Welcome to the People Hidden in History Podcast series, You will hear a brief preview of an upcoming podcast episode – to be recorded and released later this fall. This is to be a follow-up episode from August 2022, which was an interview with Mark Ludwig, Director of the Terezin Music Foundation. The episode focused on Viktor Ullman, a composer and music critic, who was a prisoner at the Terezin concentration camp. However, this upcoming episode will focus on the many talented women at Terezin (pianists, composers, educators). These women comforted and enriched the life within the walls of this concentration camp. The Robert Schumann piano piece you hear at the beginning and end, was known to have been played by women pianists at Terezin. To highlight these women, the Terezin Music Foundation – is excited to give them their due on the great stage of Symphony Hall in Boston at their next Gala Event on November 19th (details here). Do listen to the first podcast (link here), that will give a better understanding of life at Terezin, and how those living there were under constant threat of deportation to Auschwitz but also how music still could enrich their spirits.

Betty expressed the importance of being clear with one another. She shared that finding their values and purposes was not difficult. What was more challenging was understanding how they can all work together with the fact that they were all interesting and diverse people. They worked under collective leadership. They talked about collaboration, respect, professionalism and focus. People stepped up based on their strengths. Adjust yourself based on feedback - The writing process required a lot of writing and rewriting. When talking about your personal stories within a limited amount of pages it is important to condense information and be precise. Share your stories - Betty noticed a lack of leadership stories being told by black people, more specifically black women. Along with her team, she decided that they should be the ones to tell their own stories. It is important not to let other people tell your story for you, because they don't have that same lived experience. You need to share your own story in your own words. Your experience matters - Through the book, Betty hopes to ignite conversations. She wants people to reflect on the impact they wish to leave in the world. She wants people to be inspired to find their voices, take their space, and lead from a place of strength. Experiences should not be diminished, we need to share them. We all need to be more understanding and have more empathy. Afterall, we share the same universe. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) attended the Met Gala. An event that cost $30,000 a plate or $300,000 a table. A red Carpet Event/ fundraiser which raises money for the benefit of the Metropolitan. AOC is touted as a hypocrite; I argue she is not. But as I would say, she did the job, she was supposed to do. Whether or not you agree with her politics, her attending the Gala was to do what she intended to do. Which was call attention to the "Rules for thee but not for me" mentality. Larry elder didn't really lose. I believe he is on the Journey to be the First Black American Conservative Governor in 2022, which inspired me to talk about history. No one reads anymore. Alex Meadows is one of Perth's most fabulous hairdressers. She doesn't do your Nan's hair (though she would if your Nan was cool) but instead her IG showcases an array of delectable and delicious colours like rainbow ice creams. Squished together in a stretch limo, talking about hair and what do you do for a buck and suddenly I'm showing Alex my little guy's Instagram and he's booking his first ever gig performing alongside a whole bunch of professional performers. Because I am the ultimate dance mum. During that “what do you do for a living?” conversation, straight after Alex said she was a hairdresser, she said “but I'm running my first huge charity event next year” and I was fascinated. Who decides they can take something like this on with no experience of running events? What could possibly go wrong? And would she tell me if I asked her? I know there are plenty of you in events who have been hit hard by the last 2 years and plenty more of you who would love to do something like this, so Alex agreed to come on So Crisp and share it all – the good, the bad, and the ugly cries.

