To celebrate National Poetry Month, host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello share listener-penned haikus and some of Live Wire's most memorable poet appearances: Roger Reeves explains why poetry is the harbinger of the future; Oregon Poet Laureate Anis Mojgani performs "Today's Love is Brought to You by the Letter John Sands;" Franny Choi discusses how she incorporated Google Translate into her latest collection Soft Science; and Derrick C. Brown teams up with indie band The Helio Sequence for a rhythmically-moving poetic experience.
On this episode of “Death in The Garden", we interview Dr. Sylvia Karpagam, a public health doctor with an MD in Community Medicine in India. Sylvia is a champion at advocating for the rights of all people to have access to quality nutrition, a sharp critic of the caste system, and an advocate for food sovereignty. She is a member of the Global Food Justice Alliance, an organization pushing back against the unjust and unethical campaigns against animal food availability being perpetuated by the global elite. In this episode, we talk about the downsides of a vegan/vegetarianism, the politics around food in India, the globalist/elitist agendas that are being exported to India, the impact of ISKCON on children who rely on “midday meals”, anemia and malnutrition, the BJP and the violence being perpetrated on meat-eaters, the impact of the caste system on people's health, and so much more. Please give Dr. Sylvia Karpagam a follow on Twitter, and read her published work for more information about her, and the impact she is having in her country and around the world. If you are enjoying the show, please rate, review, and subscribe. Check out our Instagram and website for more information about the project. The Helio Sequence recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the release of its fourth album, "Keep Your Eyes Ahead." The Portland, Ore., duo marked the occasion by releasing a deluxe edition of the record via Sup Pop and embarking on a month-long U.S. tour in which the band performed the album in its entirety. That trek included a stop at Denver's Globe Hall. The Helio Sequence stopped into the CPR Performance Studio before that show to play four songs from "Keep Your Eyes Ahead." The band members also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about Portland's music scene, re-learning to play several songs from the album and their plans to get back in the studio.
Ten years after its release, The Helio Sequence's Keep Your Eyes Ahead remains a stark, stunning snapshot of 2000s indie rock, and on its anniversary, frontman Brandon Summers joins John Richards in the KEXP Live Room for a set of four songs from the record and to tell the story behind the . Recorded 10/26/2018. 4 songs - Lately, You Can Come To Me, Can't Say No, HallelujahSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Host Luke Burbank and announcer Elena Passarello confess to how bad they are at “letting go;” poet Tommy Pico explains how writing as his alter ego "Teebs" allows him to be less self-censoring in his work; journalist Eli Saslow discusses Derek Black – the subject of his new book "Rising Out of Hatred" – and how the once-heir to the white nationalist movement made a stunning transformation; comedian Emily Heller spins gut-busting analogies to online dating; and indie rock duo The Helio Sequence perform “Lately” from their album “Keep Your Eyes Ahead.”
