"MARK STEVENS: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH" The name MARK STEVENS probably doesn't ring a bell with moviegoers today. However, he's one of those actors who once you see him on screen, you say, “Oh, yeah, THAT guy!” Still, at one time, he was a very in-demand leading man who was always compelling and had a tough-guy likability that brightened up many a hum-drum movie. He may not have reached the upper echelon of fame like contemporaries ALAN LADD or DANA ANDREWS, but he certainly left his mark — particularly in “The Dark Corner” with a pre-TV LUCILLE BALL. Like CHARLES LAUGHTON, DICK POWELL, and IDA LUPINO, he also became a pioneer of the actor-turned-director. Today, we take a look at his long and varied career and celebrate him as our Star of the Month. This episode was originally released on January 6, 2015. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season, The Old Man is Still Alive. This is the story of how Bette Davis evolved from a wannabe starlet who was constantly told she was too ugly for movies, to the most powerful woman in Hollywood, by playing heroines that had never been seen on screen before — to borrow a term from Davis herself, sympathetic “bitches.” After Pearl Harbor, the tenacious Bette became the figurehead of the Hollywood Canteen, a nightclub for servicemen staffed by stars, which was the locus of the industry's most visible support of the troops on the home front. The Hollywood Canteen was a catalyst for propaganda in more ways than one, aims Hollywood furthered by telling the story of the Hollywood Canteen in a movie called, um, Hollywood Canteen, starring Davis, John Garfield, Barbara Stanwyck, Peter Lorre and other celebrities as “themselves.” The movie and most press accounts of the Canteen portray it as a miraculous force for good in the world, which it probably was, but that narrative leaves out a lot, including illicit affairs, a murder, and an FBI investigation whose findings would have an impact on the blacklist of the following decade To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. Although Miss Davis received every accolade an actor can get, our guest asserts that Bette Davis has not been adequately recognized for her on-and-off-screen collaborative efforts to combat racism and support the African American community. In her latest book, entitled “Bette Davis Black and White”, she provides an illuminating exposé of Miss Davis' little known behind the scenes work, such as supporting and mentoring black actors, desegregating the dance floor of the legendary Hollywood Canteen, collaborating with Hattie McDaniel during the war to entertain black servicemen, and joining several black labour organizations. Julia is the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence and Professor of English and American Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English at Northwestern University. This is another of our salutes to the music and service that the Stage Door Canteens provided to military personnel during World War II. The Stage Door Canteen refers to the famous World War II-era Times Square social club for soldiers temporarily stationed in New York City awaiting deployment, usually to the war in Europe. It opened March 2, 1942, in a space underneath the 44th Street Theatre. The canteen was open seven nights a week and offered servicemen dancing, entertainment, food and nonalcoholic drinks, and even opportunities to rub shoulders with celebrities. And it all was FREE. The New York acting community did everything. They would perform songs, comedy, and short versions of the plays and musicals that were playing on Broadway. Actresses also served as hostesses and dancing partners. The New York Stage Door Canteen was immediately popular. The space was 40-by-80 feet and could accommodate 500 people, but it was filled to capacity from the start. Seven other canteens were later located in Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco and Newark and Los Angeles. In 1943 the success of New York’s Stage Door Canteen prompted a movie about the popular service men's center and featured stars of the big screen and popular Big Bands. One of the many praiseworthy qualities of the canteens was their credo. They were open to all servicemen of every Allied nation, and without any form of segregation. As the war dragged on, the popularity of the canteens never wavered. By November 1945, Stage Door Canteens were operating in eight US cities and London and Paris. Together, they entertained and fed 11 million Allied servicemen. The only canteen to rival the original’s fame was the Hollywood Canteen in Los Angeles, thanks to its proximity to the country’s biggest stars. Instead of theater people, movie stars and crew members did the work. Hollywood Canteen, the movie, was the fourth highest grossing film of 1944. Watch both movies. You’ll be entertained and hear some great music. If you ever visit the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, you’ll see a replica of the Stage Door Canteen. Don't Fence Me In was written by Cole Porter and Robert Fletcher and Roy Rogers sang in the 1944 movie – Hollywood Canteen. The idea of wide open spaces has always been a metaphor for freedom and healthy living…   But here we are in the midst of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and we are rethinking the safety and security of our open spaces. Even when we stroll in the park, we’re told we need to keep our distance.   It’s forced us to rethink how we use outdoor public space, how we re-organize our urban infrastructure. It won’t just change the way we use our parks and parking lots – it will have a direct effect on the way urban transportation – both public and private – as we learn to live in the COVID era.   John Surico is a freelance journalist based in the UK. This weeks episode explores a case close one of the hosts. Liberty 'Libby' Rose Templeman was an adventurous and kind young woman, having moved from England to New Zealand. She loved bright colours and being on the stage, maybe one day becoming an actress. However, those dreams were cut short when someone took Libby's life in 2008. Amy goes over the case which took her friends life.  