Today I welcome Paulette Kennedy to discuss Queer Representation in Gothic. Her new book, THE ARTIST OF BLACKBERRY GRANGE is out today, and like all of Paulette's Gothics, it includes queer characters. We chat about how queerness was once subtext, and how it's evolved over time, and we give some great book recommendations that reflect this evolution. I've added any of these titles that are still in print in my Bookshop if you want to support my show as well as independent bookstores nationwide. Let the Bodice Hit the Floor

The bodice ripper is not only stranger than we suppose, but stranger than we can suppose. (With apologies to JBS Haldane.) This episode, we look at how the bodice ripper emerged, glistening, out of the primordial soup of its various predecessors (Gothics, historical epics, family sagas, and coming-of-age stories) only to beget progeny of its own, which in turn begat many, many more--some of which now bear almost no resemblance to the bodice ripper. CONTENT NOTE: This episode contains discussions of sexual violence. The texts we discuss: The Old School/First Wave: 1972-1984 The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss: The big bad mama who kick-started it all. Also mentioned in the first episode. Sweet Savage Love by Rosemary Rogers: Featuring Ginny and Steve, who are not, contrary to what their name suggests, middle-aged swingers from the 1970s. Devil's Embrace by Catherine Coulter: The bodice ripper that scarred all of us. The Black Lyon by Jude Deveraux: Kicked off the epic Montgomery/Taggert series, which encompasses 33 books and counting. Second Wave: 1984-1994 The Windflower by Laura London (Sharon and Tom Curtis): A gentler, kinder bodice ripper! No rape, with misogyny for flavor instead of the main course. Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught: Yes rape, but also: a lot more hero interiority, and a somewhat more gormful heroine. A crucial bridge book; the two that followed (Once and Always and Something Wonderful) were fully in the second wave: no rape, with the hero's point of view getting equal time on-page as the heroine's. Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey: Utterly unmemorable, except for the incredible cover. BONUS: Savage Thunder by Johanna Lindsey, which is also utterly unmemorable except for one Particular Scene, and one Particular Scene only. Not a Bodice Ripper But.... Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of Romance, edited by Jayne Ann Krentz: Collection of essays by many of the biggest names in historical romance that collectively talk about the appeal of the genre, the place rape has in it, the roles heroes and heroines play in the reader imagination, and the direction the genre was headed. Responses and Reworkings: 1994-2005 Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase: Inverts every single bodice ripper trope with great glee and verve. Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas: Lots of attempted rape, but...not by the hero? The hero STOPS the rapes? What's going on here? What happened to our bodice rippers?? To Have and to Hold by Patricia Gaffney: It's like Gaffney went, oh. Oh. You want a libertine hero? You want a true rake? Here. I'm gonna give you a rake. I'm going to show you exactly how repulsive and empty yet strangely compelling he is. And the result is stunning and harrowing.

Squandering his wealth and inheritance, he is ultimately banished and while witnessing a horrible shipwreck he finds himself face to face with a creature, some monster who offers him a way out of his current predicament. In this episode continue in the realm of the Gothics, although now we follow down the path of the ghost story. “The Ash-tree” by M.R. James is a curious tale beginning with witch trials and ending in perhaps their unintended consequence. A woman is accused of witchcraft, of going to an ash tree and clipping the branches, and is condemned by a first hand account from the owner of the estate. At her hanging, she utters an ominous phrase and soon after the owner is found dead in his room by some vile arts. Two generations later, in the same room, scrapings and scratchings on the window pane thought to be the ash tree disturb our lord of the house when he too meets an untimely demise. Only when the ash tree is investigated do we find the cause of such horrid ends. CONTENT WARNING: Arachnophobes, tread carefully. What do you do when the higher Adirondack elevations are muddy, wet, and fragile and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation asks hikers to consider remaining below 2,500 feet in elevation to let the peaks dry? Hike to the half way point just below 2,500 feet on the originally-planned hike and then use the rest of the afternoon to jump off some cliffs, obviously. Spontaneity feeds adventure and curiosity and this change of plan ended up being just as fun as the original plan would have been. The initial plan for friends Neil, Rose, Andrew and myself was to conquer Mount Colvin and Blake Peak via Lake Road off of the Ausable Club. We decided to still hike in this way to hit Indian Head, one of the Adirondacks' more beautiful and iconic sights. Map of Route to Indian Head (out of Ausable Club) We started the day off parking at the far Ausable Club parking lot located at the "P" in the above map (free lot) and hiked past the always beautiful Ausable Club towards the huge timber AMR gate to Lake Road. This access point serves as a means of getting to the Great Range including the Lower and Upper Wolfjaw, Armstrong, and Gothics  and the edge of the Dix Mountain Wilderness including Mt. Colvin and Blake. When we signed in at the check-in, a post-it note said "muddy, bugs are bad, go home." Knowing that we would still be below 2,500 feet in elevation and that a decent portion of the hike would be along the access road, we began walking. This was the soothing start of the first part of the day - a part that would be filled with a timber bridge in the woods and lots of waterfalls. When TLC tells you "Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls", they are wrong. Definitely chase waterfalls. Totally Appreciate a Nice Bridge in the Woods Waterfalls....Waterfalls Everywhere. And Neil. Chasing Waterfalls Once we started to gain in elevation, Indian Head quickly approached. This is not a super intensive hike, but the rewards are incredible. As you get close to Indian Head, there is a junction with a branch to an outlook, which we eagerly took. This was the first taste of views. The Outlook is Certainly Worth The Exploration Neil and Andrew on the Outlook We made short time at the outlook knowing that Indian Head was right around the corner. We were ready to sit down, snack, and take in the Indian Head views for a little while now that we had our first taste of the lush greenery in the mountains along Lower Ausable Lake. Boom. We made it. Indian Head Required Candid Pose (Photo Credit: Rose) View Looking North from Indian Head We climbed around the rocks for about a half an hour (it only took us about 2.5 hours to get to Indian Head). This is a great spot if you're looking for a moderate hike that will allow you plenty of time to snack, eat lunch, and soak in the views. I imagine Indian Head is majestic at sunrise and sunset as well and wouldn't be too difficult to get to to experience them. We took a slightly alternate route back to Lake Road, cutting down as soon as possible as we left Indian Head. This allowed us to check out the awesome dam at the end of Lower Ausable Lake. Sweet! Dam at the Edge of Lower Ausable Lake From this point on, we took the gravelly Lake Road back to the Ausable Club and eventually to the car. Surprisingly, the black flies weren't nearly as bad as we thought they were going to be (maybe due to the weather?). We were warned ahead of the hike that "the black flies are thick and chewy this year. Prepare to give blood." Nice!...very descriptive indeed! We were prepped for Armageddon but never really encountered it. With how wet many of the areas in the high peaks are right now, I'm not surprised that other areas may be a war zone. Anyways, we finished the hike around 1:30pm and still had the entire afternoon to explore, so naturally we went cliff jumping. None of the others had been to Split Rock Falls on the way to Elizabethtown, so that's where we went.