Taryn's grandma Carol went on a bike tour in 1944 with her girlfriend Billie. We hear from Carol about the "ordinary adventure" she took at home during World War II. This episode is an opportunity to learn about what Carol's experience was like as a woman living near Vancouver and making airplanes during the war, as well as carving out a couple of weeks for a vacation that might seem surprising to anyone who didn't live through that time. It's a reminder to ask our grandmothers questions because we never know what their stories might hold. Taryn sent us this note with some black and white photos of her grandmother on the one bike tour of her life in 1944: My grandmother is 93 now. During World War II she was a teenager. Instead of going to university she went to work at a factory making airplanes. One summer she got a few days off so she and a female friend did a completely self-supported bike tour from their home in Vancouver BC, over to Vancouver Island and back, except that they didn't call it a bike tour. She says they wanted to go on vacation but they didn't have a car and gas was too expensive so they took bikes. They stayed with host families and toted all the things they would need (a change of clothes and some sandwiches) in suitcases tied to their rear racks with string. Their bikes were single speeds so they walked up all the hills. There may have been boyfriends, or brothers or dads who thought that two women shouldn't embark on such a journey alone and on bikes, but that's not how Grandma remembers it. When I talk to Grandma about this trip now, she doesn't see it as a grand adventure the way that I do. She sees it as a fun girls trip she took back before she got married. I think it's a great way to think about adventure - as something that can be quite ordinary. My grandma has some photos from the trip in an old album... there's one of her friend wearing a halter top and short shorts, riding a single speed bike with a suitcase on it... uphill... while grinning ear to ear. Taryn wanted to learn more about her grandmother Carol and a trip that seemed so out of character for her. In this episode, we get to learn, too. Women Featured in this Episode: Taryn and Carol Eyton Hosted by Gale Straub In this episode you'll hear About the value of photographing your adventures What it was like to be a woman working at a factory to support the war effort during World War II How some women were empowered during this time period What bike touring was like in 1944 How the kindness of strangers prevails over the years What gear you'd have on a bike tour in the 1940's Why we might just overpack for our adventures Why Taryn's Grandma Carol doesn't see her bike trip as extraordinary, but why we still think it's an adventure What Taryn values in her grandmother Why it's important to ask our relatives to tell us their stories, especially as time passes Why you might be surprised by what the older women in your life have in their past Sponsored by Escape Campervans and Deuter Resources: Taryn Eyton: Blog, Instagram, and Facebook Episode landing page on She-Explores.com Open Road, Open Sky - Song [Learn more on She-Explores.com][12] Join the conversation in our She Explores Podcast Facebook Group Sponsors & Codes -Escape Campervans: Use code 'SHEEXPLORES20' for 20% off. This week on "State of Wonder," we get live music from Helio Sequence and Kelli Schaefer, travel the country with photographer Holly Andres, look at the design of prosthetic limbs, and harness the powers of karaoke to learn a language. Karaoke Has A New Role: Teaching Tool - 1:33What’s the best way to learn a language? Some people might take a class or read a book, but our vote goes towards music, which is exactly what Salish teachers are using to introduce their Native American language to new speakers. Every year, a conference that celebrates Salish, a language spoken by many tribes across the Northwest, culminates in an annual Karaoke Contest in Spokane, WA. Contestants have to translate a song and perform it in front of judges. Our correspondent Emily Schwing was backstage at the contest this year.Museums Are Displaying Native Artifacts To Tell A More Complete Story - 6:01Language isn’t the only facet of Northwest indigenous culture that’s getting focused attention right now. The region’s museum curators are working to update their exhibits in a way that both modernizes stories of indigenous people and tells them more truthfully. But what does that mean? Emily Schwing visited two Northwest museums to find out.Photographer Holly Andres - 10:24The photo exhibition "Dreamers of Oregon" features big, dramatic black and white portraits of young men and women whose lives are really, really complicated right now. It went on view this week and is making the rounds in Washington and Multnomah Counties — starting at Pacific University, moving to Portland City Hall and other spots. The photographer of this exhibit, Holly Andres, describes herself as more of a farmer than a hunter: rather than capturing moments of serendipity, like a hunter would, Andres creates them. She builds a set, casts characters, and styles the lighting around her subjects, using as much intention and direction as a filmmaker might. What results is an emotional story richly saturated with color and ornamental backdrops. Her work’s been gaining momentum for years. She was shortlisted for a big industry award, the Ellie for Best Feature Photography, for an incredible spread that appeared in "New York" magazine.Opbmusic Turns 10: A Look Back At Sessions With Helio Sequence [21:42] & Kelli Schaefer [29:05]If you’re a regular State of Wonder listener, you know we partner up all the time with our friends at opbmusic. For 10 years now, they’ve been spotlighting the best in local and national bands, often bringing groups in for a studio session just before they break big nationally. Everyone from Big Thief and Jay Som to, most recently, Haley Heynderickxx. To celebrate their 10th birthday, they’re organizing a concert at the Crystal Ballroom on March 23 with a couple of their favorites: Helio Sequence, Kelli Schaefer, and Natasha Kmeto. To prep you for the big show, we decided to spend a few minutes listening back to those sessions. Tickets for the show are on sale now. Fixing the Arts Tax - 36:34Collection rates the city’s Arts Education and Access Fund, better known as the Arts Tax, haven’t been great since the tax’s inception in 2012, in large part because the terms voters agreed to have required the Revenue Bureau to spend no more than 5 percent of gross collections over a five-year period. Now Portland City Council has removed that collection cap, although it will revisit collections costs every year. The revisions also expand some exemptions for the tax. The arts tax is due this year on April 17.The Design Element of Prosthetics - 38:13When designers talk about designing for humans, most often we think about things that will add a little to your life: a shoe that will make you run faster, a mobile app that will make your website easier to navigate. But some design can truly transform the human experience, and nowhere is that more apparent than at a new exhibit called “Bespoke Bodies: The Design And Craft Of Prosthetics.” It’s curated by the Design Museum Portland at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and it looks at prosthetics not simply as a medical issue, but as a design challenge.
