Attention, dear listeners! This episode carries a few advisory warnings. We're delving into content that features a song peppered with a spicy word or two and discussions that may not be appropriate for a younger audience. It's not exactly "shield your grandma's ears" material, but it's certainly not kindergarten fare. Consider this episode to have a "PG-13" rating—there's a bit of mischief, but all in good fun. Our squeaky-clean reputation? Well, it's taking a tiny holiday! If what you hear doesn't offend you, then you may end up laughing with us. Is Derringer Discoveries now a comedy podcast? With the hitmaker Dean Friedman joining us, the answer is a definite yes! If you're not chuckling throughout this episode, perhaps it's time to see if your internal laugh meter needs a tune-up. Additionally, we delve into Dean Friedman's 2005 UK tour, which nearly came to a halt due to a cannabis controversy! Can you say scandalous? Indeed, it was so scandalous that 39 of the 40 venues canceled upon learning of Dean's plans! We give a shout-out to the one venue in Scotland that supported Dean amidst the uproar. But this is not the worst of it! In this episode, we analyze a song featuring a teenage protagonist who was (and may still be) a frequent visitor to the Golden Arches. A song so troubling that, in 1982, it was actually banned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and it derailed Dean's career. This episode also features a mix of positive, family-friendly content. For instance, we discuss how the vegetarian protagonist in Dean Friedman's international Top 40 hit "Ariel" influenced Paul Derringer's romantic life. Tune in to the episode to discover more! We also learn of Dean's 44-year marriage to the love of his life, Alison. How many famous recording artists can make this claim? We don't know! (That's why we're asking.) Furthermore, we reflect on Dean's illustrious 47+ year career in the music business, minus the almost 20 years he was exiled on a remote desert island (well, not an actual desert island - just New Jersey) after being banned by the BBC in 1982. Besides the US and Canada Top 40 hit "Ariel," Dean also scored two Top 40 hits in the UK, with one reaching #3 in 1978. Interestingly, the same song banned by the BBC in 1982 was eventually covered by Canada's Barenaked Ladies and then it became a US Top 40 hit for another recording artist! That artist took it all the way to #1 in Norway. What happens next after you've written a #1 hit? Well, if you're Dean, you license the song to one of the biggest corporations in the world and it becomes a major radio and television commercial. To seal the deal, Dean agreed to revise the age of the person with whom the protagonist is in love, even though they were originally both the same age! Furthermore, you can no longer identify anyone in the song as a virgin. Gone is the purity! And no more polyester, which is how Dean described the clothing worn by the Golden Arches employee in the original version! US listeners have likely heard the commercial, a snippet of which is included in this episode. It's best enjoyed with a cup of coffee, which will become clear upon listening. After experiencing this fun-filled episode, you will have the opportunity to see Dean Friedman "live" in concert. Starting in early 2025, Dean will be on tour in the US and then the UK. Dean Friedman whose family was in the steel business became attracted to the advertising world (it is magnetic) at age 14 and never looked back. In fact, in his storied career he regularly looked forward. Dean had an innate understanding of the value of consumer research. From that research he gleaned true insights that inspired many iconic brand campaigns. Dean's first two decades in the business were at W.B. Doner (now Doner and Partners) spanning Detroit to London and a few million miles of travel serving clients. As Doner transitioned into its next generation of leadership, Dean struck out on his own joining Robert Solomon in an agency that was quickly called Solomon, Friedman & Associates (SFA) later rebranding as Real Integrated in the early days of the Internet. Dean talks about pushing and cajoling clients to do bold work that he calls ambitious ideas. I was struck by how Dean's career journey harnessed his own personal ambitions and how he has passed that drive on to his sons and to his successors at the agency. And it all started in the mailroom. Please take a listen to Dean Friedman, a tenacious competitor in all his pursuits on this 47th episode of GENeration EXcellence.

