Last Saturday was our favorite beer fest of the year. Good Word Brewing's Little Beer Fest. This event brings the best of the very best of low ABV beers to Duluth, GA each Spring. It's been an adventure in previous years with weather ranging from scorching hot to sleet and snow, but this year gave us beautiful sunny skies and temps in the 70s.We love little beers. Pilsners, low alcohol stouts, English Ales, bring it on. It's great to attend an event where you can try nearly every beer and still keep your senses. We did out best to make the rounds. For the show this week we sat down with Todd Boera of Fonta Flora Brewing and Jason Glunt of Salud Cerveceria. We chatted a good bit about what makes a good tap list and low alcohol beers, of course. We talk about adding fruit to beer and Todd tells Tim why his opinion on the matter is wrong, in the nicest way possible. We talk about breaking out of a mold of being known for a certain style of beer when you brew across the spectrum.Jason shares his Michelada lager with us, and it's damn tasty, so we talk more about that cocktail and the Mexican Ashtray (New to me. Must try it.) and we talk about staying small and brewing great beer.Keep an eye out in years to come for Little Beer Fest. In a time when festivals and bottle shares and beery get togethers in general seem on the decline we think this fest has the magic sauce to be something special. If you come next year, be sure to stop by and say hi, cause we'll definitely be there. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! We set out to explore the middle ground between N/A and the big, boozy imperials and extra-hopped beers that helped make American craft beer famous, and figure out if it offered any clues as to where non-alcoholic beer could be headed. While IPAs and the like aren't going anywhere, in the traditional brewing world there's undoubtedly been a movement toward lower gravity lagers, pilsners, English ales and related styles that dare to come in at 5% ABV or lower, at least inching a bit closer to their under .5% counterparts. We start our episode sitting down with the creator of Duluth, Georgia's Little Beer Festival, having recently celebrated its 4th iteration this month. Todd DiMatteo is also the owner/brewer of Good Word Brewing & Public House, which itself focuses on these low gravity styles. Similar to a few other festivals that have popped up in recent years to focus on lighter brews, Little Beer offers festival-goers the opportunity to sample hordes of beers that won't knock you over with alcohol, which may go against some perceptions of a beer festival. At the event we also talk with brewers and experts from Lupulin Brewing, Wren House Brewing, and The Whale Craft Beer Collective. All shared their own perspectives of non-alcoholic beer, where and how it's going for them, and whether there may be an intersection of these movements within an overall trend toward moderation in craft beer consumption.

The story of homebrewing and craft beer is intertwined. Ask many craft brewery owners how they got their start, and you'll probably hear about their homebrewing days—how it sparked their love of beer and eventually led them to turn their hobby into a career. However, homebrewing is only one part of going pro, and there are many more skills needed to open and run a brewery. Ryan Lavery, owner of Widowmaker Brewing, got his start brewing beer in his garage. A series of serendipitous moments, including a Craigslist ad, eventually led him to open his own brewery in Braintree, Massachusetts in 2017, and another location in Allston-Brighton, a neighborhood in Boston in 2023. Both locations reflect Ryan's love for music with his second location being described as a place with “intergalactic, spacey, stoner rock” vibes. In this conversation, Ryan shares how he didn't really know anything about opening a brewery and how those first decisions—like how they set up the brewhouse—still affect him and his team today. You'll hear Ryan discuss the distinction between the opening of his first taproom and the second one, as well as how the brewery discovered its identity and how that knowledge influenced the design of both locations, starting with the second. We also spend a little time talking about the special places he's visited in Atlanta while on business for the brewery, including a previous podcast guest, Todd DiMatteo, and his brewing company, Good Word Brewing.

From the moment I stepped into Good Word Brewing in Duluth, I was impressed. The space is a take on old-world style with warm wood and plush booths—it's comfortable, cozy, and looks like it's been there for decades even though it's fairly new. It's a place where you can settle in for a long while, and you'll want to because the food and beer are so exceptional that lingering is a pleasure. Todd DiMatteo, the owner of Good Word, has been at the helm since its opening in 2017. We first met in 2019 when I was working on a story highlighting the city of Duluth, and over the years, I continue to be impressed by his dedication to quality, community, and hospitality. It shows up in every aspect of the business, but especially his Lagers, which are clean and crisp and have enough flavor to keep your palate engaged without overdoing it.  With their sixth anniversary approaching, I thought it would be a good time to catch up with Todd and reflect on everything he's been able to accomplish over the years. You'll hear him share some of his stumbles along the way and how he keeps himself engaged as a brewer. We also talk about why so many of the beers on his menu are decocted, how he balances his beer descriptions for beer geeks and novices, and his approach to beer events.