The next case returns to the familiar territory of Hollywood during the Second World War. A young woman named Georgette Bauerdorf went to work at the Hollywood Canteen, an idea one one Bette Davis came up with. Sadly, Bauerdorf would not reach her dreams of stardom as Rachael discusses the case.   As always, the episode finishes with a dumb criminal.    If you like Spree, please consider giving a 5 star review and follow us on social media. Twenty year old Georgette Bauerdorf was an oil fortune heiress living in West Hollywood in the 1940s. A very giving and kind woman, Georgette garnered a reputation for offering money, meals and even places to stay for soldiers preparing to ship out for World War 2.In her evenings, Georgette worked as a junior hostess at the famous Hollywood Canteen, a club designed to give soliders a last good taste of America before heading to Europe or the Pacific. Here Georgette met and befriended many soldiers, dancing, laughing and spending time together. In October of 1944, Georgette had plans to fly to Texas to meet a soldier she'd gotten close to. Unfortunately, she would never make the trip. On the evening of October 11th, Georgette was murdered in her apartment and seventy-five years later, her killer's identity remains unknown. Who murdered Georgette and why? Was it jealousy? Was it random? Or was it committed by someone she knew and trusted?Social Media:https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodhttps://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/https://www.facebook.com/groups/traceevidencepodMusic Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/Sources: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/39060607/georgette-elise-bauerdorf | https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/constance-cartwright-obituary?pid=170213717 | https://www.google.com/maps/place/8493+Fountain+Ave,+West+Hollywood,+CA+90069/@34.093728,-118.3764941,18z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c2bebc23e95437:0x48fb556a7394d15d!8m2!3d34.093015!4d-118.3758772 | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Dandridge | https://wikivisually.com/wiki/Georgette_Bauerdorf | https://prezi.com/p/yu8rgto37m1h/the-murder-of-georgette-bauerdorf/ | http://www.iamnotastalker.com/2014/10/13/the-el-palacio-apartments/ | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Service_Organizations | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Canteen | https://ladailymirror.com/2018/12/27/dec-27-1947-youth-questioned-in-georgette-bauerdorf-killing/ | https://the-line-up.com/georgette-bauerdorf-unsolved | https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1817&dat=19441013&id=5uU-AAAAIBAJ&sjid=E00MAAAAIBAJ&pg=6514,4156220 | https://morbidology.com/a-hollywood-crime-georgette-bauerdorf/ | https://www.unsolvedcasebook.com/georgette-bauerdorf/ | https://ladailymirror.com/2014/12/02/georgette-bauerdorf-an-unsolved-murder-part-29/ | https://www.newspapers.com/image/1095468/?terms=george%2Bbauerdorf | https://www.newspapers.com/image/587752800/?terms=georgette%2Bbauerdorf | https://www.newspapers.com/image/569363268/?terms=georgette%2Bbauerdorf | https://www.newspapers.com/image/380784506/?terms=georgette%2Bbauerdorf | https://www.newspapers.com/image/380780978/?terms=georgette%2Bbauerdorf | http://www.georgettebauerdorf.com/?p=5 | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgette_Bauerdorf

My guest for The Blonde Bombshell series, April VeVea and I talk pin up queen Betty Grable. I have to admit musicals are not my favorite genre so I have not seen many Betty movies. Betty was another Blondeshell that had an incredibly pushy stage mother. She was truly awful. Betty became a star pretty early. She dated the notorious womanizer Artie Shaw, little known to her, Artie was also dating Judy Garland. Both were shocked when they found out he married Lana Turner. This guy was something else..Betty dated George Raft for two years, waiting patiently for him to divorce his wife. She realized it was never going to happen. She met Harry James at the Hollywood Canteen and the rest was history. We talk Betty's career, marriage, children. It's a good show. Lots of Betty things I never knew before.   Thanks so much to April for joining me.    www.classicblondes.com   Mostly thanks for listening. Film critics Diana Saenger and James Colt Harrison drop by Movie Addict Headquarters to salute Bette Davis, one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. Davis received two Oscars for her extraordinary work in Dangerous and Jezebel. She became known as the intense actress who could play a variety of strong and complex characters. The Internet Movie Data Base lists 124 acting credits for this remarkable star. That list includes such diverse films as All about Eve, Now Voyager, The Letter, The Virgin Queen, A Pocketful of Miracles, Mr. Skeffington, Dark Victory, Dead Ringer, The Catered Affair, Hollywood Canteen and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? An example of the enduring interest in Bette Davis, Feud -- FX’s new limited series -- focuses on her stormy relationship with Joan Crawford. Susan Sarandon portrays Davis, and Jessica Lange plays Crawford. What inspired casting!  Saenger is the founder of Classic Movie Guide and Harrison is a film historian who contributes movie commentary to a variety of outlets including Classic Movie Guide and Review Express. This episode is dedicated to Robert Osborne, the wonderful host of Turner Classic Movies who passed away on March 6, 2017.

Cultural memory of World War II frequently draws on swing music and the USO dance floor as symbols of how the country came together in support of the war effort. Frequently, the term “the Greatest Generation” is used to exemplify patriotism and self-sacrifice. Digging beyond nostalgic remembrances, Sherrie Tucker‘s Dance Floor Democracy: The Social Geography of Memory at the Hollywood Canteen (Duke University Press, 2014) explores how race, gender, social class, and other social cleavages shaped the dance floor and produced a variety of responses to the war effort. Tucker questions the accuracy of common representations of World War II culture. In its place, she offers a more nuanced account of the social and cultural politics of the era. The podcast explores the war, the racial politics of swing music, integration and race relations, oral history and how to write cultural history.