I update everyone on my soap opera situation and then talk at length about beer. Music by The Helio Sequence, The Boxer Rebellion, Explosions in the Sky, Bonobo, Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, Level 42, Croquet Club, Classixx, Jacques Greene.
This is it, folks: we’re in the peak heat of the summer music season. PDX Pop Now is this weekend. Pickathon plucks through Happy Valley next weekend. Then there’s MusicFestNW, the Britt Festival, Sisters Folk Festival. It’s a never-ending cavalcade of lawn chairs and beer gardens and singers backlit by spectacular sunsets.Which is why we’re going to spend the hour hearing from some of the bands who’re currently ruling our playlists and also happen to be touring through this summer. 1:21 - Last week, we traveled to Joseph to record a show from the writers’ festival, Summer Fishtrap. In preparation, we started looking at some of the amazing artists linked to the area, and one in particular stood out. The band Joseph is made up of three sisters: Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner. Unlike many musical siblings, they didn’t grow up singing together, but you can't tell from their pristine harmonies. 10:40 - The band Calexico is named after the border town of Calexico, California, and their music is all about crossing borders, mixing Americana, indie rock, Tex-Mex, jazz, and Latin rhythms. This month, opbmusic caught up with them before a performance at McMenamins Edgefield. 17:46 - Edna Vasquez first made her name in the male world of mariachi music, but now her fingers strum through bands and genres as easily as they do chords. There’s a solo project, a four-piece called No Passengers, and frequent collaborations (watch her opbmusic session). 24:28 - Oregon Art Beat produced this story about Luz Elena Mendoza. She's best known for her band Y La Bamba, which caught the national ear with its infectious blend of mexican folk and indie rock, and her newest project, Tiburones, was voted one of the city’s best new bands in Willamette Week last year and has an album slated for November. And rejoice, all ye Y La Bamba lovers: two and a half years after disbanding the group, Mendoza is picking the mantle back up with a new lineup. She is currently crowdfunding to record a new Y La Bamba album. 32:35 - Lost Lander broke onto the Portland scene in 2012 with the album “DRRT.” It was one of those dreamy local collaborations — singer-songwriter Matt Sheehy and producer Brent Knopf, the acoustic and the electronic. As Lost Lander toured, it evolved into a four piece. 37:18 - Historically, The Helio Sequence has disappeared into its studio for months — if not a year — to fine tune its albums, which is why the duo only has five albums under its belt after nearly 18 years playing together. But the band changed the rules of the game for its eponymous sixth album. Forget polishing in secret; they decided to take on a little challenge called the 20-song game and then let their friends vote on the tracklist. They told us about letting go during an opbmusic session. 41:18 - We close the show with a goodbye to someone who breathed joy into Portland’s music scene. Dave Camp was a renaissance artist, Portland style. He played and sang with a slew of bands. He was a central figure in the colorful, art rock project the Nowhere Band, which performed the Beatles White Album every Christmas. He had his own band, a psychedelic, disco glam extravaganza, Stereovision, and was in the middle of writing a graphic novel trilogy with the same name. And by day, he composed music for commercials and documentaries like “Andy Warhol’s Factory People” and “The Wanted.” Camp had one of those prolific Facebook feeds that reads like the intimate musings of a modern mystic. It was there where he described his months-long struggle with stomach cancer in posts of extreme candour and grace – posts that rallied a community around him and continue to deeply affect friends and strangers both. For concert dates and videos of most of these performances, see our show page: http://www.opb.org/radio/programs/stateofwonder/segment/state-of-wonder-july-25-2015-summer-music-special
We kick off the Memorial Day Weekend (and dare we say summer) with a show about music and makers. 1:25 - Dan Vidmar of Shy Girls talks about his new mixtape release and the challenges of keeping emotional honesty in performance. 11:55 - Where are they? A screaming lack of women artists on the summer festival circuit.16:25 - Josh Lifton of Crowd Supply and Kelley Roy of ADX Portland on makers' mad month of May.26:50 - An opbmusic Studio Session with Helio Sequence.33:30 - Producer Aaron Scott checks in from the Southeast Oregon Symposium on the Arts and Economic Development.35:05 - Philip Glass, in conversation with Portland Opera General Director Christopher Mattaliano at a Powell's Books event.
