On this episode of One Symphony, conductor Devin Patrick Hughes interviews Henry Fogel, a prominent figure in the orchestral music field. Fogel discusses his early life in music, his exciting journey in radio, and his passion for making symphonic music more accessible. They also delve into Fogel's contribution to orchestras as a director and a manager. From his beginnings in a home where Broadway musicals were the high end of musical taste, to his rise as a key figure in the world of orchestral music, Fogel's insights on board members and anecdotes about conductors provide a unique window into the business side of the symphony orchestra. Henry Fogel has served as President and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, where he significantly impacted the orchestral landscape by supporting and consulting with over 190 orchestras during his tenure. His leadership as President of the Chicago Symphony for 18 years saw substantial growth in the organization's endowment and community engagement efforts. Henry's extensive career also includes leadership positions at the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C., and the New York Philharmonic. He is actively involved in various nonprofit boards and serves as Chair of the Chicago Classical Music Recording Foundation. Henry's contributions to the American symphonic landscape have been recognized through honorary doctorate degrees and many awards, including the League of American Orchestras' Gold Baton Award. Beyond his professional achievements, Fogel is an accomplished narrator and producer, sharing his passion for classical music over the radio waves for 5 decades. Henry enjoys spending time with his children, grandchildren, and pursuing his interest in Chinese cuisine. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. To the general amazement of musical circles, Aleksander Tansman, a citizen of Lódz, a young student of law, and a student of Piotr Rytel and Henryk Melcer swept all three prizes (the Grand Prix and two honorable mentions) at the first Warsaw composition competition, organized in independent Poland in 1919. Owing to this spectacular success, he then organized his first composition concert in Lódz and Warsaw. During the concert held on the 27th of February 1919 in Lódz, he performed together with Eli Kochanski his first three compositions for cello and piano, including Sonata No.1 (Allegro, Adagio, Fugue), written in 1918. The manuscripts later went missing; however, the fact that they once existed and the record of favorable critical reviews after the concert proves the young composer's interest in the cello as a solo instrument. I Cavatine Moderato13 II Sicilienne Andante grazioso14 III Rondine Allegro ma non troppo15 IV Serenade AllegrettoHelp support our show by purchasing this album at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.comThis album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).
Donald Macleod surveys the life and music of the elusive French composer, Edouard Lalo Even if you know the name, it's possible you might not be able to place the French composer Edouard Lalo date-wise. He was born in Lille in 1823. Berlioz was his senior in age by some twenty years, Saint-Saëns twelve years his junior. Lalo has a direct contemporary in the shape of César Franck, another composer who preferred to stay out of the limelight. As a musician, Lalo cut an independent path, preferring to complete his music studies privately rather than following the accepted route of attending the Paris Conservatoire. Lalo had a retiring nature, a man who appears to have preferred the quiet life. That doesn't mean he wasn't sociable. He seems to have been generally well liked. He lived in Paris from the age of sixteen and mixed with and knew all the leading musical personalities of the day. Aside from the Symphonie espagnole, he wrote several operas, a ballet, a symphony, a whole number of orchestral and chamber works including three piano trios and a string quartet, and something in the region of 30 songs. Trying to get a handle on Lalo isn't straightforward. The first letter that's been preserved dates from 1848, by which time Lalo was in his late twenties. His son Pierre was a primary source of information about his father, but more recent research indicates the picture he drew seems to have been somewhat rose-tinted. The first full length biography in English has yet to be published. Donald Macleod sets about mapping the life and the music of this elusive, yet significant figure in French musical history in a survey that takes us from Lalo's early experiences in Lille, where he first met Berlioz, to his eventual triumph, age sixty on the opera stage with Le roi d'Ys. Mozart's Mannheim has been carefully curated to give 21st-century listeners an idea of the sound world experienced by Mozart when he visited Mannheim in the late 1770s. The southern German city's legendary court orchestra made it a go-to destination for 18th-century cultural pilgrims and the Freiburger Barockorchester (FBO) has chosen to paint a musical portrait of Mannheim for its debut Deutsche Grammophon album. Mozart's Mannheim presents a variety of orchestral and chamber pieces by Cannabich, Danner, Holzbauer, Toeschi and Vogler – including four world premiere recordings – as well as two key works composed by Mozart while he was in the city. The album will be released on 19 May 2023 and the FBO will perform most of its repertoire on 20 May at Schwetzingen Palace, as part of this year's Schwetzingen Festival. Verket ar for violin, cello, piano och stor orkester. [BGM(opening)] Joseph Haydn - Symphony No.49 in F minor - II. No.1 In A Minor, BWV 1041 I Allegro moderato (Daniel Lozakovich version) 22:05'teki müzik: Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata, III Presto Agitato (Valentina Lisitsa version)

Crowds filled the streets around the old Schwarzenberg Palace, desperate to hear Franz Joseph Haydn's new oratorio, The Creation. The premiere was a private performance, and those allowed inside must have an invitation or they would be turned away. Inside, the audience would become so enthralled by Haydn's music, that they could have sworn they saw light shoot out of the composers eyes and they would go about their daily lives for days thinking only about the performance with stars in their eyes. When pianist and From the Top host Christopher O’Riley and cellist Matt Haimovitz recorded a new album of Beethoven’s music, they decided to kick it old school: Chris played an original Broadwood fortepiano and Matt played a Goffriller cello with ox-gut strings. Why would these two artists – often recognized for their arrangements of Radiohead, for performing with young musicians, and for playing classical music in nightclubs – decide to play period instruments? Is there a true benefit to playing music on the instruments it was written for, or is this classical music nerdery? Learn the answers to these and so many other questions in this episode! Audio production by Todd “Todd Rundgren” Hulslander with harshing of mellows by Dacia Clay and editing by Mark DiClaudio.
