This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on the discussion of and engagement with the Oracle (aka the Book of Changes or the I Jing) on the part of Juliana Frink and the Abendsens. Juliana is able to determine that Hawthorne Abendsen used the Oracle to write his alternate history novel The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. This then raises a question: Why would the Oracle choose to write a book? The answer is that through that, it reveals the truth about the world that is the setting for the novel, namely that the world in which the Axis powers won World War II is not the true or real world To support my ongoing work, go to my Patreon site - www.patreon.com/sadler If you'd like to make a direct contribution, you can do so here - www.paypal.me/ReasonIO - or at BuyMeACoffee - www.buymeacoffee.com/A4quYdWoM You can find over 3000 philosophy videos in my main YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/user/gbisadler You can get a copy of Man In The High Castle here - https://amzn.to/45yJ2ie
This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on the experience that Nobusuke Tagomi has when he concentrates on a piece of jewelry produced by the Edfrank company in the park, and finds himself transported to an alternate America in a world in which the Allies won the war instead of losing it. The experience allows him to recenter himself from his trauma resulting from killing the two SD Kommandos in the Nippon Times Building. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on he new and original American jewelry produced by the Edfrank Custom Jewelry company and placed on consignment with Robert Childan's American Artistic Handcrafts, Inc. store. Childan gives Paul Kasoura one of the pieces, and there is a very interesting exchange between the two of them. Paul asserts that Frank Frink's jewelry is without aesthetic value, particularly wabi, but possesses a higher transcendent value of wu, placed in the artifact by its maker. Paul then proposes to Robert that the pieces can be used to mass-produce a line of copies for poor people in South America, which places Robert in a crisis that demands a decision be made. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on one of the key sub-plots in the novel, the Sicherheitsdienst or SD commando attack on the Nippon Times Building, aimed at capturing the Abwehr operative Rudolph Wegner. This takes place while Wegner is meeting with General Tedeki and Nobusuke Tagomi to reveal Operation Dandelion. Tagomi kills the two SD agents who manage to reach their room, and then later confronts the Reichscounsul Reiss over the attack. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on a plot-point only revealed in the last third of the book, but which has been set up as Tagomi organizes a meeting between the Swedish Baynes (actually the Abwehr agent Wegner) and retired Japanese general Tedeki). Baynes/Wegner reveals the existence and readiness of a Nazi plot for attaining world domination, Operation Dandelion, which involves a massive nuclear attack on Japan. This poses a dilemma, since Goebels, who is in process of consolidating his power, is in favor of Operation Dandelion, but Heydrich and the SD/SS are against the operation. Wegner suggests that the Japanese government should support the "most malignant part of German society", Heydrich and the police. This means collaborating with evil in order to prevent evil of a different sort and on a greater scale. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on one of the characters central to the story, the Swiss Nazi assassin, on a mission to kill the "man in the high castle", Hawthorne Abendsen, the author of The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. He poses very convincingly as a bitter Italian veteran and trucker, who hooks up with Juliana Frink and proposes they go meet Abendsen. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on one of the main characters of the work, the dealer in American antiquities, Robert Childan, who is a person beset by multiple ambiguities. He accepts the racial hierarchy imposed by the Nazis and the Japanese, but also reacts against it. He suffers from an inferiority complex towards the Japanese, desires to be accepted by them, but also believes them at points to be a merely imitative people. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on one of the most central characters in the work, one who arguably provides the most consistent moral perspective throughout the novel, Nobusuke Tagomi, who is a Trade Mission official in the Pacific States of America. He is a person who values ethical action and intentions, and who is repulsed by the evil he sees the Nazis engaged in throughout the work. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on the role that the ancient Chinese work and practice of divination, The Book Of Changes (Yi Jing/I Ching), generally referred to as "The Oracle". It is used by a number of the characters in the Pacific States of America and in the Rocky Mountain States within the novel, and for more than one purpose. Nobusuke Tagomi, Frank Frink, and Juliana Frink consult the oracle for guidance in preparing for and making decisions about important matters. This lecture discusses key ideas from the 20th Century American science-fiction short story writer and novelist, Philip K. Dick's novel The Man In The High Castle It focuses specifically on the power struggles going on within the Third Reich of the alternate history in the 1960s, as the current chancellor and Führer Martin Bormann dies. The main Nazi leaders who are in the running for becoming the next chancellor and head of the Nazi party are Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels, Reinhard Heydrich, Baldur von Schirach, and Arthur Seyss-Inquart. We look at the assessments of each of these potential leaders, and also at the tendencies of the Nazi regime to promote "internecine conflict".

