Gospel Fluency 101 / Introduction to Fluency

SouthCrest Church Sunday morning message, 1/7/24. We begin our new series, Gospel Fluency 101, guided by Jeff Vanderstelt's book “Gospel Fluency: Speaking the Truths of Jesus into the Everyday Stuff of Life.” Senior Pastor Matt McFadden introduces the idea of gospel fluency as “christian maturity.” Maturity is not simply arriving at some arbitrary biological age, but rather upon the obtaining of deep understanding. For example, when the subconscious dreams of a person learning a second language are in the new language—the person has become “fluent” when the secondary language flows from them without effort. Fluency requires knowledge, application and immersion.

In our communication of the gospel message, many of us overemphasize the fall, leading the conversation by starting with our sin. We inherited sin, but we were not created to be sinful. It is wiser for us to begin the gospel conversation by communicating the nature of God – “God is good.” Join Jackie and Preston for Part 1 of a conversation on engaging those around us with the gospel, and being anchored in love as we do so.Pre-order Jackie's book, Upon Waking: UponWakingBook.comWhat Is the Gospel? Sharing the Gospel is hard. For everyone. Even Paul the Gospel warrior asked people he'd never met to pray for him to have the courage to keep sharing the Gospel of Jesus clearly. Even though it's hard, there's hope for us all. Not in a technique, but in a Person. Jesus is able to help us share Jesus with anyone He's pursuing. It will require leaning into our weakness, praying a lot, and one or two other things that we'll talk about in our last message in Gospel Fluency this week. Footy season is upon us again. I wonder--what would you say is the easiest way to recognise a Port Adelaide fan as opposed to say a Crows fan? (Be nice please.) Now do Christians. What is the easiest way to spot a Christian? Is it the way they dress? Speak? What they do on Sunday morning? According to Jesus, there's just one thing that sets us apart: genuine love for each other. Love is harder than it sounds. But when it's missing from the life of a Christian or a Christian church, the consequences can be devastating. This Sunday we're in our second to last week of Gospel Fluency, and it's all about the Gospel in action. It's all about love. Every story has a hero. She might be a step ahead of everyone. He might be the only one with enough guts to do what it takes. Who is the hero of your story? Is it the fighter on the mirror? Or is it the one who fights for you when you just can't? Every religion but one says you are the hero. Work hard. Be good. Say you're sorry enough times. The Gospel says the work is done— the Hero of your story is the One who conquered death. And it's He who changes us— so that when we look in the mirror, we see new men and new women that reflect the Hero. Every week when we gather for worship, we take communion, otherwise known as the Lord's Supper. The bread and the wine are symbols representing the body and blood of Jesus. We tear the bread and pour out the cup to re-enact and remember the death of Jesus that opened the way for us who believe to have eternal life. In the earliest days of the church, the Lord's Supper was taken in the middle of a community meal. One where men and women, the rich and the poor, Jews and Gentiles ate together as a defiant demonstration of their blood-bought unity. These days Christians don't do regular community meals as a matter of course. But what if every meal we eat alone or with others carries spiritual significance? What if every bite we enjoy is actually an invitation to remember and worship Jesus? How do people change their behaviour? What about their ingrained habits? It all starts with the heart. To use Jesus' words-- out of the overflow of the heart, we do (or don't do) the things we do. So what does it take to change our hearts? Do we as Christians have a role to play in any of it? This Sunday we're back looking at Gospel Fluency -- and we're going to war against unbelief that overflows into all kinds of messy and sinful living. Learning a new language is never easy. But if you stick with it long enough, and you're immersed in the right community, before long, words and sentences will start to flow. Learning the language of the Gospel is no different. To be fluent, we have to start with the basics. The Gospel story starts with God -- you were created by God and belong to God. It ends with God together with His redeemed people. And right at the very middle, the hero-- God the Son Himself, Jesus Christ. The Gospel is the good news story we need to believe. Our new sermon series, based on the book Gospel Fluency by Jeff Vanderstelt https://www.amazon.com/Gospel-Fluency-Speaking-Truths-Everyday/dp/1433546035 To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it and commit to practicing it, over and over again. You must use it everyday until you actually start to think about life through it. Becoming fluent in the gospel happens the same way—after believing it, we have to intentionally rehearse it (to ourselves and to others) and immerse ourselves in its truths. Only then will we start to see how everything in our lives, from the mundane to the magnificent, is transformed by the hope of the gospel.

He has lived on 5 continents, so chances are that he'll be going somewhere else quite soon.He is an International Safety and Performance Coach (for humans and organizations), which he explains in detail on this podcast episode.  In one sentence, it is basically the science of systems-driven behavior and understanding of how and why people make mistakes.I always thought that there was some science reasoning behind my occasional decision making process. This occupation involves travel and sometimes to places where most of us would not even consider for a split second.Listen to why he was involved in some admirable work in North Korea and yes he did send a bouquet of flowers to the country's glorious leader as a goodwill gesture. With near misses in Libya and the Congo that could have ended badly, he has swam with great white sharks,  climbed an active volcano and consumed jungle plant medicine to name a few.His life is one big adventure, but even though some of his activities are somewhat risky,  it is all educational and fulfilling. You can find Ian here:https://www.linkedin.com/in/safetycoachhttps://facebook.com/ipcollins

Reports coming out of Iran say that the world’s fastest growing underground church movement is happening there. This, in spite of Iran being ranked the ninth worst place in the world for Christians to live because of religious violence and persecution. Women in Iran are especially driving the growth of the church there. God is on the move and it’s striking to hear about. Meanwhile, here in the West, Christianity is shrinking. People are leaving the church and our faith is increasingly out of fashion. Rather than viewing this change in the religious landscape as a threat, though, we believers in the US should view this as an opportunity. As our culture turns increasingly inward on itself, we have the chance to demonstrate the love of Christ as we lift our eyes up and out on those around us. You and I who are in Christ have the greatest story, we have the antidote for the growing despair and loneliness around us. Let’s be emboldened by our Iranian siblings in the Lord and share the love of Christ with those in our communities. The people may no longer be going to church, but we—the church—can go to the people. Everyone has the ability to work with their own energy. And yeah, we all need to get help from time to time with the big life issues when we’re blocked… getting help with what we can’t see and when we’re in resistance. But for the everyday energetic maintenance and everyday emotional processing, you can work with your energy to transform that at a vibrational level and create a new awareness for yourself. Most people either make their personal energetic work way too complicated or they fear the process. They don’t get what energy is... so they don't know how to work with it. In this episode, I take you through my thoughts on what energy is, and how you can start to work with your own energetic awareness (yes you have that!) to shift out of the stuck emotional blocks that might get you down.  If you've been looking for a way to manage your "everyday" energetic process, this is the starting place. Keep it simple, keep it real, and keep it grounded!

As mommas, we all fall short of the glory of God. What we need when that happens is to preach the gospel to ourselves again and again. But how do we actually do that? In this episode, Emily and Laura share how reminding yourself of the gospel is an important part of the Christian walk – but it requires some practice. To preach the gospel, we have to know the gospel. It’s the only thing that keeps us from being defined by the time we yelled in the car or hid in the pantry stress-eating dark chocolate. Momma, your true identity is secure in Christ – offering peace, hope, and joy in every moment.
