Week 1 in Concierge Medicine: Tools Needed to Start

My wife often jokes that I read 4-5 books simultaneously. It's true! If you own a digital book reader or use an audiobook app like Audible to consume books, then you've probably jumped between a title or two as well, depending on your mood.   By Editor, Concierge Medicine Today   I personally love bouncing between a few titles and topics. I think the secret is listening or reading one chapter at a time once or twice a week! Then, I jump onto a podcast path, perhaps with a similar author I find interesting in the car or during a workout.   But finding the right balance between learning and pleasure is important, especially FOR Doctors!   Reading a few books simultaneously helps me avoid getting stuck or bored. If a book or a chapter is too slow, allow yourself to skip a track or jump a few pages. Life is too short, and there are too many great books to push through painfully.   Throughout nearly the past two decades here at Concierge Medicine Today, we compiled a list of books that either I've read and found helpful or your peers and those we've interviewed over the years here at Concierge Medicine Today, our conference, the Concierge Medicine Forum, or our podcast, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast, have been recommended to us on this topic.   Note: If you're specifically only looking for books about Concierge Medicine, we included a few recommendations at the end of the article we would offer for your consideration as well.    In keeping with what we've learned today … “The best leaders are readers!” — here are some of the titles your peers have mentioned and a few more books that have come across our path we recommend Physicians consider —   Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection" by Charles Duhigg" "Radical Candor: Fully Revised & Updated Edition: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity" Hardcover – Big Book, October 1, 2019 by Kim Scott "No More Waiting Rooms: A Customer Service Road Map to Help Remarkable Medical Offices Navigate Their Way Towards an Irresistible Practice Where Gratitude Is on Repeat!" by Michael Tetreault "Counterclockwise: Using Peptides to Renew, Rejuvenate, and Rediscover" by Dr. Suzanne J Ferree "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" Paperback – December 29, 2020 by Greg McKeown (Author) "Designing for Health: The Human-Centered Approach" Hardcover – November 13, 2023 by Craig Joseph (Author), Jerome Pagani (Author) "Untangle Your Emotions: Naming What You Feel and Knowing What to Do About It" Hardcover – February 13, 2024 by Jennie Allen (Author) "Unstoppable Brain: The New Neuroscience that Frees Us from Failure, Eases Our Stress, and Creates Lasting Change" Hardcover – April 30, 2024 by Kyra Bobinet (Author) "Today Matters: 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow's Success" by John C. The Apostles' Teaching: Dedicated To The Gospel

I hear our Lord gently saying to us as we read Acts 2:42 (“and they were devoted to the Apostles' teaching”) “go and learn what this means.” These young Christians were barely dry. Not one of them had a New Testament handed to them as they came up out of the water, because it had not been written yet. Paul had not written his majestic letter to the Romans, or to the Corinthians, or to any of the churches for that matter. He wasn't even a Christian yet! With no New Testament, this early band of believers “devoted themselves to the Apostles' teaching.” What exactly did they devote themselves to? The sermon today is titled "The Apostles' Teaching." It is the third installment in our "Community" Series. The Scripture reading is from Acts 2:42 (ESV). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on May 7, 2023. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. Dedication takes time. It takes practice. It takes excitement and commitment. When you add love to time, practice, excitement, and commitment, what you get is devotion. What the New Testament calls for is intimate connection through deep commitment within a covenant community. One that blesses those inside, blesses those on the outside, puts the world on notice and causes the world to take notice. A people who inspire because they have been inspired. The sermon today is titled "Devotion." It is the second installment in our "Community" Series. As our virtual engagement with the wider world has increased, our local connections have diminished. In some ways the internet has become more real than our neighborhoods, and virtual "friendships" have replaced the real thing. This leaves us longing for a sense of place in a rootless world. Why are we so restless? Because we no longer know where we live. At the conclusion of John’s talk, co-hosts Center for Public Christianity Executive Director Josh Chatraw and New City Fellows alumnus Micah Vandegrift are joined by Abby Vandegrift, Micah’s wife and a New City Fellows alumnae, to reflect on John’s teaching and discuss how it applies to daily life. We talk about her faith journey, the liturgies that form our daily lives, and finding God in the suffering—the importance of liturgical prayer to give us words when we don't have the words. We also talk about how we can take God off trial and rest in his goodness, love and mercy in the midst of difficult and sad seasons through the hope of the resurrection. Why do black seminarians graduate with a lot more student debt than whites, and what does it mean for churches? A recent Gospel Coalition article by Alisa Childers argues that the word “deconstruction” is universally bad and should not be redeemed. Is she right or is it another example of Christians overreacting to a complicated issue? Then Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn take Childers' online