This Day in Legal History: The United Nations Security Council Convenes its First MeetingOn January 17, 1946, the United Nations Security Council convened for its inaugural meeting, marking a crucial moment in international law and governance. This event symbolized the global commitment to peace and security following the devastations of World War II. The meeting, held at Church House, Westminster, London, brought together representatives from 11 nations, reflecting the diverse political landscapes of that era.The council's establishment under the United Nations Charter represented a new approach to international conflict resolution and legal diplomacy. Unlike its predecessor, the League of Nations, the Security Council was endowed with the authority to make binding decisions. This feature underscored a collective endeavor towards maintaining international peace and stability.Discussions at this first meeting set the tone for future operations, emphasizing cooperation and legal frameworks to address global challenges. The Security Council's ability to impose sanctions, authorize military interventions, and make legally binding decisions was a novel development in international law. It signaled a shift from purely diplomatic negotiations to actionable, enforceable resolutions.Importantly, the Security Council's first session underscored the principles of sovereign equality and non-intervention, foundational elements in modern international law. It highlighted the role of international cooperation in addressing conflicts, a principle that continues to influence global legal practices and policies. This historic meeting laid the groundwork for numerous legal precedents and interventions in the years to follow. It showcased the potential of international law as a tool for peace and justice, shaping the landscape of global governance in the 20th century and beyond.California's leading role in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry is being challenged by new initiatives in New York and New Jersey. These states, under their respective governors, are positioning themselves as emerging centers for AI. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a partnership with state universities and a $250 million investment over ten years to create a super-computer facility in upstate New York. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has aligned with Princeton University and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority for a similar AI endeavor. Both governors are focused on enhancing research capabilities to attract more AI firms and jobs. New York is already home to companies like IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, while New Jersey hosts Panasonic Corp.'s North American headquarters and a major IBM facility. In contrast, California hosts many of the largest AI companies, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta, as well as major research centers like UC Berkeley and Stanford University.California Governor Gavin Newsom is determined to maintain California's AI dominance, promoting a hands-off approach to AI regulation in the private sector, while ensuring state agencies effectively control AI systems. Other governors are adopting similar administrative strategies, avoiding sweeping regulations that could hinder AI development. These approaches echo federal AI rules introduced by President Joe Biden, allowing government use of AI with monitoring of its impacts.New York and New Jersey have avoided imposing broad restrictions on AI, focusing instead on facilitating its growth and mitigating potential risks. Their budget processes and collaborations with academic institutions will shape the scope of these AI initiatives. New York Assemblymember Alex Bores highlighted the importance of computing power as a key factor in attracting tech talent and industry growth, aiming to rival California's AI dominance.Elected officials in other states also express a desire to diversify the AI landscape beyond Silicon Valley. Efforts are underway to ensure wider participation in AI development and to address concerns such as algorithmic discrimination, job losses, surveillance, and misinformation. This national interest in AI underlines its potential to reshape the economy and influence a variety of sectors.California Tech Dominance Challenged By AI Initiatives in NY, NJApple Inc. is adjusting its US App Store policies to include external payment options, following the Supreme Court's decision not to hear its appeal in an antitrust lawsuit. This change will allow third-party apps to use links directing to external websites for processing in-app purchases, thereby bypassing Apple's own payment system which typically charges a 15% to 30% commission. However, Apple intends to collect a revised revenue share of 12% or 27% from developers opting for external payment systems. The Supreme Court's choice left in place a 2023 appeals court ruling, which found Apple's business model compliant with antitrust laws but in violation of California's Unfair Competition Law due to restrictions on developers' communication about alternative, potentially cheaper, payment systems. The decision comes amidst the legal battle between Apple and Epic Games, with both companies having sought the court's review. The ruling impacted Apple's stock, which experienced a temporary decline.Developers will now need to apply for an "entitlement" to access external payment options. Apple had previously allowed reader apps to direct users to external websites for subscriptions. The company will issue a warning to customers about external transactions before proceeding.Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney criticized Apple's plan to charge a fee on external transactions, arguing it would prevent developers from offering lower costs to consumers. Sweeney also disapproved of Apple's warning message to customers, calling it a "scare screen," and plans to challenge Apple's compliance approach in court. The stakes are high, with in-app spending projected to reach $182 billion in 2024 and $207 billion by 2025. Competitors like Microsoft Corp. are already considering entering the mobile app market, with a focus on gaming. The decision aligns with previous court findings largely rejecting claims by Epic that Apple's App Store policies violated federal antitrust law, while acknowledging some issues with its business practices. This ruling also concludes the temporary stay in the case, allowing Apple to proceed with its new policy. The case is one among several global challenges Apple faces, including pending antitrust cases in Europe against its App Store rules.Apple to Allow Outside Payments for Apps After US Decision (4)Coinbase, a major cryptocurrency exchange, is set to argue in federal court that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) should not regulate the tokens traded on its platform as securities. This hearing marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between Coinbase and the SEC, which could have major implications for the digital asset sector. The SEC's lawsuit against Coinbase, filed in June, claims the exchange facilitated trading in at least 13 crypto tokens that should have been registered as securities. The agency also targeted Coinbase's "staking" program, asserting it should have been registered. Coinbase has requested the dismissal of the lawsuit, referencing a separate case where a judge ruled in favor of Ripple Labs, while the SEC cites another case to support its stance.Coinbase, SEC set to face off in federal court over regulator's crypto authority | ReutersThe U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a case that could significantly impact the regulatory powers of federal agencies, centered on a dispute over a government program monitoring overfishing of herring off New England's coast. Two fishing companies, Loper Bright Enterprises and Relentless Inc, are challenging the National Marine Fisheries Service's requirement for commercial fishermen to help fund this program. This case presents an opportunity for the Court's conservative majority to reconsider the 1984 "Chevron deference," a legal doctrine that directs judges to defer to federal agencies' interpretations of ambiguous U.S. laws. If you have any interest in Chevron deference and learning a bit more about what might be at stake, see our Max Min episode on the topic. The Supreme Court case, seen as part of a broader effort to limit federal bureaucratic power, involves the cost of monitoring fishing activities, with implications for other cases concerning agency authority, including those involving the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Decisions in these cases are expected by the end of June.Supreme Court may reel in US agency powers in fishing dispute | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe
Show #1459 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Sunday 8th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. ELECTRIC VW ID BUZZ STARTS AT 65,000 EUROS "The updated list of eligible electric vehicles published by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (Bafa) reveals something that VW only wanted to tell us at the start of sales: the price of the ID Buzz." "Bafa, which is responsible for promoting e-cars, gives the first ID Buzz Pro model available for sale with a net price of 54,270 euros. Plus the statutory sales tax, the Bully successor is around 64,580 euros and thus well above the 40,000 euro limit for the higher subsidy. The purchase bonus for the ID Buzz this year is still 7,500 euros, of which 2,500 euros from the manufacturer, so that customers have to spend around 57,080 euros on balance." "For the commercial offshoot, the ID Buzz Cargo, interested parties have to budget 45,740 euros net. With a premium, they come to a net purchase price of 38,240 euros. They get the sales tax back from the tax office anyway." Footage is shown of a hand scrolling on a smartphone with the commentary, “Right now it could seem like the only people who matter are the loudest….” Who could they be thinking of? - Then, it continues— “Those who want to tear things down and then fly away on their personal spaceships when things get hard,” A video of a rocket taking lift off fills the screen. - The rest of the ad is dedicated to profiling the workers of Ford, profiling a culturally and gender diverse cohort of people working by their first name. The narrator says that Ford assembles more vehicles in the US than other car manufacturers, which means local jobs. - The narrator continues: “… we've got 182,000 people, and they're building.” and goes on further to conclude, “you might not know their names, but these people get up every day to move us all forward.” Original Source : https://thenextweb.com/news/ford-snarks-elon-musk-and-celebrates-their-workers HOT VOLKSWAGEN ID.3 GTX TO JOIN RANGE IN 2023 - Volkswagen has been tipped to spice up its ID.3 EV with a performance version that will become the brand's first all-electric hot hatchback. And now, we know when it'll arrive. - Speaking at the launch of the new ID.5 SUV in Austria, Volkswagen product line spokesperson Martin Hube noted that the ID.3 GTX's entry to the range will coincide with the ID.3's mid-life facelift. “Of course the project is progressing,” he said, adding, “[For the] ID.3 facelift…we will get some very interesting details and of course, we are convinced that customer's expectations for a bit more power, for all-wheel drive is there, and [the] customer's wish is what we have to fulfil.” - This means the ID.3 GTX won't be launched this year - we're not expecting a facelifted ID.3 until 2023 at the earliest. - likely that the ID.3 GTX will use the same twin-motor powertrain as the ID.4 GTX, producing 295bhp. In the smaller, lighter ID.3, the GTX will likely undercut the ID.4 GTX's 6.2-second 0-62mph time. · Original Source : https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/id3/355043/hot-volkswagen-id3-gtx-join-range-2023 TESLA OPENS MORE SUPERCHARGERS TO OTHERS - In Norway, Tesla has opened more Superchargers for other brands. To achieve the sales target, at least two new electric models are to be introduced each year. - Kia assumes – based on 160,000 BEV sales this year – that it will already sell 807,000 BEVs in 2026 and then 1.2 million battery-electric cars in 2030. - With the 1.87 million electric cars Hyundai is targeting, according to its strategy update unveiled the day before, Hyundai-Kia would have sales of more than three million electric cars in 2030. - While Hyundai has announced further development of its current EV platform E-GMP for 2025, Kia does not mention this Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA). Hyundai plans to rely not only on standardized e-motors and chassis designs, but also on batteries with cell-to-pack technology from CATL, which does not require modules. In its announcement, Kia refers to everything from the upcoming EV9 – the large E-SUV is still based on the current E-GMP. - Kia announces production of “small and mid-sized electric vehicles” in Europe starting in 2025 – this will likely be located at the Zilina plant in Slovakia Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/03/kia-aims-to-sell-1-2-million-bevs-in-2030/ KIA AUTOMODE TO LAUNCH IN 2023, COMING TO EV9 SUV FIRST - Korean car manufacturer Kia is to launch an autonomous driving mode for select vehicles from 2023 on. - AutoMode uses a range of proprietary autonomous driving technologies, which include Highway Driving Pilot to enable driver-less travel on motorways and highways. It will feature first in next year's Kia EV9 SUV and, by 2026, will be available in all new models launched in major markets. - AutoMode will receive regular over-the-air updates as new features are developed. This involves turning the Group's largest engineering unit with 11,500 employees into a pace-setter for the Volkswagen brand's transformation into a technology company. - The main emphasis is on a complete redesign of the development process, making it interdisciplinary, focused squarely on software, customer requirements and SSP, Volkswagen's electric platform of the future, and centered on functions