One of the things business owners tell me on repeat is that an increasingly competitive and noisy online space means a lack of quality, consistent leads coming into their world.  And, as we head into peak launch season, one of the most important things you need to focus on in your launch prep is not only attracting those leads, but also nurturing them so that when it comes time to launch, they're ready to buy.But let's be sirius: this is actually something you need to focus on all year round, not just at launch time. Because here's the thing – just because someone comes into your world today, doesn't mean they'll immediately buy from you. Everyone follows their own unique customer journey, so it's up to you to have different pathways open and available for them to discover you, connect with you, trust you, and then buy from you. So how do you attract leads who are as hot as Harry Styles and ready to buy?Well, in today's episode of the How I Do Content Podcast, I'm going to share how you can get more leads into your business. Interview by Kris PetersAfter starting her career back in 1996, multilingual singer-songwriter Nur NH quickly set her sights on a global audience, signing with US label World Media Alliance in 2011 and enjoying success with her EP Real Story. She found herself on the cusp of something special, but then suddenly vanished from music in 2013, not re-emerging for a decade. In a tale too unnerving to be told by anyone but herself, Nur NH found herself in an abusive relationship which shattered her dreams and nearly cost her her life. From that period of desolation, Nur NH has somehow managed to regain her drive and focus, with the first step on her path of healing coming in the form of her comeback EP Unbroken, which will be released on November 11.To help celebrate her first steps back into music and life in general, the singer has released the lead single from Unbroken, a mesmerising tale of survival called I'm Done With You.HEAVY sat down with Nur NH earlier this week to discuss her new music."I started my career in 1996 as a singer," she explained, "and then I played with a rock band in 2007 and then released my first EP Real Story in 2011 through US label World Media Alliance. Then I stopped my career in 2013 with my personal reasons, and then I just came back to playing music again in 2022 and now here I am."We ask how it feels to be back making music again and how the first single has been received."It's really good," she smiled. "It's a really special song for me and means a lot for me because I'm Done With You is the first song that I wrote after 10 years of stop playing music. I'm really happy. I'm happy because I came back again to play music after 10 years."In the full interview, Nur NH discusses I'm Done With You musically, runs us through the music video which was filmed in Borneo and why, the cleansing nature of music, regaining her feet in the scene, talks us through each of the four tracks on Unbroken and the meaning behind them, upcoming shows and more.

How confident are you at selling? If you're like most coaches and online professionals I speak to, sales is the area of business that feels the most uncomfortable, and for good reason! It's usually where those fears around rejection or money come up, when you start to question your worth and critique your pricing, where you feel like you've got to get a YES otherwise it means your business is doomed forevermore.... Maybe that's a little over dramatic, but if we're being honest, there's a lot to unpack when it comes to how we think about sales - which is causing this whole lack of confidence. Typically, women have an aversion to sales because we think it means becoming something that's out of integrity with our sense of decency. Maybe that to be good at sales you have to run extreme ad campaigns and have shouty countdown timers, or send millions of pushy cold DMs.... Well, in this episode you'll be glad to hear a TOTALLY different view on how to approach sales, so that you have supreme confidence, you're in integrity with yourself, and - importantly- you get an easy YES, with no coercion in sight! Our guest today is the fabulous Dorothy Villeneuve - 22 year sales veteran, sales coach to +6-figure entrepreneurs and host of Wildly Confident Sales Podcast. She shares with us: Why your 'Zone of Brilliance' creates more confidence How to say your price without pressure Why it's more effective to choose the sales process that aligns with your own preferences 3 top ways to be more confident in your next sales call About Our Guest Dorothy is dedicated to helping women achieve unshakeable confidence in their sales so that they can attract ideal clients to their high-ticket offers. Here are some highlights: Good work takes time and through time, you get better at it. If you're looking to build a business, the most important thing is solving important problems for customers. If it doesn't solve their problems, then it doesn't matter. For a startup, everything takes longer to grow. Don't be impatient. There is so much to learn and so much to improve overtime. Start and continue working on. Podcast is a way of going deep with someone. It's another way to connect with an audience in times where you might not be able to reach them otherwise. Just like with every other type of media, podcasts are no different. We have to work to make sure that people are aware of what we're doing and that's the exciting creative journey to it. It's not about how many impressions you're getting, it's about engagement. It's about who you're reaching and how much time they're spending with you. That's going to drive impact versus just pageviews.   