Francis Galluppi is the writer/director of The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024). After years of touring in various punk bands and an accident that led to a broken wrist, Francis decided it was time for a career shift. During a six month healing process, he picked up his camera and began shooting videos around the house with his wife. Almost immediately, he fell in love with the creative process and started to gather his friends to make his first short film, High Desert Hell (2019). Utilizing locations from local sources and keeping budget costs to a minimum, he completed his film for around $1,000. After this first successful outing that was on a learn-as-you-go basis and with a new script penned, Francis packed his gear and headed to Oregon to shoot his second short, The Gemini Project (2020). While neither of the shorts gathered major industry attention, they certainly sparked some interest. After a lengthy process of optioning and failing to gather necessary funds, a house was sold in favor of the budget for The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024). Before long, a stacked cast of genre-film crowd favorites were attached to the project including Jim Cummings (Thunder Road, The Wolf of Snow Hollow), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond), Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes, Doctor Sleep), Sam Huntington (Detroit Rock City, Not Another Teen Movie), Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil, Insidious: Chapter 2) and Richard Brake (Mandy, Batman Begins). The film premiered to a packed audience at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas and received rave reviews from moviegoers. Sam Raimi was so impressed with the film that he hand selected Francis to direct the latter of two upcoming Evil Dead installments. Aside from all the film work, he has also shot a handful of music videos for indie rock band, Mt. Joy including "Strangers", "Bathroom Light" and "Evergreen". He's also an avid collector of physical media and screen-used movie props including a piece of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) house.  Stay tuned for many exciting updates on his Evil Dead installment and pick up The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024), available on blu ray and streaming everywhere now!  If you enjoy the episode, be sure to slap the show with a 5-star rating wherever you're listening.  #KellensPettyTalkShow #TheLastStopinYumaCounty #FrancisGalluppi #EvilDead #RichardBrake

Our second episode focused on the films of Stuart Gordon brings us to FROM BEYOND (1986). Troy Guinn joins John Hudson and I as we flip on the Resonator to see the unseen, squishy horrors hiding in the dark. The uncut version of the film has only been widely available since the 2007 DVD release and we discuss some of the things that were spit onto the cutting room floor. The film sports a fantastic cast with Barbara Crampton and Jeffery Combs returning from REANIMATOR with the addition of Ken Foree they form a crime investigation team that gets far more than sane people are ready to accept. We examine the film's story structure and the clever scripting that allows for escalating weirdness without compromising the characters. The wild cinematography is discussed as is the use of colored lighting to represent the shift into visions of the hidden monsters all around us. We talk a little about the film's production as well as our reactions to the movie across the years. Hold onto your pineal glands and step into the attic with us, won't you! If you have anything to say about this film or any others that we have covered thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send them. We thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

The post #240 – The 90s according 2 Se7en appeared first on FromBeyond.se.

Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. And therein lies the beauty of his work. In this episode, we dive into three very different films, spanning three decades, each drawing from the strange and unsettling tales of this enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island. If you're not well-versed in Lovecraft's work, this is your chance to experience three adaptations—loose as they may be—that offer a glimpse into his nightmarish imagination. Films Mentioned in this Episode: Castle Freak (1995), Color Out of Space (2019), Creepshow (1982), The Crimson Blade (1963), Crying Freeman (1995), Demon Wind (1990), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Evil Dead (1981), From Beyond (1986), Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gods of the Deep (2023), Hatchet (2006), The Haunted Palace (1963), Humanoids from the Deep (1981), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Invisible Ray (1935), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003), Lovecraft Country (2020), Lurking Fear (1994), Necronomicon (1993), Re-Animator (1985), Return of the Living Dead III (1993), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Unnamable (1988), Vampyres (1974)

Metal Debate Album Review - The Madness Of Dr Ludwig Von Brainmatter (Dead Alive)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 20, 2024 5:19

