do it all, but Hunter shares that she has always leaned on teams for support, a housekeeper, and a stay at home partner to help her as well because she knows she can't do it all  By implementing recurring intensive, Hunter was able to focus on her business with the extra time she had instead of solely focusing on her clients business The most important thing business owners can do is ask themselves how they want to do work, what they want it to feel like, what they want to be doing with their time, and then get creative and experiment with business models to fit that We talk about how it can be good to expand where you're getting your information and inspiration from   Adapting Your Business for Your Future  Hunter shares that she has had a hunger for creativity and mentions that she loves Martha Stewart and the lifestyle magazine style, so she and her team are working on ways to prioritize that   The magazine has been brought to life through Hunter's membership called, The AgenShe Club, and it includes weekly emails, best practices, strategies, ideas, and questions you can use to make your business a little kinder to your body and turn the business you have into the business you want  I discuss how and why I will be shutting down my sales page service - no one will be able to hire me for a sales page project alone, but there will be other services that could be bundled into the new offer that I'm working on  How it's scary to be getting rid of my sales page offer, but it makes sense with the direction I want to go  I share that some of my dream jobs include creative directing photoshoots for SNL or working with The Kardashians on a photoshoot, along with so many other things  Hunter shares that they've been reimagining what it will look like and the way she will work with clients when she comes back from her sabbatical   How you can go on over to the AgenShe on Instagram, where you will find a link to join The AgenShe Club, and if you use the code: design, you can join for your first year for free Hunter talks about her workshop called the Recurring Intensive Workshop, where she teaches you everything she knows about running a business and selling Connect with Hunter on Instagram or check out her website   Links mentioned   The AgenShe   The AgenShe Club   Connect with Hunter on Instagram    Recurring Intensive Workshop     Like what you heard?  Click here to subscribe + leave a review on iTunes. Erika showed early entrepreneurial skills when she let her brother throw a pie in her face for $5, she wheeled and dealed her way through high-school, earned degrees in Apparel Design and Women Studies (with an emphasis on China Studies), spent 9 years swinging around a dancer pole, went on to co-create a multi-eight-figure dollar commercial real estate investment company (of which she's still a partner), wrote a best-selling book, Think A Stripper: Business Lessons To Up Your Confidence, Attract More Clients & Rule Your Market. And in 2009 launched The Daily Whip where she's helped thousands of entrepreneurs grow their businesses through BOLD marketing & sales. For over 15 years, Nicole has helped artists and entrepreneurs build their audiences through PR, creative direction, marketing campaigns and paid media. She's also coached over 800 entrepreneurs on how to do their own paid advertising and build their sales funnels. From opt-in to sales page to launch, she's helped build multiple 6 and 7-figure businesses from the ground up, as well as help scale sales for NY Times Best-Selling Authors, well-known influencers, course creators, and creative entrepreneurs from all over the world. Her clients call her the Swiss Army Knife of marketing. Her friends call her addictive. Here's what we covered on the episode:  Forming the Marketing Crush Partnership We first met Nicole on episode 78 and Erika on episode 47 of The Design Business Show How I have known Erika and Nicole for the last few years, have worked closely with them and how in the last year they have created a partnership together which they'll talk about today along with some bold marketing trends they think people should know about Erika tells the story of how she and Nicole met through me and how they formed their partnership Nicole took Erika's TripleXpert Program, her Mastermind and then became a private client – the more Erika got to know Nicole, the more she realized she wanted to work with her How Erika hired Nicole to do Facebook ads for her triple expert program that she launched last year and says Nicole was the first person that made Facebook ads fun and exciting Erika approached Nicole about doing Marketing Crush and she said absolutely, so they launched Marketing Crush in March to a super small list When they first started Marketing Crush it was about creating content and creating a content plan, but as they developed it more, they realized people were not set up for success in their sales funnel, so they