In celebration of Screw It Just Do It's 5th Birthday Anniversary, Alex will be launching the Podcast Launch Challenge. Having the dreamIt's great to have a dream. Right? I think we all have some sort of dream that we'd like to accomplish someday. And having that dream of a better life is always a good thing. Because not everyone can have those positive thoughts and ambitions. Not everyone even knows how to dream big…or even dream at all about a better life.I know I wasn't brought up to think that way. It never even came up. I'm certain of it. My dad didn't graduate high school and my mom never went to college, but somehow, I really don't know how, she learned how to take shorthand and become a secretary at the Towns City Hall. But for some, dreaming can come harder than others. For some, it can be something that maybe exists in the back of their head, but if it seeps up toward the surface, it can quickly get squashed down to where it came from…the depths of the inner conscience. And that's really a shame, isn't it? Because I think we're made to have those dreams of a better life someday. That's how the US was founded, on a dream of a better life. Better than being oppressed. And so…when we're working that job…that J.O.B. where we grind out every day, just waiting for the weekend to come…when we're hoping for a better job, or a better life, and maybe, just maybe, someday, I could have my own business…doing…whatever. It doesn't matter sometimes, does it?You keep seeing others with their businesses and how they, somehow, made it work, and you think to yourself, ‘could that EVER be me?' And you're thinking ‘I see this guy on LinkedIn or on some Internet ad and he's talking about how much he makes and that I could make that too.' Getting the courage to actAnd then…it happens. Something finally clicks or snaps in your head and you just can't take it any longer. You have to have a way out of whatever situation you're in. You can't go on like this. You have to change something because if you don't then everything stays the same. And that's just not acceptable anymore. And it isn't about the money for some people. It's beyond that. I know for me, when I quit my job, back in 2001, it wasn't about the money, it was about my personal happiness. It was about the situation I was in and how terrible it was.And that's what you're looking for as well. Your personal well being. Your sanity. So…you get the courage to act. You get a book, or you sign up for a course, you may even start talking to someone about what to do next. But you take the first step. And then, after some time goes by, maybe a few weeks or a few months…you take another step toward the dream. You start to shape the dream and feed the dream. The dream shifts from being a dream to something that you really believe is now possible someday. So, you create some time by giving up some things..whether it's TV or some other time consuming thing that you were into (for me it was the long bike rides). But now, with this extra time, you're starting to put some pieces together in this big puzzle called self employment.Making the leapAnd then…there comes the day, when you're convinced it's time to go in a different direction. You've got the confidence now and you believe in yourself now and you've had enough of the old and you're all on board with bringing in the new life you've always wanted. So…you quit. What do I do now?And for awhile, you're riding on adrenaline and the excitement of new beginnings and things are great. For awhile. And don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of things being great. I'm not even hinting that I don't want people to have a great new path. But I've been doing this for awhile now, myself and I have some inside information here about being self employed. I've also talked to a lot of people along the way that are in the same realm as I am and believe me, usually the same thought hits them all at some point or another. They've make the commitment to have their own business and then it hits them. ‘What do I do now?'And for some, they may have a business plan or they don't, that part really doesn't matter. It hits them all the same. Because the business plan…even though it's supposed to lay out The Plan, it still focuses more on strategy than the actual tactics you'll be using to fulfill the strategy.  So when it finally comes time to fill the day with the most meaningful tasks…like, oh I don't know..selling something, there can be a lot of distractions along the way.Now that you don't have the commitment of having to go to work every day and be totally accountable for your time, now that you don't have a boss, and you're your own boss, you keep finding that the days can just fly away one after another and that being self employed isn't really what you thought it was going to be.Too much free timeWhy? Because in the structure of a job, you have to do certain things at certain times and there's no other option. It's just the way it is. You may have had a schedule or something else that planned and controlled your time. But you didn't have a choice. But now…things are different. Now you not only have a choice, you have 1000 choices every day. YOU now decide how you're going to spend your time and what you want to do.And that's a problem. You see, if you're working from home already, then you know first hand what I'm about to say.But once you're in that self employment role, and you don't have the discipline or focus, your days…even weeks can fly by without really accomplishing much. Certainly no sales happened. And this is what I see happening over and over again. The fridge is too closeThings that aren't normally distractions are now distractions. And I'm not talking about just cell phones, even though that's got to be the number one distraction. There are some others as well.No matter how far away it is, even if it's on a different floor that where you're deciding to work from, some things are just too close for you to remain focused in your business.Take that refrigerator. How many times do you find yourself just looking inside…for…who knows what? And then…there's the TV. The one thing you gave up to get yourself more time to learn about having a business…and now it's back in focus for all those shows you want to catch up on, now that you're not working a job. Or maybe it's not the fridge or the TV, but that you just get caught up in being busy? And that's easy to do, right? Because