Young partygoers might know Man Power, AKA Geoff Kirkwood, as the earnest geezer going back-to-back with DJs like Ewan McVicar, Paul Woolford, La La and Skream—peak-time specialists with a fine line in boofy bangers and ravey techno. Kirkwood is also a dab hand at the kind of elliptical house and deep cut detours favored by '00s labels like DFA and Optimo. In spite of a long track record as a producer and promoter, if you had to boil Kirkwood's work in recent years down to a single quality, it might be altruism. He hails from North Shields, a small town fringing the boundary of Newcastle in England's oft-neglected North East, and wears his heritage proudly. The Me Me Me label boss's involvement in a flurry of civic restoration, and no-filter paeans to the importance of working class involvement in culture, have become as central to his life as music-making itself. For an accomplished DJ who has played at nearly every good club you could name, that's no small feat. So which side of Man Power were we in for? The answer on RA.940 is: both. '60s free verse poetry, Zebra Katz, Gesaffelstein and John Carpenter in the opening stretch? Makes sense. Octave One punching through Rozalla? You got it. An extended Joe Claussell workout atop Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place"? Why not. In Kirkwood's hands, it all goes down as smooth as a pint of Newcastle Brown. @manpower-1 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/940

In this episode of New Politics, we explore the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of Australia's political, economic, and international affairs.First, we discuss Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's successful visit to China, which has played a crucial role in stabilising the Australia–China relationship. We take a closer look at how this relationship was previously strained by the accusations made by former Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former Defence Minister Peter Dutton, who alleged that China was responsible for the outbreak of COVID-19 and we needed to prepare for war over Taiwan. While it was always expected that the Australia–China relationship would eventually be repaired, it required extensive diplomatic work to remove the tariffs and sanctions imposed by China on Australian exporters. We analyse the significance of these developments and whether the Albanese government is receiving due credit for their efforts.Shifting our focus to the economic front, we assess the political consequences of the thirteenth consecutive interest rate hike since May 2022. With this ongoing trend, there are growing concerns about its implications for Australians, especially those with mortgages and loans. We explore the intricate connection between politics and interest rates in Australia and the challenges that lie ahead for the Labor government in managing this economic issue. In the international arena, we discuss the persistent Gaza bombings by the Israeli military, which have sparked outrage worldwide and the rising death toll, particularly among Palestinian children, has drawn sharp criticism. We analyse the mounting international pressure on the Israeli government and the urgent need for a resolution to this humanitarian crisis. Finally, we inspect the latest Newspoll results, indicating that the Labor government is still leading with a 52 per cent two-party preferred vote, while the Liberal–National Coalition trails at 48 per cent. However, Prime Minister Albanese's high disapproval rating raises some issues about how the next federal elections will be played and consider the implications for the political landscape in Australia. Join us as we navigate the complexities of Australia's current affairs, offering in-depth analysis and insights into the diplomatic triumphs, economic challenges, and leadership dynamics that shape the nation's future.
What a show! Radiohead @ Bonnaroo June 17, 2006 is insanely good. We hear 4 songs from their epic 28 song set. Nude, Lucky, You & Whose Army? and Everything In Its Right Place. Insanely good.
Nick and Austin don't need too much wine or sleeping pills to get through the last songs on Kid A. Just get ready for a discussion of old IBM computers, Wagner operas, and Bo Burnham. Nick forces Austin to listen to "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," while they both rave about Alice Coltrane. For some inexplicable reason, the 1997 film Titanic comes up. Season three delves into the wilds of Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac. Prepare for multiple semi-serious discussions of the unconscious, the terror of fairy tales, and the late 90s phenomenon of adding a DJ to every rock band. They start by exploring the first three tracks of Kid A, but can you play any of them on guitar? Nick also tries to dispel some common narratives about Kid A, while Austin wades into the world of free jazz. For the past two weeks, our series on summer music festivals has uncovered the interplay of festival fashion and music and examined festival subcultures. But we've so far overlooked an essential reason that people attend music festivals: to experience transformational joy. At the start of summer 2021 it seemed like the pandemic was waning and that live music was coming back. But now, heading into the fall with the Delta variant, the fate of live music is once again in question. Caught in this limbo, we thought it might be a good time to get nostalgic and reflect on joyous music festival moments as we hope for more live music in the future. This week's episode features seven stories from listeners about their most surprising and wonderful moments at festivals past. The first story comes from musician and producer Dave Harrington of the band Darkside, who was once helped out of a musical rut by a Phish festival set Songs Phish (live Aug 4, 2017) - Everything In Its Right Place, Axis Bold As Love, Prince Caspian Darkside - Only Young Music scored by Zach Tenorio of Arc Iris Learn more about your ad choices. The power of words can change lives, and the power of revenge can live for a long time in Benjamin Stevenson's crime novel 'The Other Side Of Midnight'. Boys need a discourse and language that help them grapple with the challenges faced on the road to maturity. Tobias McCorkell explores this notion in his novel, 'Everything In Its Right Place', as his protagonist ‘crosses the river ‘ - the social classes that divide Melbourne.