Each time I doubt, I meet another amazing woman running a growing business. And then I can't help it but bring another podcast to life. I continue my trip around the world and this time I reached Germany to speak to Constanze Walcher. Her business Glutenfreie Heimat exploded not because of Covid-19, but despite Covid-19, showing the resilience of some trends to the pandemic, such as gluten-free. Taste without limits Constanze is the founder and CEO of Glutenfreie Heimat, a company that produces and sells organic gluten-free baking mixtures and baked goods. It all started because Constanze had to eat Gluten-free and her mum did not find tasty alternatives for her. After experimenting for 12 years, she developed a great recipe, leading Constanze to start her business. I first met Constanze in London in my Charity's Gala Event. She was working at Burberry and for years, we did not connect again. When I found out about the business she had created, I knew I had to bring it to light in the podcast. Stirring in the bowl Constanze started Glutenfreie Heimat in 2017. She started with a second kitchen in her home and since then has learnt a lot. Including that glass jars are not the best way to ship baking mixture to people (despite being cute). The company has developed different products, including bread, bread rolls, pancakes, pizza, and flour mix. They sell mostly online with little advertising. The product was so good it grew by word of mouth. The gluten free market is expected to grow at 11% a year in the next 5 years, with Germany being the leading market, followed by the UK and Italy. The growth is driven by customers that have medical conditions but also those that prefer a healthier lifestyle. Mordor Research The Black Forest Lockdown As of March, the team was Constanze, her "right hand" (working part-time) and a student. When Constanze heard the first news of the pandemic, together with her husband she decided to stock up on raw materials. It was worth the early move as March was their strongest month in sales. Still, the yeast (one of the famous products and google searches of this pandemic) ran down until the very last day when they were finally able to order again. Talk about just in time operations! As they were preparing to go skiing, they stopped instead at her Mum's house in the Black Forest. As it turned out, they did not go back to Berlin until much later so the turmoil period was managed fully remotely. Whilst her "right hand" was very limited being at home alone with her 2 children, Constanze benefited from having a student with lots of free time that spent her day mixing and packaging. Chased to grow Until recently, Glutenfreie Heimat was selling mostly online, but recently, a major distributor sought their products on behalf of AlNatura, the largest organic brand in Germany. Overnight, Constanze had to seek new premises to increase production and is now interviewing every day as the company is rapidly expanding. With unemployment rising and students out of school, this turned out easier than expected (even if time-consuming). There is no remote working in production, so whilst the country stays away from another lockdown, Constanze will keep pushing for growth. Looking for more Constanze is not stopping here. She is expanding products and channels. As she studies a move to frozen products, an entire set of opportunities arises. There is a market of people that don't have the ability, time, or willingness to bake and prefer the frozen products. But more than that, restaurants and hotels want this product as well, and that changes the scale of the business entirely from B2C to B2B. The Home Office In the Black Forest, Constanze was somehow able to convince her children that sometimes it was work time and that was important that they remain quiet. I am still not clear on how she achieved it and I am still suspicious if they developed mischievous activities while Constanze was working in the "boathouse". I admit my kids were relatively ok if I told them 27 times in advance that Mummy was hosting a zoom call with 300 people and therefore nobody was allowed into the living room under no circumstances. But in all other Zooms, it was a free for all on whether they would show or not. In fact, as they started recognising some people they made a point of coming to say hi. As to recording of this podcast, it was always after hours! Corona-holiday During this time, Constanze mostly concentrated on being a mother above everything and that turned out an amazing experience. One of the effects on her and the children was that everyone became calmer. (no mother comes to the podcast without talking about calm or patience…) They grew closer as a family without running around all the time. It was, as she describes, the longest holiday ever. Constanze's Lockdown List Book: The Old House (German children book) Sport: Swimming Technology: Phone Lesson: Remember not to scream, and keep calm Word: Corona holiday Connect with us Check out Constanze's LinkedIn profile Visit Glutenfreie Heimat (yes, English version available) and follow them on Instagram or Facebook Join our free community online and on Facebook Follow me on Linkedin, Instagram or Twitter

SHOW #483 Merry Christmas Day! The BIG DINNER GALA EVENT!
Kent Skov’s L.A. Connection Comedy Theatre (LAC) continues its popular celebration of the incoming new year, which has been sold out every year for the past 27 years, with two shows featuring an all-star troupe of improv players. The schedule for December 31 was announced today by founder Kent Skov. This will be the club’s first New Year’s Eve in the new Burbank location. “This year’s celebration will have an 8:00 p.m. show for the amazing price of $25.00 and a 10:00 p.m. show for the ridiculous price of $35.00! “said Skov. He also noted that a limited number of combo tickets that provide entry to both shows are available for the bargain price of $50.00. The late show will include party favors in the ticket price. There will be a full bar on site. The theatre is also handicapped accessible. There is free parking across the street at Bank of America. Both shows run longer than LAC’s usual shows, and each is different with different casts composed of the celebrated club’s best players. They will include a mixture of award-winning movie-dubbing clips from LAC’s library of old movie classics, improv, and classic sketches. Skov also promises some surprising fun throughout the evening. The late show will include celebrity impressions, a take-off on the Dating Game, as well as topical and relationship humor. The shows are fast, furious and funny, in the style of “Whose Line it is Anyway.” In addition to the non-stop comedy, there will be several giveaways to guests. Fans of “The Walking Dead” will be happy to hear that a DVD of LAC’s critically acclaimed “The Night of the Living Dead—Dubbed,” which was created during the show’s limited run in spring 2006, will be one of the coveted prizes. And per their annual tradition, one lucky guest will win a ONE-YEAR PASS to the LAC’s comedy performances. L.A Connection Comedy Theatre will celebrate its 40th year in 2017, and plans are currently underway for a Gala Event to be held in February. Some of LAC’s alumni include: Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, Matthew Perry, Jon Lovitz, Shannon Elizabeth, Hank Azaria, Sharon Lawrence and Josh Groban. The legendary Spolin Players, now in their 53rd year, are making LAC their home.