there's a lot of things we can fill our day with that keeps us feeling and looking like we're building a business. But if you're just busy being busy, and you're not closing sales, then there will come a time when you're just going to have to pay those bills that keep rolling in and you may find yourself wondering if you need to go back to that J.O.B. scenario again. How do I focus? So how do you deal with all this freedom that you're now bestowed with? How do you find the self discipline you'll need in order to focus and actually build a business? It's easy to make a to do list every day. It's easy to put a plan in place and have a strategy. But what about the focus to do all that? And what do you focus on anyway? Sales? Marketing? Networking? Social media? These are just a few of the mountain of topics that you can focus on.What works for me? Having hard deadlines to get things done by a certain day. I pick a day for podcasting, writing, finances, social media. These days have a hard deadline. I must get these things done before a certain day, not ON that day.Getting helpNow, I've said many times that you're not alone on this journey, and I'll say it again. You're not alone. You can get help. Whether you get an intern or a VA or a coach, or even hire someone to be part of your staff. You don't have to do everything yourself.I offer my online tech services to other small business owners and non profit organizations to be an ‘on call advisor and tech guru' when they have a need. It's harder for me to plan the finances that way, but another service that I offer is to be on a stipend each month (typically $500 a month) to do specific tasks:·      Email marketing·      Copywriting·      Website updates·      Website security·      Podcast productionSo you see, you don't have to do everything yourself. You can get others to help you do the things you either don't like to do or don't want to do.If you feel overwhelmed, you don't have to.I like to put it this way.If you want to take a trip…go on a journey…to…let's just say the west coast of the United States (I live on the east coast). You can get there a number of ways. You can take the low budget way and:·      walk·      ride a bikeYou can pay a little bit more and:·      drive·      take a trainOr you can get there the fastest by getting on a plane and arriving the same day. You're paying more, but you're getting there faster and now, you can jump to the next goal of the journey because you've got that first one out of the way. This is why I offer the ‘Done With You' and the ‘Done For You' option for launching your new Podcast. They have different price points, but they both get you to your destination faster than the walking pace. And that's why options like these work. If you want to move at the walking pace, I have the DIY ‘Starting a Podcast' E-book mini course I created for you. Over 50 pages that cover all the basics you'll need to know to get started. But…you're at the walking pace. So, when you're finding that reality is setting in and having a business wasn't what you thought it was going to be, just keep in mind that you can outsource some tasks to take the most burdensome things off your shoulders. Then, you can focus on just a few tasks that only you should do. In episode 6 of the Podcast, I talked a bit about staying in your ‘zone of genius'. Check out that episode to hear more about what you should focus on and not focus on.But be encouraged friends. As time goes on in your new small business journey, you'll improve many skills. And one of them will be how to focus. It will get better. Your small business survival depends on it. Do you want to start your own Podcast? Cori Zeuli is the Chief Implementation Officer and Chief Kajabi Strategist at Your Core Solutions, which is a powerhouse team of virtual experts that focuses on helping their clients share their expertise online. They use strategic consulting, tech, empowerment, coaching, and implementation to guide their clients through some of their toughest challenges. Kathy and Cori have been working together for six years. How did Cori begin her journey with Kajabi? Find out more in this week's episode!   Key takeaways: Cori talks about how she became a virtual expert and owning her business. Cori comes from a background in corporate finance, but she always felt underappreciated. At the time she was leaving her job, one of her colleagues introduced her to Kathy and what it was like being a virtual assistant. It took Cori three years to say yes to Kathy's suggestion about Kajabi. Cori shares what finally made her say “yes”! Back in 2015, Kajabi took notice of how Cori was getting so good at what she did, how she was sharing her knowledge and helping others, that they offered her to be a Kajabi ambassador. Kathy highly recommends Kajabi and talks about the history of the company and its credibility. How does Cori stay on top of Kajabi's fast-paced improvements? Cori shares the three ways she works with her clients: Done For You, Done With You, and DIYers. From strategic blueprints that are customized for specific needs, to graphic designers and copywriters, she and her team offer a complete package! Why is it important to know Kajabi to run a business with it? Kajabi experts vs. marketing experts. What's the difference and how does that impact your business? Kathy summarizes Cori's six-year journey. It's been quite an exciting ride!   Resources: Yourcoresolutions.com Cori on LinkedIn Cori on Facebook Cori on Twitter   Quotes:   “There is no one-size-fits-all. Everybody's journey and vision are different.”   “This person might be amazing at Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, or Youtube or something like that, yes they can be beneficial to your team. However, if they don't know how things work inside of Kajabi, they're not going to be able to effectively create the marketing funnel that you want.”   “I see now that I am strong, driven, and caring and I want to see you succeed. And in the process, I'll succeed too. That's what's important.”