The long time indie duo's new album is self titled hinting at a new beginning for the band by adding an element thats been missing from the past albums, spontaneity.
This week, Dan and Dan try to answer the question 'Is The Album Dead?'. Listen to hear which Dan has the most optimism in the art of the album and which predicts its demise! In addition, the guys react to rumors of The Replacements recording new music and investigate the future of FM radio in Norway during the two-minute drill. PLUS, hear our Songs of the Week including new music from the Philly rockers Sheer Mag and a delightfully catchy tune from the band The Helio Sequence!
On this week’s episode of SMI Radio, we welcome back two of the festival organizers, Kevin Sur and Phil O’Sullivan, to update us on some of the cool happenings at Timber! 2013. You will hear featured music from the participating artists and they talk specifically about some of the activities that make their event much more than just another music festival. Timber! will feature the brilliant Andrew Joslyn and his Passenger String Quartet. Andrew has been a busy man of late working with several prominent Northwest artists. Recently Joslyn could be seen on stage with the likes of Duff McKagen, The Local Strangers. His lovely string arrangements can be heard on the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis mega-hit album, The Heist. I recently caught up with Andrew at one of my favorite interview spots in The Emerald City. You will hear that conversation as well as some tracks that Andrew lent his talents to.
Artist Home epitomizes this through their efforts in the staging of innovative and popular outdoor music events, such as Doe Bay Fest, which spawned the documentary Welcome to Doe Bay (see video below), Slackfest and Summer Bonfire Series. This summer, the good folks that brought you these great happenings are putting together another special event dubbed Timber! Outdoor Music Festival. Timber! is the new outdoor music festival from Artist Home Presents uniting music, community, and the beautiful natural environment of the Pacific Northwest. To present Timber!, Artist Home is partnering with King County Parks to set the festival in the rural splendor of Carnation, Washington. The current festival lineup consists of The Helio Sequence, Fruit Bats, Lemolo, Bryan John Appleby, Kithkin, River Giant, Ten Speed Music and just recently announced, Thee Quasi celebrating their 20th year as a band!! Hobosexual, Passenger String Quartet (stay tuned to find out who they’ll be collaborating with!), Pablo Trucker, and the first of the TOMF lineup of official “buskers” Nu Klezmer Army. Tickets went on sale March 12, and are available for purchase here. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio, two of the festival organizers, Kevin Sur and Phil O’Sullivan, stop by the studio to talk about Artist Home events. You can hear featured music from the participating artists, and Kevin and Phil reveal additional acts just added to the bill.

When only six survivors remained, out of ammunition, a bayonet charge was conducted in which three of the six were killed. The remaining three wounded men were brought before the Mexican general, who allowed them to return to France as an honour guard for the body of Capitaine Danjou. The captain had a wooden hand which was stolen during the battle; it was later returned to the Foreign Legion and is now kept in a case in the Foreign Legion museum at Aubagne, and paraded annually on Camerone Day. It is the Foreign Legion's most precious relic.
