The film American Fiction has been nominated for over two dozen awards, including five Academy Awards. Director Cord Jefferson is a seasoned writer who worked on acclaimed series such as Watchmen, Station Eleven, and The Good Place. He adapted the screenplay and wrote the script for American Fiction himself. Jefferson knew that he would also like to direct the film, although it would be his first time ever directing. Cinematographer Cristina Dunlap knew immediately after reading the script that she wanted to work on the film. “I think there's always a concern every time you work with a new director, just learning their style and how they work. But the second I sat down with Cord, I could tell immediately that he was going to be a wonderful person to work with because he is just very joyous and positive and excited, collaborative and open to ideas. And so when we started talking about the script, it was really more excitement. And, you know, he was very honest. He said, 'I've never even directed traffic before. So you're going to have to maybe hold my hand through some things or answer questions.' And I was completely willing to do that.” Fortunately, Cristina and Jefferson had about eight weeks of prep time in Boston, with only about 25 actual shoot days. Cristina likes to break down each scene psychologically, to explore visually what each character is going through. They scouted locations with the rest of the crew, and spent time figuring out the blocking so that they would have a concrete plan when the actors were on set. Cristina relied on the Artemis Pro app to map the location spaces which really helped create photo storyboards, figure out the lighting setup and plan Steadicam moves. She knew it would be challenging to be able to fit everything in on each shoot day, especially when there would be six or seven people in a scene. The beach house was an especially challenging location for lighting- it had dark wood walls and low ceilings. Cristina knew they wanted to able to see the ocean through the windows, but they couldn't afford to light with a Condor lighting rig every day from the outside. She had to pull out a lot of lighting tricks and build off the practical sources in the space. For one scene, an arborist helped the gaffer by climbing a tree in order to rig several gem ball lights in the branches. Cristina got her start in photography. She went on to shoot music videos for artists such as Coldplay and Lizzo, and was the DP of the 2022 Sundance Audience Award winning feature, Cha Cha Real Smooth. American Fiction is in theaters now. The film won the coveted Sundance Audience Award. Maryam's sophomore feature VIPER CLUB starring Academy Award Winner Susan Sarandon and Golden Globe Winner Edie Falco had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2018 and was released theatrically by Roadside Attractions.  Maryam's third feature. THE PERSIAN VERSION premiered in Main Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2023, where it won the U.S. Dramatic Competition Audience Award and The Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Casting directors are often seen as gatekeepers to opportunities in the industry - but does the multi-hyphenate approach help them? The answer is yes. We've all had audition horror stories - and whether or not it's the casting directors fault our own, it's never too late to live and learn. And as always, knowing yourself as a multi-hyphenate often is the answer to avoid those icky situations. Join one of New York's leading casting directors Stephanie Klapper as she breaks down and opens up about the casting director process. Though casting directors seem like distant people sitting behind tables, we have to remember they are human beings in search of connection, just as the actor is. So - when should an artist show up for their call of duty? What type of resume should you send? Do you want to see the chemical makeup of the multi-hyphenate artist or do you want to see that I once was in the ensemble of Cabaret? How can an actor make an experience better for the casting director? What purpose does the headshot serve in 2021? All these questions, and many more, are answered in this amazing episode. The multi-hyphenate is extremely useful to the casting director, because as Stephanie states, “Sometimes we don't even know what we're looking for!” The rules of auditioning changes daily - especially after experiencing a shut down like the industry has, which obviously will affect the future audition protocol. “It's a great time to get to know people,” Stephanie says, “in a way that when we're all running too quickly - we don't get to.” Actors aren't the only ones pivoting in the pandemic - you guessed it, casting directors are as well. As well as getting inspiring tips on how to apply agency to your auditions, get a behind the table look as to what a casting director is experiencing during this time away from normalcy. This episode also features a questions from a listener in the segment YOU GOT A QUESTION? where Michael answers a question sent to him through social media. 50% of our calories should be coming from fruits and vegetables. So, tell me why we use our land to produce less than 5% of fruits and vegetables in the United States? It's because it's 95% profit for big brands. Rather than growing the food here, they import food from cheap labor countries, but all that food has been sprayed a tremendous amount of chemical. As a customer, you're not saving  money with their method anyway; you're going to spend money later on a kidney dialysis, a heart transplant, on diazepam or whatever hundred drugs pharmaceutical companies are going to shove down your throat. - Josh Tickell JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUP | REVIEW THIS PODCAST  20% OFF ORGANIFI - USE CODE: WELLNESSFORCE How can healing ourselves through growing and eating more natural, nutritious foods also help heal the environment? On Wellness Force Radio 179, Film Director and Producer of documentaries such as FUEL and the upcoming Kiss The Ground film with Big Picture Ranch, Author of the book, Kiss the Ground, and Blogger of The Veggie Van Voyage, Josh Tickell joins us to share how we can reverse the effects of CO2 in the air by making changes on both a micro and macro level with our soil. From composting to voting with your wallet, you'll be equipped with the knowledge and tools to improve your carbon footprint on this planet. Kiss the Ground     Josh Tickell, one of America’s most celebrated documentary filmmakers and director of Fuel, has dedicated most of his life to saving the environment. Now, in Kiss the Ground, he explains an incredible truth: by changing our diets to a soil-nourishing, regenerative agriculture diet, we can reverse global warming, harvest healthy, abundant food, and eliminate the poisonous substances that are harming our children, pets, bodies, and ultimately our planet. Through fascinating and accessible interviews with celebrity chefs, ranchers, farmers, and top scientists, this remarkable book, soon to be a full-length documentary film narrated by Woody Harrelson, will teach you how to become an agent in humanity’s single most important and time-sensitive mission. Reverse climate change and effectively save the world—all through the choices you make in how and what to eat.   