Do you ever feel that there is a Word from God, from His Scripture, that isn't quite DONE WITH YOU?  That is just what He does sometimes.Jesus tells Satan, because he obviously forgot, that there is more to life than bread.  The essential elements includes His Word if one wants to live an abundant, supplied life.  Be With Me is just that, an effort daily to place ourselves by a discipline in the path of a discovery.  Every word is worth considering.  I wonder how much I miss.  Yikes. This whole section of Scripture is an advertisement for the Old Testament.  It is all that Jesus has access to at the time.  The Old Testament was good enough for Jesus for all aspects of faith and practice...so...it probably should be good enough for me."Be gone" Satan works best by decreasing the distance between God an me, probably by His Word, His ESSENTIAL Word.  Subscribe on Apple Podcasts.

Well hello friends! It's been a minute since I've published a solo episode, and I wanted to pop in here to give you a couple behind-the-scenes updates today.  It's December 21, 2020, and this is a time of year where a lot of people take time off, reset, declutter, share gratitude and get ready for the new year.  2020 has been a year unlike any other we've experienced during this lifetime, but I'm grateful for so many things.  My oldest son graduated and has been promoted twice already, soon to be 3 times at his job.  My younger son just turned 14, is doing pretty well with virtual learning, and started working out to get in shape for football next year.  My little sister was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at this time last year, and she's expected to make a full recovery.  My dad hit a big set back in September with some chronic illnesses he has, and is doing 100x better.  We did some projects around our house that we never had time to do because we were always gone with our kids in sports - what seemed like 24 / 7. We got new hardwood floors in our bedrooms, built a new retaining wall around our pool (we had to for structural reasons) and I'm forever finding things to deep clean and declutter. My family would like me to go to work at an office so I stop giving them tasks. :) I wanted to share a couple wins in my business, and things I'll be doing differently in 2021 and beyond.  I shared this exercise last year on episode 66 and I wanted to publicly share what I found when I did this exercise yesterday.  The exercise is really easy. Here's what you do:  Write down all your wins. Acknowledge what didn't work. Declare what you're saying goodbye to. And announce to the world what your new normal is. I got the new normal idea from one of my mentors, Erika Lyremark, last year. Before COVID.  Here's a couple things from my list of wins:  My visibility has tripled this year, which resulted in so many great things! Like new followers on Instagram, new people on my email list, more podcast downloads, consistent invitations for me to be interviewed on other podcasts, guest training opportunities, project collaborations and more. I even got the opportunity to license Conversion Design School™. In 2021 I'm looking forward to even more opportunities for me to expand my reach, and plan to be super strategic about my visibility. I'll be re-viving my YouTube channel, being more strategic with this podcast, and I already have my launches planned for Q1. I know from experience that Launching as a digital marketing tool you can use to help you expand your imprint, visibility, audience, customer list, and bottom line. If you want to collaborate on a design project, interview me on your podcast, or want me to do a guest training for your audience, send an email to me at design @ melissaburkheimer.com. I've finally created a product suite that converts. After years of only designing sales pages and managing launches, I've created 4 new offers that can help me build momentum on a much larger level, and help me do something that should've crossed my mind years ago: build wealth. These programs are my new DIY offers that are there, and will be updated + marketed later in 2021. Not many people know about them because I didn't do any major launches or marketing for these programs in 2020. I had 2 launches planned for Conversion Design School™ in June and September of this year, but shelved those plans. The newest offer I'm working on that I'm super excited about it - because it's the Done-With-You offer that's been missing from my product suite. It's called Launch Celebrity, and it's a 6-month group mentorship program designed to help service providers, creatives, and consultants produce a blockbuster launch. It's so new that I don't even have a sales page for it yet. Applications are open, so if you want details, send me a DM on Instagram!  I hired someone to help me write my show notes for the podcast! This was a huge relief for me. There's a lot of talk in the online space about outsourcing + hiring, but not a lot of context for what to do. I spent the first year or so doing them by myself, and it took me what felt like forever. I was distracted, frustrated, and knew I needed to get it off my plate. When I first started the podcast, I'd take notes during the interview to help me get started, but then I didn't feel like I was being present, so I started doing it after the fact! Here's a couple things from my list of what didn't work. I planned to rely on launches for most of my income this year, said no to 1:1 projects and then didn't launch. So, I'm setting up 2021 to look much different, so I'm not solely reliant on launches for my business revenue. I still had income from teaching college classes, payment plans from previous launches, and design projects, so I was still able to keep my business running. I could've launched on a smaller scale if I had a team in place to handle things when I had to stop working. I plan to hire a part-time project manager early next year to help me manage my launches (I do most everything myself now besides sales page copy and website development). I'll spend the first half of the year creating updated assets for all the offers, and then I can spend the second half of the year tweaking and testing to increase sales.  