Joining us this week is Joshua Blakemore, CVPM, RVT, FFCP of Onion River Animal Hospital in Burlington, Vermont to talk about what it really takes to prepare the next generation of veterinary technicians not just for graduation but for the day-to-day demands of clinical practice. Josh is a standout practice manager and longtime technician advocate who was recently named VHMA's Practice Manager of the Year, but Josh is a humble person who has never lost touch with where he started: in the kennel, working his way up with persistence and purpose. Listen as we unpack the often overlooked disconnect between academic training and real-world application, getting candid about the gaps that we have witnessed in new technician graduates - from handling basics like restraint and jugular draws to dealing with complex procedures with confidence. Josh shares what he's doing at his hospital (and beyond) to help ensure that today's students become tomorrow's professionals, including his involvement in college advisory boards and his commitment to skill-driven externships. We also explore some broader challenges in technician education from the uneven quality of online programs to the really surprising ways that some hospitals may unintentionally stifle growth. With firsthand experiences, practical insights, and a clear call for mentorship, Josh sheds some light on the kind of support that vet techs really need not just to survive but also to thrive in the profession. It's all about making sure that they stay, grow, and succeed once they arrive. Show Notes: [3:01] - Josh made note of Vermont's lack of licensure requirements and worked to improve tech training in hospitals. [6:40] - Josh highlights the importance of hands-on skills in externship programs, especially phlebotomy. [9:13] - Students should work in hospitals during education to apply bookwork to hands-on experience. [12:01] - Hear how a local college's program with two externships enhanced students' practical knowledge and skills. [13:22] - Hands-on skills help students stay in the field, offering them more confidence. [16:04] - Josh loves training and creating roles to help employees professionally grow. [19:12] - A technician can really help organize surgeries, optimizing time and space. [20:31] - Hear how Josh supports employee growth by trusting them with making decisions. Steve Tangney qualified in 2008 and moved from his hometown of Cork to work in London. During a period of travelling, he met the love of his life – now his wife – on the Gold Coast, where he also worked for a while. While his time there was influential, it was his experience at Avenue Dental on the Sunshine Coast (Sunny Coast) that made the biggest impact on his professional outlook. The owner's focus on cultivating a superb team culture stood out to Steve as the secret to their success. In 2017, Steve seized the opportunity to purchase a dental practice in Batemans Bay, a short plane journey from Sydney. (It is well worth listening to this podcast to discover how this opportunity came about.) At the start of his venture in 2017, Steve's practice had just two chairs and a team of five. Fast forward to today, and he proudly owns three locations with a team of 36 dedicated professionals. Steve's expansion story is rooted in his commitment to fostering an environment where team members can truly flourish and grow. In this inspiring podcast, you'll learn about: Leadership and structure: Steve emphasises a flat organisational structure with no Practice Managers, which has resulted in high staff retention and remarkable employee satisfaction. Creating the right environment: Alongside his partner, Eoin, they have developed a workplace where people rarely leave, and even when they do, they often wish to return. Empowering team solutions: He has nurtured a culture where team members are empowered to solve the practice's challenges and issues independently. Cross-training benefits: Discover the advantages of cross-training and how it fosters a superb team spirit. Team bonding in Fiji: Steve and his team once travelled to Fiji for a team bonding experience, yielding lasting benefits for the practice. He reckons it was the best return on investment he ever made. Ongoing development: A strong focus on team training and continuous development is a cornerstone of their practice's ethos. This podcast is truly inspirational as you will discover Steve Tangney's remarkable journey and business philosophy. Listen below or via your favourite podcast player.

Nick O'Neill of Oriel Chambers outlines a modern approach for mental health in a traditional industry that is the legal sector. He explains that law is known for being a male dominated culture, attracting alpha characters. And that presents a challenge for addressing a very human need, particularly when you consider that many men of the generation that struggle to engage with mental health, are managers. Their perceptions and behaviours have a far-reaching impact.Add to that Nick's view that most lawyers hate being told what to do and the challenge of billable hours, and you will understand that this is a complex issue.Nick outlines how the Bar is addressing the layers of cultural complexity to break down barriers. He shares advice about the need to keep women out - a controversial but informed perspective. He explains the need to get more people on the bus by creating a commercial case. And Nick describes the impact of the Merseyside Men's Legal Wellbeing Group, discussing topics such as professional happiness, imposter syndrome and professional goals. We both detest tick boxes. This is about real life.Don't let Mental Health Awareness Week in May, Global Wellness Day tomorrow, and International Men's Health Week next week become token gestures. Instead, do something that impacts long term by creating engagement and momentum. How are YOU going about that?More about Nick:After a successful career as a litigation solicitor/partner at KLS Law, Nick O'Neill recognised his real passion for people / operational management. Following the completion of his MBA at Nottingham Trent University, Nick moved into full time legal practice management in 2010. Nick has managed at 3 private sector law firms and spent 5 years as the Legal Governance and Practice Manager at Wirral Borough Council. Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Bethany Fishbein, OD. Bethany joins me on the show live from Vision Expo East to talk about one of the most important relationships in an optometric practice: the relationship between the practice manager and the owner/OD. In this conversation, she talks about the evolution of the managerial role in the practice as the practice matures and grows, the characteristics of a valuable practice manager, the mistakes that both she and others have made when filling the practice manager role in the office, and the importance of the practice owner's vision for how they want the practice to function. She also shares how to think about creating a job description (and why you should use a templated job description as a starting point for creating your customized version) and how you can use an honest conversation with your practice manager to align expectations in your office...ultimately using that conversation as the launch point for future performance and goal reviews. During this episode my guest today is Emma Wall, Practice Manager at Mickleover Medical Centre. We take a deep dive into the challenges faced in leadership during remote and hybrid work environments, particularly focusing on emotions at work. Primary care is a hugely challenging setting from an emotion perspective. Patients are unwell and/or emotionally charged already, so their ability to regulate their emotions is inhibited. Those providing primary care are often over stretched. Those that are there to help the patients and those providing the care are then contending with regulating their own emotions as well as the emotions of all those around them. Our conversation touches on various aspects such as resilience, adaptability, communication strategies and understanding yourself better through tools like Myers-Briggs tests and Clifton's strengths finder. We discuss the importance of clear communication, setting expectations, engaging individuals before tasks, and being mindful of team dynamics. Emotional labour and emotion work are subjects we have covered in episodes 2, 25, 26 and 27 as well as the special edition of episode 37. This week on the Uncharted Veterinary Podcast, Stephanie Goss and her special guest co-host, Maria Pirita, CVPM dive into a discussion about how to navigate the tricky waters when you go from being friends and a part of the team to being their boss. In this case, the new practice manager is facing an even more uphill battle because they aren't quite sure that the practice owner has their back. The team sides with decisions the old practice manager would have made and if the practice owner doesn't wade in, this manager is left feeling like they have no friends AND no one respects them. Good thing Stephanie and Maria aren't afraid of swimming through the uncharted waters. Let's get into this. The most obvious path for career trajectory is into management. What I hope you learn from Vet Life Reimagined is that there are many ways to evolve your career in veterinary medicine, but is practice management the right step for YOU? Our guest, Cassie, is a licensed veterinary technician (LVT) who decided to take the step into being a veterinary practice manager at a busy mixed-animal practice in Washington State. Cass will discuss the challenges of moving from a vet tech peer to a veterinary leader. It can be lonely as a manager, but Cass will show the ways she has found support and a good work-life balance that fits her values including family values as she is a mother of two. In that path, she found an opportunity that allows her to help veterinary medicine differently and work from home part-time through working for Vet Snap, a digitally controlled drug log software that is making life much easier for veterinary practices. Cassie joined VetSnap in 2022 as their first customer success specialist. She brings 10 years of veterinary experience to the VetSnap team. Aside from her love of medicine, Cassie enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hiking, fishing, barrel racing, and doing anything outdoors.

This week on the Uncharted Podcast, practice management geek Stephanie Goss is joined by special guest, Amanda Schwarzwalder, CVPM, RVT, KPA CTP, VTS (Behavior). When Stephanie saw this letter in the mailbag, Amanda was the first person who came to mind to tackle this topic with. For over 20 years Amanda has worked as a veterinary technician in various capacities. Her interest in behavior led her to joining The Behavior Clinic in 2009. A nationally recognized speaker in veterinary behavior and Fear FreeTM Approved Speaker, Amanda enjoys teaching veterinary team members how to implement and develop behavior care as a team. As the Practice Manager, Amanda is often behind the scenes handling the day to day business of keeping TBC running, supporting our referring veterinarians, and working with the TBC team to assist our clients and their pets. With such a well-rounded resume, it makes perfect sense that Amanda has a whole alphabet soup behind her name. Stephanie and Amanda are taking on an email from our mailbag that came to us from a technician in training who is worried about their comfort level with animals. While this might seem strange to some people in veterinary medicine who are lovers of ALL creatures great and small, Amanda and Stephanie talk through the concerns from a practical, clinical and personal level because there is a lot to this seemingly simple concern. We're not brushing it off, let's get into this... LINKS Are you a practice owner or a practice manager? Never underestimate the impact of a powerful partnership and DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN US LIVE IN GREENVILLE... The Wright Brothers. Venus and Serena. Han Solo and Chewbacca. Okay, that last one was (far) far-fetched… but there's no denying that all of these rockstar duos made a lasting impression on us. They innovated, discovered, experimented, and explored the unknown, all to leave the world a bit better than they found it. Veterinary practice leaders can form powerful partnerships just like these. Collaboration in leadership might sound simple, but for any of you that do it on a regular basis, you know it can be anything but easy! Every partnership (like every veterinary practice) is unique and faces very specific challenges. To be successful, you must identify your strengths and weaknesses as individuals and as a pair. By working to further your skills within your respective role, then coming together to work collaboratively with your partner, you can quickly break problems down into manageable pieces and move forward as a team. This December, The Practice Leaders Summit is here to infuse the powerful veterinary partnership of practice owners and practice managers with renewed energy and understanding. You both want a strengthened foundation to guide the practice (or practices!) you lead so that it can continue on to future success. Join us!