Our beer fest tour continues...Last weekend we took our happy selves to Duluth, GA for the Les Bon Beer Festival hosted by our good friends at Good Word Brewing.Good Word always puts on a great event and this highly-curated selection of brewers and oyster farmers was no exception.  We enjoyed a variety of saisons, mixed fermentation brews, and oysters as we chatted with some of the events participants. We always love to learn more about things we don't know about.  Ed Mera of Mera Brothers Oysters joins us to drop some general knowledge on oysters, the impact of hurricanes on oysters, green gills, and merroir.Averie Swanson from Keeping Together tells us about her brewery and the journey from Texas, to Chicago, to New Mexico while educating us all on mixed culture beers.  We get a shot of Underberg to keep our digestion in check, and discuss the wonders of Malort. There are a few people we know well and always have good conversations with.  Orpheus Brewing's Jason Pellett is one of those people.  Jason's been on the show a handful of times over the years and was one of first guests wayyy back in 2016.  Jason recently closed his taproom in Atlanta and is in the process of moving to Amsterdam where he'll open a much smaller brewery, The Hollows, thanks in part to more friendly brewing laws.  We talk with Jason about these changes, the "protections" of the three-tier system, and why everything is so damn expensive these days.  FYI... even though the taproom is closed you can still find Orpheus beers at retail and on draft thanks to their partnership with Bevana. Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Celebrating the love of low ABV beersLast year's Little Beer Fest provided unusually cold temps in Duluth, GA with a bit of "wintery mix," aka rain, snow, and sleet.  Fortunately we didn't see a repeat and this year's event provided plenty of sunshine and temps in the 70s.  Perfect weather for enjoying some low ABV beers.  Huge shoutout to Todd DiMatteo and Good Word Brewing for hosting a great festival. Matty Hargrove - Blackberry Farm BreweryAs we sipped our way through the festival we talked with Matty Hargrove from Blackberry Farm Brewery.  He brought us Bloody Marys so w were off to a good start.  Matty talked about the farm and the brewery and doing things (brewing, food, service) with intention.  We reminisce about the Nuit Belge festival and how much we enjoy their Classic Saison.John Holl - All About Beer & Steal This BeerFresh off his Lager Panel at Little Beer Fest beer journalist John Holl joined us to chat.  When asked if we were in a lager moment John pauses to remind us that lagers have been king in America for many years, and craft lager is catching up.  We also discuss the rise of hazy IPAs and how it coincides with the popularity of Instagram and other photo and video sites where image is more important than quality.  On the quality note, many craft brewers are focusing on classic European and German lagers where nuance is more important than all that juice. You can hear more from John, and Augie Carton, on the Steal This Beer podcast.Lisa Allen - Heater AllenHeater Allen was an early entry into craft lager with their brewery coming up on 15 years.  Their taproom is currently undergoing renovations and will soon feature beers from a fun side project, Gold Dot Beer - a joint venture with Wayfinder Beer's Kevin Davey, the creator of the Cold IPA.  Gold Dot will bring IPAs and English styles to the taproom.  Lisa also shares the unique aspects of brewing beer in Wine Country as we ask about wine barrels and grape must in beers.Augie Carton - Carton Brewing & Steal This BeerChatting with Augie Carton was a great way to wrap up the show.  He now holds the record for the most swear words in a segment.  We should get him a trophy.  Augie shares how much he enjoyed hThanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! The CDC definition of a parasite is: an organism that lives on or in a host and gets its food from or at the expense of its host. They're not necessarily out there to completely destroy you- at least not immediately. Instead they want you to go on living your life, so that they can leach as much as they can while they get fat and happy, hopefully without you even noticing. And that's exactly how we feel about crappy financial products except they're not feasting on your blood, they're feasting on your dollars. Their ability to thrive comes at your expense and it's abundantly clear that these crappy financial products don't have your best interest in mind. Todd DiMatteo never intended to head up the production side of Good Word Brewing and Public House (https://goodwordbrewing.com) in Duluth, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. However, after a rocky start with a previous brewer forced him to quickly step up to the brewdeck, he embraced the role with verve. Thankfully, his homebrew experience plus more than a decade serving beer at Atlanta's legendary Brick Store Pub provided a palate and a point of view—two things that he's leaned into while further developing Good Word's beer program. Small beers are a big deal for DiMatteo. Through collaborations and core brews, he routinely plays across the beer map—from “petite IPA” to Czech-style dark lager and English-style bitter. In this episode, he talks about the challenges and techniques to brewing small beers, including: sharpening critical faculties to focus on constant improvement finding inspiration in source material for beer styles staying respectful of style and naming conventions, in part to keep styles alive and vibrant key points for maximizing character and minimizing detracting notes in small beers the value of decoction in low-ABV beers evaluating ingredients and selecting them for flavor using multiple lager and ale strains while remaining efficient from a production standpoint spunding for natural carbonation And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): For nearly 30 years, G&D Chillers has set the mark for quality equipment you can rely on. Beers don't have to be big to be beautiful Last weekend we headed over to Duluth, GA to party with our friends from Good Word Brewing as they celebrated the beauty of small beers. The festival had brewers from all over the country offering up beers under 5% ABV.  There were plenty of lagers as well as some saisons and grisettes, sours, and even some porters and stouts.  In the day of TIPAs and double-digit pastry stouts it's nice to celebrate the drinkin' beers.  We've been preaching Pilsners for year; we knew others would eventually come around. Fighting our best against the DJ that I swear aimed a speaker right at us, we sat down to chat with a few of the brewers at the event.  We talk with Ryan and Todd from Good Word about how the fest came to be and why they wanted a festival of all low ABV beers.  Joran and Shawn from Halfway Crooks Beer chat about their love for lagers and the cult following their LAGER LAGER LAGER LAGER merchandise has. We ran into Crooked Run's Jake Endress who joined us early this year and talked with him about small beer and small wine and Andrew from Thin Man sits down to talk macro lagers and the interesting bowel movements of the wombat.  Enjoy

Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was a huge success It was an unusually warm day for the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and this brought with it some crazy weather.  As attendees filled Bold Monk Brewing to sample the cask ales the rain started coming down strong and with about an hour left the hammer dropped.  The parking lot flooded and the very well-covered patio was drenched, and finally, the power went out.  Fortunately, we had completed our show taping but it did cause some chaos for the Bold Monk and cut a few festival-goers off from their cask ales a bit early.  Even with the craziness, I think everyone had a great time. This is our 4th year partnering with Brewtopia Events for ACAT and we kept our tradition going by speaking with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about the event and the ever-changing world of cask ales.  We also spoke to a few of the breweries currently under construction in Georgia that we hope to see debut in 2020. Social Fox Brewing & Storey Time Construction | We didn't have enough mics to get the whole team on with us but they all came out to support the cause.  Mike Greene joined us to represent Team Social Fox to talk about their brewery coming to Norcross.  Anthony Storey joins us from Storey Time Construction as well to discuss building out their brewery and some others that are in the works. Sports bars and chain restaurants are a dime a dozen, even in Atlanta. But today, we’re sitting down with a couple small business owners who are trying to take the corporate cookie cutter model and turn it on its head. Todd DiMatteo and Ryan Skinner are owners at Good Word Brewing and Public house in Duluth, and they want to replace the monotony of the chain with a unique look and feel, and some good ole fashioned friendly conversation.

What an amazing event!  If you haven't been to one of the 13 iterations of the Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting, then you're missing out. Owen Ogletree, owner of Brewtopia.com, puts on the event every year at the Prado in Sandy Springs. This year's version featured more than 60 casks of unique and creative beers from Georgia, national and international brewers!  We took advantage of our attendance at ACAT to drink some amazing beers (of course), but also to get updates on a few breweries and brewpubs in planning.  First on the list was Mitch Steele. The former brewmaster for Stone Brewing is working with his partners to open up a brewpub on the Atlanta beltline sometime late in 2017. We spoke with him about the plans, and the reason why they picked Atlanta.  Next, Owen took some time out of his busy day to talk about casks. What they are, the history involved, and why they are so much more nuanced than "normal" tapped beers.  In our third segment, we speak to Matt and Lauren Curling, the husband and wife team behind Roswell's Variant Brewing Company. Also planning a 2017 launch, we talk about how they got started in craft beer (hint: it wasn't Matt at first!) and the trials and tribulations of starting up a new brewery.  We also talk with our great sponsors, Your Pie Perimeter, about their upcoming Second Anniversary party.  Ryan Skinner and Todd DeMatteo joined us in the fourth segment. Ryan and Todd are planning a new brewpub, Good Word, in craft beer starved Gwinnett County. We talked about starting up a new brewpub in downtown Duluth, as well as their idea for bringing the comforts of home to a brewpub. Finally, we were lucky enough to grab two of the world's foremost experts on cask ales.  Des de Moor is a London-based beer judge and writer; and Steve Hamburg is a Chicago-area writer and beer judge. Both are cask experts, and we talk about the cask movement in the United States and what makes a great cask ale. Next week, we'll be cidering it up with the folks behind Mercier Orchards. Thanks for listening, and don't forget...drink local!