What I'm Saying Goodbye to: 1. Working all the time. Quarantine had me at the laptop waaaay too much, especially the first half of this year. 2. Doing almost everything myself. Hello, new launch manager! I can't wait to meet you! I'm a much better delegator than doer, so I'm excited to see how this turns out! 3. All this extra weight I've been carrying for the past 5 years. Emotionally and physically. I want to be in the best shape + health of my life, so big changes are coming. My new normal: I want to help 100 service providers become Launch Celebrities. I make money in my business every day. My content creates change in the design industry. More and more creatives believe success is possible by watching my content. And they make it happen. I have small, but mighty team that supports me. My podcast creates opportunities for my business, my listeners, my guests, and more. It's easy for people to buy from me! I also wanted to share a few quick updates happening behind-the-scenes for the podcast: 1. We're updating our messaging, graphics, and mission within the next few months. 2. We're going to make it easy for you to request interviews from experts you look up to, and submit questions that get answered on the show. 3. I'm working on creating transcripts for every episode to make it more accessible. We have about 30 done, and 90ish left.  4. I'm going to get fancy and create a press kit, and create more sophisticated pitches to send to guests.  I'm grateful for the opportunity to be in your ears every week. I'm so thankful that you listen – and for the creatives who come on here and share their stories. And if you wanna be brave, send me a DM on Instagram and tell me what you learned from this exercise or even just what your new normal is. I'll be hosting some free, live masterclasses and fun experiences in January all about sales pages and launching. If you want to be the first to know when those happen, make sure you're on my email list. You can hop over to https://melissaburkheimer.com and scroll to the bottom of the page to get on it. Hiring is an entire project within itself… it has to have a plan, a goal, and excellent delivery. So once you’ve found the perfect fit... what happens next? Onboarding is challenging, and for that reason it often gets overlooked. Even if this is your first hire, you do not want to skip this part.  I’m here to talk you through the onboarding process, and give you a rundown of what a new employees’ first week should look like. By following these processes, you’ll help your new hire to hit the ground running.  If you’re short on time (or patience) and don’t want to deal with the hassle of hiring, let me do the dirty work for you! Fill out this form and let me worry about finding that perfect person for your team.  I also offer a Done With You option, through my Hiring Simplified course, which will make your search much simpler by giving you a streamlined project plan. Why Onboarding is Important Retention When you plan the onboarding process you will decrease your turnover, which is one of the highest operational costs of being a business owner. Give the new hire a wonderful experience, and make them feel nurtured as they enter your business. This will increase retention because they feel cared for immediately.   Building Solid Relationships When there is a plan, there will be a deeper connection with your new hire. As small business owners, there is a close overlap between family and your contractors- you rely on these people so your relationships with them matter. Don’t let onboarding feel too transactional; make it personal. Quicker ROI  When you onboard a new hire, you define what their job will look like, give them tools, ideas, opportunities, and education as they enter your business. They will be able to in their role much more quickly, therefore saving you money in the long run. Plan Your Onboarding Processes NOW Prepare for a Hiring Season Do you have a nondisclosure agreement or a contract that you use? Create them all ahead of time so you aren’t scrambling. Whether you talk to an attorney or draft these yourself, you need to protect and define what is expected of the role.   Articulate Your Mission Vision and Values  Onboarding is the perfect time to deeply define the goals for the role. Map out expected outcomes, and define what they need to do to be successful. Make sure you outline milestones for 30, 60, and 90 days.   Outline Your Systems and Processes Impress your new hire by having an itinerary with all necessary information available for them ahead of time. “Often, new hires feel like a nuisance because they don’t know what to do…  change that from the very beginning”   Provide access to tools though a system like Lastpass  Draft an annual calendar and show them everything on the docket for the year Create or review systems and standard operating procedures Draft an introduction email to your team  Create a prioritized task list that will provide direction and ownership Craft a simple organizational chart that documents each person's role so new hires know who to go to with questions  Outline a system for communication (weekly meeting, one-on-one check-ins, etc.) Put all necessary documents in a shared folder “The worst thing you can do is to not prioritize onboarding for your new hire” Welcoming Your New Hire Consider giving a gift to your new hire to show them that you are excited to have them on your team.    The First 5 Days Day 1 The first day is all about the culture; you need to verbally articulate what your business is about. What is your why? What motivates you? How did you start your business and what is your big vision?  Transition into how the new hire fits into the role, as well as expectations.  “People want to know what to do and what is expected of them” You’ll also want to talk about key results areas (KRA’s). A KRA is a statement of what you expect in 30-60-90 days. You are telling them how to be successful in the business. Outlining KRAs will provide clarity, and guide your weekly conversations. You will be able to gauge if they are capable of the expectations, and course correct if needed.    Day 2 Day two is about building rapport and demonstrating best practices. How will they be a successful part of your business? How will they fit into your vision? Show them the organizational chart and help them understand where they fit in.  You also want to spend some time getting to know them personally. You may want to ask them to take a personality assessment and go over the results. Understand what their motivations and their “why.” Demonstrate best practices: Introduce them to the team. This is their “official unveiling.” Explain how they fit in, and show how they will be valuable to the team Gather important information about them via an intake form (i.e. address, birthday, assessment types, etc.)  Go over your policies, procedures, and boundaries  Share your brand guidelines Review your annual calendar to go over the vision and plan for the next 6-12 months  Day 3 This is the first day you will give them access to the tools you use in your business. Now, it’s time to get to work, and you will begin the process handoffs. You as the leader don’t necessarily have to be involved in the training, but you will cast the vision so they can see how this particular process fits into your business. This is also a day to do specific tool training, so that they can start adding value quickly.   Day 4 Continue the process handoff. The goal is that by the next Monday they will be 50% profitable, meaning that they will know their responsibilities and will be 50% capable to perform the role you hired them for.   Day 5 Create time for the new hire to meet with your team, and set the schedule for your weekly or monthly calls.   You also need to ask for their feedback of your onboarding process.  Make sure to listen to their suggestions and take action. Show them that you value their feedback.  Lastly, you will set expectations for the following week. Look at the 30-day KRA, and break it down into what they can do in one week to feel successful.  “We want them to have quick wins because we want them to feel connected and valued’ Weekly Ops Activity I want you to take action! Look at your systems and create a tool assessment that lists all of the tools you use in your business and indicates who needs access to them.  Make sure to post it in The Ops Insiders Facebook Group.  Previous Episodes Mentioned Episode 4: The Core of Business: Your Mission, Vision and Values Stay Connected: Subscribe on your favorite podcast app.  Join the Ops Insiders Facebook Community: [convertkit form=5271754]   Other Ways to Connect with Me: Website Private Facebook Community Facebook Page Instagram This episode was first published at theopsauthority.com/podcast/32.

So many of us take pride in offering high-touch, customized service experiences for our clients, where everything is tailored to each client’s specific needs—so why is this week’s guest finding so much success doing the opposite with his product? Matt Johnson, of Pursuing Results, is a former WordPress developer who pivoted his business into a podcast production company, and he offers his production services as a full-package, standardized product. He sat down to talk with us about what that means, why it works, how other professionals can implement and scale the product model in their own businesses, and where the future of podcasting is headed. The Beginning Matt got his start in WordPress development building a website for a piano studio, and then later built another for his first consulting client, which led him into the world of real estate. From there, he learned the benefits of optimizing teams and processes well enough to able to step back from the day-to-day. It was also where he first learned about turning something well-known as a service offering, like real estate sales, into a packaged product. The company made real estate transactions into a neat little product that anybody could sell. He got into podcasting from there, starting out doing webinars for the real estate company—then a coworker pitched him on doing an actual podcast. It was B2B, and they built a lot of strong industry relationships that way—but not much of a business model. “Initially we had no idea how to monetize it, which we would not recommend, by the way, but that's what we did and it all worked out in the end. But it did take us a longer path to figure out how to monetize. I jumped in without a plan.” They knew they wanted to be successful influencers, and that his partner wanted to work his way into coaching, so things snowballed from there—and Matt got very good at running podcasts. Monetizing Matt and his partner started monetizing by selling online courses and live events, which worked for awhile but burnt them out pretty quickly. His partner moved into a virtual real estate firm, where agents could actually switch their real estate licences over to him and, in exchange for a commission percentage, gain access to all his coaching and training materials for free. This was a highly successful model for him, but it didn’t translate well into industries other than real estate. Pursuing Results When Matt ventured into podcasting on his own, he was doing Facebook Live shows fairly regularly, and found that in order to keep up and keep the quality high, he needed help. He assembled a team that would let him focus on the content and the conversation, while handling day-to-day stuff like bookings, backend work and social media. And, well, the team got very good. When word spread through his podcasting audience about how he was managing to churn out such a high volume of high-quality work, people started asking to effectively rent out his production team. This worked for awhile, but customizing the