changed the business to focus on that and Erika says Nicole is very skilled when it comes to anything involving sales funnels When people sign up for Marketing Crush, they get Erika as their content coach, marketing strategist, creative director, and says on Tuesdays she works with clients on their content plans, and on Thursdays, Nicole is helping people with everything sales funnel related Erika talks about how the online space has changed throughout the years and how it can be really hard to keep up which is why marketing is so important One of the things they always tell their clients is, when you're creating content that is beautifully aligned with what you do, what you're doing is creating a marketing asset that you can reuse again and again Nicole talks about how she took my Conversion Design School program which is where a lot of her ideas and inspiration comes from The biggest challenge Erika and Nicole have had with Marketing Crush is creating an Instagram page for it and Erika explains why that is, so they've decided that this point in their venture, they are not going to create a Marketing Crush Instagram page but instead use it as a billboard space  Bold Marketing Trends A lot of Nicole's inspiration comes from social justice and politics, while Erika's inspiration comes from the Kardashians, and we talk about how the Kardashians have established their businesses, marketing, social media, and brands Nicole shares something she's always thought was important, but even more so now is creating an experience with your brand and thinking about how it makes your audience feel For Nicole, the biggest trend she thinks is coming and has already slowly started is creating a user experience that is interactive and engaging and says this can be done through mindful design, scrollytelling, using narrative visualization, animations, typography, illustrations, 3D, etc. Nicole gives examples of a few brands that are already creating a unique interactive experience for their audiences How Erika personally uses Instagram as a search engine when looking for people, as do many people and says Instagram will be doing more of that when moving forward, so it will become more like a mini Google within Instagram One thing Erika has seen changing on Instagram is there's no longer a need to have these super glossy photos like you used to need, and she says a lot of brands don't have highly produced photoshoots anymore A big challenge most people have is creating high-quality, well-designed content and being consistent with it, which is why it's important to produce different content for different platforms Nicole talks about native visuals like, text message reminders, alerts, the things you see pop up daily on your phone and says she doesn't think they'll be going away in the future because they feel very organic and relevant to people Erika talks about text accounts on Instagram where your content is just text images only and says you can be successful by doing typography, but you want to make sure that they are visually and beautifully aligned to catch attention If you're posting to feed on Instagram, Erika says people should immediately get that you're an expert at what you do and that you truly live your message and believe in it How vulnerability is important, but it shouldn't look like dumping everything out for your audience to see, it should look like taking scary actions and risks Erika says she struggles with posting “normal life things” because she is an idea machine she says and that excites her more than posting a family picture Erika explains how a viewpoint is different than an opinion because it comes from your areas of expertise and experiences and talks about how to share what you stand behind in a way that truly reflects your business Why everyone has to have a sales funnel, no matter what you're selling and how the customer experience needs to be seamless Based on Nicole's experiences, email is where most sales take place so there needs to be an intimacy of the inbox that you want to capture, that's why opt-ins that create value are still important Erika and Nicole talk about removing content clutter, which is throwaway content that doesn't reflect your level of expertise or add to the experience Nicole explains what bro marketing is and says it creates a false sense of urgency, it's overpromising and underdelivering, and can also be non-inclusive Connect with Erika on her website at dailywhip.com, or shoot her a DM on Instagram Suzzanne Gamboa is the Co-Founder & Creative Director at Siembra Studios, a studio for changemakers and social impact brands. She helps small business owners build sustainable brands focusing on leadership, community & planet preservation. Prior to becoming a business owner, Suzzanne worked in the government and nonprofit sector. She focused on environmental and sustainability education in communities ranging from the Texas-Mexico Border