There are many layers to liberation from domestic abuse. Each person's path is different and complex. Through the work of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, and its member Domestic Violence Resource Centers, survivors receive a comprehensive array of support and resources. DVRC advocates work closely with survivors to develop safety plans and reduce barriers that stand in the way of achieving safety. One program, The Liberation Fund, complements these services, enabling advocates to help in immediate and practical ways. This can be a key component of a survivor's ability to enact their safety plan and establish freedom. Since 2020, more than 800 survivors across Maine have benefited from the Liberation Fund. Many survivors who leave an abusive partner do so without the basic necessities that will allow them to provide for themselves and their children, such as clothing, food, and personal documents. Starting over can be further complicated when a survivor does not have furniture, appliances, or other items that help make a new house become a home. The Liberation Fund provides for these personal needs, offering survivors and their children immediate relief and support.Today I will be talking with Francine Garland Stark, the Executive Director of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence, Missy, and Maggie who have generously agreed to share the personal stories of their journey to liberation.Helpline Numbers for MaineStatewide Domestic Abuse Helpline: 1-866-834-HELPDeaf or Hard of Hearing: 1-800-437-1220National Helpline800-799-7233Links to Check Out:Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV) WebsiteDonate to the Liberation Fund and Maine Coalition to End Domestic ViolencePowerful Short Video and Information about the Liberation FundFollow Daughters of Change:Website:Facebook:InstagramLinkedInMarie's LinkedIn:Daughters of Change Podcast Producer: Sarah StaceySarah's LinkedIn Profile
I initially interviewed today's honorary Daughter of Change, Greg Lathrop, for the Never Been Old B4 podcast. As we delved into our conversation, I realized that this intriguing subject would appeal to all of you.Greg Lathrop is licensed as a Registered Nurse. At age 15, he experienced what he thought would be the moment of his immediate death. The transpersonal, mystical state of being he experienced transformed his perspective of consciousness and guided his choices regarding his “work” in this life. Accordingly, his more than 40 years of nursing experience has included serving within various healthcare realms: acute care, critical care, emergency care, air-medical transport, hospice, and integrative healthcare. Coinciding with his nursing practice, he was invited into a Traditional Indigenous Medicine apprenticeship, following his Teacher Will Rockingbear for more than 13 years until Rockingbear's crossing. He is now recognized as a Medicine Elder in the Way of Traditional Healing. We hope that you enjoy this sneak peek of the Never Been Old B4 Podcast. Today's Daughter of Change is 20-year-old Halle Roy. Born in and raised in Maine, Halle is currently getting ready for her second year at Southern Maine Community College where she is studying fire science and is part of a live-in program. Students accepted into the “live in” program live in area fire-EMS stations in exchange for being “on call” during specific hours. They have additional responsibilities and must provide their own meals. Live-in students complete fire+ EMS basic training and are paid for their emergency responses. The Live-In Program requires a high level of motivation and responsibility. Halle says -throughout my first year, I obtained my fire one and two and my EMT license. My father and stepfather are both firefighters so I found the same passion as them and I couldn't be happier. I have a little sister who also wants to be a firefighter paramedic one day, so being able to go through it as a woman in the fire service, I can lead her in the right direction. I hope that I can be a voice for other females who are interested in this career or really are just scared to put themselves out there because I was that same person.Links to Check Out:SMCC Public Safety Live-in ProgramFollow Daughters of Change:Website:Facebook:InstagramLinkedInMarie's LinkedIn:Daughters of Change Podcast Producer: Sarah StaceySarah's LinkedIn Profile