rather than individual components. - This is expected to cut development time by about a quarter, increase the speed of new software releases and also significantly accelerate manufacturing processes in production. - In the 1990s, vehicle development centered primarily on components. As functions and electronics were added in the early 2000s, connectivity began to play an increasingly important role. The 39-year-old faces a maximum 25-year prison term if convicted of the top securities-fraud charge. - Mr. Milton pleaded not guilty to the charges in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday and was released on $100 million bond. - Prosecutors said some of Mr. Milton's claims were false and from November 2019 to September 2020, amounted to a scheme to defraud individual, nonprofessional investors. Mr. Milton's scheme was motivated by wealth and fame, prosecutors said. As Nikola's stock price went up, Mr. Milton's shares were once worth at least $8.5 billion - To create one video detailed in the indictment, Mr. Milton directed a Nikola employee to use footage of a Nikola One—which wasn't safe and had no batteries—rolling down a hill, prosecutors said. In the video, which appeared on social media, the truck appears to be driving without an incline, according to the indictment. GERMAN REGION TO FINE TESLA FOR ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION - A German regional authority said it was preparing to fine Tesla for illegal building activity on the site of its planned new car factory near Berlin. The environment ministry for Brandenburg, the state that surrounds Berlin and in which the factory will be located, had found that Tesla had constructed tanks on the territory for which it had no authorisation, wrote Tagesspiegel newspaper, which first reported the fine. The company was banned from using the tanks it had already built, the newspaper added. The European Commission said that the carmakers had “breached EU antitrust rules by colluding on technical development in the area of nitrogen oxide cleaning”. - Volkswagen, the world's largest manufacturer of cars, will pay €502m, a reduction of more than half the original fine because it cooperated with the investigation. BMW will pay €372m - Daimler escaped without a fine because it had revealed the cartel to the commission. - Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen, plus VW's Audi and Porsche brands, exchanged information on AdBlue tank sizes, meaning they did not have to worry about competing with each other on having cleaner engines, the commission said. In the case of battery packs, things were different, as vehicle manufacturers right from the start tried to build their own packs, or even modules. We can see foreign packs basically only in imported cars. Over the last three years, the share of domestically produced packs amounted 87%. The motor is also now liquid cooled, rather than oil cooled, which Energica says delivers more consistent performance as well a subtle improvement to the handling. Interestingly Energica say that they brought the introduction of the EMCE motor forward because of pandemic-related supply chain issues, having completed development work in just six months. - The result is that the motor will now be standard fitment on all Energicas currently in production Original Source : https://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2021/july/energica-emce-electric-motor/ USED TESLA CARS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN BRAND NEW ONES - A global shortage of microchips since last year has forced automakers to cut back on new car production, therefore causing prices of used cars to surge to a point where some popular models are fetching higher prices on second-hand markets than their brand new counterparts. - A lightly used Tesla Model 3 sedan, for example, now costs an average $1,300, or 2.9 percent, more than the brand new version sold on Tesla website - Avoiding a seven- to 11-week wait is the main motivator for people to pay a little extra on a second-hand Tesla. According to the Chinese automaker, home chargers and superchargers will be officially available to Norwegian customers beginning in September, while the first rollout of four battery swap stations will become available before year's end. - In a report from CnEVPost, the first superchargers and battery swap stations from NIO have begun their journey overseas to Norway. While the superchargers and home charging ports should be available to Norwegians as early as September, the battery swap stations will take a bit longer to implement. NIO has previously explained that these swap stations have been specifically adapted to meet local climate regulations in Norway. Furthermore, NIO has already worked with the Scandinavian country to ensure its incoming battery swap stations are certified to meet the requirements for electrical and mechanical safety, structural load-bearing, and fire ratings in Norway. The Japanese company this year established a test line in Japan to make a new battery cell that Tesla says will halve battery costs and help with a ramp-up in battery production. Panasonic Corp., which owns a battery factory with Tesla Inc., sold its entire stake in the electric vehicle maker for approximately 400 billion yen ($3.6 billion). The company owned $730 million in Tesla stock in March of last year, and that stake had been reduced to zero by the end of March this year. Panasonic, led by new President and CEO Yuki Kusumi, has embarked on a two-year mission to produce more batteries for Tesla while freeing up billions of dollars to invest in new areas of growth by becoming more efficient.

TESLA MODELS S & X GET PRICIER IN EUROPE "Tesla has increased prices significantly for the next European batch of Model S and Model X vehicles. It is sparking rumors of a refresh." says electrek: "Tesla owners across Europe are reporting that the automaker updated its online configurator with an important price increase across the board. Model 3 is seeing a smaller price increase between €500 to €1,000, but Model S and Model X are seeing much larger price increases. Prices vary in different markets, but the price of both vehicles is roughly €5,000 ($6,000 USD) more expensive after the update. In Germany, the Model S now starts about €82,000 or the equivalent of $98,000 USD." These are cars arriving March 2021. Could it be 4680 cells from pilot line? Surely not. But the numbers of sales of S & X are small enough. 17,000 combined in Q3 produced. 1,700,000kWH of cells. That's 1.7GWh of batteries a quarter. Pilot line will run 10GWh but be used to make Model Y in Berlin. So, unlikely. Plus long term battery supply contracts with Panasonic for the 18650 cells. More likely a cosmetic refresh to bring in line some of the supply chains and commonality of parts used across the range. And I'd love to see them more premium. https://electrek.co/2020/11/25/tesla-increases-prices-next-eu-batch-model-s-x-sparking-refresh-rumors/ REUTERS EXCLUSIVE: LG CHEM TO DOUBLE CHINA BATTERY CAPACITY "South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd plans to more than double production capacity of battery cells it makes in China for Tesla Inc electric vehicles (EV) next year, sources said, to keep up with its U.S. client’s growth in the biggest car market." reports Reuters: "The firm, a supplier for Tesla’s Shanghai-built Model 3, will also ship its increased output from China as well as Korea to Tesla’s factories in Germany and the United States, said two people with knowledge of the matter, signalling an increased role in the supply chain of the world’s leading EV manufacturer. The plan comes as Tesla, LG Chem’s primary customer, scrambles to secure cells as part of an aggressive global production expansion plan, as it targets soaring demand fanned by governments promoting EVs to curb air pollution. LG Chem has already added production lines in South Korea this year mainly to meet demand from Tesla’s U.S. plant, the people said. Moreover, the automaker has asked Japan’s Panasonic Corp - which supplies the U.S. plant" Annual capacity could be running at 250,000 Model Y a year by the end of 2021. This new production from LG, and their 17 production lines in Nanjing, could make enough cells for 323,000 MOdel Y's. BERLIN MODEL Y MIGHT NOT BE ONLY 4680 CELLS. From the same report: "LG Chem’s China factory will also initially supply battery cells for Tesla vehicles in Berlin when production there begins, the person said. The automaker needs permission should it want to make its own cells locally." TESLA SUPERCHARGER NETWORK COULD BE OPENED TO OTHER EV BRANDS IN CHINA "Tesla China VP Grace Tao recently shared a rather interesting update on the electric car maker’s Supercharger ramp in the country. While speaking at an online forum, the executive remarked that Tesla China is open to the idea of opening up its Supercharger Network to other electric car makers in the country" according to Teslarati:"If Tesla opens its Supercharger Network to other carmakers in China, Tao noted that the non-Tesla EVs would have to be certified first. She did not announce a timeframe for such a project, though her remarks do come on the heels of an announcement about a Supercharger plant in the country. Over the next several years, Ford expects to deliver more than 600,000 examples of the car, which will “combine generous space with the advantages of an electric drive,” according to the company. In fact, there may be a second MEB based vehicle in the works. A report by Handelsblatt from last year quoted Stuart Rowley, head of Ford Europe as saying, “Yes, we are talking about it.” From an economic point of view, he said, it would not make sense to produce just one car on the MEB chassis." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/11/30/ford-to-convert-cologne-factory-for-meb-based-ev-production/ You can listen to all 940 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. 21st November is the 12 month anniversary of smash-gate! LG CHEM BATTERIES FOR CHINESE MODEL Y "South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd. will supply batteries to US electric vehicle giant Tesla Inc. for its latest mid-size SUV Model Y, to be manufactured in China next year. LG Chem, the world’s largest EV battery maker, has been chosen as the sole supplier for the luxury SUV model, beating strong contenders such as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) and Japan’s Panasonic Corp., according to industry sources on Nov. 20." says The Korea Economic Daily: "Under the latest deal, LG Chem will supply advanced lithium-ion batteries, known as NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) batteries, for the Model Y to be produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory Shanghai facility in the first quarter of 2021, sources said. CATL, China’s leading battery maker, had been tipped as one of the strongest candidates, but was excluded as a supplier as it focuses on a different, low-cost type of battery, known as LFP (cobalt-free lithium-iron-phosphate). Currently, Tesla uses CATL-made LFP cells for its low-end made-in-China Model 3 sedans, while outsourcing batteries from LG Chem for high-end Model 3 vehicles, also made in China." 2021 could see 360,000 Model Y's produced. 30,000 a month? Well this year LG Chem will have around 100GWh of capacity, which they're planning on being 260GWh by 2023. https://www.kedglobal.com/newsView/ked202011200008 RIVIAN CEO EYES SMALLER EVS FOR CHINA & EUROPE "Rivian, which is backed by Amazon and Ford, on Wednesday said it plans to follow up its first two products, a full-size pickup and SUV, with smaller models targeted at China and Europe where it may eventually build some vehicles. While Rivian plans to begin selling the SUV in Europe in 2022 and China soon after, "what will really drive volume in those markets is the follow-on products" that are smaller and tailored for overseas customers, Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe told Reuters." reports Automotive News Europe: "The company's first plant in Normal, Ilinois, has begun pilot production ahead of next year's launch of three models -- the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, which Scaringe described as "halo products" for Rivian, and a large electric delivery van for Amazon. Scaringe said Rivian has begun setting up service centers and will deploy mobile units to handle maintenance and repair work on Amazon's vans, as well as Rivian vehicles for retail customers." Scaringe said: "To really scale in those markets as we bring on follow-on products, having a production footprint outside the U.S. is going to be important. That's a ways off. We wouldn't be serious about building a car company if we weren't thinking about China and Europe as important markets long term." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/rivian-ceo-eyes-smaller-evs-china-europe GM WILL LAUNCH 30 EVS AROUND THE WORLD BY 2025 "General Motors is leaving no room for doubt as to whether or not it’s dedicated to electrification: the Detroit-based automaker announced today at a conference hosted by British bank Barclays that it is increasing its investment in electric and autonomous technology by $7 billion and will have 30 EVs on the market by 2025. That brings GM’s total EV and autonomous tech investment through 2025 to $27 billion as the automaker moves toward a full-electric lineup." writes Car & Driver: "This increase in planned electric vehicles—up from the 20 slated to hit the market by 2023—GM said, is made possible by the flexible Ultium platform which can be adapted to a variety of different vehicles. That platform can also now give vehicles a range of up to 450 miles, up from the 400 miles which GM claimed at an “EV Day” back in March. Alongside the scaling of EV production, GM expects that the cost of its Ultium batteries will drop by 60 percent by the middle of this decade, bringing the batteries “closer to cost parity with gas-powered engines.”" Cadillac will have the Lyriq which has been moved up by 9 months, Celestiq, GMC's Hummer truck and SUV, new Chevrolet the new Bolt EUV. Interesting fact about the Hummer EV, that will have a development of 26 months down from the usual 50. That means the Chevy Pickup will be moved up 11 months from originally planned and the Chevy Crossover by 21 months. Bearing in mind the Hummer ships late next year - at the moment there is no drivable development vehicle. At this presentation we also got to see the Hummer SUV in the background. Similar specs to the Hummer Truck - 350 miles of range, 1000hp and 0-60 in 3 seconds https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a34730248/gm-accelerates-electrification-plans/ TESLA OPENS NORTH CHINA'S LARGEST V3 SUPERCHARGER STATION Tesla tweeted that they opened up the V3 Superchargers station in downtown Beijing."the supercharging station is the largest V3 supercharging station in North China, a total of 21 V3 super charging piles. At present, Tesla has set up a total of 45 super charging stations and 34 destination charging stations in Beijing, covering the urban core and surrounding popular self-driving routes." repotrs SMM News: "Tesla will build nearly 650 super charging stations, more than 5000 super charging piles and more than 2000 destination charging piles in China, covering more than 270major cities and inter-city connections. In addition, in view of the problem that some Tesla super-charging pile parking spaces are occupied by fuel vehicles, Tesla set up intelligent ground locks or property management personnel in the parking spaces, in which Tesla car owners need to scan the QR code above the parking spaces before charging the car to obtain verification information, which can be "unlocked" after entering the verification information into the APP." https://news.metal.com/newscontent/101322517/Tesla-the-largest-V3-supercharging-station-in-North-China-landed-in-Wangjing-Beijing/ https://twitter.com/teslacn/status/1329059302716235779 https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-china-installed-parking-barrier-to-prevent-ice-occupy-the-superchanger.45088/ TESLA OPENS WORLD’S NORTHERNMOST SUPERCHARGER STATION "Varangerbotn, some 400 kilometers inside the Arctic Circle, is the most faraway location Tesla has turned on the power anywhere on the European continent. The two nearest Supercharger stations are Puoltikasvaara (Sweden), 623 km to the south, and Sørkjosen (Norway) 562 km to the west." says The Barents Observer: "Ten new Supercharger stations inside the Arctic Circle in northern Scandinavia are in the pipe. The network is geographically well distributed throughout the region and the chosen locations are at the main crossroads. As previously reported by The Barents Observer, local power companies in Troms and Finnmark county, with financial support from the Norwegian state, are deploying a network of 17 high-power 175 kW chargers and eight 50 kW fast chargers. By November 20, nine of the stations are opened, while most of the remaining will be connected to the grid before Christmas." https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/new-energy/2020/11/tesla-opens-worlds-northernmost-supercharger-station TESLA FIRMWARE HINTS AT MODEL Y RANGE BOOST "Tesla firmware revealed that the Model Y may receive a range boost via an efficiency package in 2021. Resident Tesla hacker @greentheonly found evidence in Tesla’s 2020.44.5 firmware that possibly indicate an increase in the Model Y’s range next year. " says Teslarati: "According to the trusted hacker, Tesla released an efficiency package for the Model 3 already. It could release a similar efficiency package for the Model Y. The Model Y efficiency package would probably compliment the release of the all-electric crossover’s seven-seater variant. In October, Elon Musk revealed that the Fremont Factory would start production on Model Y’s seven-seat version this month. He predicted that initial seven-seater Model Y deliveries could start as early as December, right in time for Christmas and New Year’s." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-range-update-efficiency-package-2021/ PROTERRA CELEBRATES ITS 1,000TH BATTERY-ELECTRIC BUS "Broward County Transit (BCT) has agreed to purchase 12, 40-foot Proterra® ZX5™ battery-electric transit buses with 660 kWh of onboard energy and the DuoPower™ drivetrain. With this purchase, Proterra has now sold more than 1,000 battery-electric transit buses in North America." write Mass Transit website: "introduced in September, the Proterra ZX5 features more energy storage and a longer drive range. Proterra says the DuoPower drivetrain delivers nearly twice the horsepower and five times better fuel efficiency than a standard diesel engine. The DuoPower drivetrain features two electric motors that deliver a 550 horsepower, accelerating a ZX5 bus from zero to 20 mph in under six seconds." EV ENQUIRIES SOARED 500% AFTER GOVERNMENT’S 2030 CAR SALES RULING "Electric vehicle (EV) enquiries soared by 500% after this week’s UK Government announcement that it plans to ban the sale of cars and vans powered wholly by petrol or diesel engines in 2030." according to AM Online: "As Prime Minister Boris Johnson set the sector on the path to an all-out ban to include hybrids from 2035 car buyers headed online to see what their immediate alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) buying options might be today, according to data from BuyaCar. The online car sales portal said that EV enquiries would normally represent around 300 searches per day, from a stock of more than 60,000 cars, but this week’s announcement saw that figure shoot up to 1,679 in the 24 hours following the Prime Minister’s announcement. https://www.am-online.com/news/market-insight/2020/11/20/ev-enquiries-soared-500-after-government-s-2030-car-sales-ruling You can listen to all 933 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. This episode features Louis Sapirman, chief ethics and compliance officer at Panasonic North America, who talks with LRN’s Ben DiPietro about the need for empathy by companies during the pandemic, the ways companies can help address racial injustice, and what it means to be the white parent of an adopted Black teen-aged son in 2020 America. “Corporate America is a great Petri dish for building the type of society that we actually want externally. I would challenge all companies to take the time, not just to talk, not just to communicate...but to take the time to look within themselves and say what can we do to strengthen our own cultures...so that it reflects the way we want society as a whole to be.” - Louis Sapirman Louis A. Sapirman is the chief ethics and compliance officer and chief compliance counsel for Panasonic Corporation of North America, the principal North American subsidiary of Panasonic Corp. He oversees the company’s regulatory and compliance function, maintaining a culture of ethics, and ensuring all employees are upholding Panasonic's values in their work. Sapirman previously served as associate general counsel and chief compliance officer for the Dun & Bradstreet Corp. During his tenure, the company was recognized as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. Prior to moving in-house, Louis worked in private practice with several law firms, including Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr, and Buchanan Ingersoll. He earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the State University of New York-College at Geneseo, and his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers School of Law in Newark, N.J. Outside of work, Sapirman is an avid volunteer, including his work with the Giving Network, and as a former member of the Board of Trustees of Rutgers University. What You’ll Learn on This Episode: [1:06] What sparked Sapirman’s interest in ethics and compliance and how has his career path led him to his current role? [3:43] What are some of Panasonic’s core values? [4:41] What were Sapirman’s goals after joining the company and how has Covid affected their progress? [6:50] What are some of Sapirman’s concerns from a ethics and compliance perspective as it relates to reopening post-Covid? [8:23] How can employers handle employees who are reluctant to return to in-office work? [13:38] How has Sapirman’s experience with his own son shaped how he views the current climate? TESLA HIRING PRODUCTION ASSOCIATES FOR NEW PILOT BATTERY CELL LINE "With Tesla's Battery Day – which has been pushed back on numerous occasions – finally just around the corner, in addition to regular tidbits of information popping related to the automaker's "Roadrunner" project and "Project Palladium," the company is now officially hiring." says InsideEVs: "It comes as no surprise Tesla is hiring for its battery cell production line, which is reportedly opening soon, though Tesla has yet to confirm many specifics related to the battery manufacturing system or projects. We do know it will run the new battery line 24/7 with four shifts and some 100 workers. The automaker is now seeking 'Production Associates' and a 'Controls Engineering Manager.' These new employees will work on Tesla's pilot battery cell production line. On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, on the same day as Tesla's Annual Meeting of Stockholders, we should have many more details thanks to Tesla's Battery Day." https://insideevs.com/news/436867/tesla-hiring-pilot-battery-cell-production-line/ PANASONIC AIMS TO BOOST ENERGY DENSITY IN TESLA BATTERIES BY 20% "Panasonic Corp (6752.T) plans to boost the energy density of “2170” battery cells it supplies to Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) by 20% in five years and commercialize a cobalt-free version “in two to three years”, the head of its U.S. EV battery business said." according to a Reuters report: "This is the first time Panasonic, a leading cell provider for the world’s top electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla, has outlined these targets, putting down a marker in a highly competitive sector to stay ahead of the game. Panasonic introduced the “2170” lithium-ion cells, with the nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) cathode chemistry, for Tesla’s Model 3 in 2017. Researchers say it already has the highest energy density at above 700 watt-hour per litre. A cobalt-free version on the other hand would cut reliance on a costly and controversial component, which makes batteries stable but poses ethical issues given controversial labour conditions in top producer the Democratic Republic of Congo. From September, the firm will start converting lines at its factory in Nevada that it operates with Tesla as it prepares to further boost the energy density of the cells. CATL is supplying Tesla with low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that contain no cobalt. " https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-tesla-exclusive/exclusive-panasonic-aims-to-boost-energy-density-in-tesla-batteries-by-20-executive-idUSKCN24V1GB GM WILL HELP EVGO TRIPLE ITS FAST CHARGER NETWORK IN THE US "General Motors is working with electric vehicle charging network EVgo to build more than 2,700 new fast chargers in cities and suburbs across the US over the next five years. That is more than triple the 800 fast chargers that EVgo currently has on its network, which is in 34 states and serves “more than 200,000 customers.”" says The Verge: "The buildout will help EVgo keep pace with other growing fast-charging networks. Tesla boasts 2,000 Supercharger stations (and 18,000 stalls) worldwide, and Volkswagen’s new Electrify America network is already up to 452 stations in the US. The new stations will be “located in highly visible areas and most will be able to charge at least four vehicles simultaneously,” according to a press release, and will be able to charge at rates between 100kW to 350kW. They won’t be exclusive to GM vehicles, and the first chargers that are part of this new buildout will be available in early 2021. The two companies are targeting around 40 different metropolitan markets." https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/31/21349614/general-motors-evgo-fast-charging-network-investment VOLTA TRUCKS & DPD BRING FULL-ELECTRIC LARGE COMMERCIAL VEHICLE PARCEL DELIVERIES TO LONDON’S ULTRA LOW EMISSION ZONE Volta Trucks, the Scandinavian start-up full-electric vehicle manufacturer, will soon start a pilot test of its forthcoming Volta Zero with DPD, the UK’s leading parcel delivery service. The Volta Zero will be tested by DPD within London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone in Q1-2021, supporting their micro-depot strategy in Westminster. Rob Fowler, Chief Executive Officer of Volta Trucks, added: As the world’s first purpose- built full-electric large commercial vehicle, the Volta Zero was specifically designed to deliver parcels and freight in inner city locations where today’s air quality and noise pollution challenges are at their worst. The Volta Zero’s full-electric, zero-emission operation is perfectly suited to DPD’s distribution requirements within London’s strict Ultra Low Emission Zone, delivering parcels to Central London’s customers in a clean and efficient way.” EV WEST WANTS TO BREAK AN ELECTRIC SPEED RECORD "The electric powertrain nerds at EV West are doing everything they can to propel Southern California hot rod culture into the future. Electric drivetrain swaps in old cars are their bread and butter, but in the process they’ve realized just how fast these things can be. With a custom tube-chassis, a slippery aerodynamic body, a hopped-up Tesla motor, and a rack of high-tech batteries, these mad scientists are aiming for an electric land speed record." reports Jalopnik: "We do know that the Electraliner will have 294 individual Panasonic battery cells for a total of 357 volts, which sounds like a lot. We know that the team plans to haul a small solar array out to the salt for charging purposes, keeping their three swappable racks of batteries topped up between runs. We know that the plan is to only use the top 50 percent of each battery pack, as power drops off precipitously after that. And we know that the whole kit and kaboodle will be cooled with 5 gallons of ice water poured in right before each run." https://jalopnik.com/ev-west-wants-to-break-the-electric-speed-record-at-bon-1844577249 You can listen to all 854 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. TESLA'S FOURTH QUARTER OF PROFIT Headlnes from CNBC: "Tesla reported its first full year of GAAP profits, along with second-quarter results Wednesday. Tesla said its revenue reached $6.04 billion during the quarter, with $428 million of that from regulatory credits. Net income: $104 million (GAAP). Tesla also reported its first full year of profitability on a GAAP basis, which means it can now be considered for inclusion on the S&P 500 index." CNBC says: "On the earnings call Wednesday, Musk announced that Tesla will build its next factory near Austin, Texas. The company plans to dedicate its Fremont, California, car plant to the production of Model S and Model X vehicles for all markets, and for Model 3 and Model Y production for the Western half of North America. The Texas factory, Musk said, will be used for production of the company’s Cybertruck, Semi, and Model 3 and Model Y vehicles for the Eastern half of North America." https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/22/tesla-tsla-earnings-q2-2020.html "Tesla has said that its long-term plans don't include regulatory credits as a meaningful driver, but they have been recently. In fact, without regulatory credits, the automaker would not have become eligible to join the S&P 500. [RBC Capital Markets] noted that credits over the last four quarters have amounted to about $1.05 billion." according to Yahoo! Finance: "The company said its regulatory credits could double this year, which suggests they will reach $1.2 billion. It also reiterated hits guidance of 500,000 vehicle deliveries this year, although it added that reached that number could be more difficult due to supply constraints." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-q2-2020-earnings-stock-155526993.html "Musk on a conference call on Wednesday said Tesla would prioritize growth over profit going forward and focus on making its vehicles more affordable." according to Autoblog: "Tesla on Wednesday affirmed its goal to deliver at least half a million vehicles by the end of 2020 despite production interruptions, including the shutting of its California factory for nearly six weeks of the quarter on orders of local authorities. The company delivered more than 90,000 vehicles in the second quarter, surpassing analyst expectations. Musk said on Wednesday's call that the real limitation to Tesla's growth is battery cell production at an affordable price, and said the company would expand its business with Panasonic Corp and China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL). Tesla will introduce new low-cost, long-life batteries in its Model 3 sedan in China later this year or early next, Reuters reported previously." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/07/22/tesla-reports-profit-fourth-straight-quarter/ From Tesla: "“Our operating profit improved in Q2 despite challenging circumstances. Positive impacts included lower operating costs due to a temporary reduction in employee compensation expense, a sequential increase in regulatory credit revenue and deferred revenue recognition of $48M related to a Full Self Driving (FSD) feature release. These positive contributions were offset by significant costs related to factory shutdowns, as well as a sequential increase in non-cash SBC expense primarily attributable to $101M related to 2018 CEO award milestones. Although the Model Y production line was operating for about four months in the first half of 2020 due to shutdowns, we exited Q2 with Model Y production running at installed capacity. This ramp was significantly faster than our initial Model 3 ramp, which took over nine months to reach the same weekly rate. We are installing additional machinery at the Fremont Factory, which is expected to increase total Model 3 / Model Y capacity from 400,000 to 500,000 units per year." CYBERTRUCK HEADING FOR AUSTIN "Tesla has selected Texas as the location for its next US factory. The factory will be the company’s second in North America and located about 15 minutes from downtown Austin and near the Colorado River. Billed as Tesla’s “Cybertruck Gigafactory”, the facility will be the main production plant for its upcoming all-electric Cybertruck and Model 3/Model Y vehicles for customers in the eastern half of the US." says Teslarati: "Musk confirmed that development on the new Giga Texas facility began on the weekend of July 17." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-gigafactory-texas/ TESLA’S GIGA TEXAS IN AUSTIN, TEXAS, WILL BUILD CYBERTRUCK, SEMI, MODEL 3 & Y " Elon Musk confirmed the location of what is now known as Giga Texas, just outside Austin. The new factory will, as we expected, produce the Cybertruck, but also the Tesla Semi, Model Y, and Model 3 for customers in the Eastern United States." says CleanTEchnica: "Building vehicles in a location in the central United States will help endear a completely new set of potential customers to Tesla, to electric vehicles, and perhaps most importantly, to the Cybertruck itself. Tesla has risen rapidly for those in the technology, clean technology, and environmental segments, but is still largely a mystery to many customers around the world, including millions of truck drivers using their vehicles as a tool for work." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/07/22/confirmed-teslas-giga-texas-in-austin-texas-will-build-cybertruck-semi-model-3-y/ TESLA SOLAR ROOF TRIPLES INSTALLATIONS "Tesla's Solar Roof was slow to ramp up for Tesla because it had to find ways of testing for longevity in an accelerated environment and lower the cost, price, and completion time of installations. The first hint that installations were becoming faster came when Tesla confirmed it had "roughly tripled" solar roof installation in Q2 versus Q1, Electrek reports." Interesting Engineering says: "In its Q2 2020 financial results, Tesla wrote: "Solar Roof installations roughly tripled in Q2 compared to Q1. We continue to expand our installation team to increase the deployment rate." As the rate of global climate change approaches a point of no return, homeowners may jump now more so than ever at the chance to take Tesla's solar panel offer of $1.49 per Watt up — signifying the possibility of the biggest-yet change in U.S. energy infrastructure." https://interestingengineering.com/tesla-solar-offering-149-per-watt-installation-on-existing-roofs TESLA INVITES ACTUARIES TO HELP IT CREATE A ‘REVOLUTIONARY’ INSURANCE COMPANY "Tesla, which has been testing an insurance product for its drivers in California, is preparing to build an insurer, one CEO Elon Musk says will be “revolutionary.” And he’s inviting actuaries to join his cause." according to Insurance Journal: "According to Zachary Kirkhorn, Tesla’s chief financial officer, the company wants to harness the data from its telematics on its cars and drivers to build the new insurance operation beyond California. He said Tesla is nearly finished with testing its California telematics product and hopes to be filing that in several more states by the end of the year with the goal of going nationwide" Elon said: "“I would love to have some high energy actuaries, especially. I have great respect for the actuarial profession. You guys are great at math. Please join Tesla, especially if you want to change things and you’re annoyed by how slow the industry is. This is the place to be. We want revolutionary actuaries” Musk said that accuracy of information is “at the heart of being competitive” with insurance. The choice is between assessing drivers “looking in the rear-view mirror” or assessing them individually, “looking ahead with smart projections” and being able to inform them what actions they can take to reduce their insurance. https://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2020/07/24/576871.htm AFFORDABLE MODELS ARE COMING Elon: "“The thing that bugs me the most is that our cars are not affordable enough. We need to fix that. We want to be slightly positive and maximize growth, and make the cars as affordable as possible" You can listen to all 847 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Show #811 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th June 2020. Welcome to a new Patreon producer NICHOLAS MILLER MODEL S LONG RANGE PLUS: BUILDING THE FIRST 400-MILE ELECTRIC VEHICLE The freedom to travel anywhere is critical to Tesla’s mission. Since the introduction of our 265-mile Model S in 2012, we’ve continued to revisit every aspect of the design to deliver the longest-range and highest-performance electric vehicles on the road. Starting today, all North American Model S Long Range Plus vehicles have an official EPA-rated range of 402 miles, representing a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design. This significant achievement reflects Tesla’s obsession with efficiency and energy frugality, and is realized through several changes, both iterative and transformational, in core hardware and system architecture development by the Tesla engineering, design and production teams. These changes went into production earlier this year when we first started manufacturing Model S Long Range Plus at our factory in Fremont, California. All Model S Long Range Plus vehicles will receive the new 402-mile rating. Significant Mass Reduction - Several lessons from the engineering design and manufacturing of Model 3 and Model Y have now been carried over to Model S and Model X. New “Tempest” Aero Wheels and Tires - 8.5 inch-wide aero wheels reduce aerodynamic drag compared to the previous wheels on Model S Long Range, and when paired with a new custom tire specifically engineered to reduce rolling resistance, add a 2% improvement to overall range. Increased Drive Unit Efficiency - Further improvements to the gearbox in our front permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motors shared with Model 3 and Model Y have resulted in a further increase of 2% more range while driving on the highway. Maximizing Regenerative Braking - To bring the car to a stop smoothly, regenerative braking now works at a lower speed and deceleration rate. THe Verge says: " On Tuesday, the EPA told CNBC that it approved the new range estimate after receiving data from Tesla gathered during an in-house test. EPA approved the new label value based on a review of the testing protocols and data submitted by Tesla and found it was complete and accurate. The improvements result in “a nearly 20% increase in range when compared to a 2019 Model S 100D with the same battery pack design,” Tesla says." https://www.theverge.com/2020/6/16/21292629/tesla-model-3-long-range-plus-epa-rating-aerodynamic-wheels-mass-reduction-efficiency TESLA AND PANASONIC AGREE ON THREE-YEAR BATTERY DEAL "Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) has entered a three-year deal with Panasonic Corp. (OTC: PCRFY) under which the Japanese battery maker will manufacture and supply lithium-ion battery cells at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Nevada." reports Yahoo Finance: "The deal is effective from April 1, 2020, until March 31, 2023, and covers the terms of production capacity commitments by Panasonic and purchase volume commitments by Tesla over the first two years of the agreement. Last month Panasonic’s CFO, Hirokazu Umeda, said they were seeing “strong demand” for Tesla’s battery cells. Umeda signaled interest in expanding the Nevada factory. Panasonic and Tesla’s relationship has been worsening over the past years and the automaker is moving towards making its own batteries." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-panasonic-agree-three-battery-051442193.html Teslarati notes: "Ultimately, the company’s goal is to end a shortage of batteries and begin a massive production phase of lithium-ion cells that will keep up with the increasing demand for Tesla’s electric cars. After Elon Musk announced last week that it would bring its highly-anticipated Semi to “volume production,” it is evident that Tesla’s cell shortage is coming to a close, and the company is on the brink of price parity with gas cars." RIMAC C_TWO PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION SPEEDS UP WITH SECOND ASSEMBLY LINE "Rimac’s recently opened factory in Croatia will be a bit busier going forward. Today, the bespoke electric hypercar maker announced that adding a second production line is “the next stage in the development of the C_Two.” The new line will help the company accelerate C_Two prototype production, cutting the build time in half to around five weeks. This will eventually let the company build four production vehicles a month when operating at full capacity." according to MOtor1: "The automaker promised a stunning all-electric hypercar that’d develop 1,914 horsepower (1,427 kilowatts). Rimac continues to guarantee a top speed of 258 miles per hour (412 kilometers per hour) with a zero to 62-mph (100-kph) time of 1.9 seconds. A sprint to 100 mph (161 kmh) from a standstill will happen in 4.3 seconds." https://www.motor1.com/news/429090/rimac-c-two-second-production-line/ SPAIN'S $4.2 BILLION AID PLAN TO SUPPORT THE AUTO INDUSTRY "Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has announced a 3.7 billion euro ($4.2 billion) aid package for the hard-hit auto industry to promote the production and sale of cleaner cars." reports NY Times: "he Spanish government will spend 250 million euros on cash-for-clunker schemes to encourage drivers to buy new low-emission and electric cars in 2020. Drivers will get up to 4,500 euros to buy a new, cleaner car when they scrap a 20-year-old car. Dealerships will give up to 1,000 euros in additional discounts. Spain will spend another 100 million euros upgrading official vehicles and will let regional authorities spend 100 million euros of their budget surpluses to upgrade their own fleets." https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/06/15/world/europe/15reuters-health-coronavirus-spain-autos-factbox.html TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN HOLLAND Hans: Who said that Model Y wouldn't be seen in Europe before 2021? Well, today at Supercharger Dordrecht. Will they speed this up too? Dutch green test drive plates. User Martin notes that the Model Y could be a private car imported for other car makers or companies to rent out. Charging? Not on Superchargers? An adapater. GM'S MARY BARRA OPTIMISTIC ON U.S. DEMAND, CHINA, EV PROFITABILITY " General Motors Co's top executive struck an optimistic note on Monday about U.S. demand for new vehicles despite the coronavirus pandemic, and the ability to sell electric vehicles at a profit, especially in China." according to Autoblog: "Consultancy AlixPartners has predicted that major automakers face a "profit desert" as they invest heavily in developing electric vehicles despite consumers' ongoing preference for gas-guzzling cars, especially in the U.S. market. When asked about that prediction, Barra said, "We are very excited with the portfolio of EVs we have coming. We are going to continue on that path. We have a strong future ahead, and I don't see that desert." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/06/15/gm-ceo-mary-barra-new-vehicle-demand-electric-cars-china/ BMW I8 HYBRID SPORTSCAR PRODUCTION ENDS AFTER SIX YEARS "Nearly six years after its introduction in the international markets, BMW has decided to pull the plug on the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. The line’s termination was originally slated to be in April, which was delayed due to the shutdown of the plants due to the COVID-19 pandemic." says MSN Autos: The car’s final example rolled out of the factory, finished in a unique Portimao Blue, a one-off shade to commemorate its purpose. The car laid the foundation to our imagination of an ideal futuristic car that came with a radical design. It was powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that worked in tandem with an electric motor to churn out a combined power of 374hp." https://www.msn.com/en-in/autos/news/bmw-i8-hybrid-sportscar-production-ends-after-six-years-final-unit-rolled-out-wearing-blue-paint/ar-BB15yHfh ELECTRIC CARS TO GET GREEN NUMBER PLATES "Owners of electric cars across the UK will be able to fit their vehicles with green number plates from this autumn, a move that is set to both further raise the profile of battery-powered cars, and pave the way for future incentive schemes that will encourage the take-up of electric vehicles." reports Hugo at Auto Express: "Rather than being a fully green plate, EVs will have conventional white and yellow plates on their front and rear, but the plates will feature a green vertical flash on their left-hand side. The plates will, according to the DfT, allow local authorities to “design and put in place new policies to incentivise people to own and drive” electric cars. While details are thin on the ground, the Government suggests reduced parking rates or exemption from emission-zone charges are two incentives councils might consider." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/104561/electric-cars-get-green-number-plates QUESTION OF THE WEEK Tell me about a conversation you had with someone where you introduced them to EVs I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It was reported in the months following that the vehicle would be a Lincoln SUV, but Ford’s luxury marque had not confirmed any parts of those reports until today." https://www.theverge.com/2020/1/29/21113578/lincoln-rivian-electric-suv-ford-platform-tech TESLA'S GIANT HOME BATTERY IS PAYING FOR ITSELF "Four years ago, Tesla installed its first ever Powerwall battery pack in an Australian household, and now the residing Pfitzner family has revealed just how much of an impact the energy-saving measure has made." picks up TechRadar: "When combined with a solar panel system, Powerwall allows users to store any excess energy generated by the panels in order to use it at times when the sun alone can’t provide the necessary power. Over the course of four years, this resulted in the Pfitzner family saving a total of about $5,700 (AU$8,463) on their electricity bills, paying an average of just 30 cents (AU$0.46) per day. It’s worth noting that the family spent AU$16,000 (about $10,800) installing the battery, solar system, and any related hardware to the home, so it hasn’t quite paid itself off yet." https://www.techradar.com/uk/news/worlds-first-tesla-powerwall-is-paying-itself-off-much-faster-than-expected TESLA PARTNERS WITH LG CHEM, CATL FOR BATTERY SUPPLY " Tesla Inc has entered into a partnership with South Korea’s LG Chem and China’s CATL for supply of batteries used in its electric cars, the company said on Wednesday. Show #580 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 14th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TOYOTA USING TESLA-STYLE PANASONIC BATTERIES FOR CHINA HYBRIDS "Toyota Motor Corp has started using the same type of battery that Panasonic Corp designed for Tesla Inc in some of its plug-in hybrids sold in China, sources familiar with the matter said." reports Reuters: "Toyota is using Panasonic’s cylindrical batteries in its new Corolla and Levin plug-in hybrid sedans launched in China this year, one of the people said. The batteries are the same size as those that Panasonic makes for Tesla. The move reflects Toyota’s efforts to secure stable supplies of high-quality batteries amid the accelerated global shift to electricity-powered cars." Reuters continues: "Toyota is believed to have ordered about 50,000 of the cylindrical batteries, pushing Panasonic’s battery plant in Osaka to full capacity, the Nikkei said. Panasonic has been the exclusive battery cell supplier for Tesla, but the U.S. electric vehicle maker is in advanced talks with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd as it seeks to diversify sources of the key component." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-toyota-batteries-china SERIES VERSION VW ID.CROZZ TO BECOME ID.4 "With the ID.3 just out, Volkswagen had further announcements to make at the IAA and said the VW ID. Crozz concept will be called ID.4 once it hits the markets in series. The model is destined for the US first next year and will be the first MEB-based model in the USA." writes electrive: "VW debuted the ID. Crozz at the LA Auto Show in 2017 as a Tiguan-sized electric SUV. However, the study is more reminiscent of an SUV coupé in the style of a BMW X4 or Mercedes GLC coupé. The debut of the series version is set for spring 2020, apparently, however, expect the production model to have a more conservative body shape, closer again to a Tiguan than the X4. At the IAA, VW is showing a heavily camouflaged SUV in a slightly fogged glass box, called “The Next ID” according to the registration number. The rear is steeper here and indeed reminds of a conventional compact SUV, albeit with a significantly longer wheelbase and thus different proportions." https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/14/series-version-vw-id-crozz-to-become-id-4/ VOLVO BECOMES FIRST CAR MANUFACTURER TO OFFER PLUG-IN HYBRID VERSIONS OF ITS ENTIRE MODEL RANGE Volvo reaches an important milestone in its powertrain electrification programme with the debut of the new T5 Twin Engine hybrid system in the multi-award-winning XC40 SUV. The introduction makes Volvo the only manufacturer to offer plug-in hybrid versions across its entire product range, while the XC40 T5 Twin Engine is also the only plug-in hybrid car in the premium compact SUV segment. The T5 Twin Engine marries Volvo’s efficient new 1.5-litre three-cylinder 180hp petrol engine with an 82hp electric motor in a hybrid system that delivers 262hp, making it the most powerful powertrain in the XC40 range. The compact, energy-dense lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 10.7kWh, enabling exhaust emissions-free electric-only driving of up to 28.6 miles (provisional data), according to driving conditions and battery charge levels. The new T5 Twin Engine joins two diesel and three petrol powertrains in the XC40 range, with an all-electric model joining the line-up next year to provide a truly comprehensive choice. AUDI EXPLAINS THE E-TRON’S LOW RANGE "Amidst discussions on electric car battery technology and Tesla’s lead in the EV segment as a whole, Audi has provided some details explaining why its first all-electric SUV, the e-tron 55, only has an EPA-rated range of 204 miles per charge despite its 95 kWh battery. According to the German carmaker, a lot of it has to do with safety. " reports Simon for Teslarati: "The information about the e-tron’s battery and range were related to Jalopnik auto journalist Mack Hogan, who remarked on Twitter that Tesla holds a large lead in the EV market due to its vehicles’ superior performance and range. In response to the journalist’s tweet, the German automaker provided explanations about the e-tron’s range. Audi noted that the e-tron 55’s battery is built to handle serious abuse, and this is a key reason why range had to be sacrificed for the sake of preserving the pack’s long-term durability. This could be seen in the e-tron 55’s cooling system, which individually monitors and cools individual battery pack modules to keep them operating at optimum temperatures. These aggressive and redundant cooling systems ultimately add weight and consume power. Audi does not allow customers to access the e-tron’s full 95 kWh battery, walling 12% of the vehicle’s pack and leaving drivers with a useable 83.6 kWh. Despite having a pack that’s only slightly larger than the e-tron 55’s 95 kWh battery, the Model X Long Range is capable of lasting 325 miles per charge. That’s 38% more range for a battery that’s only 5% bigger. One of those is a new solar array on the roof of the factory. Despite the fact that Tesla is a solar installer, the company has sometimes been slow to install solar power at its own locations. This is in addition to a new structure to test its solar roof tiles at the Fremont Factory. Recent building permit applications show that Tesla is still working on that. Also, another permit application that Tesla filed a few weeks ago shows that Tesla is working on a new Supercharger station at the factory" https://electrek.co/2019/09/11/tesla-solar-array-fremont-factory-new-supercharger/ UK GOVERNMENT PLEDGES OVER £500 MILLION FOR GREEN TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT "The Treasury has launched a £400 million fund to expand Britain’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, with the first £70 million allocated for 3,000 more charge points." according to Intelligent Transport: "A review is currently underway to explore the provision of charge points across major road networks, meaning drivers could charge their car whilst stopping at service stations. This investment complements £1.5 billion of support which is hoped to encourage the use of electric vehicles and make cleaner vehicles more accessible to everyone. £31.5 million has been allocated for research into pioneering technologies to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, and £22 million to research new kinds of air pollutants and minimise their effects on public health." Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “It is fantastic there is already a rapid charge point at almost every motorway service station, and now more charging stations than petrol stations. But I want to see thousands more charge points installed across the UK.” https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/87571/uk-government-pledges-over-500-million-for-green-technology-investment/ FORD MAKES BIG ELECTRIC PUSH IN EUROPE WITH NEW LAUNCHES "Ford Motor Co said on Tuesday it would launch eight electric vehicles in Europe this year, a key step in its target of achieving a majority of its overall sales from electric cars by the end of 2022. The launches include electric variants of the Kuga and Puma SUVs and the Mondeo sedan. The automaker also plans to launch nine other electric vehicles by 2024 in Europe, including a new Mustang-inspired electric SUV next year." according to Autoblog: "The automaker unveiled the models at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany, and said it would partner with six leading energy suppliers across Europe to provide home charging wall box installation services. The carmaker, like its rivals, has been facing stagnant demand and rising costs as it invests billions of dollars in electric, hybrid and autonomous vehicles in efforts to boost sales." The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
