Watch This Episode On YouTubeCase Jernigan wins at so many things -- animation, gamemaking, filmmaking, and having without a doubt the best setting for recording a podcast episode. Normally, I edit out all background noise but with the birds chirping, I just could. not. do. it. His sound is such a mood. And I created special podcast animation art to celebrate such a fantastic artist.Case is a true Renaissance man who, not surprisingly, has found himself in Italy, and our discussion demonstrates the sheer breadth of talents that he brings to his art.His film, NOGGIN, now available to watch as a Vimeo Staff Pick, offers the same extraordinarily uplifting experience as this conversation with Case.In this conversation, we discuss:how the Slamdance screenings went;does he see himself as a filmmaker, in light of so many other artistic talents? "to me, they are all linked";on his website, Case talks about making art about "masculinity and illness." We talk about the rise of performative masculinity and how he views it relative to the art he creates.what we should know before watching NOGGIN and the thought process behind making the film;was it a way for him to work through his MS diagnosis, through his art? and how did he get from his diagnosis to where he is now?why Slamdance?; it must take a special film festival to get on a plane from Florence, Italy;what's next for him?Case's Indie Film Highlights: STOLEN KINGDOM (2025) dir. by Joshua Bailey; FISHMONGER (2023) dir. by Neil FerronLinks:Watch NOGGIN As A Vimeo Staff PickFollow Case On InstagramVisit Case Jernigan's WebsiteSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Watch This Episode On YouTubeThere's something so inspiring about a filmmaker who has a million different reasons for why he shouldn't be selected for this fellowship or that school, but goes forward boldly, anyway, and stays humble about it.And also a guy who would love the opportunity to teach at his film school -- NYU -- but I completely believe him when he says that he would quit if it got in the way of his feature filmmaking. That's the story of my guest, filmmaker Ward Kamel. Most recently, Ward was selected as one of four individuals and one writing team for the 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, but that's barely scratching the surface about the wild journey of this unique filmmaker. In this episode, we discuss:how he got started in filmmaking; originally, he thought he was studying science;his thoughts on the importance of attending film school -- he attended NYU -- and being a team player;whether film school's admissions department did their job, in his mind;his film, IF I DIE IN AMERICA, now available as a Vimeo Staff Pick;if that film is a template for filmmakers -- can you make a truly fantastic short film and get rewarded for it?;how filmmaking is unique in art as it involves more than just the artist's vision -- it's an art with a side of management;the story behind how he won a 2024 Academy Nicholl Fellowship and what the process is applying for it (it's a lot easier than other fellowships);the surreptitious way in which he was notified by the Academy;how he "doubled down" on screenwriting after graduating;the left-brain, right-brain-related importance of directing and screenwriting;the importance, as Vlad Nikolich noted, of subtlety in screenwriting and how he accomplished that in IF I DIE IN AMERICA;treating your audience "like they are geniuses; you can tell when the director thinks you're dumb";how "it's very impossible to make something for someone else" in the sense of creating a film you don't believe in;how best to capitalize on the moment of a viral video or a prestigious fellowship -- celebration isn't enough, it's "an invitation to share" and you should be ready with whatever's next when that moment comes;whether emerging filmmakers feel like they can make films about tough topics -- "I'm Muslim. I was raised Muslim. This is a queer Muslim film. I'm a queer Muslim filmmaker" -- and he concludes that filmmakers should go for it;why there is a noticeable lack of Arab and Muslim voices in independent film;where he goes to watch films from the area;what he would teach at NYU and if there were professors he felt he could relate towhat's next for this extraordinarily talented, fellowship winning, Brookyln-living, would quit his theoretical job at NYU for his feature film, filmmaker.Ward's Indie Film/Filmmaker Highlight: JOYLAND (2022) dir. by Saim Sadiq; MY FIRST FILM (2024) dir. by Zia Anger; Brit MarlingLinks:Ward Kamel's WebsiteIF I DIE IN AMERICA Vimeo Staff PickSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Reminiscent of Hemingway's sharp minimalism, paired with Kerouac's verve, Eat Your Heart Out tackles being alive in the here and now, with sterling writing and stellar voices. They have their own careers separately and we talk about both of them, but that producer-director relationship is such a unique thing and so I was keen to ask them about how they formed that bond and what their journey together has been like! Their short film MASTERPIECE premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2017 and was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Grace then went on to develop and produce DAWN IN THE DARK, written and directed by Runyararo, which was supported by BBC Films and BFI NETWORK and which premiered at BFI London Film Festival 2019 and has also been selected for festivals such as Encounters Film Festival, Underwire Festival and the Norwich Film Festival. Grace then produced Runyararo's BBC and Google Arts commissioned short SENSATIONAL SIMMY