This week, The Sleepless Cinematic Podcast joins forces with Down the Yellow Brick Pod hosts Emily Kay Shrader and Tara Tagliaferro, two of the world's leading experts on all things Oz, to discuss one of the more bizarro films ever to be influenced by 1939's classic 'The Wizard of Oz' - the third and final installment of John Waters' trash trilogy, 1977's 'Desperate Living'.  Emily and Tara come to this film with plenty of Oz-related background, and weigh in on several of the homages that Waters seems to have snuck into this film: a demented "Over the Rainbow", dropped "houses", an "effed-up" Oz/Munchkinland, witches wreaking havoc, villains having a lot of fun, and much, much more!  Please check out our conversation with Emily and Tara on Down the Yellow Brick Pod about 2018's 'Crazy Rich Asians' and the Oz-related themes that its director John M. Chu, who's directing the theatrical release of 'Wicked', managed to knowingly or unknowingly incorporate.   If you like what you heard, please follow us and rate/review this podcast favorably on your platform of choice.  It really does help us find new listeners!Follow us on IG and Tik Tok @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd?  Follow Julian at julian_barthold and Madeline at patronessofcats.

On the heels of DESPERATE LIVING — and its disappointing box office — John Waters knew that he needed a hit, and that he needed his leading lady back. Once again teaming with Divine, Waters set out to make a film that was a little more palatable to mass audiences, one that wouldn't rely on shock value to get its laughs. The resulting film was POLYESTER, released in 1981. Co-starring 50s silver screen heartthrob Tab Hunter, the film would also utilize the infamous "Odorama" scratch-n-sniff card gimmick during its initial release. In this episode, we'll discuss just how Waters went from the subversive, abrasive DESPERATE LIVING to the Douglas Sirk-esque melodrama of POLYESTER, how he got Tab Hunter (and Debbie Harry!) involved, and how the film was received by audiences at the time.  Theme Song: "There's Still a Little Bit of Time, If We Hurry and I Mean Hurry" by Slasher Film Festival Strategy. After FEMALE TROUBLE, Divine — John Waters' muse — found his off-screen career beginning to flourish. When it was time for Waters to make his follow up to that film, that meant that Divine was unavailable, due to prior commitments. So for the first time in his career, Waters set out to make a film without his regular leading lady in the lead role. The resulting film, DESPERATE LIVING, is Waters' most ambitious from this time period and is considered the final act in his so called Trash Trilogy. Unfortunately, possibly due to its lack of Divine, the film doesn't seem to garner the same amount of love as many of Waters' other early films, and was a box office disappointment, even by underground movie standards. In this episode, we'll discuss in detail how DESPERATE LIVING came to be, the (many) trials and tribulations that its cast and crew endured during film, how cult icon Liz Renay became involved, and what critics and audiences of the time thought of it. Plus, we'll discuss our own thoughts on the film, its legacy, and its relation to Waters' career as we continue our deep dive into Waters' early films. The film was made by British studio Hammer Film Productions and was their third adaptation of the story after The Ugly Duckling and The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll.[citation needed] The film is notable for showing Jekyll transform into a female Hyde; it also incorporates into the plot aspects of the historical Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare cases.[1] The title characters were played by the film's stars, Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick."Along the way: Female Trouble, Myra Breckenridge, Desperate Living, Pink Flamingos, Elizabeth Coffey on Midnight Mass, the new Arrow boxset Gothic Fantastico, Hatchet for the Honeymoon, The Night Evelyn Came from the Grave, White Lotus, School of Rock, Enlightenment, Chucky, Smile, and more!NEXT WEEK: Hereditary with special guest Chrisitan TucciWebsite: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkelal

You may know John Waters as the goofy, pencil-moustached TV personality, or from his mainstream successes like Hairspray or Cry-Baby. But his unlikely career started with some of the most transgressive and outright repulsive cult films of the 1970s, including one of the most Unwatchable© films we've yet tackled. Waters superfan Robin Guiler joins us for an appropriately rowdy episode about the first and last films in the director's “Trash Trilogy”: 1972's truly disgusting midnight movie Pink Flamingos and 1977's filthy Wizard of Oz riff Desperate Living. 2021.

PsychotroniCast concludes it’s 70’s John Waters Series with 1977’s Desperate Living. Dreamlander Mink Stole plays Peggy Gravel, a psychotic house wife who, with the help of her maid, Grizelda Brown (Played by Jean Hill) murder her husband and embark on a journey to their new lives that await them in Mortville. John Waters really lets his freak flag fly with Mortville. An off the grid society populated by homeless burnouts who are ruled by a fascist queen named Carlotta, played by Dreamlander Edith Massey whose leather daddy gestapo rule with an iron fist!Sadly, with the death of David Lochary prior to the production of Desperate Living, plus the absence of Devine due to scheduling conflicts, Waters casts Liz Renay and Susan Lowe to provide the filth. Their valiant effort does not go unnoticed, but the absence of the two most important Dreamlanders is felt.