CINDY ALEXANDER AWARD-WINNING SINGER-SONGWRITER Joins RoadNation for U.S. Tour – “Play it Forward” Campaign to Raise Money for Kay Yow Cancer Fund LOS ANGELES (April x, 2017) – Award-winning singer-songwriter, CINDY ALEXANDER, has partnered with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund (#Play4Kay) and RoadNation to “Play it Forward” this summer as she tours across the U.S. for her latest album, Deep Waters. In a unique and self-less manner, altogether outside the industry’s oft-alleged ego-centric persona, the proceeds from CINDY’s tour will go to benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which has already allocated over $5.2 million to cancer research. CINDY will kick off her “Play it Forward” tour on May 18th at La Mexicana in Gaithersburg, MD, ending this summer with a performance at the charity’s Gala Event on September 3rd in Raleigh, NC. As a Breast Cancer survivor, this is a charity very close to CINDY’s heart. “I was given a gift: Music. And I want to Play it Forward - play to connect, to inspire, to heal, and to cure. This summer I will be 3 years cancer-free. Through my work as an advocate for breast cancer awareness, I came across the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which has already donated more than 5.38 million dollars to research, and towards trials that are desperately needed for those living with metastatic disease. And they do this with only 7 employees, many of which I met last month in Raleigh. The proceeds of my tour this year go directly to their cause, which is my cause and my passion: ending cancer.” Cindy chose to use the new RoadNation platform to let her fans chart the course of her “Adventure with a Cause.” RoadNation allows artists to empower fans to decide where an artist will play by bidding on a city. Fans also have the opportunity to be a “Roadie” or “VIP,” with access to behind-the-scenes features along with many other perks. By purchasing Road Nation’s VIP/Roadie experiences, exclusive tour merch, and access to the platform’s exclusive music and videos, fans are helping to fund the costs of her travel. As a survivor of Breast Cancer, CINDY, an avid supporter of early detection as an Ambassador to BreastCancer.org, has solidified her fearless storytelling style, tackling the most intimate subjects in song. And Deep Waters is just a step on that powerful journey. As a performer, CINDY has won several prestigious awards including David Foster's/NBC Star Tomorrow, L.A. Music Awards Songwriter of the Year/ Independent Pop Album of the Year, All Access Magazine's Best Female Pop Vocalist, Just Plain Folks Song of the Year/Female Artist of the Year, L.A. Music Critic's Best Female CD ('12 & '14), Comeback Artist (after winning her fight against breast cancer ’14) and most recently Pop/Rock Artist of the Year (’16). CINDY ALEXANDER released Deep Waters, her 8th studio album, through Blue Élan Records last July. Deep Waters explores love in all of its forms— the passionate, sexual, the sacred and the maternal, even love that’s remorseful and misguided. The title track, about abandoning oneself completely to another, was the first song she wrote with acclaimed artist, writer and producer Colin Devlin, solo artist and half of the leading Irish duo, The Devlins. Blue Élan producers immediately recognized the duo’s creative chemistry and asked for a full album. CINDY ultimately wrote or co-wrote eight of the album’s 10 tracks (Deep Waters’ lone cover is a remake of Jann Arden’s “Good Mother”). Guitar World calls Deep Waters “an insightful collection that exposes Alexander as a fearlessly skilled songwriter, singer and artist in every sense of the word.” In her career, CINDY has shared the stage with John Hiatt, Bacon Brothers, America, Suzanne Vega, Joan Osborn, Rick Springfield, Beth Hart, Everclear, The Bangles, Edwin McCain, Marc Cohn, Howard Jones, Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul, Lisa Loeb, etc. She has performed on compilation cd's alongside Sarah McLachlan (Chilled Sirens- Water Music Records), Aimee Mann (Eclectic Cafe - Water Music Records) and Norah Jones (Sunday Brunch - Treadstone Records). CINDY also appeared on the soundtrack of Sugar & Spice (Trauma Records) and her music has been featured in films (Here on Earth, Smokers, Sugar & Spice, Dorm Daze II, People I've Slept With, My Trip Back to the Dark Side etc.) and TV (Party of 5, Chasing Farrah, So You Think You Can Dance, VH1/MTV). In this episode of the Red Man Laughing Podcast we take you inside the 6th Annual University of Toronto Indigenous Writers Gathering which took place on campus at First Nations House. We hear from David