How the Parisienne venue really stepped up to the mark. Such a great read with layer upon layer of symbolism in this gothic edged story with some great modernist tricks in the telling. In this episode Dr. Anthony Esolen discusses his book Sex and the Unreal City. When it comes to the way modern western culture approaches sex, what are the main idols that shape the moral conversation? Why is consent not enough? In what ways is it unjust to presume that men and women are equal in their physical embodiment? What should the Church do to help young people in the midst of this confusion? These are just some of the questions that Dr. Esolen addresses.  Listen to find out why the Sexual Revolution has led to so much loneliness, and how we can begin to recover the building blocks of real cities and communities.

The first-ever robotic surgery without a human surgeon guiding it has been successfully performed at Johns Hopkins University. The Smart Tissues Autonomous Robot (STAR) completed a keyhole procedure called intestinal anastomosis – the sewing together of two sections of soft bowel - on pigs. More than a million of these surgeries are performed each year in the US alone and they need to be carried out very precisely and accurately to avoid potentially fatal complications. Professor Axel Krieger, the mechanical engineer on the team, tells Gareth how this is a major advancement in robotic surgery. Singapore Surveillance Singapore often introduces innovative tech to its citizens, but there is a lack of transparency about the way the data is collected and used. As public tech becomes more affordable it is becoming increasingly available. While the hope is it will solve complex social problems there is no transparency over the algorithms used. This means we don't know the kind of prejudices, privileges, and assumptions being built in. Without intervention, societal prejudices will continue to be perpetuated. Peter Guest from the Rest of World website has been looking into the dangers of public tech in Singapore and beyond. He tells us why tech companies need to be more transparent. unReal City Backstage at the Brighton Dome looks more like the technical suite of a TV studio than a theatre, as technicians watch multiple screens showing the audience and actors in different rooms - and showing a variety of feeds from their VR headsets - because this piece of immersive theatre, unReal City, takes place in both physical and virtual reality. Reporter Claire Jordan has been meeting with the Director and disabled artists from Access All Areas - a learning-disabled theatre company - behind the production, which explores if it's easier or better to connect in the flesh or as an avatar and if links are stronger in reality or could the Metaverse allow us to re-invent ourselves. The programme is presented by Gareth Mitchell with expert commentary from Bill Thompson. For episode #82 we welcome Dr Mark Fitzpatrick. He is a teacher, writer, and independent scholar, specialising in the Weird and the Wonderful. He has a PhD in Literature from the Université de Paris – Sorbonne Nouvelle, and is currently an invited lecturer in several Paris universities. Originally from Cork, he spent twenty years in Paris, living in garrets and trying to get his novels published. When this proved to no avail, he began publishing his work online on his website thehollowbehindthehearthstone.com, under a variety of aliases, and his first novel, Unreal City, is coming out in early 2022. He has recently moved to Aquitaine, where he lives in a little house on the grounds of a Strange Crumbling Manor, with his wife, his two children, a Wicked Uncle, and two and half cats. In the show we discuss the nature of belief and Mark details a remarkable experience he had with other in land around his home. We also discuss dual observance, being in right relation with place, the festival of Imbolc and bringing pagan festivals into ones circle. In the Plus show we discuss the relationship between pagan festivals and subsistence farming and dependence on being in good relation to the land and the intelligences therein. We also get into how the others may cultivate human beings for whatever their business may be. Towards the end of show we get into the differences between the Gaelic mind and Anglo mind through their respective languages and stories and the influence in how they see the world. John Ford's Stagecoach is a classic of the American Western that both elevated the genre and catapulted the career of its breakout star, John Wayne. Well-known Catholic writer and cultural commentator, Anthony Esolen, joins James and Thomas this week to discuss the film against the backdrop of the civil unrest incited by the death of George Floyd. Of Ford, Tony observes: "He makes movies about the way people come together to form a real society with their common good in mind, and he shows how that can fall apart because of human stupidity or selfishness — their pride, their avarice, their hardheartedness.” Next time, we discuss A Man for All Seasons, the film adaptation of Robert Bolt's play about St. Thomas More. Three episodes away from the magical 100th episode and we are having a blast getting there!! Episode 97 is back to normal form, discussing all of the best in entertainment news. Though this episode does take a darker tone, as we do discuss a couple of controversial topics! PLUS we have two amazing interviews! DJ Bryant joins the show to speak about his book, Unreal City! Unreal city contains five different stories about relationships; Echoes Into Eternity, Evelyn Dalton-Hoyt, The Yellow Knife Retrospective, and Objet D'art. This is a crazy story that plays on the fine line of hate, in correlation with other emotions! The characters seem to always find themselves in different life predicaments! Jose Pimienta also joins the show to talk to us about his kickstarter, Suncatcher!  Suncatcher tells the story of a young musician from Mexicali, her figures out that the soul of her dead grandfather is trapped in his old guitar! She must find a way to free her grandfather, by playing the song on the guitar, that he never wrote, plus traverse her young life as a musician! Jose AKA Joe Pi, we might during a panel at Denver Comic Con 2018. He is a very eloquent speaker, and his ideas come from life experiences. Whether they're in the story, or the setting, he always is able to put something forward that is good, and unique! If you can donate something to the kickstarter, definitely consider donating to Jose! Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! The Waste Land BY T. S. ELIOT                                     FOR EZRA POUND                                IL MIGLIOR FABBRO I. The Burial of the Dead     April is the cruellest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers. Summer surprised us, coming over the Starnbergersee With a shower of rain; we stopped in the colonnade, And went on in sunlight, into the Hofgarten, And drank coffee, and talked for an hour. Bin gar keine Russin, stamm’ aus Litauen, echt deutsch. And when we were children, staying at the arch-duke’s, My cousin’s, he took me out on a sled, And I was frightened. He said, Marie, Marie, hold on tight. And down we went. In the mountains, there you feel free. I read, much of the night, and go south in the winter.     What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man, You cannot say, or guess, for you know only A heap of broken images, where the sun beats, And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief, And the dry stone no sound of water. Only There is shadow under this red rock, (Come in under the shadow of this red rock), And I will show you something different from either Your shadow at morning striding behind you Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you; I will show you fear in a handful of dust.                       Frisch weht der Wind                       Der Heimat zu                       Mein Irisch Kind,                       Wo weilest du? “You gave me hyacinths first a year ago; “They called me the hyacinth girl.” —Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden, Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither Living nor dead, and I knew nothing, Looking into the heart of light, the silence. Oed’ und leer das Meer.     Madame Sosostris, famous clairvoyante, Had a bad cold, nevertheless Is known to be the wisest woman in Europe, With a wicked pack of cards. Here, said she, Is your card, the drowned Phoenician Sailor, (Those are pearls that were his eyes. Look!) Here is Belladonna, the Lady of the Rocks, The lady of situations. Here is the man with three staves, and here the Wheel, And here is the one-eyed merchant, and this card, Which is blank, is something he carries on his back, Which I am forbidden to see. I do not find The Hanged Man. Fear death by water. I see crowds of people, walking round in a ring. Thank you. If you see dear Mrs. Equitone, Tell her I bring the horoscope myself: One must be so careful these days.     Unreal City, Under the brown fog of a winter dawn, A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many, I had not thought death had undone so many. Sighs, short and infrequent, were exhaled, And each man fixed his eyes before his feet. Flowed up the hill and down King William Street, To where Saint Mary Woolnoth kept the hours With a dead sound on the final stroke of nine. There I saw one I knew, and stopped him, crying: “Stetson! “You who were with me in the ships at Mylae! “That corpse you planted last year in your garden, “Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year? “Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed? “Oh keep the Dog far hence, that’s friend to men, “Or with his nails he’ll dig it up again! “You! hypocrite lecteur!—mon semblable,—mon frère!”

