Gabriel Fanelli is back on the Grey Dynamics Podcast, and this time as our new Director of Training.Look, I've been wanting to have this conversation since we first met. Gabe's trajectory is different from most people in the intelligence world. Bronze Star recipient, 14 years in the Army, former SOCOM instructor, fluent in Arabic, and now leading our training programs at Grey Dynamics. But what makes this conversation special isn't just his resume.We went deep on this one. We talked about what it really means to be a crypto linguist, not the Hollywood version. But the actual work of listening to intercepted communications while sitting in a forward operating base in Syria. We talked about why he hated being stuck in a SCIF and how he found his way to tactical SIGINT work where he could actually connect with people on the ground.But we also talked about languages in a way I haven't explored on this podcast before. Gabe's father was an archaeologist, and he grew up surrounded by Middle Eastern artifacts and culture. His love for Arabic didn't come from military necessity. It came from genuine fascination. And that makes all the difference when you're trying to connect with people. Whether you're an intelligence collector or just someone trying to understand the world better.We touched on OSINT and where it sits in the intelligence ecosystem. Gabe's take is refreshing. OSINT isn't better than SIGINT or HUMINT, and those disciplines aren't better than OSINT. They're all sinew connecting different parts of the same body. The gatekeeping and chest-pounding about which INT is superior misses the point entirely.And then we got philosophical. We talked about AI's role in intelligence work, about writing and how to convey complex ideas without sucking the humanity out of them, about the goal in life not being happiness but usefulness. Gabe wrote a book called The Resilient Dad after losing a friend to suicide, and his perspective on fatherhood, masculinity, and what it means to show up for people hit differently than most self-help nonsense you see online.This is probably the most introspective conversation I've had on this podcast. SUBMITTED BY: Listener Gary Knight CONNER, JAMES ORINSP4 U.S. ARMY (SP4 is called a Spec 4)VIETNAMDATE OF BIRTH: 08/18/1947DATE OF DEATH: 07/20/2001Jim Conner is someone I rode with while we were both officers on the St. Louis City Police Department in the 1970s. While I was in the Army Reserves, I did not serve in Vietnam. James Orin “Jim” Conner was born August 18th, 1947, in St. Louis. He passed away on July 20th, 2001, at the age of 53. He is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis County. Before we joined the police department and before we met, Jim did two tours of duty in Vietnam. Jim was awarded the following service medals and commendations. They were: 1 Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with "V" Device, several Army Commendation Medals, 39 Awards of the Air Medal, 2 with "V" Device (it is to be noted that a "V" Device is for valor), and 5 Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and Air Crew Wings. He served as a light weapons infantryman in his first tour and as a helicopter crewman in his second tour on a small observation helicopter. He fought in the Ia Drang and A Shau Valleys campaigns.His citation for the Silver Star Medal reads in part that when he was in combat, he was badly wounded when the helicopter that he was in crashed. He was ejected from the helicopter, and, under heavy enemy fire, he returned to the aircraft to pull the wounded pilot from the burning wreckage and held off the enemy until friendly forces could arrive. James Conner is the most decorated member of the Armed Forces interred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for his unwavering acts of valor and service during the Vietnam War.Following his service in the Army, Jim became a police officer on August 24th, 1970. Jim was a highly decorated police officer with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Jim was awarded the following prestigious awards: The department's highest award - the Medal of Valor on November 15, 1977, for unwavering heroism above and beyond the call of duty, the Meritorious Service Award on June 8, 1977, and two Chief's Letters of Commendation on December 4, 1981, and April 13, 1984, for police work above the call of duty. Officer Conner is the "Audie Murphy" of the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Saint Louis. I was not involved in an incident that occurred in the fall of 1976 at the Mansion House apartments in downtown St. Louis, however another officer I know was there. He told me how they had a man with a gun inside the Mansion House, he had the officers pinned down, and he was shooting at them. This officer, who told me the story, said how Jim Connor just “low crawled” past him, took a position, and when the man refused to surrender, Jim took aim and shot the subject. Then Jim just took out a cigarette and lit it. Like it was just another day at the office. Officer Conner retired from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department on April 6, 1992. They were: 1 Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars with "V" Device, several Army Commendation Medals, 39 Awards of the Air Medal, 2 with "V" Device (it is to be noted that a "V" Device is for valor), and 5 Purple Hearts, Combat Infantryman's Badge, and Air Crew Wings. He served as a light weapons infantryman in his first tour and as a helicopter crewman in his second tour on a small observation helicopter. He fought in the Ia Drang and A Shau Valleys campaigns.His citation for the Silver Star Medal reads in part that when he was in combat, he was badly wounded when the helicopter that he was in crashed. He was ejected from the helicopter, and, under heavy enemy fire, he returned to the aircraft to pull the wounded pilot from the burning wreckage and held off the enemy until friendly forces could arrive. James Conner is the most decorated member of the Armed Forces interred at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for his unwavering acts of valor and service during the Vietnam War.Following his service in the Army, Jim became a police officer on August 24th, 1970. Jim was a highly decorated police officer with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. Jim was awarded the following prestigious awards: The department's highest award - the Medal of Valor on November 15, 1977, for unwavering heroism above and beyond the call of duty, the Meritorious Service Award on June 8, 1977, and two Chief's Letters of Commendation on December 4, 1981, and April 13, 1984, for police work above the call of duty. Officer Conner is the "Audie