In this week’s episode we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series to chat about one of the best live bands of the last 30 years, who inadvertently took some important cues from The Grateful Dead: Radiohead. Diving into their performance from June 17, 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, we explore the ways in which the band structures their gigs, their approach to road-testing certain tunes, and their own brand of experimentation within their live show. The show is highlighted by an expertly-crafted setlist which focuses on their career as a whole while previewing some of their best tracks off their soon-to-be-released (at the time) 7th album, In Rainbows. Opening with “There There” before launching into “2+2=5” and “15 Step” set the tone for the night. Elsewhere, “Videotape” has perhaps its strongest performance ever, while “Dollars and Cents,” “The National Anthem” and “How To Disappear Completely” showcases the band’s ability to stretch out ideas in the live setting. Within their extended double encore, the band dips into their Kid A/Amnesiac period for excellent takes on “Pyramid Song,” “Like Spinning Plates,” “Idioteque” and the show closing “Everything In Its Right Place.”36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. There have been any number of bands that started out in one mode only to wind up in another sooner or later. In one of our film documentaries, Amanda Anne Platt talked about thinking that she was a rock and roller at first, only to have an artist friend tell her that the songs she was writing were country songs instead. The scenario where young musicians bang out power chords early on before growing into an acoustic adulthood is fairly common. And then there are hybrids: pioneering acoustic guitarist Billy Strings said that he learned to play music by playing bluegrass, but he learned how to perform by playing in a metal band. The band Elonzo Wesley is unique in this conversation, not in that its members have largely rock and roll beginnings which evolved into an acoustic present, but in the approach that they use in expanding their sound far beyond just these two points in the musical spectrum. Their lyrics set them apart as well, revealing a keen awareness of the human condition. And their songs are good no matter what the backdrop. (R to L) Dennis Contreras, Taylor Winchester and Jeremy Davis perform at the Fillmore in Charlotte, NC In this episode, Elonzo Wesley members Jeremy Davis, Taylor Winchester and Dennis Contreras talk about the concept of their sound, how influences like Radiohead are still present in their music, the inclusive nature of the Charlotte music scene, and an after hours tour story that ended surprisingly better than it began. Along the way, you will hear music from their performances in March 2020 at Pisgah Brewing in Black Mountain, NC and at WNCW just ahead of that show, plus their cover of a song by My Morning Jacket. We get commentary from writer and photographer Daniel Coston about the band and his Queen City hometown, too. After the wild success of OK Computer, Radiohead was under immense pressure from critics and fans to provide a worthy follow-up. Several hoped for an OK Computer part two, with the same intricate, guitar-based melodies. But the band was burnt out. After several years of touring and promoting their third record, Thom Yorke became ill, and Phil Selway said the band was worried that their success had turned them into a one-trick band. Plus, according to Colin Greenwood, the band felt like they needed to completely reinvent themselves after other groups began adopting OK Computer-esque sounds. Disillusioned with rock music, and feeling the genre had run its course, Yorke turned to electronica artists like Aphex Twin. Their emphasis on sounds and textures over melody and lyrics intrigued Yorke. So he put down his guitar, sat down at the piano, and began experimenting. The first song he wrote was “Everything In Its Right Place,” which would become the opening track on Kid A. This album revolutionized Radiohead’s sound and was later heralded as the best album of its decade by both Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. In this episode we'll learn about the layers of musical history embedded in Radiohead's work from this period. Bob Fink, chair of the Music Industry Minor at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music, will discuss the musical influences that formed “Idioteque” and suggest how Kid A as a whole precursors contemporary music. Then we’ll hear from another musicologist from the UCLA School of Music: Jessica Schwartz. She’ll examine “Pyramid Song,” which was also developed during the Kid A sessions. Although recorded during the same period as “Idioteque,” it was not released until the following year on the band’s follow-up record, Amnesiac. And in contrast to the electronica of “Idioteque,” “Pyramid Song” bears a greater resemblance to the music of jazz greats like Charles Mingus.