Treuer (Anishinaabe - Leech Lake, MN), Taiaiake Alfred (Kahnawake Mohawk) and Lee Maracle (Sto:lo Nation) as they talk about their works and how they connect to the land. The first part of the podcast brings you to David and Taiaiake's panel discussion - Developing Nationhood and Supporting Sovereignty Through Storytelling And Academia. In today's political climate we hear many Indigenous Peoples talk about the land in pragmatic or metaphorical ways - but - is the connection the land more practical than that? These authors bring us inside of their work in an often hilarious and insightful way. The second part of the podcast brings you to the Gala Event held on the Friday night of the Indigenous Writers Gathering and we feature the work of the incomparable Lee Maracle. Lee is one of the most prolific authors in Canada and her books are hauntingly beautiful, challenging and powerful stories from not only her own experience and point of view - but, also, from the land itself. As always, thanks for listening. Make sure you subscribe to the podcast to get new episodes sent directly to your Email or iTunes.

On THE FOOD SEEN today, Yael Raviv, director of the Umami Food and Art Festival, is joined by the event's curator, Ame Gilbert, and participating artist Terri Hanlon, as they ready themselves for Edible Architecture: Umami 2011 Gala Event on Monday, March 28th, a fundraiser to support future Umami projects. “ The Umami Food and Art Festival, was created in 2008 as a non-profit biennale event. It offers a meeting ground to people who use food as a medium and who present their audience with a multi-sensory experience in the dining room, or gallery space. The festival's objective is to open avenues of collaboration between these artists and culinary professionals and expose them to new audiences from both the art and the culinary worlds. Choosing food as a common thread allows Umami to present new ways to look at art and to integrate art into daily life. Umami offers an environment for non-commercial, time-based art and encourages artists who work with non-traditional mediums and forms.”
This episode describes the wonderful evening at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, with the first annual gala event called NOCHE DE MARIACHI. This was not a "battle of the bands." Rather, it was a community of mariachi bands in and near the Austin area for a celebration of the mariachis in central Texas. The quality mariachis that were featured and played their songs (which did not overlap with other pieces performed by other groups)-- - Mariachi Los Lobos - Mariachi Estrella - Mariachi Suroeste - Mariachi Relalmpago and there was a special solist, Rebekah Ramos, who was accompanied by el Mariachi Relampago, when she performed 2 songs, one of them being SOLAMENTE UNA VEZ. What a lovely piece and performed exquisitely well. There was a folklorico dance group called the Pan American Ballet Folklorico that performed 2 numbers--they opened the event with LA CULEBRA and ended the show with dancers in the aisles of the theatre as ALL the mariachis accompanied them to the piece EL SON DE LA NEGRA by Silvestre Vargas. Yes, there was also a group called Margaritas de Tejas that tried to perform some numbers. Even though the national fad for having all-female groups has reached Austin, this was the only group whose quality did NOT stand anywhere near the quality of the other mariachis. We tried to get a number from the CD of songs of Mariachi Relampago (which they were selling in the lobby, and of which I purchased) to be included in this episode. However, the Mariachi Relampago would not give us the permission to include this. Thus, we had to use a previously recorded live performance of the Ballet Folklorico Estudiantil of the Independent School Districts of San Antonio dancing to the accompaniment of various mariachis in the open air theatre in San Antonio, Texas, during the week-long festivities of the event called FIESTA. Still, the mariachi Relampago, Estrella and Suroeste (from San Marcos, Texas) provided a wonderful evening of dance and culture. This event even included a live wedding (that was called "Mariachi Surprise", in which 2 young people took their wedding vows as they were accompanied by the Mariachi Estrella. The finale was a traditional and powerful experience--as Mr. Bowie Ibarra, master of ceremonies, mentioned--that no gala evening of mariachi music would be complete without the performance of LA NEGRA. And, in this case, all the mariachis crowded the stage and the aisles to play that one song, together as a community of Mexican culture. Copyright (c) 2008, Matrix Solutions Corporation.