approach for every single client generated a lot of mixed results, and so Matt and his team got down to standardizing their offering into a clear, defined product that would meet client needs and deliver, well, results. Podcasts As a product For Matt and PursuingResults, specializing their service down into a packaged-up product offering—that is, a clearly-defined service designed to meet a particular need, with minimal customization—has been hugely successful. Matt stresses that, while less customization might seem limiting at first, the reality is anything but. “We're not saying hey, go ahead and fit your round peg into my square hole, because it's easier for me to deliver, because I want to take more time off on Friday afternoons. It's not about that. It's about starting with the ideal client and what gets them the best results. It's starting with a methodology and finding an ideal result, and then going out and finding as many of those ideal clients as possible, and giving them that exact methodology. To me, that's actually serving them at a higher level.” Matt’s tips for moving from product to service: Let go of the ego. Your clients think their problems are completely unique; you think your services are completely unique, but it most cases, neither of those things are really true. Find your ideal client. Who are you best equipped to serve? What kind of client are you very good at delivering to—and, for that matter, very excited to deliver to? Find the process for that client. Once you know what kind of client you want to work for, nail down the exact, specific processes that will meet these clients’ particular needs best and deliver the very best results. Find and market to those specific clients. Find your niche, and own your niche. When your work is highly specialized, you gain access to tight-knit networks of similar clients, and their testimonials about your product will connect well with others in the niche. Process As he gets more and more hands-off with his production company, turning more day-to-day responsibilities over to his team, Matt has a defined approach for making sure everyone is still turning out great results. He calls it “I do it, we do it, you do it.” It’s pretty simple: Initially, he goes through all the processes himself, documenting as he goes. Then, he goes through them together with his team, tweaking where necessary and making things as clear as possible so that everyone can understand the system. Only when the processes are optimized and clear to everyone does he move to the handoff, a.k.a. the “you do it” stage, where team members can follow the process themselves with no trouble. The other part of assuring quality, for him, is continuously applying and revisiting processes. He and his team make heavy use of checklists in Trello, and if any deviation from the standard procedure needs to happen, they update the list to account for it. When mistakes happen, his first step is always to refer back to the process. If it was followed correctly and a mistake still happened, the process needs fixing. If it wasn’t followed correctly, then it was human error—and the process still needs fixing. Matt really believes in using systems and processes to account for natural human behaviour, rather than leaning on the unreasonable assumption that everyone on his team will be giving it 100%, forty hours a week, every single week. What’s Next For Podcasts? Matt says he’s seen podcasting go through a few different phases. First, the agency phase, where lots and lots of podcast production agencies popped up to do customized, end-to-end, hands-off production delivery, or as he calls it, the Done-For-You model. Next came the DIY wave, where podcast producers went the route of selling courses and tutorials to teach clients how they could make their own podcasts from scratch, with their own people and their own equipment—the Do It Yourself model. So what comes after DIY? Matt thinks it’s a bit of a blend: the Done-With-You model, as he calls it, where companies seeking to leverage podcasts for their businesses will want to train one person on their teams to manage podcasts as part of their overall branding and social media. He thinks the podcast production company’s role will be to bring in training, tools and systems to these businesses so that they can bring their podcasting in-house, with a promise of producer support along the way. Launch One-Time Product First or a Recurring Subscription? - Ep #14

Which One Should You launch First: A One-Time Product or A Recurring Subscription? If you have never launched a web site before or sold anything online, especially digital products, then I would NOT recommend starting with a subscription-based product right out of the gate. And on top of that, you should DEFINITELY not start with a high-ticket 1,000 dollar product. In the beginning, you will not have the copywriting skills, the marketing skills, the positioning skills, or the product development skills, or the ability to recruit JV's and affiliates, or the savvy to put it all together. No matter what kind of a superstar you've been in your day job, you simply won't have those skills when you are first starting out with your own membership site. Let me quickly touch upon the 3 basic monetization models. I call these DIY, DWY and DFY. DIY stands for Do it yourself, DWY stands for Done With You, and DFY stands for Done For You. DIY is the very basic level which is the basic fully automated online course where everything is delivered digitally. This is similar to the 1-site license we offer at DigitalAccessPass.com (DAP). Where the person who downloads the software can watch documentation videos and read how-to setup documentation and set up their web site themselves. Of course, we offer a lot of ticket-based support, but they don't get any 1-on-1 calls with us. DWY - Done with you - is slightly more advanced where you do things WITH them - again, to give you an example of what we do ourselves, we set up our users' membership site