to Chengdu, China. Here's what we covered on the episode: Suzzanne's Start to Sustainability and Branding How Suzzanne and I met a few month ago inside a Marketing Crash led by Erika Lyremark and Nicole Edwards and how we had a conversation about sustainable design, which is why I asked Suzzanne to come on the show When Suzzanne was working for the office of sustainability in local government to fulfill an internship requirement for her graduate program in environmental management, she was tasked to create a flyer, which led to a team training on how to use Illustrator, typography and colors that were within the government organization Suzzanne was inspired by the way the community responded to good design and says it felt like a really powerful way to get a message across which left her wanting to pursue similar work Between the time that Suzzanne's internship ended and the time she decided to take the leap as an entrepreneur, she didn't find anything creatively fulfilling, but had graphic design as a skill and had connections in the wedding industry so she started as a wedding stationer How Suzzanne quickly realized being a wedding stationer wasn't the fulfilling career she wanted, and how she saw another designer teaching about branding, so she took her course which is how she landed on branding For Suzzanne's first clients, she did calligraphy on place cards for a friend's wedding, then she designed her sister-in-law's wedding invitations When Suzzanne started branding, her first client came from the wedding industry and after that she closed the stationery side of her business and continued with branding until she opened up her studio, Siembra Studios with her co-founder, who is a copywriter Siembra Studios + Where to Start With Sustainability Early into Suzzanne's branding career, she noticed a lot of clients wanting copy done in conjunction with the branding, so she and her now co-founder of Siembra Studios started a partnership which developed further into creating the studio Suzzanne explains how they have a 50/50 partnership and explains that her partner is involved in anything communications related and that on the other side she does the creative direction, strategy and design The story of how Suzzanne and her partner officially started their studio last year, right before the pandemic How Suzzanne and her partner also do work outside of the studio and what kind of clients come through the studio The different services Suzzanne offers through the studio and the process they go through with clients If you're a designer who wants to add sustainability to their brand cores but doesn't know where to get started, Suzzanne suggests a group called Climate Designers as a good resource One thing that is unique about Siembra Studios is that they integrate the planet piece into their work and Suzzanne explains how they do that, for example they'll look at how a product impacts the environment Suzzanne tell us that they try to offer better solutions to clients when it comes to environmental impact and says it's important to be transparent in the way that you're marketing your product Suzzanne explains that greenwashing is marketing something as sustainable when it's really not and she gives an example How Suzzanne never knew is was a possibility to mix her two skill sets, branding and knowledge about environmental sustainability but is so happy she gets to in her business and she explains where she got the idea to combine the two When it comes to what's next, Suzzanne says for her personal brand she will be focusing more on the strategy and implementation of things and says she also offers VIP design days which will also be part of her future more Suzzanne walks us through the process she goes through with clients and gives examples of how she thinks about environmental sustainability with different clients Discover more about Siembra Studios at www. siembra studios.eco, on Instagram or LinkedIn and connect with Suzzane at suzzane gamboa.com   Links mentioned: Siembra Studios Climate Designers  Siembra Studios on Instagram  Siembra Studios on LinkedIn Suzzanne's Website   Like what you heard? The Design Business Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 22, 2020 12:35