which was released and broadcast on BBC and BBC iPlayer and then Grace developed and secured funding from Uncertain Kingdom for Runyararo's documentary WHAT'S IN A NAME? which was released as part of an anthology of films aiming to provide a portrait of contemporary UK. Grace is originally from Perth in Australia, and has most recently worked on a number of films with producer Tracy O’Riordan at Moonspun Films; as a Production Secretary on Clio Barnard’s Ali & Ava, and then as a Producer’s Assistant and Assistant Producer, working in post-production on Hong Khaou’s Monsoon. As well as continuing to work with Runyararo, Grace is also currently working with Producer Fiona Lamptey as Post Production Supervisor on four Sci-Fi short films supported by Film4. Meanwhile Runyararo is currently developing her debut feature film and has recently finished directing block 2 of Netflix’s Sex Education, Season 3. We talk about their respective career paths, setting up their own production company, the learning curves along the way and how they’ve supported each other, we also chat about making shorts, transitioning to bigger projects, making career pivots and asking stupid questions. In this conversation I chat with actor, writer and director Khyan Mansley (https://www.youtube.com/Khyan).Khyan was one of the early YouTubers, launching his channel in 2009 and releasing sketches and vlogs. He soon built up a following and started to making bigger and more ambitious projects, which eventually led to him writing, directing and starring in his short film The Ministry, The short received a Vimeo Staff Pick and US network TBS (FYI I incorrectly said CBS in the intro) commissioned Khyan to write a script pilot based on The Ministry.Khyan talks about his love for video games and why if he was 15 now he’d consider becoming a pro-gamer. He explains why he got into making videos and how it changed the course of his life. The challenges he was faced with by attempting to make each project he was making on YouTube more ambitious than the last. Khyan breaks down the process of how his short film The Ministry led to him receiving representation from an agency and manager in the US and ultimately a script commission from US network CBS. He also explains the process of packaging, how agencies make a script or project attractive to a network. He describes what the transition was like going from making Youtube videos in his bedroom to finding himself pitching his show to a room full of US TV industry executives. We discuss Khyan's analytical approach to productivity, why he went travelling during ongoing negotiations with CBS and lots more! Heather Young and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Murmur, loneliness, solitude and quiet desperation, relationships and our desire for love, inclusion and connection with others. Trailer Synopsis:Murmur follows Donna, a sixty-something year-old who is scheduled to perform community service in an animal rescue shelter following a DUI charge. Over time Donna begins to relate to the abandoned animals that surround her and she forms a particular bond with a senior dog that she brings home to prevent from being euthanized. Donna begins collecting other animals from the shelter and buying them online, until her small apartment is over-run and her unchecked compulsion for connection ultimately causes her home and life to fall into further disarray. ‘It is important to me to tell the stories of older women and allow them to be complex, flawed and fully realized characters, the likes of which are rarely depicted in cinema,” says award-winning filmmaker Heather Young of Murmur. “Donna is a difficult character, but hopefully one that will resonate. Her loneliness and addictive nature cause her to act in ways that are at times counterintuitive and destructive but ultimately she is looking for connection -- and that is something that we can all relate to.’ About the Director: Heather Young is a filmmaker originally from New Brunswick now living in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After graduating from the University of New Brunswick and NSCAD University she made several short films. Fish played at festivals all over the world including Palm Springs Shortfest, the Vancouver International Film Festival, Vienna Independent Shorts and TIFF Canada’s Top Ten Festival. Robert Fisk and Yung Chang and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film This Is Not A Movie, fake news and journalism, our addiction to social media, complicity, a “dead language”, and something called, “apparent clarity.” Trailer Synopsis: For more than 40 years, journalist Robert Fisk has reported on some of the most violent and divisive conflicts in the world: Northern Ireland, the Balkans, and Syria. Yong Chang’s This Is Not a Movie captures Fisk in action—feet on the ground, notebook in hand, as he travels into landscapes devastated by war, interviewing both combatants and ordinary folk, ferreting out the facts and firing reports back home to reach an audience of millions. As corporations devour independent media, and language becomes a weapon, another less obvious battle is taking place. In an ever-accelerating 24-hour news cycle, the process of translating raw experience into incisive and passionate dispatches requires the determination to see things first-hand and the tenacity to say what others won’t. In his relentless pursuit of the facts, Fisk has attracted his share of controversy. But in spite of the danger, he has continued to cover stories as they unfold, talking directly to the people involved, whether that’s Osama Bin