by working alongside our Platinum users. We do it on a live 1-on-1 call. Either myself or my wife Veena Prashanth - we will get on a call with you and ask you what you want to accomplish, what kind of content, what kind of products you wish to sell, and we tailor the set up of DigitalAccessPass - DAP - to fit your specific needs. There is simply no other program that is better than the 1-on-1 coaching and consulting we offer. So that includes the software and the 1-on-1 setup and training. That's your classic DWY - Done With You. You can charge more for DWY compared to DIY. And then there's the top-most tier - at least, it is top-most in most niches. Which is DFY - Done For You. We don't offer a Done-for-you option in our business at this time. In this model, the client does not want to do it themselves, they don't also want you to do it WITH them. They just want YOU to do it for them and tell them it's done. So at the lower end of Done-For-You are SEO services, marketing funnel set up, setup of big CRM's like Infusionsoft, traffic generation, Facebook campaign set up, etc - they all fall under this umbrella of DFY. Now, to this same tier, if you add 1-on-1 coaching and consulting, where you work with your clients first, find out their needs, customize the solution specifically for their needs, and THEN ALSO offer the backend services to get it done FOR them, that's probably where you can charge the most. So back to Keith. You said you are already selling a $1000 product upfront, followed by a monthly fee. That is absolutely a great model to follow. If you are already successfully selling a high-ticket item, then there's definitely no need to swap that out for continuity. What you are doing is already the best of both worlds - a big upfront payment, followed by continuity. This is the DFY tier I was talking about earlier. So if you were doing marketing consulting, then the big upfront fee - whether it is $1,000 or $5,000 or $10,000 - all of that goes towards, say, your initial coaching and consulting where you work with clients 1-on-1, figure out their requirements, analyze their business, find areas for improvement, come up with a plan to optimize their funnel, get more traffic, get more leads, improve conversion, and so on. And that's what the initial 1000 or 5000 could be for. Once that initial part is done, you could present them with a fantastic project report that summarizes all of the work done so far and tells them what they need to do next in order to get to where they want to be. And that's where your add-on services could come in, and you say, Hey Ravi, I have a team that can take all this stuff off your hands. And now here's 3 different tiers you could come in at for these services. And that would be your continuity tier, where you create 3-tiers - say, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with each tier offering more benefits than the other, and that could include not just your team's time, but also your own ongoing consulting and review of the business roadmap. Now, most importantly, remember this: Even if you launched a 100 dollar month program directly, your member would have to stay for 10 FULL months before you can earn that same 1,000 dollars from them. So 10 months of fees - if they don't cancel, if their credit card continues to work - if you keep delivering, if they don't lose focus - 10 full months of all that, at 100 dollars a month, would earn you 1000 dollars. BUT... if you are ALREADY charging that 1000 upfront, then your subscriber's lifetime customer value goes way way WAY up, because they are STARTING with a payment of 1000 dollars. And after that, all of the continuity payment you get from them is pure gravy. Now, another thing we tend to forget, is that a 1,000 dollar customer's mindset is going to be WAY different, in a good way of course, it's going to be WAY better compared to a 100 dollars a month client. No offense to anyone paying less. That's just how it is for the most part. Who would you rather serve? The person buying at the dollar store? Or the person buying at Walmart? Or the person shopping at an expensive jewelry store? See what I mean? The more expensive your product is, and the more they pay you, the more fun they usually are to work with, they require less hand-holding, need less support, will bother you less, will praise you more, and will refer more clients to you. Weird, but true! I didn't make that one up, ok? That means that if someone paid you 1000 dollars to begin with?? then the chances are very high that they will continue with your 100 dollar a month continuity afterwards. Because if they could afford to pay you that much upfront, then they definitely value their time... and what you are offering them in return. And they will not have a problem paying a small percentage of that to keep getting that value from you. Now, if you - Keith - had said you're not converting enough people to your 1000 dollar program, and because they don't get in, they're not even getting to the point of continuity, then that's an entirely different issue altogether. I'm going to talk about that in a different episode, because this topic is way too important to be left unfinished. Anyway, for now, the quick summary for you, Keith, is this: You are already selling the perfect hybrid model. Get a big chunk upfront, followed by continuity. This is probably THE BEST monetization model there is as far as continuty goes. Because the standard stick rate for the average membership is like between 3-6 months. That's like a very generalized number of course. But if you're getting lock in from them to the equivalent of 10 months upfront, and then add to that the mindset advantage you have with such customers paying for high-ticket items, then you now have the best kind of membership site there is. Big Chunk Upfront - Plus Backend Continuity - Membership Thy Shall Maketh Successful, like Yoda would say. All this and more in today's episode #14. Show notes available at http://SubscribeMe.fm/14/