Well hello friends! It's been a minute since I've published a solo episode, and I wanted to pop in here to give you a couple behind-the-scenes updates today.  It's December 21, 2020, and this is a time of year where a lot of people take time off, reset, declutter, share gratitude and get ready for the new year.  2020 has been a year unlike any other we've experienced during this lifetime, but I'm grateful for so many things.  My oldest son graduated and has been promoted twice already, soon to be 3 times at his job.  My younger son just turned 14, is doing pretty well with virtual learning, and started working out to get in shape for football next year.  My little sister was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at this time last year, and she's expected to make a full recovery.  My dad hit a big set back in September with some chronic illnesses he has, and is doing 100x better.  We did some projects around our house that we never had time to do because we were always gone with our kids in sports - what seemed like 24 / 7. We got new hardwood floors in our bedrooms, built a new retaining wall around our pool (we had to for structural reasons) and I'm forever finding things to deep clean and declutter. My family would like me to go to work at an office so I stop giving them tasks. :) I wanted to share a couple wins in my business, and things I'll be doing differently in 2021 and beyond.  I shared this exercise last year on episode 66 and I wanted to publicly share what I found when I did this exercise yesterday.  The exercise is really easy. Here's what you do:  Write down all your wins. Acknowledge what didn't work. Declare what you're saying goodbye to. And announce to the world what your new normal is. I got the new normal idea from one of my mentors, Erika Lyremark, last year. Before COVID.  Here's a couple things from my list of wins:  My visibility has tripled this year, which resulted in so many great things! Like new followers on Instagram, new people on my email list, more podcast downloads, consistent invitations for me to be interviewed on other podcasts, guest training opportunities, project collaborations and more. I even got the opportunity to license Conversion Design School™. In 2021 I'm looking forward to even more opportunities for me to expand my reach, and plan to be super strategic about my visibility. I'll be re-viving my YouTube channel, being more strategic with this podcast, and I already have my launches planned for Q1. I know from experience that Launching as a digital marketing tool you can use to help you expand your imprint, visibility, audience, customer list, and bottom line. If you want to collaborate on a design project, interview me on your podcast, or want me to do a guest training for your audience, send an email to me at design @ melissaburkheimer.com. I've finally created a product suite that converts. After years of only designing sales pages and managing launches, I've created 4 new offers that can help me build momentum on a much larger level, and help me do something that should've crossed my mind years ago: build wealth. These programs are my new DIY offers that are there, and will be updated + marketed later in 2021. Not many people know about them because I didn't do any major launches or marketing for these programs in 2020. I had 2 launches planned for Conversion Design School™ in June and September of this year, but shelved those plans. The newest offer I'm working on that I'm super excited about it - because it's the Done-With-You offer that's been missing from my product suite. It's called Launch Celebrity, and it's a 6-month group mentorship program designed to help service providers, creatives, and consultants produce a blockbuster launch. It's so new that I don't even have a sales page for it yet. Applications are open, so if you want details, send me a DM on Instagram!  I hired someone to help me write my show notes for the podcast! This was a huge relief for me. There's a lot of talk in the online space about outsourcing + hiring, but not a lot of context for what to do. I spent the first year or so doing them by myself, and it took me what felt like forever. I was distracted, frustrated, and knew I needed to get it off my plate. When I first started the podcast, I'd take notes during the interview to help me get started, but then I didn't feel like I was being present, so I started doing it after the fact! Here's a couple things from my list of what didn't work. I planned to rely on launches for most of my income this year, said no to 1:1 projects and then didn't launch. So, I'm setting up 2021 to look much different, so I'm not solely reliant on launches for my business revenue. I still had income from teaching college classes, payment plans from previous launches, and design projects, so I was still able to keep my business running. I could've launched on a smaller scale if I had a team in place to handle things when I had to stop working. I plan to hire a part-time project manager early next year to help me manage my launches (I do most everything myself now besides sales page copy and website development). I'll spend the first half of the year creating updated assets for all the offers, and then I can spend the second half of the year tweaking and testing to increase sales.  