Jessica Stuart is a multi-instrumentalist and an acclaimed songwriter with an international fan base. Not only taking the lead on stage, she's also a skilled producer and in-demand side person working across genres. I've known Jessica for over a decade and have been inspired by her since our collaborations on stage as performing songwriters. I was especially moved when I saw  a documentary she both stars in and composed the soundtrack for. The CBC documentary, spearheaded by Oscar winning director Daniel Roher, follows Jessica's decades-later return to Japan to look for her childhood friend who had mysteriously disappeared. In our chat, she talks about the shock of the film's viral, worldwide reach with millions watching the most intimate moments in her search for someone she thought she'd lost forever. We had so much to catch up on and I was eager to ask Jessica about what she has learned on her way to becoming a top-tier musician, touring internationally and earning big stage opportunities with major musical theatre productions. We talk about what is worth working towards- like better conditions for musicians to be appreciated.  Beyond her creative projects, Jessica opens up about going to therapy and changing her perspective on making confident choices. She told me about how deepening her focus by refusing to compromise on quality has led to both better work life balance and more exciting career opportunities.  We dive into an ongoing success first born from a rejection: her songwriters' residency “JS Presents”, held monthly at Toronto's treasured haven for musicians, the Tranzac Club. She has created a reflective space of her own for her and other songwriters to perform in an intimate “listening room” setting, where artists are given the respect and compensation they deserve- along with the opportunity to world debut a new composition!  Jessica's dedication to building spaces for musicians to feel safe in experimenting and creating shines through wherever she goes. This episode brought back so many music making memories for me, and even if you aren't a musician yourself, I know you'll connect with Jessica's story. - - - When Vancouver-born, guitarist, koto player, vocalist and songwriter Jessica Stuart moved to Toronto, quitting work as vintage clothing buyer for a career in music, her goals were simple – release an album of original songs, hear her music on the radio, and satisfy her wanderlust on tour around the world. Stuart's trio The Jessica Stuart Few checked the final box with their first Asian tour (and Top 40 single in Japan) in 2013, and since then, have played music festivals and been heard on airwaves from Australia to Germany and beyond. Having made a name for herself through signature rhythmic and harmonically adventurous jazzy art pop, Jessica has tapped into a new creative stream under artist name, JESSA, smashing layers of playful guitars, koto and vocals into an indie-jazz-pop package, singing about trying to keep the joy in everyday life while navigating this weird world and all of its curve-balls. Also an in-demand side player, Stuart can be found on stage supporting original artists' projects (i.e. Fefe Dobson; Wild Black; WiztheMC), as member of popular tribute acts (i.e. Idioteque; UK Calling), and as sub guitarist for Mirvish Productions' production of SIX. If you hadn't yet heard Jessica's music through her Best Album win at the Independent Music Awards, her five songs in the finals of the Canadian Songwriting Competition, or the record crushing, tear-jerking CBC documentary about her time living in Japan as a child directed by Academy Award winner Daniel Roher (Finding Fukue, Nov 2018, 14 million + views, featuring Stuart's musical score), then you'll get to know her through her latest full-length album, Simple Songs and newest single, Give It Back, It's Mine. - - - www.jessicastuartmusic.com www.joanbeckowlegacy.com http://www.idioteque.ca/ https://instagram.com/jessicastuartmusic https://www.youtube.com/@JESSAakaJessicaStuartMusic https://www.facebook.com/jessicastuartmusic - - -  Lauren's Best invites you to curiously consider art and life as host, Lauren Best, illuminates the creative process as an entrepreneur, mother and interdisciplinary artist. Parliamo della rassegna “Crush” all’Old Square

Here's a very niche episode from last year that previously was only available to my Patrons and its all about the band Radiohead on the twenty year anniversary (last year) of their divisive and seminal album, "Kid A". With a new introduction and outroduction I ramble on about why I love them so much and music in general, certain associations I have with certain songs and I end with a troubadour cover of "Idioteque", one of my faves from the LP. In this week’s episode we momentarily diverge from our trek through the larger Dick’s Picks series to chat about one of the best live bands of the last 30 years, who inadvertently took some important cues from The Grateful Dead: Radiohead. Diving into their performance from June 17, 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, we explore the ways in which the band structures their gigs, their approach to road-testing certain tunes, and their own brand of experimentation within their live show. The show is highlighted by an expertly-crafted setlist which focuses on their career as a whole while previewing some of their best tracks off their soon-to-be-released (at the time) 7th album, In Rainbows. Opening with “There There” before launching into “2+2=5” and “15 Step” set the tone for the night. Elsewhere, “Videotape” has perhaps its strongest performance ever, while “Dollars and Cents,” “The National Anthem” and “How To Disappear Completely” showcases the band’s ability to stretch out ideas in the live setting. Within their extended double encore, the band dips into their Kid A/Amnesiac period for excellent takes on “Pyramid Song,” “Like Spinning Plates,” “Idioteque” and the show closing “Everything In Its Right Place.”36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. Professor CJ returns to discuss the history of divide-and-conquer and divide-and-rule strategies. Unanimity [literally of one mind] is a sad and dangerous thing on a national scale. But so is a civil war. This year the American people were offered a chance to find common cause in a crisis. But the government and media seemed to encourage them to fight over mask-wearing instead. You remember right? It was right around the time the average person was starting to feel the impact of overreactive lockdown polices. (April and May) When the mask fight starting getting boring and predictable, surprise! Time for a race war. (June-September) Is this just the state of things? Is it just the tension of a pandemic or an election year? Or are we the targets of some new version of one the oldest tricks in the history book? We'll also discuss foreign subversion, referencing a former-KGB operative's revelations about the Soviet strategy of demoralizing and destabilizing the American people during the cold war. Some initial writer's block leads to unexpected creative developments as the band spreads their wings and experiments in their own studio. Napster enters the fold and has a surprising (lack of) effect on album sales, Ed O'Brien keeps a daily record, and Jonny Greenwood buys some very expensive antique synthesizers as we cover the years 1999-2001 in the life of Radiohead.Primary sources:https://www.amazon.com/Exit-Music-Radiohead-Mac-Randall/dp/0385333935https://citizeninsane.eu/https://web.archive.org/web/20060701093047/http://www.ateaseweb.com/https://web.archive.org/web/20190413025533/http://www.greenplastic.com/https://web.archive.org/web/20080913030118/http://www.followmearound.com/http://thekingoflimbspart2.com/https://web.archive.org/web/20060701093047/http://www.ateaseweb.com/

