Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's chat with re-issue genius Bob Irwin. Bob and his wife Mary started the Sundazed Music label in 1989. The first Sundazed releases were The Great Lost Knickerbockers Album! by The Knickerbockers and Western Union by The Five Americans, and reflected Irwin's personal preference for garage rock and surf music. His skill at restoring old vinyl records for the (then new) CD format attracted the attention of major labels, who increasingly solicited him to help them re-issue material from their back catalogs. He also helped Sony Music release their archival Legacy Records label. Later, his restoration work included early material by the likes of Bob Dylan, Nancy Sinatra, & The Byrds. In this episode, Bob discusses his relationship with Pet Sounds, its standing in the pantheon no matter how many times you've heard it, its importance and influence on music in general, and the wonders of a technology with inherent, imposed limitations. There'll be a short sneak peak running publicly for free, but the entirety of this podcast will only be accessible on the Major Tier of Discograffiti's Patreon. In Berkeley Talks episode 225, The Atlantic journalists Yoni Appelbaum and Jerusalem Demsas discuss the decline of housing mobility in the United States and its impact on economic opportunity in the country. Appelbaum, author of the 2025 book Stuck: How the Privileged and the Propertied Broke the Engine of American Opportunity, began by tracing the history of housing mobility in the U.S. and its rapid decline in recent decades. He noted that in the 19th century, one out of three Americans moved to a new residence every year, and as late as 1970, one in five did. Today, only one in 13 people in the U.S. pack up their things and find a new place to live on an annual basis. “These constant moves in America, made possible by the constant construction of new housing, created a new kind of social order,” said Appelbaum, and most people “ended up better off for it.” The sharp decline in residential relocation, he said, caused largely by rising housing costs and restrictive zoning, is a major driver of the decline of social mobility, “the largest and least remarked change in America of the last 50 years.” Building on Appelbaum's argument, Demsas said that exclusionary housing policies have shifted mobility from a widespread opportunity to a privilege for the affluent and well-educated. “Most Americans no longer stand to gain by moving toward the places in this country that offer them the greatest opportunities — the greatest professional opportunities, the best education for their children,” said Demsas, author of the 2024 book On the Housing Crisis: Land, Development, Democracy. Instead, they move toward affordability, she said, which deepens inequality and limits their potential for economic advancement. The conversation, held in March 2025, was moderated by Paul Pierson, a UC Berkeley professor of political science and director of the Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative (BESI). The event was co-sponsored by BESI and the Berkeley Center for American Democracy.Watch a video of the conversation and read more about the speakers.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Photo by Daniel Abadia/Unsplash+ Hosted on Acast. Cap'n David Waldman, at the helm of the Good Ship KITM, sails us safely through another “Talk Like a Pirate Day” … uhm, “Yar”? (For our Canadian listeners, that's “Yar, eh?”) Special Tuesday guest Joan McCarter isn't feeling nautical today but can suggest a few members of Congress to keelhaul. Republicans in DC have not been quite “arrayed” as of late. Republicans who always wanted to burn it down are using their fellow Republicans as kindling. The House are kneecapping the Senate, but so is Senator Ron Johnson. Matt Gaetz has turned against Kevin McCarthy, but pretty much everybody is turning against Matt Gaetz. The Biden impeachment inquiry might at least shut down with the government if they all didn't mind abusing their staff. Clarence Thomas' graft scandal raises the question of why SCOTUS justices have the time to take 38 vacations. Catholic fundamentalist tycoon Leonard Leo is working the judges from federal to state level to choke out voting rights. Donald Trump has been in court for about 60 years and is 77 years old. What does a warning about crossing the line into lifelong legal jeopardy actually mean to him? That's why he wrote to-do lists for lackies on classified documents. Using them as toilet paper wasn't getting his point across. Donald reminded aides that they “don't know anything about boxes”. Trump is right, in that not many know everything about all of the boxes. Rudy Colludy Giuliani's ex-lawyers sue him for $1.4 million that they say he owes. Rudy could use a little of that money Trump raised for him... Too bad it all went to Bedminster overhead costs, huh? Canada isn't worried so much about pirates anymore. Now it's the Sikh Khalistan movement which has been an Indian problem but is turning into a Canadian crisis. Five Americans are back on US soil after release from Iranian detention, which would normally be seen as great news, if it wasn't for the way abnormal people see things.

President Joe Biden is set to push for more aid to Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly on Sept. 19. And Ukrainian President Zelenskyy will visit the White House after his first in-person summit appearance since the war with Russia began. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is facing hardliners in his own party as he tries to thrash out a deal to avoid a government shutdown. That's after unilaterally launching an impeachment probe into President Biden. Five Americans detained in Iran have finally tasted freedom. Senior officials from both the Biden administration and Qatar confirmed the U.S. citizens were aboard a flight departing Tehran earlier today. The Americans are on their way to Doha on a Qatari government jet accompanied by two relatives and the Qatari ambassador to Iran. This move comes as part of a wider agreement that saw the U.S. unfreeze $6 billion in Iranian assets -- money to be used strictly for humanitarian purposes and monitored by the U.S. Treasury Department. The high-stakes deal was achieved through complex, indirect negotiations facilitated by countries like Qatar and Switzerland acting as mediators between the U.S. and Iran. Despite this momentous release, the administration reaffirmed that U.S.-Iran relations remain tense and announced new sanctions against Tehran's Ministry of Intelligence. Iran has conducted a cold-blooded hostage policy that they have been mastering since the Islamic regime took power in 1979, with the kidnapping of the American diplomats from the embassy in Tehran. Iran's long history of kidnapping Western hostages in exchange for all sorts of concessions has impacted people from the United States, various European countries, Australia and other countries around the world. FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Behnam Ben Taleblu, Senior Fellow at the non-partisan Foundation for Defense of Democracies, about this latest exchange and how kidnapping foreigners has become seemingly successful for Iran. Galatians 5:19-2419 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, 20 idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who [h]belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Psalm 37:12-20The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them;13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bowto bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright.15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken.16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked;17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous.18 The blameless spend their days under the Lord's care, and their inheritance will endure forever.19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.20 But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.Episode 1,024 LinksThis is an actual line from the Georgia indictment. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Friday that he was appointing a special counsel to further the investigation into Hunter Biden; however, who he chose to lead the charge left many raising eyebrows. David Weiss, a principal figure in the Hunter Biden case, will be conducting the probe, though due to his past involvement in the investigation and the role he played in negotiating Hunter's "sweetheart" plea deal, many Republicans have criticized this move. Attorney Sol Wisenberg, who served as former Deputy Independent Counsel in the Whitewater and President Clinton investigations, joins the Rundown to discuss why he does not support Weiss leading the special counsel due to his previous actions in the investigation, the likelihood of Hunter Biden facing an indictment, and why President Biden himself could also face special counsel in the future. Five Americans in custody in Iran may soon have a chance at freedom, as the United States is negotiating a tentative deal for their release, but it is not without its drawbacks. In return, Iran wants the U.S. to approve the release of nearly $6 billion in assets frozen by American sanctions. Additionally, Iran would receive some Iranians imprisoned in America as well. This deal would come at a time in which many national security experts in the nation are wary of Iran's ambitions for nuclear power, and some warn that approving the unfreezing of assets would be akin to paying ransom to Tehran. FOX News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin has spoken to the families of those imprisoned and government sources who are negotiating for these Americans' freedom. She joins the podcast to break down the terms of the deal and the dangerous precedent it may set. Plus, commentary by Fox Nation host Tammy Bruce. Learn more about your ad choices.