What I'm Saying Goodbye to: 1. Working all the time. Quarantine had me at the laptop waaaay too much, especially the first half of this year. 2. Doing almost everything myself. Hello, new launch manager! I can't wait to meet you! I'm a much better delegator than doer, so I'm excited to see how this turns out! 3. All this extra weight I've been carrying for the past 5 years. Emotionally and physically. I want to be in the best shape + health of my life, so big changes are coming. My new normal: I want to help 100 service providers become Launch Celebrities. I make money in my business every day. My content creates change in the design industry. More and more creatives believe success is possible by watching my content. And they make it happen. I have small, but mighty team that supports me. My podcast creates opportunities for my business, my listeners, my guests, and more. It's easy for people to buy from me! I also wanted to share a few quick updates happening behind-the-scenes for the podcast: 1. We're updating our messaging, graphics, and mission within the next few months. 2. We're going to make it easy for you to request interviews from experts you look up to, and submit questions that get answered on the show. 3. I'm working on creating transcripts for every episode to make it more accessible. We have about 30 done, and 90ish left.  4. I'm going to get fancy and create a press kit, and create more sophisticated pitches to send to guests.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to be in your ears every week. I'm so thankful that you listen – and for the creatives who come on here and share their stories. Real life update from me. First, I wanna say thank you for continuing to listen to this podcast, showing up in my community, emailing me, and all the things. This whole "put yourself out there and help people thing" can be nerve-wracking, but I'm so grateful for your support! I also have received a ton of inquiries from designers who didn't know if Conversion Design School™ was for them, and who just wanted to work with me privately - so if you're interested, send me a DM on Instagram over @melissaburkheimer. Slowing Down + Integrating I've been promoting, creating content, delivering, updating, coaching, researching and doing all the things for this new program I created called Conversion Design School™. So pretty much a non-stop hustle mode since October of last year, and I'm taking this week and February to slow down, finish sales pages I'm working on, mentor the students in Conversion Design School™ and those in my VIP mastermind, teach a few college classes, update my website, and explore who my next hire should be. And yes, for me that is slowing down. :) I'm also going to the gym more, sleeping more, writing down my goals every day, meditating, slow walking with Andy, seeing my chiropractor, and making my mind and body a major priority this year. We received some sad news in my family, which prompted me to get my butt in gear. I'm not going to talk about it on the podcast I decided but if you're curious, send me a DM on Instagram and I'm happy to talk about it. And as Kate Northrup says, Body first, Business second. I've been connecting with designers all over the world these last few months on my Designer Business Classes, in my FB group, and via Instagram DM. Most of the classes I teach like that are live, so it's a joy to actually talk to designers live and hear their stories and help them get to the next level. One question that stood out to me in a conversation in my free community was about choosing a direction, and then feeling guilty for choosing one and not acknowledging the other things you want to do. How I created Conversion Design School™ (The Story + Timeline) I've also been getting a lot of questions about how I got the idea and then created Conversion Design School™, and I thought I'd share how it started, and how you can choose a new business direction and bring it to life. After 2 years of freelance designing for pretty much anyone locally who would pay me, I came across a webinar someone Tweeted that Amy Porterfield was hosting. I signed up. That next year (it was 2013) I bought from peeps like Melanie Duncan, Amy Porterfield, Marie Forleo, Erika Lyremark and Elizabeth DiAlto because I was totally fascinated with how they marketed themselves. Amy Porterfield's program was a FB Marketing Lab, and she liked my FB page. I thought I was sooooo cool, so I shared a photo of her liking my page on social media. A dude named Sean Malarkey liked that photo. I sent a FB friend request with no other intention. Fast forward about 6 months, he posted on FB that he needed a graphic designer. I raised my hand, and got 1 of 2 available gigs. That gig was a sales page for Amy Porterfield's FBInfluence. Sean was behind-the-scenes of people like Amy Porterfield, Lewis Howes and James Wedmore in launching their courses back in the early 2010's. Two months later, James Wedmore hired me to help him with sales pages when I raised my hand for a hot seat on one of the coaching calls in a monthly membership program he had. My problem for the hot seat: “I'm working with clients who pay me when they need work, but now I'm working on this sales page. Should