Singer-songwriter Dean Friedman isn't a one-hit wonder. His best-known song in the U.S., "Ariel" charted back in 1977, but he's had follow-ups do well in various other countries. Dean was gracious enough to join me this week to talk about his self-titled debut album, which came out 45 years ago, his musical background, some of the books he's authored, and his latest album, American Lullaby, which dropped last year. American Lullaby is a time capsule of the last six years, including the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, the pandemic, divisive political views, climate change, and more. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Dean Friedman, Singer / Songwriter /Author About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Dean Friedman, is a singer-songwriter who burst onto the music scene in 1977 with his irresistible hit single, “Ariel”.   Since then he's had numerous hit singles including “Woman of Mine”, “Lucky Stars”, “Lydia”, “Rocking Chair” and “McDonald's Girl”.  He's recorded 19 terrific albums, including “Well, Well, Said the Rocking Chair”, “The Treehouse Journals”, “Submarine Races”, “Squirrels in the Attic”, “Words and Music”, “12 Songs” and one of my personal favourites, “Dean Friedman in Concert: Shepherd's Bush Empire”.     His latest album, entitled “American Lullaby”, is a collection of deeply moving and thought-provoking songs reflecting our guest's personal reflections and philosophies about the current state of America.   His songs fearlessly touch on a broad range of topics, including the pandemic, the environment, racism, sexism, and of course, the calamity surrounding American politics.    His songs have been covered by bands including The Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five, Ariel Pink, The Tone Rangers, and The Blenders.  He's written, performed and produced the theme music to several TV series including Boon, Nick Arcade, and Eerie, Indiana. He also composed, performed and produced the soundtrack to the 1990 cult horror film, “I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle”, in which he performs the popular track, "She Runs on Blood, Not Gasoline".   And if THAT weren't enough, this exceptionally multi-talented man wrote a groundbreaking book on synthesizers, as well as a guide to songwriting, and a hilarious book entitled, “A Musician's Guide to Surviving the Great Recession”.  And he's even dabbled in the world of video games.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://www.deanfriedman.com/http://www.facebook.com/DeanFriedmanMusic http://www.twitter.com/deanfriedman http://www.youtube.com/deanfriedmanhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/4IT7iUyEDGX4pJDo6CfFRBhttps://itunes.apple.com/artist/3546224 #DeanFriedman   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Welcome to the Consequences Podcast's first venture outside the 10cc universe! We'll still be dipping our toes back into the Kevin/Lol/Graham/Eric sphere as and when, but for now we present an extraordinary conversation with a true songwriting legend: Mr Dean Friedman!   Seen unfairly as a one hit wonder, Friedman's career spans nine eclectic albums and regular international tours. His loyal following is treated to intelligent, witty and beautiful songs. As a talented multi-instrumentalist, he really is the full package. Truly one of the most entertaining people we've ever met.   Much of this chat centres around his new album, ‘American Lullaby'. It's a characteristically eclectic affair, with all the usual high-octane wordplay, wit and melodic/harmonic beauty. This time though, he really packs a lyrical punch. Inspired (appalled?) by recent events in American politics, the pandemic and vicious culture wars, Dean's gloves are off. Prepare to be dazzled by his incredibly thoughtful analysis, honesty, moral and political compass and live performances here. One in particular is a comedy masterclass!   We also delve into other parts of his career, notably his underrated ‘Rumpled Romeo' album from the early 80s, which includes his most successful song, ‘McDonald's Girl'. There's also room for discussion on some of his less well-known songs, and of course we *had* to look at ‘Lucky Stars'. Why is it so misunderstood as a ‘guilty pleasure'?   And we ought to say at this juncture that we simply couldn't resist chatting about 10cc and Consequences in this chat! We just can't help ourselves.