If we don't have a nice flow of new clients we cannot expand the business or replace clients who have dropped out. The marketing team have their role to generate leads and the sales team have their responsibilities too. Sadly, the two things they can do directly such as cold calling and networking they avoid. They don't like either because they have no idea of the best practices involved to make these methods sing and yield new buyers. Welcome back to this weekly edition every Tuesday of "THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show" I am your host Dr. Greg Story, President of Dale Carnegie Training Japan and best selling author of Japan Sales Mastery. We are bringing the show to you from our High Performance Center in Akasaka in Minato-ku, the business center of Tokyo. Why the Cutting Edge? In this show, we are looking at the critical areas for success in business in Japan. We want to help advance everyone's thinking so that we be at the forefront, the Cutting Edge, of how to flourish here in this market. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. Korean University students are targeting Japan as a place to work. The Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency KOTRA helped two thousand six hundred and fifty three students obtain jobs abroad, eight hundred and seventeen of whom were hired in Japan. This was roughly thirty percent of the total. KOTRA noted that these South Korean students had high skills not only in Japanese but also in English. One Japanese employer commented, “They have experienced military service and are disciplined. They are good to work with, because they respect their superiors and are diligent”. Given the bad political relations with Korea this trend is somewhat surprising, but looks to continue to grow. In other news, Toyota Motor Corp and Panasonic Corp will integrate their housing businesses as they seek to collaborate on “town development” for next generation lifestyles where homes and vehicles are connected to the internet. Toyota President Akio Toyoda said, “From here on out, information will link all items and services that support people's daily lives. I want to take on a new challenge of providing a new kind of lifestyle”. Finally, as of two thousand and sixteen Japan had thirteen point one hospital beds per one thousand people., the largest ration amongst all the OECD countries., where the average is five point four beds. In fiscal two thousand and eighteen, japan had an excess of two hundred and eleven thousand beds or fourteen per cent more than in two thousand and thirteen. This is important because forty percent of medical costs in japan go to hospitalisation. If a medical institution has excess beds the impulse is to fill them. This is episode number eighty three and we are talking about New Client Acquisition Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going. Japan is a huge market. This is a wealthy, sophisticated society, with a design sense second to none. People work diligently as a team and put in long hours. Achieving annual organic growth should be an expectation of bosses that sales teams should be able to realise. Yet, the results are often flat lining or disappointing. Excuses abound – the yen is too strong, the yen is too weak, competitors are discounting, new competitors are taking market share, etc. Finding new clients is the perpetual Holy Grail of the sales world. Websites lure, social media sponsored posts promulgate, ad words harvest, email sequences are very precisely engineered and content marketing assures expert authority. But this is the world of marketing to unleash the lead flow so that the sales team can follow up. How well do the marketing and sales teams work together? Often, not well. The marketers complain the salespeople are squandering their hard earned efforts. The sales people whine about the poor quality of the lead flow. Down at your shop, are they operating as two independent empires or as hand in glove colleagues furiously plotting together to achieve world domination over your competitors? Targeting new clients doesn't get much attention in Japan. We all know that our avatar represents the typical client and all we have to do is identify others who fit that profile and the chances are high that they too will benefit from our product or service. How many sales teams here have defined their avatar? What about your crew? Can they nominate the ideal client? A standard operating procedure should be the Spider. What is this Spider you might ask? If a client from a particular business has landed in your sales funnel and have bought from you, there are no doubt others in that same niche who would also possibly buy as well. For example, if one airline buys from you there may be a good chance other airlines have similar needs. Imagine a whole bunch of other look alike buyers you can bring into your web. Having made a sale to one company, do the salespeople take the Spider metaphor to heart and start listing up other similar targets to proactively contact. They should, but they don't. Why is that? A major ice wall confronts them – the unknown, unfamiliar and unnerving. They don't have a contact who can introduce them, so they do nothing. The idea of cold calling the target company is judged hard graft, so they don't try. By the way, are your salespeople doing cold calling or are they avoiding it? They know the person who picks up the phone is going to be a slayer of salespeople aspirations. It is not an impossible quest though. There is a way through the initial business barrier by focusing on the design of the conversation that will spark buyer interest. But no, they do nothing and just leave it. It is fair to say it is no push over here. When you cold call a Japanese company, if you don't already know the exact name of the person you are after, then you get cordoned off by the lowest person on the firm totem pole – the youngest female usually. Find out more when we come back from the break Welcome backand let me introduce two sales programs to help your salespeople succeed. The sales booster One and Sales booster Two courses cover all the critical skill areas needed in sales. Sales booster One will next be held on November eleventh, 2019 and sales Booster Two on August fifth, 2019. All the details are on our website at enjapan.dalecarnegie.com Back to where we left off. They are not very lady like though, in fact they are stone cold killers, axing your intention right there to speak with the buyer. In short, they are merciless, ruthless and unrelenting. If you are made of sterner stuff and don't go down immediately without a fight, they will cast you off to the next level on the totem pole. This is the spotty faced, flat headed youngest male in the section, who will promise you that their boss will call you back, as he gleefully gets rid of you, knowing that the hoped for call will never happen. This is grim stuff, so these opening conversations should not be left to whim. These need to be well designed and well practiced, so that you do get through to someone who can make a buying decision. Untrained salespeople try to cold call without a solid plan, fail, and then tell all and sundry that you cannot cold call in Japan. Not true, but you do need to have a proven methodology for doing this. Is this the case for your firm? The fall back position may be to try to meet new clients through networking. Japan is a curious place though in the networking world, because fundamentally, no one is terribly interested or motivated to network. I know you, you know Taro, you introduce me to Taro. I will do the same for you with my contacts. A pretty limited way of doing things, but this is acceptable here. Barefaced bowling up to a complete stranger and introducing yourself, trying create a new connection, is greeted with such shock, that salespeople give up quickly. Can you widen your network of people you have no connection with and can you work the room here? Yes, you can, but again you need a methodology and you need to take salespeople out of their self -imposed limits and practice it. Do your salespeople practice how to network with complete strangers down at your firm? Here is the issue. Cold calling and networking are defined activities with best practices that work. The majority of companies however do not invest in teaching their sales staff how to master these dark arts. Instead they whine about the lack of new clients. This situation is begging for a solution and for the most part will remain that way. The firms who get it will make the effort and collect the new business, while their competition runs around bewildered in ever decreasing circles. Action Steps Design hooks in the cold call conversation that the person receiving the call, wouldn't dare not pass the call on to a key decision maker Train the team on how to create a brilliant first impression when meeting complete strangers. TESLA STOCK FALLS AFTER REPORT THAT GIGAFACTORY EXPANSION IS ON HOLD "Tesla Inc. shares on Thursday traded at their lowest in five sessions after a report said the Silicon Valley car maker and Panasonic Corp. have put on hold plans to expand the Nevada Gigafactory." reports Market Watch: "Demand for battery cells continues to outstrip supply, Tesla said. The two companies made their decisions due to concerns about weakening demand for Tesla vehicles, the Nikkei reported. A Tesla spokesperson told Nikkei Tesla “of course” would continue to make new investments in the Nevada factory as needed. Contrary to what the report implied, “demand for cells continues to outpace supply” and it remains “the fundamental constraint” on the production of Tesla vehicles and stationary energy-storage devices such the Tesla Powerwall and the Powerpack, the spokesperson said." https://www.marketwatch.com/story/tesla-stock-falls-after-report-that-gigafactory-expansion-is-on-hold-2019-04-11 TESLA (TSLA) TO HOLD Q1 2019 FINANCIAL RESULTS AND EARNINGS CALL ON APRIL 24 Simon at TEslarati has the scoop on the next results from Tesla: "Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) has announced that it would be posting its financial results for Q1 2019 after the market closes on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. The company would be issuing a brief advisory with a link to its Q1 2019 Update Letter, which will be accessible from Tesla’s Investor Relations website. A live Q&A session is set for 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Time) to discuss the electric car and energy company’s financial results and outlook." Teslarati notes that the call is earlier in the year than previous Q1 results calls: "While it remains to be seen if Tesla is conducting its early first-quarter earnings call due to positive news on profitability, all eyes will be on the company as it is expected to release some updates on a number of its ongoing and upcoming projects, including Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, the $35,000 Standard Model 3, the Full Self-Driving suite, the Solar Roof, and updates on future products like the Tesla Pickup Truck and the Tesla Semi. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-tsla-q1-2019-earnings-call-date/ GEELY LAUNCHES GEOMETRY EV SPINOFF BRAND "Geely, the Chinese automaker currently behind familiar OEMs like Volvo and Lotus, is about to embark on yet another adventure -- but this time, it's a creation all its own." according to CNET: "Geely on Thursday introduced Geometry, a spinoff automaker dedicated solely to electric vehicles. Geometry aims to have 10 electric vehicles on the market by 2025, covering a wide variety of segments, from sedans to MPVs. At the same time, Geometry rolled out its first car, the not-very-creatively-named Geometry A. Two different batteries are on offer: The 51.9-kWh battery allows for a maximum range of 255 miles, whereas the 61.9-kWh battery extends that range to 311 miles. It's not very expensive, either. The standard-range version starts at 210,000 Chinese yuan (about $31,000) and stretches to 230,000 Chinese yuan (about $34,000). The long-range version starts where the standard-range ends, eventually topping out at a decent 250,000 Chinese yuan (about $37,000). When subsidies are applied, the prices go even lower. " https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/geely-geometry-ev-spinoff-first-sedan-singapore/ BALLARD TO SUPPLY NORLED WITH 200 KW FUEL CELL MODULES TO POWER FERRY IN NORWAY Ballard Power Systems, Inc.—has signed an Equipment Supply Agreement (ESA) with Norled A/S, one of Norway’s largest ferry and express boat operators, to provide two next-generation 200 kW fuel cell modules that will be used to power a hybrid ferry planned to begin operating in 2021. The Ballard modules will be designed and manufactured at the company’s new Marine Center of Excellence at its facility in Hobro, Denmark. The Norled vessel—which has carrying capacity for up to 299 passengers and 80 cars—is expected to be the first liquid hydrogen fuel cell-powered ferry in commercial operation globally. NORWAY AVIATION FIRM ORDERS 60 ALL-ELECTRIC AIRPLANES, DROPS OPERATION COSTS 80% "Norway’s OSM Aviation, a firm that specializes in recruitment and training for the aviation industry, has ordered 60 all-electric planes from Colorado-based electric aircraft manufacturer Bye Aerospace." write Phil for Elecrek today: "OSM Aviation announced the order on its website. The order, which CEO Espen Høiby claims is the largest order for commercial electric planes to date, will be for Bye Aerospace’s eFlyer 2. Høiby said. The eFlyer 2, formerly known as the Sun Flyer, uses a Siemens propulsion system: a 57 lb. SP70D motor with a 90kW peak rating (120 HP), and a continuous power setting of up to 70kW (94 HP). The eFlyer 2 successfully completed its first official flight test on February 8. Each two-seater aircraft will cost $350,000 per plane, but while it costs $110/hr. to operate a conventional training plane, the all-electric planes will only cost $20 per hour, Høiby said." https://electrek.co/2019/04/11/norway-60-electric-airplanes/ HARBOUR AIR IS SWITCHING OVER TO 100% ELECTRIC SEAPLANES "It’s always great hearing stories such as a new one from seaplane operator Harbour Air, which is based in Vancouver, Canada, and is switching its entire fleet to electricity!" says CleanTechnica today: "When the world’s largest floatplane-only airline, Harbour Air, says it is switching to become an electrically powered airline, you know something is going on with the state of aviation battery technology. Harbour Air will be the first seafaring airline to convert its complete fleet of de Havilland Beaver, Otter, Twin Otter aircraft and lone Cessna Caravan to electricity. These 41 vintage aircraft will be converted to reach a longer lifecycle with highly improved efficiency and lowered maintenance costs, a win-win for all." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/04/06/how-maritime-harbour-air-is-switching-over-to-100-electric-seaplanes/ MERCEDES-BENZ TO SUPPLY 56 ELECTRIC URBAN BUSES TO WIESBADEN; The public transport company ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH from Wiesbaden in Germany’s Hesse region has ordered 56 Mercedes‑Benz eCitaro electric urban buses. With this commission, the city of Wiesbaden is switching a fifth of its bus fleet to electromobility within a short period of time. Mercedes‑Benz also takes care of the adaptation of the service yard, the equipment and setting up of charging infrastructure, as well as the charging management process itself. Planned tasks even include building the transformer station for converting medium-voltage to low-voltage electricity as well as the installation of cables on the site. The remaining 41 eCitaro will be equipped with solid-state batteries. Solid-state batteries have a very high energy density—in this case, seven battery packs are sufficient to provide a total capacity of 441 kWh. With the solid-state batteries, the eCitaro can meet about 70% of all requirements without opportunity charging. The characteristics of solid-state batteries differ significantly from NMC batteries—different shape, larger and not suitable for quick-charging. As a result, city buses equipped with them cover different operational profiles. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz will offer the eCitaro with a choice of NMC or solid-state batteries. BERNIE ECCLESTONE CLAIMS THE FUTURE OF RACING IS ELECTRIC Jalopnik says: "Despite the fact that Bernie Ecclestone is no longer at the helm of Formula One, the man still makes headlines with his often-sensational takes about racing. This time, he’s back with one hell of a claim: F1 is the motorsport series of past. Formula E is the future. Yes. Bernie Ecclestone, the man who was “horrified” by F1's quiet engines, has sided with the near-silent power units of the Formula E cars. FE, he argues in a Reuters interview, is going to be the way forward in the future: It’s a different form of entertainment but Formula E will begin to get much, much bigger and better, which is slowly what they are doing anyway. And Formula One will suffer because of that. There’s more chance there of big, big expansion [in Formula E] and more chances commercially than there is of changing things in Formula One." https://jalopnik.com/bernie-ecclestone-claims-the-future-of-racing-is-electr-1833969146 AUDI E-TRON SALES IN MARCH KICKED OFF AT FOUR DIGIT VOLUME InsideEVs' has the scoop on Audi etron numbers: "March was under the siege of the Tesla Model 3, but it wasn’t the only important BEV model introduced in Europe, as Audi finally started customer deliveries of the e-tron. According to Audi’s press release, we assume that sales exceeded 1,000 as the new registrations in the two biggest markets were: Norway – 621 Germany – 490" COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. VOLKSWAGEN'S ELECTRIFY AMERICA BUYS TESLA DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS Reuters: "Volkswagen AG unit Electrify America said on Monday it will install Tesla Inc battery storage packs at more than 100 charging stations across the United States to keep costs down for drivers charging electric vehicles. Tesla Powerpack battery systems draw power from the grid during off-peak hours and store it for use during peak hours to avoid or reduce demand charges. Electrify America will install most of its battery packs in areas of the United States where there is a higher concentration of electric vehicle owners, particularly on the West Coast and the Northeast." Bloomberg: "The 210-kilowatt battery systems will each have about 350 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and a Tesla spokesman declined to comment. TechCrunch: "The company will begin the next phase of installations this summer. Electrify America’s bet on Tesla battery systems illustrates the deep need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is low cost, easy to access and as fast as possible. It’s not enough to simply dot highways and urban areas with public chargers. The deal also represents a small, yet possibly fruitful area for Tesla as it tries to grow its energy storage business." Inverse: "Tesla develops the Powerpack for use with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, enabling buyers to store power and distribute when needed. The firm’s biggest installation to date is the 100-megawatt facility in Hornsdale, South Australia, used to help the renewables-dependent state avoid blackouts. Other consumers include the Manchester Science Park, using the batteries to create an “energy island,” and the Netherlands’ LomboXNet charging facility that uses solar energy to power electric cars." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electrifyamerica-tesla/volkswagens-electrify-america-buys-tesla-devices-for-ev-charging-stations-idUSKCN1PT1NK https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-04/volkswagen-to-use-tesla-batteries-at-u-s-car-charging-stations https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/04/vws-electrify-america-will-use-tesla-battery-packs-to-lower-charging-costs/ https://www.inverse.com/article/53004-volkswagen-s-electrify-america-to-install-hundreds-of-new-tesla-powerpacks TESLA BUYING MAXWELL, COULD SIGNAL MOVE TO SOLID STATE BATTERY "Tesla is buying up Maxwell Technologies. In a deal expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2019, the California automaker has offered $4.75 per share for the company. That’s a healthy 55-percent increase above the energy storage technology company’s share price of $3.07 at Friday’s market closing. The transaction is said to take the form of a stock swap and received unanimous approval from the Maxwell board." reports Domenick at InsideEVs: "Maxwell is mostly known for its ultracapacitors, which are used by other automakers. Indeed, Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely partnered with the firm to use the energy storage devices in five of its hybrid products. But does that mean Tesla has picked them up for that particular technology? Maybe, but it should be noted that Maxwell, which has a footprint in Germany, South Korea, China, as well as the United States, has other tech that makes it valuable." Tesla told Electrek: "“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Electrek said: "The automaker might be more interested with Maxwell’s dry electrode technology that they have been hyping recently. Maxwell claims that its electrode enables an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg in current demonstration cells and they see a path to over 500 Wh/kg." https://insideevs.com/tesla-buys-maxwell-technologies-solid-state/ https://electrek.co/2019/02/04/tesla-acquires-ultracapacitor-battery-manufacturer/ PANASONIC CUTS PROFIT OUTLOOK ON SLOWING CHINA DEMAND; TESLA BUSINESS A BRIGHT SPOT "Japan’s Panasonic Corp cut its annual profit outlook after disappointing quarterly earnings it blamed on a slowing Chinese economy hit by a trade war with the United States that hurt demand for auto components and factory equipment." reports Reuters: "China’s shrinking car market has crimped demand for automotive components, Panasonic said, while sales have also dropped for electronic devices used in air conditioners. The energy division, which includes its battery business with U.S. electric car maker Tesla Inc, provided some good news in a bleak quarter, posting its first operating profit in three quarters." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results/panasonic-cuts-profit-outlook-on-slowing-china-demand-tesla-business-a-bright-spot-idUSKCN1PT0CZ 8% PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN CHINA! From Jose Pontes at CleanTechnica "After a 3 month streak of record-breaking sales, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in December just kept on pushing forward. China registered over 180,000 PEVs in December, making it the 4th record month in a row and achieving 70% year-over-year (YoY) growth. That meant that 2018 sales ended north of the 1 million units mark. Yes, over 1 million PEVs in one year. And to think that 2017 was the first year that plug-ins reached 1 million sales globally. The PEV market share hit yet another all-time best, ending the month with 8% share. The 2018 PEV market share ended at a record 4.2% share, double the share of 2017." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/8-plug-in-electric-vehicle-market-share-in-china/ 2020 PEUGEOT 208 EV SPIED COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Following the reveal of the all-new Clio, Groupe PSA is feeling the pressure from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for new, world-class products. The French part of the alliance won’t have it easy once Peugeot comes out with the all-new 208, which shares the CMP with the Opel Corsa." according to AutoEvolution: "Spied cold-weather testing in Scandinavia, the Peugeot looks similar to internal combustion-engined test mules. Styling is inspired from the 508, probably the coolest-looking sedan in the segment. The camera integrated into the rearview mirror enables Level 2 autonomous driving functions. By 2025, the French automaker plans to electrify 100 percent of its lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-peugeot-208-ev-spied-cold-weather-testing-132148.html MOBILE METERING: HONDA BUYS INTO UBITRICITY "Honda has acquired a significant stake in the Berlin-based company Ubitricity as part of a new financing round. The Japanese automobile manufacturer may have far-reaching plans with Ubitricity’s mobile metering technology." says an Electrive report: "electrive was able to glean the information about Honda’s participation in the Berlin-based company specializing in mobile electricity meters that for example turn street lamps into charging posts. Now a short announcement from deutsche-startups.de (based on the changes in the commercial register) confirms the Japanese manufacturer’s investment.Honda’s first fully electric model for the European market, the Urban EV, will probably go on sale in 2020. However, a near-series version will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and the production model will celebrate its premiere at the IAA in September." https://www.electrive.com/2019/02/02/mobile-metering-honda-buys-into-ubitricity/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. NISSAN UPDATES LEAF SOFTWARE FOR ALL AFTER #RAPIDGATE First up a public service announcement, following all of Nissans troubles over the last 12months. We first heard about a software fix from Bjorn Nyland who tested a newer LEAF 40, and it took a higher charge speed whilst being pretty hot. He raised questions over the long term health of the battery, but it was an anecdotal story of someone contacting their dealer for the fix, and being turned away which concerned me. If I were Nissan I would be on a PR offensive to superserve my customers. Well now we have more details on the story thanks to Electrive.com: "Nissan is now offering a software update for Leaf models with a 40 kWh battery to correct the significant reduction of the DC charging power that occurred under the so-called Rapidgate." says an article today: "A Nissan spokesman told electrive that they would offer the for all Leaf models produced between 8 December 2017 and 9 May 2018. Electric vehicles with a later production date already have the current software version." I was never able to test it, so i never commented on it at the time, despite a fair few complaints and people saying I was ignoring it because I was in Nissan's pocket. I like to think of it as not defaming a company for something I had no personal proof over, but hey, you feel free to get yourself sued. However as time went on there was a general reluctance from Nissan to hold their hands up and say it was a fault, but instead they recognised the issue and it was expected behiviour. However Electrive did test it themselves: "Our editors put this to the test and could confirm the problem. According to the Japanese carmaker, the Leaf has “safety precautions” to protect the battery during repeated rapid charging processes. These are important for the service life of the powerpack, not least due to a lack of thermal management." And of course the Nissan warranty is unaffected. Is that good enough, LEAF drivers? What else would Nissan realistically do? Should the LEAF be thought of a town car, with very occasional long drives, if this problem rears up on the 62kWh car? And if so, why carry around such a heavy battery on a town car, when a lighter car would be more efficient? https://www.electrive.com/2019/01/22/nissan-updates-leaf-software-after-rapidgate/ TOYOTA AND PANASONIC CONFIRM JV FOR EV BATTERIES "Toyota Motor Corp and Panasonic Corp said on Tuesday they will launch a joint venture next year to make electric vehicle (EV) batteries, leveraging the heft of one of the world’s largest automakers and battery makers to expand their EV push." confirmed Reurters today: "Toyota will own 51 percent of the joint venture, and Panasonic the rest, the two companies said in a joint statement, confirming previous reports." https://www.reuters.com/article/toyota-panasonic/toyota-panasonic-announce-jv-for-ev-batteries-idUST9N1CC01D PEUGEOT 2008 COMING AS A FULL EV "Peugeot will follow up the imminent launch of its new 208 supermini with a new 2008 crossover, due to be revealed in the autumn." reports Autocar: "The most significant change brought about by the new platform is that Peugeot will offer the 2008 as a fully electric model for the first time. Expected to be launched in early 2020, not long after the conventional petrol and diesel variants, the electric version follows on from the platform-sharing 208 and will adapt that car's electric motor and lithium ion battery pack. During its 2019 National Dealer Conference at the NEC in Birmingham, the carmaker spelled out how its sees the growth of EV adoption will change the face of dealership service required by consumers." according to today's report by Paul Myles for TU Automotive: "David Peel, managing director of Peugeot UK, told dealers to ‘be prepared’ for the energy transition especially with the brand committing to electrifying its entire product range over the next five years." https://www.tu-auto.com/peugeot-warns-uk-dealers-to-ready-for-ev-revolution/ TESLA SAYS IT RECEIVED BATTERY QUOTES FROM LISHEN BUT NO DEAL AGREED "Tesla Inc said on Tuesday it had received quotes from Tianjin Lishen to supply batteries for its new Shanghai electric car factory but had not signed any agreement with the Chinese firm." according to Business Report: "Reuters earlier on Tuesday reported, citing two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, that Tesla and Lishen had signed a preliminary agreement and were working on the details." https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/international/tesla-says-it-received-battery-quotes-from-lishen-but-no-deal-agreed-18905698 HONDA TEASES NEW EV PROTOTYPE AHEAD OF GENEVA DEBUT Yesterday I talked how the Honda Urban EV won the Readers Vote for the What Car? Car Of The Year Awards, despite still being a prototype. Well today, "Honda confirms the rumors about the world premiere of a new EV prototype at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The