quiz to determine whether they are progressive Christians. Anglican priest and author Tish Harrison Warren talks to Skye about her controversial New York Times column saying it's time to end online streaming worship services, and she argues that the pro-choice movement is hypocritical for not making the choice to keep a child easier. "We are creatures in time."Today, the Reverend Tish Harrison Warren explores patience as spiritual formation. She's an Anglican priest and author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, which was Christianity Today's 2018 Book of the Year, and Prayer in the Night: For Those Who Work, or Watch, or Weep. She recently started a weekly newsletter on faith in private and public life for The New York Times. She reflects on the human demand for control in both ordinary and extraordinary life events, from the line at the supermarket to the cancer ward; the recognition of human vulnerability and just hating the fact that we can't control what happens next; the temptation to break out of time; and the difficult balance between the urgent need for justice and the acceptance of our human and societal limits. The entire conversation is illuminated by the beauty of what Hans Urs Von Balthasar calls “the meekness of the Lamb which is led.”Part 6 of a 6-episode series on Patience, hosted by Ryan McAnnally-Linz.About Tish Harrison WarrenTish Harrison Warren is a priest in the Anglican Church in North America. Hence the importance of patience in the New Testament, which becomes the basic constituent of Christianity. More central, even the humility, the power to wait, to persevere, to hold out, to endure to the end, not to transcend one's own limitations, not to force issues by playing the hero or the titan, but to practice the virtue that lies beyond heroism: the meekness of the Lamb which is led.""We are creatures in time."Robert Wilken: "singular mark of patience is hope"Activism and patience together"Patience can get a bad rap, that Christians are just wanting to become bovine."Patience but not quietism, a long wait but not gradualismThe ultimate need to discern the momentClarence Jordan and Martin Luther King Jr.The practices of discernment for individuals and communitiesSocial media trains us to be impatientThe meaning of urgent change is changingInternet advocacy and a connected world makes us less patient people"It takes real work to slow down and listen to another person's perspective, especially if you disagree with them."We often don't have the patience to even understand someone else.Real conversations with real peopleSilence, solitude"Having a body requires an enormous amount of patience.""My kids are so slow. Undeceptions with John Dickson

Just when you imagine Christians are all so heavenly minded they're of no earthly use … the Bible itself brings us back to the earth. That's where the action is. In fact, the final great scene of the Bible doesn't have us all floating up to heaven. It has heaven coming down to earth. Down … to … earth. There's a lot in that phrase. As far as religions go, Christianity is arguably the most down-to-earth perspective you could imagine. LINKS Winnie The Pooh loves honey in the books and every movie he's in, but particularly the 2011 version we quoted from.  This episode is sponsored by Zondervan's new book, Becoming All Things by Michelle Ami Reyes Meet our guests for this episode: Andrew Wilson, London pastor and author of a new book called God Of All Things: Rediscovering the Sacred in an Everyday World Tish Harrison Warren, Anglican priest and author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life Read Psalm 19, which begins "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands."  Read more about CS Lewis' "supposals" ... and check out The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe while you're at it.  Watch the heartwarming Old People's Home for Four Year Olds. "There are no five easy steps to trusting God in darkness." Let's go back in time a little. Let's not talk about 2020 for a second. Let's talk about 2017. I don't know how things were for you in 2017, but in 2017, the Rev. Tish Harrison Warren had a terrible year. And it inspired a beautiful book. The book is called Prayer in the Night: for Those Who Work or Watch or Weep; and it takes up the subjects of pain and grief, in all their opaqueness, in all their dailyness, and our vulnerability in the face of them. It also takes up the way pain can shut down the very things we need most when pain comes: prayer, and a sense of God's presence. And yet, it's also a book about "average suffering" and "common heartache" -- it's not about a pandemic; and it's not a memoir. It's about the things most if not all of us will go through in our lifetimes, whatever the state of the world around us: the loss of people we love, loneliness, tragedies that don't space themselves out politely but come in a quick succession. And it's a book shaped around the practice of Compline. How do the prayers of Compline face and pray through the darkness and dangers of the night? Tish joins us today to talk about her book, and about her story. She is a priest in the Anglican Church in North America. Along with Prayer in the Night, she is the author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life, which was Christianity Today's 2018 Book of the Year. She has worked in a variety of ministries: as a campus minister, an associate rector, in ministries to those in addiction and poverty, and has most recently served as writer-in-residence at Church of the Ascension in Pittsburgh, PA. She is a monthly columnist with Christianity Today, and her articles and essays have appeared in many places including the New York Times. She interviewed here by the Rev. Dr. Wesley Hill, Associate professor of New Testament at Trinity School for Ministry. Purchase Tish Harrison Warren's new book, Prayer in the Night. In this episode,Tish Harrison Warren shares her painful story of miscarriage. Because miscarriage was a wordless experience, she recognized her need for words from her community. She grasped on to liturgies of lament, wrapping time-tested words around her grief in the presence of community. How do we pastor those who have experienced loss through miscarriage, stillbirth, infertility or a regretted abortion? Listen as Tish casts a vision of grief care through liturgy. Tish Harrison Warren is an Anglican Priest and the author of Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life. “Miscarriage, for me it was complex grieving. I mean this baby– this living and dying that was all happening right in my body . . .  