I fire my other clients?" I was then referred to everyone in James's rolodex, and then he hired me to manage his launches. I didn't know project management was a skill (I thought everyone wanted to plan their life on Friday nights. It turns out they don't.) With no marketing and no sales page for my new sales page design service, I stayed busy doing sales pages. My clients loved me because my designs were beautiful but also focused on getting the conversion, fitting into the customer journey, because I did what I said I was going to. I made their life easy. Managing launches and creating sales pages came naturally to me, and I realized that thought leaders like James and Amy were hella focused on seeing success with their launches, not stressing about their brand design. Fast forward to 2019, I was running my own launches, mentoring designers, and had launched a podcast for designers. When I was interviewed on another podcast for designers in February 2019, it ended up being all about conversion design, and that's when I knew I had to create a program showing businesses how to build designs focuses on data, customer experience, the conversion and top-notch UX. People begged me for years to create a sales page course, but I refused because I knew I couldn't just teach about sales page design. Conversion Design School™ was created as a result of that podcast, my experience, people begging me for a course, and me interviewing Erika Lyremark on my podcast. Erika came on my podcast cause I was invited to pitch someone for a branding project who had been on The Oprah Show. I didn't get that gig. I finished Erika's program on September 13, 2019, launched Conversion Design School™ in October 2019, and the rest is history. Funny thing, while I was building/launching Conversion Design School™, Sean came back to me 6 years later and asked me to build him another sales page. Throughout this last year I've gotten really clear about what direction I want to take, and it's taken years of practice, yucky clients, amazing clients, projects that wow'ed, and commitment to get here. When you know which direction you want to take, it's easy to choose your next step. Pivot to January 2020. I was tagged in a post in a local FB group for marketers for a freelance design project. I was the first one tagged - and sent over a proposal, despite it being completely out of scope for what I WANT to do. And, in the inquiry process, the client (which is a credit union) mentioned several times they had a limited budget. (Eye roll.) I did not get the project. Just another sign that I'm going in the right direction, and the higher powers (whatever you believe) took care of it for me. Decide what you want. It will come your way. Here are 5 things you can do to jumpstart your design business and pick your new direction today. 1. Make a list of ALL the things you want to do. Everything. Just put it somewhere so it's written down and out of your brain. Circle the top 3-5 that seem doable or are in your heart. Then, narrow it down again. You may need to take a break during this process. And that's okay. Pick 1-2. 2. Declutter your life as much as possible. Clean up your computer files. Google Drive. Your closet. Your fridge. Your entry way. Your desk. Your car. Everything. You may be wondering why. Every mindset course I've ever taken (there are a lot) has you declutter as a first step for every level of clear growth. We're just creating space for new awesomeness in your life. 3. Create a plan to start this new thing. Give yourself plenty of time to get it done. It took me 9 or so months to actually birth Conversion Design School™, and I'll probably be working on selling it a lot this year. I like to give myself 90 days to complete a new goal. Break it down into 4 phases: 1. Offer creation 2. Offer testing 3. Offer delivery/feedback 4. Offer update Decide if you need to hire someone to help you. I took Erika Lyremark's TripleXpert program in late fall of 2019, and I'm in it again to create a new offer. I have a lot of students in Conversion Design School™ not sure how to choose a direction, so I added a bonus call with me today to help them choose. If you want extra support from me, send me a DM and we can talk about a few opportunities available for us to work together. 4. Take some time to debrief or as my friend Sage Polaris says, integrate. This week I'm measuring my results from my last Conversion Design School™ promo to see the best strategy for launching it again. One thing I know for sure is that it's going to be huge, but I want my next promo to be more spacious. And again, if you wanted to explore working with me privately this year, and if you're interested, send me a DM on Instagram over @melissaburkheimer. And if you wanna be brave, send me a DM on Instagram over at Melissa Burkheimer and tell me what you learned from this episode or even just what your new direction is! I'm rooting for you!