Murphy" of the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Saint Louis. I was not involved in an incident that occurred in the fall of 1976 at the Mansion House apartments in downtown St. Louis, however another officer I know was there. He told me how they had a man with a gun inside the Mansion House, he had the officers pinned down, and he was shooting at them. This officer, who told me the story, said how Jim Connor just “low crawled” past him, took a position, and when the man refused to surrender, Jim took aim and shot the subject. Then Jim just took out a cigarette and lit it. Like it was just another day at the office. Officer Conner retired from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department on April 6, 1992. Join us for an evening with Colonel Chuck Bechtel, whose new memoir, Sent to War, Returning for Peace: My Reconciliation with the Vietnam War, traces a long soldier's journey from the jungles of Vietnam to a quiet reckoning half a century later. Chuck was drafted in 1966, a kid from Pennsylvania who suddenly found himself leading a 43-man infantry platoon with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in 1968–69. His book tells that story—training, combat, fear, loss, and the strange return home to a country that didn't know what to make of its soldiers. But it also reaches beyond the war. Chuck writes about the decades that followed, the invisible weight so many veterans carried, and the hard work of finding peace in the long after. A centerpiece of the memoir is his return trip to Vietnam in 2022 with his wife and a small group of veterans organized by Mrs. Lei Williams, whose own life was shaped by the war. That journey—walking old ground with former enemies and longtime friends—became a turning point. The book captures the tenderness, the surprises, and the healing that can happen when you're finally ready to face the past. Over thirty-five years in uniform, Chuck rose from Private E-1 to full Colonel, commanded at every level from company to brigade, deployed during Desert Storm, and later played a key role in building the Army's 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. His record includes the Bronze Star with “V” for valor, Air Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Combat Infantry Badge, Legion of Merit, and many more. Mike Durant is a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 and Master Black Hawk pilot with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Night Stalkers). Inspired by his father, a First Sergeant in the Army National Guard, and a family friend's helicopter flight, Durant enlisted in 1979. After studying Spanish at the Defense Language Institute and serving as a voice intercept operator in Panama, he graduated from flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama, becoming a Warrant Officer in 1983. He flew over 150 medical evacuation missions in South Korea with the 377th Medical Evacuation Company and later served as an instructor pilot with the 101st Aviation Battalion. Joining the elite 160th SOAR in 1988, Durant flew in Operations Prime Chance, Just Cause, Desert Storm, and Restore Hope. During the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu (Operation Gothic Serpent), his MH-60 Black Hawk was shot down, leaving him severely injured and held captive by Somali militia for 11 days. Despite doctors' doubts, he recovered, ran the 1995 Marine Corps Marathon, and returned to duty, retiring in 2001. Join us for this special Veterans Day episode with Colonel Susan Luz as she shares inspiring and heartbreaking stories of service, resilience, and leadership that translate from the battlefield to the bedside.   SPECIAL GUEST Susan Luz, BSN, MPH, RN graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Nursing. After a clinical rotation at Rhode Island's Institute of Mental Health and public health experiences, she joined the Peace Corps, with her first assignment in Brazil. After leaving the Peace Corps, Luz earned her master's degree in public health nursing from Boston University. She returned to Brazil with Project Hope and then took a job as a nurse-teacher at Central High School in Providence and ran its school-based clinic from 1978 to 2006. While working at Central, she also worked nights at the state Institute of Mental Health and then Gateway Healthcare's Acute Residential Treatment Center. Luz joined the Army Reserves in 1983. She was 56 years old when her unit was later deployed to Iraq in 2006, at the height of the U.S. surge and the bloodiest point of the war. Colonel Luz was the highest-ranking woman in the 399th Combat Support Hospital, a Massachusetts based Army Reserve unit. As a public health nurse with certification as a psychiatric nurse, Luz's mission in Iraq included helping soldiers with emotional trauma, and providing comfort to dying soldiers. Luz formed her own "Band of Sisters," a group of nurses who were not only dedicated to treating wounded soldiers, but also maintaining morale among the troops, especially during the unit's time in the middle of the desert in Al Asad. Luz was awarded the Bronze Star in 2007. During the Civil War, “Soldier's Heart” was the name given to the symptoms we now associate with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. While the condition has had many names in the decades – and wars – that have followed, its toll on soldiers has not abated. Between 11 and 15 percent of Vietnam War veterans are still suffering from PTSD, 50 years after the end of the war. The new documentary “Healing a Soldier's Heart” follows four veterans reckoning with PTSD and with moral injury – the psychological harm we experience when we violate our moral code. We talk with the filmmaker, a Vietnam War veteran and a psychologist about what it looks like to heal. Mike Hayes is a former U.S. Navy SEAL officer who served 20 years in Special Operations. A graduate of one of the toughest SEAL training classes—one of only 19 out of 120 to complete—he deployed throughout South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia, including in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Hayes commanded SEAL Team TWO and led a 2,000-person Special Operations Task Force in southeastern Afghanistan. He also served as Deputy Commander for all Special Operations in Anbar Province, Iraq, and was selected as a White House Fellow (’08–’09). At the National Security Council, he served as Director for Defense Policy and Strategy, where he helped draft a proposed START Treaty and led the White House response to the Maersk Alabama hijacking. His decorations include the Bronze Star for Valor in Iraq, a Bronze Star for Afghanistan, and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