For classic science fiction and horror fans, the name Richard Matheson is not lost on them. With an impressive resume of short stories, novels and script work for both television and film, it's no wonder Matheson's body of work would be in high demand for adaptation. Sadly, due to the time period in which his works were created, some modern audiences find his work dated. That shouldn't matter when Hollywood comes to call, right? Whats up Fire tribe! Stallions you are, wondrous and magnificent existors. I have grown incredibly fond of the work of Philip Dick, his "sci-fi" is so much more than that, and seemingly the populus agrees, its more philosophical than it is based on the idea of aliens, especially in his later works, specifically VALIS. This speech is elaborately detailed with the concepts of time travel, multiple dimensions, the kingdom of heaven not being somewhere beyond the veil of our atmosphere, more amongst the many layers of side scrolling reality that we experience. There is video of PKD and his speech in france in 1977 though, its chopped down because the organizers of the science fiction convention needed him to save time for other speakers, which is a shame, I initially wanted to layer his voice over some music that i would make, though its from the 70's and the audio is quite frankly SHIT. So i decided to read it aloud myself, and add in some music. When i went to go find the transcript, i found the FULL LENGTH SPEECH! originally written how it was to be presented, so lucky us. the only available audio version on the internet, here in your hands and soon to be in your ears, please make sure to take your time with this, its deep. if you need to pause thats absolutely okay, please do, but come back to it. consider these topics and sit deeply with the wonderment of the ideas of time travel, and the layers of vast consciousness. with love Homie Romie feel free to reach out to me here Risingfromtheashespod@protonmail.com https://t.me/risingftashes
A brave new world or was it the long way home–for these men. And, A hideous nightmare seemed the culture of Williamson's world–to men who knew nothing of beauty. Survey Team and Souvenir by Philip K. Dick, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. We're seeing phenomenal growth all over the world and we cannot thank you enough for your support. The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast is being heard in more than 100 countries around the world. To say thank you we've got a special announcement that will be made when we go live on YouTube Thursday night at 8 PM in New York. We'll answer your questions and let you know what stories are already narrated and on the way, and some of those we are working on for future episodes. Let's kick off our double dose of Philip K. Dick with a story from the May 1954 issue of Fantastic Universe Magazine. Our story can be found on page 84. Survey Team by Philip K. Dick… Our second story was printed in the pages of Fantastic Universe Magazine five months after our previous story. The magazine had this to say about the now legendary author. “Philip Dick's characters have an exciting way of letting their logically-motivated self-interest lead them straight down the flaming road to ruin. We suspect that it is this distinctly individual approach which has made him one of the most admired and widely read science fiction writers of the past few years.” Let's turn to page 41 for Souvenir by Philip K. Dick… In two days on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Neither Peter Horn nor his wife ever expected that their child would be a small blue pyramid of another dimension! The Shape of Things by Ray Bradbury. That's in just two days on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.Support the show

