Gunter Pauli has published over 40 books, including his most famous, The Blue Economy. He is an economist, serial entrepreneur, Ted talker and founder of ZERI (Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives). Gunter was the first person to register ‘Zero Emissions' as a trademark and recently won the 2021 Goi Peace Award for his contribution to society. He continues to contribute by sharing different business models that aim to leave the world in a better place. His vision for the future of business is inspiring and challenges us to go one step further than current ‘sustainable' models and practices.  Here are a few things we discussed in this great chat; The difference between the “Green Economy” and the “Blue Economy” Listen to Gunter's story of how he started his own “green” business, which leads him to question what a sustainable business should really look like, and the economy that needs to be created to ensure that something that is good for us, and the planet, isn't the most expensive in the market. The need to change from competition on price, which leads to cutting corners, to competition on value, which is a defining part of the Blue Economy. Concepts and business models within his two new books - Coffee Solutions and Plastic Solutions. Why we need to focus more on physics rather than chemistry. Industry Symbiosis rebrand to the Circular Economy, the principles of which have been around for a while. Creating something out of nothing. The need to relearn that we are being taught at school and university, especially, for those studying business, sciences and engineering.Where short-term thinking gets us - you might be surprised to learn that our hand sanitizers have plastic in them, causing billions of microplastics to pollute our waters.  The importance of multiple revenue streams, burn rate and return on investment when developing your business. Gunter suggests forgetting the use of spreadsheets, Google, or Wikipedia. If we're using sources that everyone else is using, then we aren't able to think outside the box to create opportunities that no one else sees. He also recommends not building a business plan until you have your first sale. Listen to Gunter chat through multiple business models and their simple ingenuity to create value both to people and the planet. Relevant Links Coffee Solutions  Plastic Solutions The Blue Economy Children's Fables by Gunter PauliBlue Economy innovations & business modelsJoin our community LinkedinInstagramWebsiteThis podcast was made in partnership with Ecologi, a subscription service that helps you take action on the climate crisis via funding climate projects & planting trees. This podcast was made using SquadCast.

The future of entrepreneurship, the need for common good and encouraging creativity in an economic world that is sometimes cautious to change.  To help me with this topic is the wonderful Gunter Pauli, the entrepreneur, global speaker and author of The Blue Economy whose activities span business, culture, science, politics and the environment.  Gunter is also the founder of ZERI, the Zeri Emissions Research and Initiatives at the United Nations University in Tokyo and also established the global ZERI network as a foundation where they redesign production and consumption into clusters of industries inspired by natural systems which are designed to be zero waste. In today's episode, Gunter reminds us of possibility and we discuss the current climate and some of his projects including full circle coffee production to removing and repurposing mining dust.  Gunter has delivered time and time again for the environment, his imagination and action continue to demonstrate what can be done and needs to be done urgently. From the time a coffee cherry is harvested and processed to the time a cup of coffee is poured into your mug, an extraordinary amount of waste is created — and when you add it all together, global coffee consumption is responsible for more than 23 million tons of waste annually, according to sustainability researcher Gunter Pauli. Among that heaping pile of waste are hundreds of thousands of pounds of wet coffee grounds. What if that didn’t all have to be waste, though? Back in 2015, our guest Julian Mitchell and his co-founder Ryan Creed discovered how to grow gourmet mushrooms from waste coffee grounds. Immediately, they saw an opportunity to reverse this waste problem and turn it into something positive by creating Life Cykel, a biotechnology company focused on creating products and services that improve both human health and planetary harmony. So, not only is Life Cykel converting coffee waste into mushroom farms (and teaching others how to do the same thing), they’re also creating some incredible products from these high-quality functional mushrooms. We’ve talked about the incredible health benefits of mushrooms on the show before, but now we can get those same benefits knowing that we’re actually reducing the total amount of waste polluting our planet. That’s a win-win in my book, and that’s why I’m excited to be supporting Life Cykel’s mission. If you want to add mushrooms to your biohacking routine, you can use the code “LUKESAVE20” to get 20% off at lifecykel.com.   Topics Discussed In This Episode: Creating the future of food The most nutritious strains of mushroom Why it’s so difficult to grow mushrooms (as many aspiring trippers have learned) What you need to know if you want to grow your own mushrooms An incredible new documentary, Fantastic Fungi Why mushrooms aren’t plants — they’re part of their own kingdom Can we get contaminated from mushrooms grown on coffee grounds? How to choose high-quality mushrooms The dual-extract process that Life Cykel uses to get the medicine out of the fungi How to identify whether your mushroom-based products are using high-quality mushrooms Why I use a variety of different mushroom-based products in addition to Life Cykel: Four Sigmatic, Longevity Power, and Real Mushrooms Researching the supply chains of the products that you use How different functional mushrooms can be used in your biohacking tool belt Why Lion’s Mane is the closest you can get to a psychedelic mushroom (without tripping) Mushroom biotechnology applications for a healthy planet beyond growing mushrooms   More about this episode.   Connect with Luke on social media to learn how to take your lifestyle to the next level, plus catch exclusive live interviews & events: INSTAGRAM - @lukestorey // https://www.instagram.com/lukestorey/ FACEBOOK - https://www.facebook.com/MrLukeStorey/ TWITTER - @MrLukeStorey // https://twitter.com/MRLUKESTOREY YOUTUBE - https://www.youtube.com/c/LukeStorey THIS SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: BEEKEEPER'S NATURALS. It has Lion’s Man, which is my favorite medicinal mushroom because it helps with focus, productivity, and creativity. It’s just like a little biohacking bomb for your brain! And what I love most about Four Sigmatic is that you can get all of that in an instant coffee, which is great for when you’re busy or on the go or just don’t want to make a cup of coffee. In the eighth Premsela Lecture on Sunday 4 November 2012 in Amsterdam, he talked about how designers could contribute to this new way of doing business.
