Februrary 24, 2019 - Leviticus - The Day of Atonement Reading Plan Leviticus 1:1-17 In this offering, we see images of Christ’s full dedication to the Father expressed through His life obedience and His willing sacrifice on the cross. Christ gave Himself fully for us to make atonement for our sin. Our only reasonable response is total surrender to Him. The voluntary nature of this offering captures both Christ’s willingness to endure shame on our behalf and our proper motivation in living for Him. Our obedience is not to be offered by compulsion, but instead to be motivated by love and gratitude. What area of your life are you holding back instead of fully surrendering to God? What is preventing you from giving this to God joyfully? Leviticus 2:1-16 We can look at this offering, like the burnt offering, and see how it points to Christ. He is the One who demonstrated unmatched humility and generosity in taking on the flesh, coming to earth, and offering Himself so we might have forgiveness and eternal life. Believers should also seek to demonstrate scandalous generosity to those around us, so they might see the beauty and power of the gospel. How can you be more generous this week with your time and resources? Leviticus 3:1-17 Jesus was the willing sacrifice who provided forgiveness for our sin to remove the barrier between God and those who trust in Him. Because we have been given Christ’s righteousness, we are not spiritually neutral before God; He has restored relationship between holy God and forgiven humanity. As believers, each of our days should be marked by deep gratitude and joy for the relationship with God we have been given in Christ. What can you do today to live out and enjoy the relationship with God that Christ has provided? Leviticus 4:1–5:19 Jesus’ sacrifice was necessary to provide forgiveness that gives the believer confidence that he or she is accepted by God. Not even a single sin remains to bring condemnation from God. This is the source of the believer’s hope and joy. Even as believers continue to sin, remembering the scope and depth of Christ’s sacrifice for sin should cause us to seek to cast aside sin and to live holy lives pleasing to the Lord. What sins have you committed but not yet confessed to God? How can you rest in His complete forgiveness and acceptance of you in Christ? Leviticus 16:1-34 Likewise, the people of Israel were to practice self-denial because humility—that of Christ taking on the flesh and being the Suffering Servant and that of a person who comes to Him in total neediness for salvation—is a defining characteristic of the gospel. Which do you find more difficult to maintain as a follower of Christ rest or self-denial? Why? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/head-above-water/support

A community favorite of mine is back to update us on her journey. Rena (same name in the chatroom) is someone I admire greatly. I’ve met her in person on multiple occasions and she is someone who we can all learn from given her willingness to talk about anything and everything, particularly the “bad stuff”. She’s a solid trader, no doubt about it, but like all traders she suffers from certain voices that have caused her hiccups. She has pressed on through perseverance and encouragement and has turned the corner in her trading. She’s on the right path, now it’s just a matter of staying laser focused to remain on the path (which she is doing a great job of!). Don’t miss this episode, let’s get to it! Show Notes Today we revisit with Rena. As we learned in her last podcast, her son was a large factor in her getting back into the market at a serious level. He has had quite an interest in the market and it was something they both had in common. While Rena has had many successful trades utilizing a rubberband type strategy, the problem she has is managing the ones that do not work. Those losers ultimately wipe out a month or more of profit in one shot. She wanted to start 2018 on a clean slate and decided to close all of her positions. This led her to take a $30k loss but the important thing here is that there is no psychological baggage for her to carry into the new year. Volatility picked up in Februrary and this led to some losses for her ‘farm’ account. However, she was still able to keep her losses to only $1,000 by utilizing day trading to take advantage of the intraday volatility. Rena decided to reduce her account size to ensure that she wasn’t even able to take a huge loss. This size account led her to a ‘death by 1000 cuts’ since she was mainly playing defense instead of playing any offense. After a good conversation with her husband, Rena realized that if she didn’t take any huge blowout losses she could always recover. She is content to take 1-3k losses because she knows she can make that back up. She has now been green the last 6 months after this enlightening moment. Quotes One of the reasons I kept getting back into the market was my son was interested from about the time he was a freshman. I never thought I would be that stupid to max out my account on one bad trade. I got rid of everything I had to start 2018 on a clean slate. The people in the chatroom know way more about my losses than my wins. That’s when I need support. They keep me accountable. Can I make this loss up? Because 99% of the time if I get out with even a 1,000 dollar loss I can make that up. I’ve had a fairly healthy balance with money. I know what it’s like to have money and I know what it’s like to have none. Links Rena’s First Episode: https://claytrader.com/podcast/episode110/

