FireConnect Since almost the beginning we have been looking for ways to ditch wires. They are a pain to run across rooms, create unsightly bulges in carpet or even require drywall cutting. There are a few technologies that have been out for some time now. We have AirPlay by apple, Chromecast by Google, Bluetooth, and few other lesser known technologies. They all work pretty well and have support from various receiver manufacturers. A newer technology was brought to our attention by a listener called FireConnect. FireConnect is the brainchild of San Francisco based Blackfire Research Corp. Fireconnect has the usual feature list but goes beyond what the typical wireless protocols support today. Features: High-res and multichannel - Streaming of up to 24-bit/192kHz audio, and multichannel 2.1, 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Lossy or lossless BT and Aux Input Rebroadcast - Auxiliary inputs and Bluetooth devices will be rebroadcast wirelessly. Multi Source Play - You can sync zones or play them independently. Video streaming - Currently if you want to stream video you need an add on device. FireConnect is hoping to make streaming video as simple as sending it to your A/V Receiver or TV. Their spec supports the ability to stream HD Video and lossless 24-bit/192kHz Studio Quality HD audio to any device. Google Cast included - Why not? It's open to the world! To keep everything running smooth and in sync, Fireconnect gets down to the packet layer of your network data. RPM (Real-Time Packet Management) Delays in receiving packets is one of the most challenging issues in real-time video delivery over wireless networks. A late packet becomes useless for the decoding and display even if it is received correctly at the receiver. RPM allows Fireconnect devices to stream HD Video and lossless 24-bit/192kHz Studio Quality HD audio to any device in any room - it's how they make sure that there are no gaps or drop-outs in your music and video. TIS (Traffic Independent Synchronization) No matter how busy your network is, your content stays in sync. Delays are adjusted in real time so that a speaker in the family does not drift too far off from the rest of the zones. These adjustments are happening constantly and are not noticeable by the listener. DSB (Dynamic Stream Balancing) When streaming to multiple devices, DSB keeps it all in balance. - Not quite sure what this is but keeping things in balance is always a good idea! The goal is to wirelessly transmit your audio and video to your media devices, which include Multi-Room smart speakers, A/V Receivers, smartwatches and smart TVs across different manufactures so long as they use the Fireconnect technology. The technology will be able to turn your smartwatch into a music hub that can wirelessly send audio to your wireless headphones or music zones throughout your house. Video does not have to be point to point. You will be able to stream a video signal to multiple screens. So you'll be able to watch the same video throughout your home whether it's on the big screen or tablet. Where can I get it? Pioneer and Onkyo have receivers that support this tech. Pioneer VSX-1131 7.2-Channel AV Receiver with MCACC built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi $539 - Firmware update required Onkyo TX-NR555 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver $449 Firmware update required. Multi-room audio enabled by this technology requires an optional Onkyo wireless speaker scheduled for release in late 2016. Onkyo cannot guarantee the compatibility of its A/V receivers with other devices featuring FireConnect. Uh-Oh!! HTC One Play music simultaneously to multiple Blackfire compliant speakers from HTC One M9. As far as speakers go we couldn't find any. That's not saying there aren't any, but a simple search revealed nothing. So pretty much as best as we can see it. You'll be able to send audio from your HTC One to an Onkyo or Pioneer receiver and have it play through your wired speakers. This technology was announced in 2010 and may only be coming on the scene. We'll keep our eyes on it for you and see how it develops. But right now we have a hard time seeing how it will be able to beat Google and Apple's entrenched technology.

As any Neil Simon fan can tell you, rumors are pretty funny things. They often appear when they're least expected and they never come alone; rather, they arrive trailing a half-dozen other rumors that first support, then debunk, then ultimately confirm half of what the original was saying (but usually not the obvious half). Mix in about 500 mobile tech sites covering each and every rumor, and things get interesting mighty quick. This week is absolutely dominated by rumors ... and not much else. Considering the huge news dump we're anticipating next week with the arrival of Google I/O, we're taking it easy on the podcast this week by focusing exclusively on the news block. We'll cover the iPhone 6s (which might be coming soon), Galaxy Note 5 (which probably isn't), ASUS ZenFone 2 (which is already here), and then we'll get caught up with new team member Hayato Huseman on the devices he's been reviewing over the past month. It's a laid-back approach to a top-notch show, and that's a beat we can all dance to. This week, we talk about Microsoft's new moonshot, its augmented reality wearable, HoloLens, and lots of Windows 10 stuff. Can it fix the company's epic fragmentation issues? We talk about John Chen's letter about net neutrality and how Apple should be forced to make iMessage for Android (or something). Is he crazy, or does he have a point? Then we delve into the new HTC One device, and what it needs to be successful. I think it needs a better camera, but everyone else has opinions. What's yours? Also: Motorola's epic Lollipop rollout mess up; the Samsung Galaxy S6; and Kyle Lowry, who was selected to start at point guard for the Eastern Conference All-Star team on February 5th. This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. Here is the news. China's top party discipline watchdog has announced a new round of inspections nationwide to fight against corruption. The Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection says inspectors will be sent to provincial-level regions across China including Beijing, Tianjin, Liaoning Province in northeast China and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in western China. The commission will also send anti-graft teams to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Fudan University in Shanghai and the China Oil and Foodstuffs Company. The inspection is aimed at uncovering harmful behavior by officials, including trading power for money, abusing power, and bribery, as well as harmful work styles such as formalism, bureaucracy and extravagance. The Communist Party of China began routinely sending teams to oversee the performance of officials in 2003. The practice was written into the Party's Constitution five years later. This is NEWS Plus Special English. China is considering a plan to expand a major Siberian tiger reserve in northeast China and move out half of the residents in order to