it’s hard for even finding words for this. And I think that’s partly because in times of deep grief, words are given to us. That’s why we have funerals. And because we don’t have that typically for women that walk through miscarriage, it can be a wordless experience.” – Tish Harrison Warren Music: Kai Engel: Tumult, Harbor, Meekness, and Aspirato Tudor Consort: Kyrie Eleison Joelle Hochstedler: Pain and Abide with Me Special Thanks to Indelible Grace for granting us permission to record their arrangement of Abide With Me for use in this episode. It's easy to get exasperated and overwhelmed with the daily routines. Mounds of laundry. The piles of dirty dishes. The discipline that has to be doled out daily. But God never designed it to be this way. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV) When offered up to God, even the everyday tasks can be holy.Mopping the floors is ministry? Sounds ludicrous. And it felt especially ludicrous to me as I mopped floors this weekend only to find them dirtied by three sets of little feet this week. But bless God those little feet who can dirty and who are still here alive and breathing. That I get to provide a clean, stable and loving home for them is an honor. An honor that many women want, but can't have. Every act of service is counted worthy in God's eye. This small shift in perspective has changed my grumbling into holy wonder. God sees every little act of service and sacrifice I do and He honors it.Resources Mentioned:Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life by Tish Harrison WarrenReach Out and ChatJoin the conversation on social media by chatting about the show with the hashtag: #unfoldingwords Leave a comment: http://www.unfoldingwords.com/blog/episode29Connect with me on social media: Instagram (http://www.instagram.com/unfoldingwords) Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/nonsuperwoman) Facebook: (http://www.facebook.com/unfoldingwords) If you enjoyed this episode head on over to Apple Podcasts (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/unfolding-words/id1390433611?mt=2) or Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/unfolding-words?refid=stpr) kindly leave a 5-star rating, a review and subscribe!Ways to subscribe to Unfolding WordsClick to subscribe via Apple Podcasts (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/unfolding-words/id1390433611?mt=2)Click to listen on Google Podcast (http://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xODA5NDgucnNz)Click to subscribe via Spotify (http://open.spotify.com/show/3SfAJ6dbzkqZhPRMd5Rhsl?si=YdqW7JE4Qmynakt_ydPGMQ)Click to subscribe via Stitcher (http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/unfolding-words?refid=stpr)Click to subscribe via RSS (http://feeds.buzzsprout.com/180948.rss)Help Spread the Word:We'd love it if you could please share #Unfolding Words with your Twitter followers. Do you ever catch yourself wishing away the ordinary, mundane days of parenting — those moments that feel repetitive, exhausting, or spiritually dry? Maybe you carry guilt for not “praying enough,” or wonder when you'll ever have space for deep spiritual encounters again. In this week's episode, Brook and Elizabeth invite you to reimagine what prayer looks like in the midst of diapers, dishes, and daily routines. They explore the idea of praying the ordinary — cultivating an inner posture of attentiveness, availability, and surrender in even the most mundane moments.Drawing from real-time personal experiences, they share how to incorporate breath prayers into your day, practical ways to invite God into the small things, common obstacles to practicing ordinary prayer — and how to overcome them. With honesty and hope, Brook and Elizabeth remind us that you are never too ordinary for the presence of God. He delights in showing up in the unnoticed spaces, and there is a heavenly reward for living in righteousness and rejoicing in the ordinary.Breath Prayers You Can Borrow:Inhale: “Lord, you're my strength.” Exhale: “Help me love with patience.”Inhale: “You know my child.” Exhale: “Better than I do.”Inhale: “Father, shape my heart…” Exhale: “…to reflect yours”Inhale: “I surrender control.” Exhale: “I trust your care.”Inhale: “Come, Holy Spirit.” Exhale: “Guide my parenting today.”Scripture Mentioned: Colossians 3:17, Genesis 1:26-28, Revelation 3:19-20, Psalm 23 + Romans 12:1Books Mentioned: Prayer by Richard Foster, Domestic Monastery: Creating Spiritual Life at Home by Ronald Rolheiser, The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence + Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life by Tish Harrison WarrenMotherhood Retreat 2025: More Info + Purchase TicketsJoin Our Legacy BuildersWatch on YouTubeFollow Us on Instagram: @intentional_parents @brook_mosser @emosserFREE Text Message Daily Devotional MerchGrab a Copy of Our Book:Raising Passionate Jesus Followers (Now available in audiobook!)BlogThe Intentional Film Series