What is stopping you from going after your business idea? Is it the people around you? Lack of knowledge? Or your own fear? The co-founders of UBooker, Claudia Wagner and Diana Gaertner, mulled over the idea of streamlining the model booking process for 7-8 years. Being models themselves, they had even been conducting unofficial market research over the span of their careers, which was about 20 years. They found that a lot of models were frustrated with the tedious process of booking jobs, as well as clients with finding models for their project. After seeing that the modeling industry wasn't going to adapt the process to the fast-paced, technological times, Diana and Claudia made the decision to finally go for it. With the help of their two other co-founders, Andrea Losso and Nicola Scagnolari, they took their idea and translated it to a well-thought out business plan, and created a website. With UBooker launching Februrary of 2017, Claudia and Diana were able to take a process that typically lasted a couple days and shorten it to around 10 minutes. During the Carnival season which starts on Februrary 24th in 2017 there are parties in the streets, local Calypso musicians play their steel drums, and the women wear slinky bikini-type costumes. Audiotraveller Henry Barchet talks about the celebrations with Shelley-Ann de Gazon and Cherie-Ann Pascall from Trinidad, while comedian and musicologist Chako Habekost, who used to live in Trinidad and even had a carnival hit in the Trinidad charts, explains the background of the Carnival tradition.
Daniel Pinchbeck has successfully morphed himself into of the most sought after, poignant and razor sharp social critics and consciousness surveyors of our time. His latest book "How Soon is Now" is like a how-to survival guide for the complicated world we are forging our way into. He stopped by the kitchen table to talk about the book, going "down and in", some politics, new economic systems and a whole bunch of other stuff. One hour with Daniel is just scratching the surface. It was a pleasure to spend some time with him and I hope we get to do it again. Also, be sure to pick up a copy of "How Soon Is Now" when it's released in February of 2017. This episode is the return of David Bos, a guru of organic, biodynamic farming, and one of Inside Winemaking's most popular guests. For those that have yet to listen to David's initial interview ( #011 "Beyond the Cowhorn" from Februrary, 2015) I would suggest listening to that first. During his round two we get explore compost, its creation, and how to source high quality material. David gives a background on his early experiments with biochar, something that has a potential to aid compost in the soil and also describes rock dust, AKA Azomite. In the second part of our discussion we talk about the critical elements of running on organic spray program for grapes, specifically to control powdery mildew. There is a lot of hippie information about "natural wines" out there and David gets frank regarding what he considers natural and how organic farming fits into the battle with powdery mildew. Our conversation weaves in and out of technical farming and then even touches into some of the biodynamic preparations and how, and when, they are used in the vineyard. Always one to put his words into action, you can check out David's own wines at BosWine.com and the new Wine and Swine Club. As part of the college’s promotion of Internet Safety Day on the 9th Februrary, the Felpham FM hosts created a special podcast offering some advice on how to stay online for our younger students.
Stewart O'Nan is the guest. His new novel, West of Sunset, is available now from Viking. It is the official Februrary pick of The Nervous Breakdown Book Club. Maureen Corrigan, writing for The Washington Post, says “[The] grim yet undeniably fascinating last act of Fitzgerald’s life is the subject of Stewart O’Nan’s gorgeous new novel. . .West of Sunset is a pretty fine Hollywood novel, too, but it’s an even finer novel about a great writer’s determination to keep trying to do his best work.” And George Saunders says “O'Nan is an incredibly versatile and charming writer. This novel, which imagines F. Scott Fitzgerald's troubled time in Hollywood (with cameos by Dorothy Parker, Bogie, and Hemingway), takes up (like much of O'Nan's work) that essential conundrum of grace struggling with paucity. One brilliant American writer meditating on another--what's not to love?” Monologue topics: paranoia, pregnancy, fear, hovering, mail. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Also discussed is Asteroid 2012 DA14 which passes the Earth on the 15th February and the passing of Comet ISON through our neighbourhood between November and December of 2013. Warning: Contains swear words on few occasions. Note: ImmortalmanUK towards the end of the podcast begins prepping dinner. Will be some background noise lol

I had a thought when I appeared as a guest on the Salty Dogs Podcast ( https://www.saltydogspodcast.com/blog/how-to-deal-with-church-hurt ) back in Februrary, "I cannot hold others accountable for the wounds they inflict on me." This is a blog expanding on that thought.