better protect the rare species. The plan will see the expansion of an existing Siberian Tiger Nature Reserve in Hunchun city in Jilin Province. The 100,000-hectare nature reserve will be enlarged by more than 500 hectares if the proposed plan is approved by the State Council, China's cabinet. The plan will see half of the 6,000 residents living in the reserve relocated to other areas. The remaining population will be moved out gradually in the local urbanization process. The relocation program aims to reduce human disturbance to wild Siberian tigers. Deforestation by the locals and their frog breeding businesses have seriously affected the living environment of the species. Worldwide, almost 500 Siberian tigers are believed to live in the wild, and most of them in eastern Russia. Around 20 of the big cats are found in northeast China's Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces. For the past decades, the local governments have strengthened efforts to protect the natural environment and crackdown on poaching. The tiger population in Hunchun has doubled in the past 15 years. In 1998, 4 tigers were found in the mountains in Hunchun in a survey jointly conducted by experts from China, Russia and the United States. The latest survey, conducted in 2012, found the number to be seven in the city. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. The HTC One might be the best smartphone you never heard of. HTC is updating its flagship HTC One smartphone by giving it a larger screen, better software and more camera features. The original HTC One received good reviews and was named the best smartphone of 2013 at the wireless industry's premier trade show in Barcelona, Spain in February this year. The updated One expands on some of the features that made it notable. The new One has a metal design like last year's model, but it feels smoother and more comfortable. The back edges are more curved and remind people of the sleek finish in Apple's latest iPads. HTC also turns its hub for personalized content, the BlinkFeed, into a companion rather than an unwelcomed guest. HTC is making the Android phone available through all major carriers simultaneously, starting last week online, and in retail stores by next Thursday. The new phone, known officially as HTC One, or M8, will cost about 200 to 250 US dollars with a two-year service contract, or about 650 dollars without a contract. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide hit 400 parts per million two months earlier, setting another record in human history. That was according to Climate Central, a United States based nonprofit news organization that analyzes and reports on climate science. Climate Central says this intensity is expected to linger for a while in the northern hemisphere. For example, the reading for Hawaii is currently standing at 401 ppm. Seasonal growth of plants has been affected, due to the fact that carbon dioxide peak was usually in May. Scientists warn that global greenhouse effect may speed up, as human activities continue to push up the emission of carbon dioxide. Last year, the concentration of carbon dioxide peaked at 400 ppm for the first time in human history. That was a milestone for global warming. You're listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Yun Feng in Beijing. You can access our program by logging onto NEWSPlusRadio.cn. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know by e-mailing us at mansuyingyu@cri.com.cn. That's mansuyingyu@cri.com.cn. Now the news continues. Researchers in the United States have revived a giant virus more than 30,000 years old. The virus was recovered from the permafrost of northeast Siberia, and it poses no threat to humans. The virus is considered giant when compared to other viruses, but it is microscopic. It is a new kind of giant virus, joining a group of others that was first discovered 10 years ago. Researchers say the finding suggests that dangerous germs might emerge in the future, when permafrost thaws because of global warming. They say sampling permafrost to look for ancient viruses is an inexpensive and safe way to assess that potential threat. This is NEWS Plus Special English. In a similar move: Scientists have revived a moss that was frozen beneath Antarctica for about 1,600 years. When it was dug up from ice, the simple moss was black, and looked dead. But when it was thawed in a British lab's incubator, something happened. The seemingly lifeless plant grew again. British scientists say the moss was visibly greening with new shoots after three weeks. They didn't do anything to make it grow except squirt it with distilled water.
Option Block 317: The Old Goldman Bait and Switch Trading Block: A mild rally on the street today. JCPenney on the move, jumping as high as 26%, its greatest one-day percentage gain in least 30 years! Tesla announced on Wednesday its big expansion plans will be partially funded through a $1.6 billion bond issue. Goldman's investor day study. Odd Block: Call buyers in American Axle and Manufacturing (AXL), both calls and puts trade in CBL & Associates Properties, Inc. (CBL). Xpress Block: Some hedging going on: VIX call buying, SPDR put buying. Customers seem to be getting nervous. Mail Block: The all-stars will take your questions now. Question from Concerned Spreader: I have a question for the mail block on the option block program. I would like to know if there is a special procedure for entering ratio-type spreads on the OX website. Whenever I try to enter any spread trade, from the XSpreads ticket, it always defaults to the same size for each leg. When I try to change that, it gives me a popup saying that each leg must be the same size. I wanted to buy some calls but did not have enough capital in my account to also sell the equal number of puts to finance them. So I wanted to trade what amounted to a risk reversal on a ratio. I tried simply adding a leg to my call trade ticket without success. I tried the combo, straddle, butterfly and condor tabs in the XSpreads ticket also with no luck. I suppose my only alternative is to execute the legs separately and then incur multiple ticket changes. Perhaps OX need to ass a ratio tab to the XSpreads ticket? Please let me know if I am missing something obvious. Question from NTaleb - Why do you think so much options unusual activity is focused on calls instead of puts? There are just as many negative surprises as positive surprises lurking out there. Comment from Chitim - Just used the app to listen to option block during my flight to San Fran. Always had problems streaming your stuff on my HTC One because Android sucks for streaming podcasts. But this worked like a charm! I downloaded it ahead of time and it was ready to go when we took off. Definitely preferable to the inflight movie. Also, why does Andrew always sound so surprised to be on the show? Keep them coming! Around the Block: There is a disconnect between realized and implied vol. Russian tough talk. SPX closing high…why can't people accept the market at this level? Is it time to sell S&P? Volatility in the sovereign debt market is astounding. Astounding!