Dick's speech "The Android and the Human", given at the Vancouver SF Convention at the University of British Columbia, in March 1972. It focuses specifically on Dick's view that the distinction between the mechanical or electrical and the animate is beginning to break down in late modernity. TRASCRIZIONE [Translation below] Ma l'intelligenza artificiale sogna? E soprattutto, cosa sogna? Sogna forse pecore elettriche? Farò adesso, chiederò la rivincita.TRANSLATIONBut does artificial intelligence dream? More importantly, what do they dream about? Do they dream of electric sheep? Yes, I'm paraphrasing the book written in 1968 by Philip Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the title may not mean much to you, it was translated into Italian as The Android Hunter, a literal translation would be, precisely, 'but do androids dream of electric sheep?' and I'm sure, again, this title might not mean much to you, but it is the book on which Blade Runner was based, one of the most beautiful science fiction and philosophy and human relations and 80s stuff ever made, ever seen. Why am I telling you about Blade Runner, or rather the story behind Blade Runner? That of mistaking computers, indeed androids for human beings. Because I was beaten by a chat box, you know those things, those computer programs that answer questions by pretending to be human beings. That is, it usually specifies 'I'm a chatbot, ask me what you want' when you have to ask questions, what do I know, about your plane ticket, if there issomething wrong with some service, often the first step, if you don't want to put yourself on phone hold for hours, you can often resort to having a chat with a chat box, which, usually, let's say the simplest problems can also solve them, otherwise it usually asks you 'do you want to talk to an operator?'Here, I was beaten by a game that you can play online, I will put the link, where in 2 minutes you have to figure out whether the interlocutor is a human being or a chat box, a program written for the computer. The fact that there's only 2 minutes is a little stressful because you enter the site, there's a window tells you "do you want to choose a topic or do I give a question?" if you choose the topic you ask the first question, otherwise he or she gives it to you (which is the computer? I don't know, it's an 'it', in Italian there is no neuter gender). And I chose whatever, you give me th etopic, and he said, "What is your spirit animal?" And I asked it. And it said, "A fox." Then I don't even remember what I asked anymore. I've asked a couple of questions, but it's difficult because you only have 2 minutes and you see the clock ticking and there's the angst of not knowing what to ask.But the questions, the answers it gave me were witty, I thought it was a human being and no, it was a bot. So bot one Cristina zero. Let's start again. Now I will, I will ask for a rematch.LINKIl gioco online, due minuti di conversazione per scoprire se è umano o no Human or Not https://www.humanornot.ai/
Beyond Lies the Wub & The Skull by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Two stories in the inimitable Philip Dick style. What is a Wub? A 400 pound slovenly, fat, ungainly, drooling animal that looks like a cross between a walrus and an enormous hog? Well, yes that is pretty much what he looks like and for 50 cents, a good bargain no matter how he tastes. The hungry spaceship crew expect to find out. Of course the Wub may not entirely agree but it doesn't have much to say about it. The second story, The Skull, is a skillful mesh of time travel, unscrupulous governments, prisoners, and religion. With an assassin thrown in for good measure. Enjoy!
The Eyes Have It & Tony and the Beetles by Philip K. Dick audiobook. Aliens have invaded the earth! Horrible one celled creatures disguised as normal human beings ! Well, at least that is what it seems to the author. Yes, The Eyes Have It is a whimsical story, making gentle fun of certain writing styles, but only a topflight science-fictionist like Philip Dick , we thought, could have written this story, in just this way. Tony and the Beetles takes place far in the future when Earth's enormous colonial empire is well established but the question is, how long can it last? 10 year old Tony grows up fast when history catches up with the human race. A sobering look at human history .. and our probable future. Two very different stories but both entertaining.