There are a bazillion ways you could do a year in review, but I have a really simple one for you. I'm in major hustle mode right now (more on that later) at a time when most people slow down, but I'm starting to get my mojo back (more on that later), and I did this exercise with the ladies in my designer mastermind, and it was really refreshing. A lot of times they roll their eyes at me when I surprise them with fun activities like this, but it really is for their own good, and every single one of them did it. So, it's really easy.  Write down all your wins.  Acknowledge what didn't work.  Declare what you're saying goodbye to.  And announce to the world what your new normal is.  I got the new normal idea from my mentor, Erika Lyremark, and when I declared mine, I won a free 1:1 session with her in a contest. I knew it was going to be mine. I write it down every day. That's it. It's the holiday season at the time this episode is getting published, so I wanted to keep today's episode short and sweet. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be in your ears every week. I'm so thankful that you listen - and for the designers who come on here and share their stories. I'm grateful for the award we won, and I even submitted business for another award. I have no idea if I'll win, but it's going to be a part of my new normal.  And if you wanna be brave, send me a DM on Instagram over at Melissa Burkheimer and tell me what you learned from this exercise or even just what your new normal is. So Kira and Rob asked her about: •  how she became the “business whipstress” •  her red carpet dream and how to find yours •  how to get clarity around “your thing” in your space •  the importance of clearing clutter (real and imaginary) •  the types of clients she works with and the problems she helps them solve •  the three things to focus on when developing products •  Erika’s creation process and how she goes from idea to glamorous products •  why it’s important to get outside of your bubble when creating your brand •  the biggest takeaways from each step of her career path •  how discipline and structure contribute to her success •  why she doesn’t call herself a copywriter even though she writes a lot of copy •  two things you need to do to establish your authority •  how to get better at selling (and why you should) •  boundaries and how to get comfortable with them Sounds pretty good, right? You have been a mentor to me for years before I even started my copywriting business so I feel like this is just such a great place to be with you right now. Erika: Well I am very thrilled to be here as well. Kira:   All right. Let's start with your story. How did you end up as a business whipstress? Erika: I don't think that was on my list of occupations when I was a young lady. I wanted to be a race car driver, I wanted to be a doctor, I wanted to be a fashion designer, but I always knew that I wanted to be in charge. Like no matter what I was doing, it's like if I'm not in charge, I actually don't do well. I'm a terrible employee, but if I know that I'm in charge, I actually excel at that. So, I mean, long story short, I'm super nerdy, I love learning. I'm hardcore Type A, I'm super driven. I've always been really really motivated in my life. I'm also highly creative. I've always been really creative. I'm very much left brain, right brain split, so there's one side or the other. It's constantly arguing with the other side. Erika documented her controversial life experiences in her wildly successful book "Think Like a Stripper: Business Lessons to Up Your Confidence, Attract More Clients & Rule Your Market.” The book was lauded by Dan Pink who called it, "A smart and provocative read.” It also received Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran’s stamp of approval for Erika’s “wit, humor, and no-nonsense advice.” With several possible ventures to be found in her business incubator, Erika is now entering a new phase of her life which is concerned less with glitz and glamor and more with cultivating community and connection, feeling fully expressed in her business, and serving the planet.

Go listen! QUOTES BY TENA "In 2009, no joke, I'm sitting in the car with my hubby. And I thought 'I don't want to sit in a cubicle anymore.' He actually said to me "you are way too talented to be sitting in a cubicle" and it just like a huge light bulb went off. I always wanted to do the entrepreneurial thing. And I just never really knew what it looked like." Tena Pettis "When I started thinking of Tena.cious and that light bulb went off. I thought, 'you know what? I don't want to be like every other design firm or web firm or when they combine and do design and web. I thought what is like that third thing I can do. And again, light bulb, it was like, I can manage Facebook Business Pages for people." Tena Pettis "One of the things that really changed me was in January in 2013 is when I first did my first coaching program. And it was a group coaching program that I did with Erika Lyremark. And she, back then, had a business called The Morning Whip or the Daily Whip actually, and one of her courses was called The Morning Whip. She was an ex-stripper, she's doing amazing things still to this day. But she's kind of like similar in what she teaches to like the Marie Forleo B-School, but very different and much more hands on. You got to talk to Erika all of the time. So, I started working with her. And I remember at the time, in December of 2012, we had about $10,000 