On this month's episode of Work of Human Hands, we will be discussing the results of the groundwork that was laid out in last episode, where we discussed the idea of theological makeover of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass as an assembly. With all the groundwork in place to radically re-make the liturgy, now we focus on what those re-made aspects resulted in as it relates to the externals of both the Rite of Paul VI itself, as well as the externals of art, architecture, and furnishings in the sanctuary. Have you ever walked into a Novus Ordo church and felt like you had walked into an abandoned airplane hangar? Ever had any trouble finding the tabernacle? How about stained glass windows depicting nothing? Was it missing statuary, stations of the cross, and a sanctuary lamp? These results were not the actions of "rogue bishops" as we often are told, but were specific instructions in both Sacrosanctum Concilium, the instruction Inter Oecumenici, and specific directives from the Bishops' Councils; who were becoming drunk on their newfound deregulated powers bestowed upon them by the directives of Vatican II. We will discuss the monumental change of versus populum, or mass facing the people, compared the ancient practice of ad orientum, or facing East. Contrary to popular propaganda of the innovators, this was not a return to antiquity, but a complete break with tradition which went back to the earliest stages of the Church and was spoken of by St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and others. Father will talk about this "primitive Church" fraud that was concocted by the innovators, namely the usual cast of characters of Anibale Bugnini, Louis Bouyer, and Josef Jungmann, but also another Roman Liturgist, Father Alessandro Pistoia. If you are wanting to know what the mechanism of action was and what edicts were issued to cause our beautiful sanctuaries to be stripped of their splendor, this episode is for you. If you are wondering how the vertical dimension of Catholic worship to God with its theocentric focus changed to a horizontal dimension of Protestant worship with its anthropocentric focus, Father will explain it. We will talk in great detail about the furnishings inside a Catholic Church versus a Novus Ordo Temple, the peculiar layout called for by Fr. Pistoia and the disturbing connection to freemasonry. Lastly, we will discuss the attempts to "spruce up" the Rite of Paul VI as we saw in the mid-2000s under Benedict XVI with his penchant for dragging the elaborate baroque mitres, the neo-Gothics statuary and jeweled chalices, the elegant fiddleback chasubles and tried to give the appearance of continuity to the Pauline Rite. Father explains why this simply does not work, and why the externals suited for the Tridentine Rite simply are alien to the Novus Ordo. The potboiler Gothics of V.C. Andrews were beloved by adult women... and their tween daughters. Both Jack and Kate are new to the author's infamous tales of female woe, and they discuss what it's like to read her work for the first time during this discussion of Andrews' 1982 novel My Sweet Audrina. This claustrophobic tale of a girl raised with family secrets in the shadow of her dead sister proves to be a surprisingly traumatic experience for Kate who is forced to confront some of her darkest fears, including the horrors of inheriting someone else's kids. Here to read an especially sensational passage from the book is Wendy Mays, hostess of Pet Cinematary, the podcast dedicated to taking a deeper look at the role of animals in film. This is her first time reading the work of V.C. Andrews as well, and it turned out to be a much more difficult task than your hosts imagined to find a woman unfamiliar with these macabre little novels. How does the domestic nightmare world of My Sweet Audrina effect your hosts? Did V.C. Andrews' life experiences add to the intensity of her stories? What were your hosts reading as tweens? Why did tween girls love these depressing forays into mental illness and isolation so much? Find out all this and more on this episode of Bad Books for Bad People.