Japanese manufacturer revealed a design sketch of the prototype and said that the production version will go on sale later this year." https://insideevs.com/honda-teases-new-ev-prototype/amp/ VW: SMALL ELECTRIC CARS MAY BE UNAFFORDABLE FOR SOME This is a strange story next. Let me give you basics and we'll work out what it means. "The move to electric vehicles will make cars significantly more expensive, meaning they may become unaffordable for people on low incomes in the future, the chairman of Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said in an interview published on Sunday." according to Reuters. Hans-Dieter Poetsch told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper: "We have the clear goal of making electromobility accessible to a broad section of the population, that is to make it affordable. The current price level cannot stay the same if these cars are equipped with electric motors. Therefore, it will inevitably lead to significant price increases in the small car segment.” And then: "Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess warned that the European Union’s proposed emissions target for 2030 is too demanding and the resulting push to EVs could make motoring too expensive for some consumers." which was picked up by Automotive News Europe: "Diess said VW Group will be able to comply with the EU's average fleet carbon dioxide emissions of around 60 grams per km by 2030 by boosting sales of its full-electric cars to between 45 percent to 50 percent of the group's total volume. But he warned: "I am not sure how many customers could afford it." As examples, Diess said the retail price of a VW Up minicar that could rise in price by about 3,500 euros to 14,500 euros to be compliant with the 2030 emissions target. The price for the small Polo model could rise by 4,000 euros, he said." So this is where I'm at a loss. Europe has very stringent emissions rules coming in for 2030, it's based on the total fleet of cars you sell and it's CO2 they're measuring. VW say they're going to be an electgric leader and will be making enough EVs by then not be affected by the rules. The first point about EVs being more expensive than piston cars is something you can't comment on unless you have access to VW finances. But a 40kWh pack would add $4,000 dollars when prices come down to $100/kWh. So for a VW Up that size battery would be overkill. Maybe add $1,000 dollars for the motor and ancillaries, so you start at $5,000 and have to build the car on top of that. But this is by 2030 - and remember can't compare 100 year old piston technology to battery technology, in the last 10 years alone the cost of battery's has come down from roughly $1,000 to $150 per kWh. Imagine what tech will be like in 11 years! Remember CEO's don't say things like this for no reason, they have a game plan. And when you're so high up the food chain, pretty much every public comment you make will be politically driven to influence someone. As for the comment that emissions regulations will mean small cars get more expensive to meet those demands. But hang on, aren't we always being told VW will make so many EVs by 2030, the way I see it, that will easily offset the total fleet emissions. So sell a bunch of EVs and which allows you to keep selling the last few piston cars. Final thought – 11 years ago you had never heard of Tesla. The automotive industry relies on stability, and to them it’s natural to talk with certainty about 2030. At best it’s a projection, at worst it’s fantasy guesswork. Truth is, nobody knows what the car industry will be like 2030 and which incumbents have long since gone bust because they didn’t move to EV quick enough. https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electric-vehicles/small-electric-cars-may-be-unaffordable-for-some-vw-chairman-to-newspaper-idUKKCN1PE0EJ https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vws-diess-warns-emissions-push-could-make-cars-too-expensive-some-consumers INNOGY EMOBILITY UK APPOINTS NISSAN’S KARL ANDERS AS MANAGING DIRECTOR "Former Nissan Fleet national EV manager Karl Anders has been appointed as managing director of innogy eMobility UK." says FleetNews: "Innogy eMobility UK acts as a technology and service provider with an eMobility hardware and software portfolio. The company is a supplier to several major automobile manufacturers and has already started the roll out for the Audi UK dealer network." https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/people-news/2019/01/22/innogy-emobility-uk-appoints-nissan-s-karl-anders-as-managing-director COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. TOYOTA, PANASONIC TO SET UP EV BATTERY JV IN 2020 Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Panasonic Corp (6752.T) are set to launch a joint venture next year to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EV) in an effort to compete with Chinese rivals, a source familiar with the matter said." according to a Reuters report: "The joint venture, to be owned 51 percent by Toyota and the rest by Panasonic, could also provide batteries to Toyota’s EV technology partners Mazda Corp (7261.T) and Subaru Corp (7270.T), the source said on Sunday. Under a planned joint venture, Panasonic would shift most of its prismatic battery-related equipment and facilities in Japan and China to the joint venture, while those producing batteries for U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) will remain under the company, the source said." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-toyota-panasonic-idUKKCN1PE05R RENAULT ENDS YEAR 2018 ON A HIGH The end of the year for Renault was pretty significant as French manufacturer reports sales of 7,000 all-electric cars in December, which is not only 77% more than a year ago, but also an all-time record" says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Outstanding results are the fruit of record sales of both, the ZOE and Kangoo Z.E. Here are numbers for December and the full year (excluding Twizy): Renault ZOE – 5,611 (up 61%) and 40,508 YTD (up 27%), Renault Kangoo Z.E. – 1,363 (up 196%) and 9,004 YTD (up 107%), Renault Master Z.E. – 26 and 102 YTD (new)." https://insideevs.com/renault-sold-record-electric-cars-december/ ELECTREK REVIEW JAGUAR I-PACE Fred Lambert spent 4 days in the I-PACE and has a pretty long review on Electrek. His conclusion: "There’s a lot to like about the I-Pace. I think it’s one of the best-looking vehicle out there period. The range is going to be good enough for most people, especially if you plan to use it to get around a city, but I think it would be hard to take the vehicle on a road trip that requires more than two full charges at least until the non-Tesla charging infrastructure with over 100 kW of capacity becomes more extensive. It’s starting to be the case in Europe but less so in the US, and I think that will be reflected in the sales of the I-Pace – though the US could eventually catch up with a few new networks coming up. I think the I-Pace would make a great family vehicle as long as you are not expecting the space of a full-size SUV." https://electrek.co/2019/01/20/jaguar-i-pace-review/ 2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC ARRIVES THIS SEPTEMBER WITH MORE RANGE "The hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Hyundai IONIQ will receive their facelift first in July, two months later the electric version will get its." report Pedro at PushEVs: "The battery capacity will increase from 28 to 38,3 kWh (37 %), while the range will increase from 280 to 378 km (NEDC), matching the Nissan LEAF’s (40 kWh version) range. The fact that the battery capacity increases by 37 % while the range increases “only” by 35 % makes me conclude that the battery is slightly heavier, contributing for a minor efficiency decrease. Nonetheless, the ranges that matter are the realistic ones, by this I mean the WLTP and EPA. While the WLTP range should increase from 204 to 277 km, the EPA range should increase from 124 to 168 miles. I would say that 300 km (186 miles) in the summer and 250 km (155 miles) in the winter will be easily achieved." COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 29th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. BP TO BUY CHARGEMASTER, THE UK’S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING COMPANY And so the press release came through at 8am this morning, British Petroleum aka BP will buy Chargemaster plc, to become BP Chargemaster, just 10 years after it launched. All staff keep their jobs. The company with 6,500 charge points. There are 40,000 customers of the POLAR network, also owned by Chargemaster, and they pay a monthly subscription, get it as part of their home energy tariff or use it on a pay-as-you-go basis. BP said: "Combining BP's and Chargemaster's complementary expertise, experience and assets is an important step towards offering fast and ultra-fast charging at BP sites across the UK and to BP becoming the leading provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, on the road or at home." David Martell Chief Exec of Chargemaster said: "I am truly excited to lead the Chargemaster team into a new era backed by the strength and scale of BP, which will help us maintain our market-leading position and grow the national POLAR charging network to support the large range of exciting new electric vehicles that are coming to market in the next couple of years" Business Green: "The move follows rival Shell's acquisition last year of European EV charging network Newmotion and provides the latest evidence that leading oil majors are looking to diversify into clean technologies. BP customers in the UK can expect to access BP Chargemaster chargers on forecourts over the next 12 months." This is small change in the grand scheme of the oil industry. Business Green add "The deal is the latest major low carbon investment from the company, which earlier this year returned to the solar market with its $200m investment in PV developer Lightsource, of which the oil giant now owns a 43 per cent share." BP predicts there will be 12 million electric cars on Britain's roads by 2040, a marked increase from the 135,000 in use last year. This Is Money: "In October last year, BP's rival, Shell, snapped up Dutch-based NewMotion, which is the owner of one of Europe's biggest electric charging networks" Fred at Electrek's take was; "f you have a weird feeling about an oil company buying into EV technology and companies, it’s maybe because you remember that oil companies once bought and killed some EV tech. Chevron did it with the battery tech in the original Toyota RAV4 EV and there were a few other examples with electric motors in the 1990s. But I think I can safely say that it won’t be repeated. EVs have become so mainstream this time around that killing off a few startups wouldn’t have a major impact." The Independent looks to the future: "It also plans to roll out ultra-fast charging equipment, which will include 150kW rapid chargers, which will take just 10 minutes to give cars enough energy to drive 100 miles." HYUNDAI KONA UK PRICES PANASONIC FLAGS BATTERY SHORTAGES "A senior Panasonic Corp official on Thursday said a pickup in production of Tesla Inc’s Model 3 cars, after earlier delays, has resulted in occasional battery shortages." accordingt to news agency Reuters: "Panasonic currently produces battery cells for Tesla in Japan as well as at Tesla’s so-called Gigafactory in the U.S. state of Nevada, which Panasonic jointly operates. Panasonic sees batteries as central to its plan to boost automotive business revenue to 2.5 trillion yen by the year through March 2022 from 1.8 trillion yen ($16.3 billion) estimated for this financial year." Yoshio Ito head of Panasonic’s automotive business, said at the company’s general shareholders meeting: "“There has been a sharp improvement in production equipment and we are now occasionally having battery shortages. I wouldn’t say the delay (in Tesla’s Model 3 production) had no impact on our business, but we are in close communications with Tesla and working to steadily improve production" BYD WANTS THE BATTERY CROWN And although Elon Musk has often talked about creating the worlds biggest building, "BYD Co. is building what would become the world’s largest vehicle-battery factory next year in an effort by the Chinese electric-car maker to increase capacity and help revive earnings growth." If not by floor space, then by capacity. com say: "The plant will have an annual capacity of 24 gigawatt-hours when it is fully in use in 2019, enough to equip 1.2 million BYD Tang electric cars, according to the manufacturer backed by Warren Buffett. BYD invested $1.5 billion in the factory, which will help meet the company’s plan to boost its battery-making capability almost fourfold by 2020." CARE BY VOLVO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE LAUNCHES " Care by Volvo subscription service is about to debut its most desirable vehicle, as the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered sedan will be available exclusively via the (iOS-only) app starting at noon ET today" reportrs Engadget: "Only 20 of the AWD cars are coming to the US, with upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrains capable of 415HP thanks to a finely tuned ECU, 19-inch rims, upgraded suspension and gold-painted Brembo brake calipers. With the service, the cars will cost $1,100 that covers the car plus accompanying insurance and maintenance. The only things you'll need to pay for otherwise are taxes/registration fees and gas/electricity." REVEALED: 34,000 FINED LAST YEAR FOR NOT TAXING VEHICLES WHICH ARE FREE TO TAX "Drivers paid over £500,000 in fines last year for not applying to tax vehicles which cost nothing to tax, data obtained by MoneySavingExpert.com shows." "Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that between April 2017 and April 2018 the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) issued 34,012 penalties to the registered keepers of 'nil-rated' vehicles - vehicles which don't cost any money to tax." according to MoneySavingExpert.com Failure to register, even tho though it's registering to pay £0, could get you an £80 fine.