Heaven. Hell. What’s the difference? The lines are blurred this week as Craig spins the roulette wheel on the Twilight Zone classic “A Nice Place to Visit” and can’t decide between a halo or a brimstone necklace. He then descends to the cheap and cheesy bowels of 70’s hell for the Night Gallery quickie “Hell’s Bells.” It’s groovy, man. Fran En Plats Du Ej Kan Se - 2003 The Sane Day (2 CD) - 2006 Sleeping In Traffic - Part One - 2007 Sleeping In Traffic: Part Two - 2008 Destined Solitaire - 2009 Mammoth - 2011 The Void - 2012

Los Angeles vs. Las Vegas: Which is the Most Unreal City in America?

Zócalo Public Square

Los Angeles and Las Vegas are cities founded on fantasy—narratives of youthful glamour, the languor of palm and pool dotted landscapes, the ease of private automobile transport, the promise of self-invention and easy fame and power. They share city plans designed according to car culture. And they grow toward each other as they expand into the Mojave Desert. But reality has hit both cities: water grows scarce, space is tighter, cars clog roads and pollute the air, and money is disappearing. Zócalo hosts a panel of experts—including William L. Fox, Director of the Center for Art + Environment at the Nevada Museum of Art, architect and University of Washington assistant professor Nicole Huber; writer, curator and former director of the Las Vegas Art Museum Libby Lumpkin; and educator, author and architect Ralph Stern—to discuss the two parallel cities.

In Our Time: Culture

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the history of London. To T.S.Eliot it was the “Unreal City”, to Wordsworth “Earth has not anything to show more fair” but to Shelley, “Hell is a city much like London”. At the start of this twenty-first century the capital city covers an area of 625 square miles, is home to 7 million souls, and has an economy which at more than £115 billion is larger than that of Saudi Arabia, Ireland or Singapore. Is this modern metropolis still the place that the poets described? Can there be such a thing as a history of a city, which in each generation sucks in its communities from around the country and around the globe? In a city whose buildings have been razed, whose people have been decimated and whose borders have been dramatically redrawn, what is there that connects it to its own past? With Peter Ackroyd, author of London: The Biography; Claire Tomalin, author and biographer of Samuel Pepys; Iain Sinclair, poet, novelist and author of Liquid City and Lights Out for the Territory.