Listen To Episode 179 As Josh Tickell Uncovers: His experience working on organic farms as a WWOOfer. Where he got the idea of using a natural source instead of gas to fuel his van for the Veggie Van Voyage. What it was like to live next to an oil field growing up and the illness that his family was experiencing from all of the pollution.  The large number of cancer cases in Louisiana because of the oil production and witnessing his family members dying prematurely. His process of writing the book, Kiss the Ground, and what information is included in it. The reality of what the world looks like now as far as available land and fresh water. Why there's so much carbon dioxide in the air rather than in the ground and how we can reverse it. Why we don't look at measuring the environment by Parts per Million (PPM) anymore, but by gigatons or the measurement of mass. The problem with modern farming including pesticides, bees dying off, and the degradation of our soil. The fact that our agriculture industry got its start from the technology and science that came out of WW1. Why the health of the soil and our natural environment is so important for our own wellness. A basic test to see whether or not the soil in your city is healthy or not. How we can both heal ourselves and the soil on macro and micro levels. Why biology is the real answer to sustaining human life as the population continues to grow. The importance of composting and how people who live in big cities, apartments, or don't have much space can participate with vermicomposting. How we can be more proactive with growing our vegetables and restoring the soil on our properties. How the changes we make to help the soil can lead to improving the climate overall and restoring the ecosystem. Why we have the power in our own communities to get rid of pesticides usage. The fact that glyphosate is everywhere - in water, in the food, and in our bodies. Organic vs. Regenerative foods and what new food policies we could put in place. Power Quotes From The Show   "The new conversation is not about solar panels and wind; those things are happening, but they need to happen faster and we need more of that kind of green technology. The new conversation needs to focus on the fact that we have a 2,000 gigaton mass of carbon floating in the atmosphere. Where are we going to put that? It has to go somewhere." - Josh Tickell "We're basically dirt on legs. Roughly 50% of our cells are not human cells, but microbial cells and the same microbes that also live in soil. A handful of healthy soil has more living organisms than all humans who have ever lived." - Josh Tickell "If you are experiencing problems, one of the first things that this new wave of medical science will tell you is to increase your gut bacteria. So, how do you do that? The real gut bacteria actually comes from the soil. If that good gut bacteria is not in the soil, then it's not in your food and if it's not in your food, then it's not going in your gut." - Josh Tickell "Every time you eat, you make a political decision. So, we vote 3 times a day and what we're voting for is an entire system. This is a chain reaction that begins with a calorie that we consume, but it ends with a farmer or a rancher and a plant or an animal. If that plant or animal is building soil, then you're voting for a future of plenty of food for all people." - Josh Tickell "Food is politics Food is power. Food is activism. Food is life. Food is medicine. Food is nutrition. Food is reversing global warming. Food is your access right now. Aired 03/10/09 Growing up amongst the oil refineries in Louisiana, JOSH TICKELL experienced the impacts of dirty oil processing at a young age. After watching members of his family suffer from pollution-related cancers, Tickell began a lifelong quest to find sustainable, clean energy sources. In 1997, TICKELL set out on the road with a biodiesel powered "Veggie Van" and a video camera and began filming what would eventually become known as FUEL, the 2008 Sundance Audience Award winning documentary film that investigates the possible replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy. Over the course of his 11 year journey, TICKELL traveled the world going to over 25 countries, authored two books, founded a nonprofit organization, and jumpstarted America's biodiesel movement. "Fuel" is a vital, superbly assembled documentary that presents an insightful overview of America's troubled relationship with oil and how alternative and sustainable energies can reduce our country's -- and the world's -- addictive dependence on fossil fuels. The film's structure is built around director-narrator Josh Tickell's personal journey of enlightenment, which started in childhood after moving with his family from idyllic Australia to murkier Louisiana, where he came to realize the oil-rich environment was being ravaged by the omnipotent petrochemical industry. Later, as a young adult, he spent 11 years crossing the country in his vegetable oil-powered "Veggie Van," promoting biofuels and compiling footage for what would become this impressively comprehensive film. The events of Sept. 11 and Hurricane Katrina factor in both visually and thematically, providing provocative anchors for the movie's indictment of what Tickell believes is the Big Oil-cozy, ecologically indifferent Bush administration. Johnny O'Hara's WGA Award-nominated script doesn't dwell on muckraking, however; it's more focused on broadly inspiring viewers than preaching to the converted. Interviews with a wide range of environmentalists, policy makers and educators, along with such "green" celebrities as Woody Harrelson, Sheryl Crow and Larry Hagman offer serious fuel for thought -- as well as for action. Smartly animated interstitials, memorable archival material and a lively soundtrack round out the fast-paced proceedings. www.thefuelfilm.com
