POPULARITY
Just before Christmas 1984, Harry Belafonte wanted US artists (and especially black artists) to create a charity album to benefit starving people in Africa as the Do They Know It's Christmas single by the days most popular UK bands was a huge success. He teamed up with manager to the stars Ken Kragen to put together the team that would write and record the lead single. Immediately, Ken enlisted his client, Lionel Richie, to write the song. Lionel and Ken knew they'd need all-star producer Quincy Jones to put it all together. Quincy thought it would be a good idea to get the biggest pop star in the world, Michael Jackson, involved and things snowballed from there as Ken brought on legends like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles and artists that were popular at the time like Billy Joel, Kim Carnes, Cindy Lauper, Huey Lewis and more. But how would they get all that talent in one room at one time? Ken devised the idea that so many would be in LA for the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985 so that would be the ideal time. But that was 5 weeks away!!! So Ken went about finding the venue and Lionel and Michael worked on the song. It was all kept very hush hush and even the artists didn't know where they were going after the AMAs until they were on the way. And to make the night even more stressful for Lionel, he was hosting the AMAs and was performing twice (not to mention collecting 6 awards that night). The documentary was a fascinating glimpse into one special night where all egos were put aside in order to record a special song for a worthy cause. Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Chapin over Zoom video!“Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” — Ken Kragen, Harry Chapin’s manager and co-creator of USA for Africa and Hands Across AmericaThe incredible life of Harry Chapin can be seen like never before in, Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something. This documentary, directed by Rick Korn and released by Greenwich Entertainment (Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, Creem: America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind), follows the renowned GRAMMY-nominated folk singer from childhood - spent under the shadow of his jazz drummer father - throughout his tragically short life and captures the up-and-down spirit of one of folk’s great humanitarians. The film’s theatrical release is set for October 16 on World Food Day — a fitting coincidence for a man who co-founded the influential hunger non-profit WhyHunger.Told through archival footages and new interviews, When In Doubt, Do Somethingexplores like never before the key moments in Chapin’s life, including performing with his brothers and working on the Academy Award-nominated documentary Legendary Champions, to his solo success with hits like “Taxi,” “W.O.L.D.” and “Cat’s In The Cradle” and his tireless philanthropic work, which included his efforts with WhyHunger and a seemingly endless run of benefit performances, all of which led to him being posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. This documentary paints a new picture of the singer-songwriter who used his fame as a launching point to help others and influence politics. It features testimonials from Chapin's family (including Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin), as well as peers including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Kenny Rogers, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Pat Benatar, Bob Geldof, Ken Kragen, longtime bassist John Wallace, and WhyHunger co-founder Bill Ayres. “Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” These words kick off the debut trailer of When In Doubt, Do Something: The Harry Chapin Story. Watch the trailer, which premiered this morning on Rolling Stone: https://bit.ly/32y9dHsA portion of proceeds from the film will go to both WhyHunger and The Harry Chapin Foundation. The film was produced by Korn, S.A. Baron, and Chapin’s son, Jason Chapin.Harry Chapin sold over 16 million records, had 14 hit singles, and garnered two GRAMMY nominations. In 1977 he was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger. In 1986, he was posthumously awarded the GRAMMY President’s Merit Award. He was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2011. About WhyHungerFounded in 1975 by the late Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres, WhyHunger believes a world without hunger is possible. Ken Kragen has achieved things many only dream of: managing world-class musicians, raising millions of dollars to fight hunger internationally and at home. How does he do it? Recently he spoke with Steve Sims on “The Art of Making Things Happen Podcast” about his illustrious career and the importance of giving back and living a balanced life. In the 1980s Ken Kragen was responsible for gathering the top musicians to raise $53 million for USA for Africa through its superstar-powered “We Are the World” hit single. Kragen was the personal managers for numerous musicians like, Trisha Yearwood, Travis Tritt, Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers for many years. His next project raised $34 million by creating a human chain that stretched from New York to Los Angeles, "Hands Across America". In addition to this fundraising success, the effort helped release $800 million of government funding that had been held to feed women, children and infants. Kragen attributes his success to being in the right place at the right time. Now in his 80's, he hasn't slowed down, currently working on 9 projects. Anyone looking to achieve a more balanced life could take a page or two from Kragen's book, "Life is a Contact Sport". He says his parents are his inspiration. They taught him the importance of pursuing what you're really passionate about, to maximize the likes and minimize the dislikes in life. This balance has enabled him to stay active in consulting, teaching, developing documentaries and working on a project connected to the World's Fair in Dubai in 2020. Today's Guest I'm excited to introduce today's guest, Carmen Spagnola. I recently discovered Carmen after I posted my first marketing rant on Facebook, asking for examples of people who approach online marketing in a truly different way. On this date in 1985, the charity song “We Are The World” was released. Here are some things you may not have known about it. More than a million people died as a result of a widespread famine in Ethiopia between 1983 and 1985, in the midst of more than two decades of insurrection and civil war. In response to this, musician Bob Geldof organized a supergroup of mostly British and Irish musicians called Band Aid to record a charity single called “Do They Know It’s Christmas.” The song ended up raising 8 million pounds in the first year. Inspired by the success, Harry Belafonte decided to organize an American version. Calling the group USA For Africa, the USA standing for United Support of Artists, the group would raise money for African famine relief and to fight hunger in the United States. Belafonte called on entertainment manager Ken Kragen, whose clients included Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers. Stevie Wonder was the third artist to join up. Quincy Jones was brought on to co-produce the song, and he convinced Michael Jackson to join the effort. Jackson, Richie and Wonder were initially assigned songwriting duties, but Wonder had to drop out because of time constraints. Jackson and Richie spent a week working together on the song. The duo completed writing the song the night before recording was scheduled to begin. On the night of Jan. 22, Jackson, Richie, Wonder and Jones recorded a vocal guide of the song to send to the artists who would be participating in the full recording session about a week later. At about 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 28, musicians began gathering at A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood. The final version was completed at about 8 a.m. The song was released on March 7, and went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after two weeks, becoming the second song after “Let It Be” by The Beatles to his No. 1 so quickly. The song topped Billboard’s Adult Contemporary, R&B and Dance charts as well. It hit No. 27 on the Mainstream Rock chart and 76 on the Country Singles chart. A videotape of the recording session ended up being the ninth best-selling home video of the year. The song also topped the charts in 15 other countries, and was the year-end No. 1 hit in Australia and New Zealand. Since its release, the song has raised more than $63 million for USA For Africa’s humanitarian fund. Our question: Who was the only singer on “We Are The World” who also played an instrument on the track? Today is Teachers’ Day in Albania. It’s unofficially National Sportsmanship Day, National Cereal Day, and Peace Corps Day. It’s the birthday of Janet Guthrie, the first woman to race in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500, who turns 79; actress and comedian Wanda Sykes, who is 53; and actress Jenna Fischer, who is 43. This week in 1985, the top song in the U.S. was “Can’t Fight This Feeling” by REO Speedwagon. The No. 1 movie was “Beverly Hills Cop,” while the novel “If Tomorrow Comes” by Sidney Sheldon topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Ken Kragen is the former manager for such pop icons as Lionel Ritchie, Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton John, The Bee Gees and many more.