That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.A few weeks ago Blind Voyager said and I quote, “It would be fun to do an episode of several short, very short sci-fi stories." Thanks for your request Blind Voyager and today's episode would never have happened if not for you!I came across several interesting short stories months ago but it's tough to sell a 4 minute audiobook and the thought of a super short podcast didn't appeal to me either. However, when we got the request from Blind Voyager the light bulb went on and I began planning today's podcast. After you have a chance to listen, and you will want to listen all the way to the end, let us know what you think by commenting and tell us if we should do another episode of the The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast with several super short sci-fi stories. If you'd picked up a copy of the April 1942 Astounding Science Fiction you would have discovered this super short story by Isaac Asimov, "Time Pussy"...The next two stories by Philip K. Dick didn't appear in a science fiction magazine when they were written. And they weren't credited to Philip K. Dick. These stories were published in the Berkeley Daily Gazette. And, Harry spent three years in space waitingto get home to Earth—and his family. They werewaiting for him too—that is, for his corpse...Two science fiction short stories next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Hi, I'm your host, Scott Miller, sci-fi fanatic and audiobook narrator and I want to thank you for listening to The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast with at least one lost sci-fi short story in every episode. We welcome your comments, thoughts, and suggestions. Send an email to scott@lostscifi.com.Chris Williams sent us this email recently, “Hey Scott, I love the Lost Sci-Fi Podcast but you said Planet of the Apes was your favorite sci-fi franchise by far. What about Star Wars? That's my favorite. Keep up the good work, I listen to your podcast every week!” Thanks, Chris. I do love the Star Wars movie franchise and you got me thinking. I think the reason I put Planet of the Apes as my all-time favorite sci-fi franchise is because it began when I was a little kid and I'd seen all 5 of the apes movies before Star Wars was released in 1977. I saw Star Wars just days after I graduated high school in Denison, Iowa in what is now known as the Donna Reed Theater, named after the iconic actress who was born and raised in Denison. Reed, born Donna Mullenger, starred in the 1946 Christmas classic “It's a Wonderful Life” alongside Jimmy Stewart.Which begs the question is “It's a Wonderful Life” a science fiction movie? Before you say no, think about it. George Bailey played by Stewart is suicidal when he's visited by an angel when George says, “I wish I'd never been born.” The angel grants his wish and now the movie switches to an alternate timeline where George Bailey was never born! Sound like sci-fi to me. What do you think? Is “It's a Wonderful Life” a science fiction movie? We'd love to hear your thoughts, scott@lostscifi.com.Seven years after “It's a Wonderful Life” was released a new science fiction magazine debuted in June 1953. Science Fiction Stories Magazine would publish once in 53 and once in 54 before releasing multiple issues over the next 6 years. The inaugural issue was 132 pages and sold for 35 cents. I found a good to very good copy on sale for only $25, which sounds like a bargain to me considering it contains a remarkable short story from the amazing Philip K. Dick. Turn with me to page 127, A little whimsy, now and then, makes for good balance. Theoretically, you could find this type of humor anywhere. But only a topflight science-fictionist, we thought, could have written this story, in just this way….From Science Fiction Stories Magazine in June 1953 The Eyes Have It by Philip K. Dick

The nature of reality may be a complex philosophical question, but from a psychological viewpoint, reality is largely a question of adaptation to the truths of our inner and outer worlds. How well do we manage psychic life and the electric bill? Science fiction writer Philip Dick pithily states: “Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” Multiple realities challenge us. We live in shared social realities, from embracing niceties to being steeped in beliefs and a need to belong. We also may access the objective realities of verifiable facts and scientific data. And we experience subjective realities of emotion, intuition, and unconscious influences. We can feel our feelings, differentiate between levels of reality, and choose which to apply to a particular situation or decision. Unclouded acceptance of reality is medicinal. Here's the dream we analyzed: “I found myself somehow back living in the attic of a property I managed years ago, an old parish house. I was very comfortable with this and glad to be there. A high school sweetheart came to visit unexpectedly, and we fell into our old way of being together rather quickly. We had been very close when young, and in real life, we maintained contact for years, though at the time of this dream, we had not spoken for a long time. I was excited at the prospect of rekindling our relationship anew as adults and was a little nervous. She asked where she could smoke a cigarette, and I suggested the roof. It was a warm, inviting night, and although I had quit smoking decades ago, I felt young again and accepted her offer of a cigarette. We were on a flat roof with a parapet. She went to sit on the parapet wall and purposefully leaned back, intentionally flinging herself off of the roof. There was a dreadful moment of suspended time before I heard her body hit the ground many floors below. Terrified, I started running down the flights of stairs toward ground level. At one of the landings, I encountered the building's plumber, an older man I had known for years who was working on some old piping. I started to tell him what just happened, but he knew already, and with incredible calm, told me there was nothing to be done and to just forget about it. This hardly registered as I continued my frantic flight down the stairs, only to discover that the stairwell never ended or that I was somehow lost, even though there was only one way down. The further I went, lights were burnt out and the steps increasingly irregular, forcing me to slow down and test each step." REFERENCES: C.G. Jung. The Function of Religious Symbols.