After the wild success of OK Computer, Radiohead was under immense pressure from critics and fans to provide a worthy follow-up. Several hoped for an OK Computer part two, with the same intricate, guitar-based melodies. But the band was burnt out. After several years of touring and promoting their third record, Thom Yorke became ill, and Phil Selway said the band was worried that their success had turned them into a one-trick band. Plus, according to Colin Greenwood, the band felt like they needed to completely reinvent themselves after other groups began adopting OK Computer-esque sounds. Disillusioned with rock music, and feeling the genre had run its course, Yorke turned to electronica artists like Aphex Twin. Their emphasis on sounds and textures over melody and lyrics intrigued Yorke. So he put down his guitar, sat down at the piano, and began experimenting. The first song he wrote was “Everything In Its Right Place,” which would become the opening track on Kid A. This album revolutionized Radiohead’s sound and was later heralded as the best album of its decade by both Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. In this episode we'll learn about the layers of musical history embedded in Radiohead's work from this period. Bob Fink, chair of the Music Industry Minor at UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music, will discuss the musical influences that formed “Idioteque” and suggest how Kid A as a whole precursors contemporary music. Then we’ll hear from another musicologist from the UCLA School of Music: Jessica Schwartz. She’ll examine “Pyramid Song,” which was also developed during the Kid A sessions. Although recorded during the same period as “Idioteque,” it was not released until the following year on the band’s follow-up record, Amnesiac. And in contrast to the electronica of “Idioteque,” “Pyramid Song” bears a greater resemblance to the music of jazz greats like Charles Mingus.

In a wide-ranging conversation, we talk to Pranav Jani about Marxism and colonialism. Pranav is an associate professor of English at Ohio State University and a long-time activist and organizer with the International Socialist Organization (ISO). Pranav describes his evolution from an apolitical college student to his first encounters with the writings of Marx on India—and how he went beyond a few selected excerpts to a deeper engagement with Marx’s thought and its evolution. We also talk about postcolonial theory, and Pranav explains what insights he gained from that field of study as well as the limitations he ran up against working within it. Another theme running throughout our interview is the importance of combining activism and theory for Pranav’s understanding of and commitment to socialism. He talks about how it was the anti-colonial revolt against the British that began to shift Marx’s own ideas about India. In Pranav’s own life and political outlook, the importance of struggle is paramount. We talk about his experience as an Indian revolutionary moving from the East Coast to Columbus, Ohio, and what he learned from helping to build a strong presence for the ISO in Ohio. One of the themes of our discussion about his work in Ohio is a critical examination of some of the punditry about “red-state America” and the 2016 elections. Pranav describes the political picture in central Ohio and the importance of a more nuanced understanding of the working class as well as the socialist commitment to fighting both exploitation and oppression. In our opener, we talk about a major opus on climate change published recently in the New York Times Magazine, titled "Losing Earth," whose conclusions we deem essentially reactionary. The author, Nathaniel Rich, has compiled a dense history of a decade of climate summits, high-level boardroom meetings and political hearings, but somehow concludes that human nature—and our failure to sacrifice for long-term needs—is to blame for the failure to act to prevent climate catastrophe. We reach a different conclusion: that capitalism is to blame. Links for our interview with Pranav Jani: *Pranav developed his ideas on Marxism, revolution and colonialism more deeply for a talk he presented at Socialism 2018. You can listen to the audio at We Are Many: http://bit.ly/PranavS18 *Pranav also wrote a feature article for Socialist Worker describing in more detail “What the Indian rebels taught Marx” (http://bit.ly/MarxIndiaSW) *The International Socialist Review (ISR) review of Vivek Chibber’s book on postcolonialism can be found here: (http://bit.ly/PranavISR) Links for our intro on climate catastrophe: *The NYT Magazine piece on Losing Earth (http://bit.ly/LosingEarth) *Naomi Klein had a good rejoinder to this article in the Intercept (http://bit.ly/KleinLosingEarth), and we engage with her material in this episode as well.

As we upload this, much of the USA is in a wintry hell--we're currently snowed in at the More Of Thatcave, dreading rolling blackouts. When we recorded this a few days back, people weren't yet fearing for their lives due to power outages, so we were able to be a bit more cheery about it all. Here's hoping this episode can bring you and yours a few degrees of coziness and (musical) warmth. Today the gang runs down our Top 5 Winter Albums! What makes a winter album? Inquire within! Our opening song is "Never Say Never Again" by More of That. You can listen to us on all major streaming platforms and on [Bandcamp.](http://moreofthat.bandcamp.com) Closing music is "Idioteque" by Radiohead (for obvious reasons).
