As the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference concludes, Music Matters hears from Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, Kathryn McDowell, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Eakin, Executive Chairman of Harrison Parrott, Jasper Parrott, and Professor of Geosystem Science and leader of the group responsible for climate modelling at the University of Oxford, Myles Allen, about the degree to which the classical music industry is delivering its own promises to reduce its impact on the environment. With all eyes on Qatar for the opening of the FIFA World Cup, Tom hears from the BBC's Series producer for Arabic Digital Investigative Documentaries, Rosie Garthwaite, about the construction she witnessed of Doha's opera house in the Katara Cultural Centre. He learns how the country has nurtured both Western art forms and cultural institutions, and the potential projection of soft power. Tom joins the soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Frederick Ballentine during rehearsals for a new production, by English National Opera, of Jake Heggie's It's a Wonderful Life. The composer shares how he adapted the story behind Frank Capra's classic movie, and Tom speaks to the journalist, broadcaster, and author, Matthew Sweet, about the phenomenon of setting operas from film, as well as different roles music plays on both the screen and the stage.

"When I hear Beethoven, I feel like he's reading my mind, reading my soul. It's impossible to comprehend. I compare Beethoven to someone like Da Vinci. Similar level of genius. His music is one of the great treasures we have." On today's program, cellist Pablo Ferrández is here. A colleague of Daniel on stage and a friend offstage, they have a lot talk about when it comes to cello, music, and music's role in modern life. But this is not a conversation where two musicians talk shop. Quite to the contrary-- it's a conversation with appeal to the general public, to even the most casual of listeners or someone with just a passing interest in music. Great music shapes us, it colors every aspect of our lives, it makes itself relevant and indispensable just by virtue of it existing. So where do we turn in these pandemic times when we need music the most? What do musicians do? Why does Beethoven mean so much, so long after his death? Is "relevance" an escape word-- a myth?-- people use when they don't want to fully confront a great work of art? Prizewinner at the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition and SONY Classical exclusive artist, Pablo Ferrández announces himself as a musician of stature. A captivating performer, “Ferrández has the lot: technique, mettle, spirit, authority as a soloist, expressivity and charm” (El Pais). Recent highlights include the debuts at the Hollywood Bowl with Los Angeles Philharmonic under G.Dudamel, with Bayersichen Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra under D. Gatti, with Bamberg Symphony under C. Una historia compleja y con infinidad de ingredientes musicales.

Barefoot, sitting cross-legged at the piano, sometimes even with her own blood streaked across the keys, German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott believes everything should come from your hands. We meet Alice in her rehearsal room at Steinway Haus on a hot day in Munich as she prepares for new live performances in France, Germany and the UK. Alice shares her sense of humour, explores how she interprets music, talks about the colours she adds, what kind of piano she favours, and why she always travels with a Rubik’s Cube. And as Alice says; you don’t have to be educated to listen to classical music; you get educated by listening to it. T-shirts, flip flops, popcorn - all are welcome at a concert with Alice Sara Ott. The pieces come from her new album Nightfall with piano music from Satie, Debussy and Ravel. The album is a personal project for Alice, the recording last year coinciding with her 30th birthday and a sudden illness in her family. The album has taken on an even stronger personal significance for Alice, following her recent diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis.