Laden or a young Palestinians woman whose father was recently murdered. Unlike the glamorous films that fueled Fisk’s early ambitions, justice rarely prevails, villains aren’t punished, and there are no tidy endings. As Fisk says, “the truth is that this is not a movie.” About the Director and Robert: Yung Chang is the director of Up the Yangtze, China heavyweight and The Fruit Hunters. He is currently completing a screenplay for his first dramatic feature, Eggplant. In 2015, Chang was selected to participate in the prestigious Sundance Labs for Eggplant. His award-winning short Gatekeeper is a Vimeo Staff Pick and distributed by Field of Vision, Laura Poitras’ curated online film unit. Chang’s films have screened at international film festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Toronto, and IDFA and have played theatrically in cinemas around the world. Up the Yangtze was one of the top-grossing documentary releases in 2008. In 2013, China Heavyweight became the most widely screened social-issues documentary I Chinese history with an official release in 200 Chinese cinemas. His films have been critically acclaimed, receiving awards in Paris, Milan, Vancouver, San Francisco, the Canadian Screen Award, Taiwan Golden Horse, Cinema Eye Honors, among others and have been nominated at Sundance, the Independent Spirit Awards and the Emmys.Chang's films have been shown on international broadcasters including PBS, National Geographic, ARTE, ZDF, Channel 4, HBO, TMN, NHK, CBC, Bell Media, TV2, SBS, RTS and EBS. He's received funding from major organizations like Sundance Institute, BRITDOC, Telefilm, SODEC, Hot Docs, National Film Board and Canada Council for the Arts. Chang is the recipient of the Don Haig Award, the Yolande and Pierre Perrault Award, and the Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award. He is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada. In 2013, he was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind the Academy Awards. Up the Yangtze and The Fruit Hunters were co-produced by the National Film Board and Eyesteel film. Robert Fisk is the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain, according to The New York Times. He is the Middle East correspondent of the London Independent and has won more than 20 major British and international journalism awards for his reporting from the region. He is the author of several bestselling books, including Pity the Nation, an eyewitness account of the Lebanese Civil War, and the historical volume The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East. In 2006, he was awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Prize for Cultural Freedom from the Lannan Foundation. First for The Times of London and then for The Independent, Fisk has been reporting from the Middle East for nearly 40 years, covering everything from the Lebanese Civil War in the 1980s to the Israeli invasions of Lebanon. He was among the first Western journalists to report the massacre at the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila. He also witnessed and reported from the Iranian Revolution (1979), the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1979), the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), the Algerian Civil War (1990–1998), the US-Iraqi Gulf War (1991), the Bosnian and Kosovo conflicts (1992–1995, 1998), the American attack on Afghanistan (2001), and the US invasion of Iraq (2003). He covered many of the 2011 Arab revolutions, especially Egypt, and is today reporting from the civil war in Syria. He is the only journalist to have interviewed Osama bin Laden three times—first in Sudan and then in Al-Qaeda’s secret camps in Afghanistan. Born in England in 1946, Fisk holds a BA in English and Linguistics from Lancaster University in the UK, and a PhD in Politics from Trinity College, University of Dublin. He has received 17 honorary doctorates from British, Canadian, and other universities. He is a frequent broadcaster and lecturer around the world. Fisk is the author of five books, including two works on Irish history, one of them an account of Irish neutrality in the Second World War; it remains a bestseller. Outside of the Middle East, Fisk has written and lectured extensively on the First and Second World Wars. He was the first Englishman to be invited to give a lecture to the families of Irish Catholics killed by British soldiers on Bloody Sunday. The Risks and Rewards of Instagram and How Parents Can Navigate Them Jonathan Green's latest short film, Social Animals, explores the great influence of Instagram on the younger generation. Instagram is currently the juggernaut of the social media field, which prompted him to make it the focus of his new film. Most teenagers today were not introduced to social media and the idea of rapidly sharing pictures with each other; rather this was the world they were born into. The goal of the film is to view the ways in which Instagram can bring people together and create a community, while also exploring some of the dark areas and hidden risks of the social media giant. Bullying is one of those hidden risks that teenagers experience via Instagram, or any digital communication for that matter. There seems to be this empathetic disconnect that comes into play once someone is writing from behind a screen. Digital bullies say things to people they would never feel comfortable saying directly to that person's face. When people are cruel to each other in the real world, they have to see a person's expression and recognize the cruelty they just inflicted upon them. The digital world