in sales a month. So, you know I had staff. I had overhead. I had all of these different things. And $10,000 is really not a lot. I hired and did that group coaching program and by February, actually, we had more than doubled our sales. So, that February was $22,000 in sales for that month. I was a true believer of the coaching program, let me tell you. And it just changed my whole mindset." Tena Pettis "One thing that does come easy to me is ideas. I'm never out of new ideas...what's been hard is knowing when to take that next step. Knowing when to hire that person. Or when to take that next step. Risk." Tena Pettis "I love to talk to people who have been there and done that." Tena Pettis "I think Masterminds are best when people aren't working together." Tena Pettis "I want to keep making the stuff we have, that much better." Tena Pettis "I think most people and women especially are taking on too much at a time. And we want to do every social media platform and have our blog look perfect and our video look perfect and do Periscope and Blab and Meerkat. And blah blah blah blah blah. And the thing is, no one is benefiting from that. So, I say narrow things down. Declutter as much as you possibly can." Ever noticed how other people are running their businesses and wonder - how can I take a note from them and improve my business too? Now I don't mean you look at them and wonder - how I can BE like them. Or - why am I not as good as them? Or why can't MYYY business be THAT successful? No, not envy. I mean - really looking at the things they do every single day, every week, over and over again...and thinking hmmm maybe if I did those things I could improve my business too? Over the last few weeks I've shared some business owners who taught me something about the way I want to run my own life (and business). We looked at Amy Porterfield who shows by example how to be practical, take action, and keep things very simple and straightforward. We featured Corbett Barr who believes in being useful and running a business with integrity at all times. Then - last week we listened to Erika Lyremark who showed me the power of confidence and self-acceptance. This week - we've got one more interview to point you to and that person has a little of all the first three in her. She's been on the show before, but this interview was recorded back when she was taking the leap into the unknown and changing her business. She leads by example always saying you can have the business you want - you get to choose. It's your business, right? I'm talking about Laura Roeder. Check this final #TBT interview out where Laura talks about changing her business model when she first created a program back in July 2012. Is there something in your business you want to change, but aren't really sure if you should? Listen to Laura and how she made her decision to change her own business. In fact, check the show notes below and check out our interview from July 2014 where she talks about yet another venture she's jumped into and succeeded.  Get To Know Laura LKR Social Media blog LKR's on Twitter LKR Social Mediai on Facebook Show Notes Meet Edgar (Laura's latest big business addition)

Leave me feedback! eyogaclass@gmail.com or leave me a message on SpeakPipe Come see me at the New Media Expo in January!  Tenacious Gratitude Thoughts? I can tell you mine. Tenacious didn’t quite feel “right” with me. I felt that being tenacious was not something I aspired to be. It’s too rough. Too hard. Too pushy. Too manly. I imagined the quintessential football player, the one that just stampedes over the competition regardless of anything else, bulldozing through pain, through obstacles, through physical harm - Raaaaaaaaaaah!!!! I’m not that. In fact, it kinda repulsed me. I didn’t want to be known as tenacious. And then I was introduced to Adeline Arjad from Chocbite by my awesome-sauce business powerhouse Erika Lyremark. Arlene said: “Tenaciousness + Gratitude = Success” And then it made sense. This larger than life word that I had chosen not to align with at all, became more than my subjective cultural upbringing and life experience. I let the word be. Tenacious: not easily stopped or pulled apart. Firm. Strong. Seeking something valued or desired. Continuing for a LONG time. Synonyms - devoted, faithful, relentless. I recognized that I pushed away tenaciousness because I was afraid to commit and follow through. Tenacious requires a deep, unwavering commitment to the things that you value and dream and I wasn’t willing to go that far. I wanted an out. I wanted excuses. I didn’t want to do the work, not fully. What if it didn’t work out? What if what I stood behind or for changed? What if I had to defend publicly what I stood for? What if… …..I failed? I’m ready - NOW - because of the magic of gratitude. You simply cannot be tenacioustenacioustenacious. It’s unsustainable. With gratitude thrown in the mix you’ve got a recipe for unwavering magic making. Gratitude refuels and replenishes. OMG this was perhaps the biggest lesson that I’ve learned. Gratitude is like doing a personal and spiritual detox. It’s like drinking and eating your greens. It’s the fastest way to clear out the cruft left by the fire of tenacity. I’m ready to embody tenacity. I’m ready to fuel it with the nectar of gratitude. Do you want to join me? How about practicing along and letting me know how tenacity mixed with gratitude felt in your body? Yeay or nay? COME BACK FOR THE IMAGES AND POSSIBLE VIDEOS TO HELP YOU WITH THE SEQUENCE!