Horror movies don’t always have to scare you senseless or be overflowing with blood. When you’re a legendary director like John Waters, horror could certainly mean violence, but it can also be the horrid human behavior capitalizing on said violence or the suppressed psycho living under your same roof. Serial Mom (1994) is a perfect satire about a murderous mother’s influence on pop culture and how society views these unbelievable, “true” crime events. ▶️ When an ideal, all-American mom played by Kathleen Turner starts defending her family from life’s annoyances, the bodies begin to mount up. Waters’ film pokes a hole in what people think of as a “normal” family, and makes us think about our own exposure to media. With an uncommon female lead, how does Serial Mom fit in with other serial killer films? Is it possible Serial Mom is even more relavent nowadays? We deconstruct the themes behind the film, and also relive some of favorite scenes that never get old. The brilliant cast of the movie and Waters’ intended vision for the film are discussed, as well as hitting on his supremely influential career, in general. ▶️ Justin and Lindsay stick with two Waters-related movies for their Picks of the Week. The writer/director had always, and famously, teamed up with the amazingly over the top, cross-dressing actor known as Divine. The two made some of Waters’ most memorable films together. But for this Pick, Justin went with Lust in the Dust, one of very few films not written or directed by Waters, but that starred Divine. Lindsay takes the opportunity to talk about her favorite Waters film, Desperate Living— a film so trashy and filled to the brim with filth, it makes you want to shower after watching it. ▶️ If you didn’t think there was a way to connect Billy Murray to John Waters, you’re sorely mistaken. We take you behind the scenes of the Waters and Divine classic, Polyester (1981), and reveal the Murraymoment that has been hiding in plain sight. ▶️ The genre-blending Serial Mom may not frighten you to the core, but the performances and deeper understanding of the film may chill your bones on another level. Episode 14 is a truly fun film — laughing through the horror is highly advised.

Peaches Christ, AKA Joshua Grannell, has mentored a whole generation of San Francisco drag performers, including the fantastically-tattooed Veruca Bathsalts, AKA Seth Shubin. In this third installment of Meet the MAYtriarchy, we talk to them both about the fellowship of performance, keeping drag transgressive, and how their creative contributions are part of a much bigger cultural movement and legacy. Joshua Grannell is a filmmaker best known as his alter-ego “Peaches Christ”, an underground drag superstar and cult movie impresario. Joshua is the writer and director of the feature film All About Evil. The award-winning dark comedy gore film stars Natasha Lyonne, Thomas Dekker, Cassandra Peterson, Mink Stole, and Peaches Christ herself. Joshua’s infamous cult-movie parody events are produced by his company Peaches Christ Productions at the Castro Theatre and regularly draw over 2,000 attendees to each new show before touring the West Coast. Other Peaches hosted events have featured special guest stars John Waters, Cloris Leachman, Appolonia, Barry Bostwick, Pam Grier, and more. Peaches Christ has been featured in the films Milk, I Am Divine, Diary Of A Teenage Girl, Mansfield 66/67, and on HBO’s Looking. In 2018, Joshua created a new company called "Into The Dark" that will produce immersive theatrical haunted shows in the Bay Area written & directed by him. The first show,Terror Vault, is happening at The San Francisco Mint in October. Seth Shubin, the self-proclaimed "Jerk of all trades" (also known as his sometimes alter ego "Veruca Bathsalts") is a nanny and costume designer for Peaches Christ Productions by day, bartender, drag queen and event producer by night. Originally hailing from Philadelphia he moved to the bay in 2013 to live out the San Francisco hustle, pursuing all his hopes and dreams. Seth throws the widely popular queer punk night "Desperate Living” every first Friday of the month at The Stud as well as the bi-monthly over the top film series “Film School Drop Outs” at The Roxie Theater. We all have our guilty pleasures.  I have admired John Waters as a filmmaker since I first read about him in the pages of Fangoria magazine back in 1982.  I love a maverick filmmaker who can manage to make movies outside of the system on a shoestring budget that are original, unique, and fun.  The early films of John Waters fit all of those descriptions.  Some horror tries to gross you out, but few do better than Waters in those early films.  The influence of Herschel Gordon Lewis, William Castle, Warhol,The Kuchar Brothers, and even Russ Meyer are present in Waters’ movies, and I love talking about him and his films.  John Waters does bad taste well.