Featuring Daniele Vicari e Alberto Prunetti. Prendiamo tre film a caso, tre parabole su vita, non morte e miracoli di uomini in carne, ossa e capitale: Jobs, The Founder, The Social Network. Apple, MacDonalds, Facebook. Imperi virtuali e reali, senza confini.

There is little doubt that the New Testament makes several unique claims concerning Jesus. Some of these exclusive comments regard claims that Jesus Christ was deity, or that He is the sole path to salvation, or that He was raised from the dead. The claims and deeds of Jesus become even more distinct when compared with the founders of other religious traditions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, or Zoroastrianism. Crucially, the claims and actions of other religions founders encompass highly significant historical issues. The most common problem involves the time intervals between the claimed teachings or events and their recording, with usual gaps of hundreds to well over a thousand years. In contrast, the Gospels were written within a few decades after Jesus. Another significant problem concerns identifying when some founders such as Buddha or Zoroaster actually lived, involving differences of a thousand years or more. Hinduism faces huge problems regarding the extant date of the Upanishads, whether Hindu scholars think Krishna even lived, and treating the potential millennia gap with the Bhagavad Gita. Finally, scholars have too often placed world religious claims approximately on a par while failing to look critically at the historical case for the New Testament writings and events vis a vis non Christian claims. This has led to various confusions such as viewing all religious claims as being equally true or likewise historical, or that one religious truth automatically requires the truth of others. Overly critical attitudes toward Christian beliefs while hardly posing any similarly tough questions to the almost always unevidenced, non Christian beliefs reveals a scholarly double standard. This Postmodern Realities podcast episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Benjamin Shaw about his coauthored with Gary Habermas feature article The Historical Uniqueness of Jesus Christ among the Founders of the Worlds Major Religions in the Volume 41 4 2018 issue of the JOURNAL
Philip Dick Man in High Castle
Want to get a visual of what our future may look like? The best thing to do may be to grab a sci-fi book off of the shelf. Over the years there has been a multitude of great science fiction books and movies that have been released. Authors like H.G. Wells, George Orwell, Philip Dick and Orson Scott have created fantastic futuristic worlds for us to think about. Movies such as The Matrix, Avatar, Interstellar and Total Recall have been very popular entertainment. But what is the role of science fiction in the future of work? Works of science fiction, whether they are books, movies or TV shows, allow us to get a glimpse into what the future could be like. They have allowed us to see things like robots, AI, connected devices and self driving cars before they were mainstream realities. It is one thing to read research, data reports and to look at the numbers to see projections 10 to 20 years out. It is another thing completely to be able to physically view practical (or extreme) ways in which different technologies and advancements could be implemented into our world. It is hard to grasp what the future could look like when all you have is data and numbers. Works of science fiction movies and books help paint a picture that makes it easier to visualize what could be. So the next time you are wondering what the future may hold 10 to 20 years down the line, pick up a good science fiction book or go out and see a science fiction movie. You may get a good glimpse into what’s to come.

Tessa Dick author of My Life on the Edge of Reality Tessa's memoirs are about her paranormal experiences and those of her husband Philip K. Dick (*Bladerunner;* *Minority Report*, *Philip K. Dick: Remembering Firebright*; *Tessa B. Dick: My Life on the Edge of Reality*) She also wrote about those experiences in the form of a novel. (*The Darkening of the Light*) As a small child, Tessa had an angel looking over her shoulder and giving her advice. She also suffered from severe fear of monsters in the dark -- demons and shadow creatures. As an adult, she shared the experience of divine intervention while her husband heard what he believed to be the voice of God in the form of the Torah, Logos or Sophia (Holy Wisdom, the female member of the Trinity). He also met people who claimed to be from our future. They said that they were trying to fix our mistakes in order to prevent the disaster that nearly destroyed their world. Tessa's books are available from Amazon.com