The Dean Friedman Interview You may know singer songwriter Dean Friedman from his 1970s hits 'Lucky Stars', 'Lydia' and 'Ariel', but he has also released some wonderful albums over the years with 'Songs For Grown Ups' and '12 Songs' being two of my favourites. In this first episode, Dean talks about his new album 'American Lullaby'. “The new album and show, ‘American Lullaby',” Friedman explains, “reflects my personal take on all the crazy stuff that's been happening, in America – and around the world. Like all lullabies, it's filled with tales of dark deeds and disaster, but couched in soft, gentle tones, meant to soothe and comfort the listener, while gently bracing them for the potential terrors that await. The Fringe show will be my chance to perform the songs as well as tell the stories behind the songs, all of which were inspired by the shared global trauma we've endured during these past six years of harrowing political and social upheaval.” Dean also talks about his forthcoming ZOOM Tour at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and his favourite Joni Mitchell album. Hi, I'm Kev F and I'm here to tell you about Comic Cuts The Panel Show, your new favourite podcast about comics.Every week I get two guests to bring a panel from a comic into the show. We try and guess where it's from, then we talk comics. Sometimes we get nerdy and knowledgable, and you learn a lot about comics you've probably never heard of, and more often we get inspired by what we see and the conversation goes off at wild tangents. My guests so far have included comic creators like Brian Bolland, Rachel Smith of Quarantine Comix, Metaphrog, Jessica Martin, Julius Zebra's Gary Northfield, The Beano's Nigel Auchterlounie, Laura Howell, Rianne Rowlands & Nigel Parkinson, manga artists like Sonia Leong & Laura Watton, Comics Laureate Hannah Berry, Psycho Gran's David Leach, Resident Alien creator Peter Hogan,  and loads of comedians including Bethany Black, Will Hodgson, Paul Kerensa, Iszi Lawrence, Doug Segal, Ashley Storrie, Juliet Burton, Juliette Myers, Susan Murray, Bennett Arron.  I've had The Secret History of Hollywood's Adam Roche, and legendary singer songwriter Dean Friedman - and the guest list grows every week. And the comics they've brought in have ranged from Marvel and DC to The Bunty and The Eagle, from Robert Crumb to Viz, from brand new webcomics to obscure manga, indy to classic, and all points in-between. There are so many comics out there, and so much love for them.So listen in, have fun guessing what comics we're looking at, and enjoy the conversation with this stellar cast of guests, in a show that - did I mention - is only half an hour long?Subscribe to Comic Cuts The Panel Show, wherever you get your podcasts, and we'll see you every Friday. The thirteenth go-around of the podcast which asks: Showaddywaddy? Again? Really? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, finally sees the good ship Chart Music sail way past the three-hour exclusion zone – but it can’t be helped, because the episode of Thursday Evening Pop Valhalla we dissect here is a classic. Some of the big guns of the Seventies are pulled out, but are immediately bricked by snotty New Wave oiks in charity shop clothes, the foul spell of Revolting and Neutron-Bomb is banished forever, and Kid Jensen looks on from his Fortress of Solitude in approval and then asks some girls if they think he’s sexy. And they say ‘No’. Musicwise, everything you’d expect from ’78 that isn’t caked in Grease is here. Freddie Mercury points out that he likes big butts and he cannot lie, Child pitch up in Brian Tilsley haircuts, Elton John looks like a droog suffering a mid-life crisis as Cathy McGowan sits at his feet, Elvis Costello calls Tony Blackburn a ‘silly man’ while pretending to take drugs, Debbie Harry stares at us unnervingly over a carrier bag, Heatwave drop an era-defining wedding song while dressed up as Turkish waiters, and the Boomtown Rats bring the Ted-Punk wars of the Kings Road into every playground in the country. And there’s Toast. Al Needham is joined by Neil Kulkarni and Taylor Parkes for a rigorous examination of a classic episode of The Pops, veering off on tangents which include worrying about your Dad being got at by Peter Sutcliffe, cardboard cut-outs of Roy Race, the time when the BBC made you put stickers on your radio, and a discussion on Dean Friedman’s seduction technique that went on a lot longer than it really needed to. Swearing a-plenty! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We hear from Tony Rossi, the manager of the Georgia Coffee Shop and Café in the Georgia town where the popular Walking Dead TV series is filmed and he relates how much fun it is when the walking dead visit his eatery. Lucy Leitner tells us why Pittsburgh, Pa. is the epicenter of the Zombie movement in the US. Additional Amazingly Strange, Weird and Unbelievable Stories we captured for the May 13 episode of Ripley Radio, the official radio partner of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! include: Chad Lewis explores the possibility that “real” zombies do actually exist, thanks to a Haitian process called zombification; Jodi Pliszka says the use of maggots is more common than one might believe in contemporary medical treatment; Zombie make-up artist Barry Anderson relates how funny it is to watch actors in full zombie makeup eat a sandwich during their meal break; and 1970s one-hit wonder Dean Friedman provides the musical egress this week with his catchy hit, Ariel.