Once upon a time, people's perception of Girl Scouts was of girls singing around campfires, earning badges, and selling cookies. That is no longer the case! While girl scouts still do participate in these activities, they are also learning leadership skills to help with their careers. On top of that, financial literacy is a component of girl scouting that aims to help girls develop confidence in money matters.so they can learn to make sound financial decisions and develop a healthy relationship with money. That's why we thought it would be fun and educational to combine both of these topics and do a podcast focused on careers in the banking industry. And who better to do that with than our collaboration partner in the Passion to Action Series - First National Bank?Today I'll be talking with Kristen McAlpine, Corporate Engagement and Development Officer at First National Bank in Maine.Kristen is the 2023 winner of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Sarah Dubay Professional Service Award. Kristen has worked in banking for 18 years, rising through the ranks to the position she holds today. We'll discuss the trajectory of her career, how to harness the power of networking and mentorship, the benefits of a career in banking, and how the traditionally male-dominated banking field is becoming an opportunity-filled career path for women.First National Bank Links:First National Bank's WebsiteFirst National Bank CareersFirst National Bank Facebook - @FirstNationalBankMaineFirst National Bank Instagram - @firstnationalbankme First National Bank LinkedInKristen's LinkedInGirl Scouts of Maine Links:Girl Scouts of Maine WebsiteGirl Scouts of Maine LinkedInGirls Scouts of Maine FacebookGirl Scouts of Maine Instagram - @girlscoutsofmaineGirl ScoutsDonate to support Girl Scouts of Maine: www.girlscoutsofmaine.org/supportFollow Daughters of Change:Website:Facebook:InstagramLinkedInMarie's LinkedIn:Daughters of Change Podcast Producer: Sarah StaceySarah's LinkedIn Profile

Today's Daughter of Change, Marilyn Laken, is a woman who was ahead of her time in a male-dominated world - and with grit, determination, and a strategic mind - rose through the ranks of medical academia. After earning a BSN from the University of Md and a master's degree from Boston University in Maternal/Child Health Nursing.Marilyn, who enjoyed asking questions and experimenting with more effective ways to provide health care, decided to get a doctorate in biological anthropology to pursue an academic career with an emphasis on research. Health equity has always been a passion for Marilyn, so most of her academic work focused on how to improve access to quality health care for vulnerable populations such as low-income pregnant women and children, and members of the AME Church. This required working with state and national government agencies and Congress on laws and health policies to improve access to care and with professional organizations on changes in practice guidelines to better meet the needs of vulnerable women and children. Marilyn retired after working for 52 years and is now focused on learning more about the needs of aging people and identifying ways to reduce isolation and stimulate our brains.I'm excited to have the opportunity to converse with this wise woman who has helped to pave the way for the women who came after her. Resilient, Ready, and Strong! These words describe today's guest and Daughter of Change, Morgan. Morgan is a member of the Girl Scouts of Maine. At the ripe old age of 14, she is already honing her leadership skills and focusing in on her ambitions. What I loved most about talking to Morgan was hearing how she has learned new things about herself and the world, even when things don't go exactly as planned. When Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scouts in 1912, she brought girls together so they could explore new possibilities and the wonders of the world around them—and she wanted them to do it together. As I got to know Morgan, I realized that over a century later, these tenants still hold true. How do we create awareness of our own biases so we can examine them and how they impact our interactions and decision-making processes in the business world? This is the question we will be examining with today's guest and Daughter of Change, Ellen Miller. Ellen Miller is a pioneer in today's world. Like many women, her rise to prominent roles in male-dominated organizations has been a lifelong pursuit of blazing new trails, encountering setbacks, and achieving success. However, during the majority of her career, she was a change agent operating on cognitive autopilot, taking on information from her environment, making decisions based on her perceptions, and carrying the weight of corporate responsibility squarely on her shoulders. By 2017, after 25 years in the energy industry, Ellen left her executive role with an internationally owned company and began a new pioneering journey that changed her life. She now educates leaders on the benefit of cultivating greater cognitive awareness and relational intelligence and the importance of embracing a growth mindset for oneself for the benefit of others. She shares her pioneering stories and mindset insights with people across the United States as a Speaker and Leadership Coach.