removes that humanitarian aspect and empowers bullies to say the cruelest things possible, without having to process the pain they inflicted on another human being. There are, of course, other dangers within Instagram, but it may not be so simple to discount the social platform as a whole. After all, direct messaging on Instagram is not all that different than texting. Instead of writing off Instagram, which is simply a tool, it may be more beneficial to instill certain virtues in teenagers that will carry through to the digital world. Even still, the innovations of Instagram and other social media are outpacing our ability as parents to decide how to manage it. It takes longer to evaluate the psychological and spiritual impact that social media is having on our kids than it does to develop and introduce new communication tools. It's for this reason that parents need to decide if, and how quickly, they want to introduce their kids to these social media platforms. Episode Highlights: An introduction to the short film, Social Animals. Why does bullying seem to come so easily across digital media? How parents can combat some of the risks associated with Instagram usage. Picture via: Pxhere

Of course, anything that one values to the point of occupying the lion's share of his/her thoughts, time, talent, treasure, and energy can also be considered their idol. God will not compete with idols, nor can He bless a life that—for all intents and purposes—puts a greater value on the created than the Creator. Have our kids become the social animals that God never intended them to be? Shasha and I talk about her new film Take Light, the power crisis in Nigeria, poverty, corruption, Illegal electricians, suffering and smiling, hope and the legacy of colonialism. Watch the Trailer here. Synopsis Over 50 per cent of Nigeria's nearly 200 million citizens don't have access to electricity. For Africa's largest energy producer and most populous nation, that number is shocking. Those dependent on the unreliable grid are limited to a few hours of power a day at best. Taking matters into their own hands, many households illegally and dangerously wire their homes by tampering with transformers. While a bungling bureaucracy attempts to privatize the electrical system, an electrician risks his life on power poles, trying to provide for his daughter's education. His colleague in customer service has the more difficult task of going door to door collecting fees from disgruntled customers. The problems are complex and systemic, but director Shasha Nakhai delicately balances the big picture of a country trying to advance its development with the compelling stories of blue-collar workers attempting to make better lives for their families.  Biography Shasha Nakhai is a filmmaker based out of Toronto with Compy Films and Storyline Entertainment. Her award-winning films have screened at festivals and aired on TV worldwide, been released on iTunes, gone viral and been awarded Vimeo Staff Pick and Short of the Week. Her last film with partner Rich Williamson, Frame 394, was shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Short and was part of the CBC’s new Digital Doc Shorts initiative. It had its world premiere at the 2016 Hot Docs Film Festival, and went on to win Best Canadian Short at NorthwestFest, Best Documentary Short at the Rhode Island Int’l Film Festival, Best Documentary Short at the Sidewalk Film Festival, the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at the New Orleans Film Festival, and Best Documentary at the Charleston Film Festival. It was named one of TIFF’s Top 10 Films of 2016, and was nominated for 2 Canadian Screen Awards. Shasha was 1 of 8 emerging producers selected for the DOC Institute’s Breakthrough Program in 2015, and was awarded Telefilm Canada’s Pay It Forward Prize as part of the Hot Docs Film Festival’s Don Haig Award. Take Light is her first feature documentary. She also has a deep love for interactive storytelling, working as a brand ambassador for PlayStation for 8 years, and having been selected as the inaugural recipient of WIFT's Ubisoft Toronto Producer Mentorship program. She recently collaborated with DimensionGate on her first virtual reality project, Take Light VR. The landscape for short films is changing quickly. One might say we're entering a "Golden Age," where content is being taken seriously and you can even make money off of a five-minute video...if you get the right eyes on it. Traditionally, getting those views used to be all about submitting your project onto the festival circuit. This also came with the stipulation that you couldn't exhibit your project online or anywhere else if you wanted to make it in. That's not the case anymore.  Many aspiring filmmakers may not know just how valuable a Vimeo Staff Pick can be to your career. The distinction, which celebrated its tenth anniversary at SXSW this year, can lead not only to massive exposure but gigs from brands, producers and even music companies. You can really make a name for yourself if you're one of the 3-4 projects selected every day. Case and point, Jon Fusco's guests on today's show who have a combined 19 video staff picks between them: DANIELS, of Swiss Army Man fame, and Kirsten Lepore who's animated shorts in the style of Hi, Stranger led to jobs like creating an episode of Adventure Time, which later went on to win an Emmy. Together they join Vimeo's Head of Curation Sam Morrill to discuss how to get a Vimeo Staff Pick, what that Staff Pick can do for your career and how to best position yourself for a successful career after creating a short.