Welcome back metalheads to a brand new episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. Its Xander back with a new album review. Today I will be talking about the Nashville based thrash metal band called Dead Alive and this is their sophomore record titled The Madness of Dr. Ludvig Von Brainmatter. The intro track sets the black and white monster movie vibe. That sort of retro feel is most likely what they were going for. That mad scientist and Frankenstein type of classic horror. This of course leads us into our first track "Exhumed" I love how the vocals for this song are a screeching whisper style. Halfway through the song we get a chug guitar riff that will definitely cause involuntary head banging. The next track "Re-Agent", its accompanied by a very well made music video so you should go give it a watch if you haven't already. The pacing of the music in this one has a slower tune but that does not subtract quality at all. If you want a fast thrash metal track, look no further than "Flip The Switch". The bass line played by Dedmen Walken is groovy and it perfectly eases you into this rager of a song. While I was listening to this album in my car the other day I was shouting along to the course. The words "Flip The Switch" will not only get stuck in your head but the non-course parts of the song will remind you a lot of old school Overkill. After that memorable track we have my personal favorite song on this album "Volt". I like this one a lot because it leans heavily into the death trash subgenre. It is without a doubt the fastest song on the record. Deadbeat did a fantastic job pounding away on drums for not just this song but nearly every song on this album. In fact, his abilities really shine on "No Signs of Life" as well. Once again I'm impressed by his drumming skills. "Hollow Man" ... Oh you know what? I actually almost bought that movie the other day from a used DVD store. I'm kicking myself for not but maybe I'll swing by later and dammit, I'm getting off the subject again. Yes, this next song has the same title of that old 2000 flick but I'm unsure if the lyrics have anything to do with the film. The lyrics aren't provided on metal-archives at this time. One song that I think would be awesome played live is "Fear ... Conditioned". The rhythm of it will get people's heads nodding for sure! The song "Gone Mad" surely doesn't disappoint either but after that one, we get the longest song on The Madness of Dr. Ludvig Von Brainmatter titled "From Beyond". The runtime clocks in at just over six and a half minutes. Definitely lengthy for a thrash metal track but as a Kreator fan, it doesn't bother me. Lastly we have "Live Wire" which serves as the perfect closer to this album. Remember how I said this album had a Frankenstein feel to it? Well this one begins with a mad scientist shouting "it's alive". As it should. Electrical shock is essential for reanimating corpses in a castle laboratory. The music itself has a mid-80s thrash metal that is reminiscent of Nuclear Assault. My final thoughts on this album is that it's very solid. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I'm usually quite picky when it comes to thrash metal. But when it comes to this independent release, I feel like their gimmick is useful in the way that it helps them stand out. Of course they are all very talented musicians too. I'll give my buddy and the rest of his band a 7.5 out of 10. The drawback for me is the studio production. Having listened to this album four times in a row, I can tell you that the sound doesn't seem to be as crystal clear as it should. I'm not sure if that was a creative choice to make the recording sound old and less polished. If they were going for the analog/listening to this through a cassette tape on an old boom box then cool. I personally like the sharper and cleaner sound of modernized digital. But I'm sure there are many thrash heads out there who will dig this great album even more than I did.

Re-Animator (1985), From Beyond (1986), and Dagon (2001) Bringing the works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft to the screen is not an easy task. Much of the horror Lovecraft talked about wasn't described or explained too much, leaving it up to the reader. But when director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and writer Dennis Paoli got together to adapt Lovecraft's 1922 story "Herbert West - Re-Animator" for a movie, they changed cinema forever. Not only did they show us more than Lovecraft would ever dream of, they created a perfect blend of outrageous horror, gore, and bizarre imagery that would immediately put them in the horror history books. The following year, they took another short story, From Beyond, first published in 1934, and showed even more strange, bizarre, and gooey things we'd seen before, going beyond then what the short story told us. Then 15 years later, these three deranged creators returned to Lovecraft to take us to a fishing village filled with very unusual citizens, in 2001's Dagon. While Gordon's filmography might not be filled with classic after classic, when he hit a home run, usually he was working with Yuzna and Paoli. Films mentioned in this episode: Black Gloves (2017), Color Out of Space (2019), Dagon (2001), Dust Devil (1992), From Beyond (1986), Halloween (1978), Hardware (1990), Lord of Tears (2013), Re-Animator (1985), Shrews Nest (2014), To Let (2006), Witching and Bitching (2013)

Body Horror represents a loss of identity or a transformation of self. Its terror stems from lack of control or defiance of the laws of nature and represents a large subgenre within film. These films are often special effects ladened and filled with disturbing imagery. Jerry & Matt look at two prime examples of this with Stuart Gordon's From Beyond from 1986 and James Wan's Malignant from 2021.
