W. Michael Hsu is the Founder and CEO of DeepSky, a pioneering virtual CFO firm that functions as the accounting department for entrepreneurs. He was the first professional in the US to adopt and become certified by Xero and the inaugural recipient of the Bill.com Guru Certification. Beyond DeepSky, Michael is the creator of MEASURE x HACK, a methodology designed to help entrepreneurs achieve more while working less. His insights and work have been featured in esteemed publications, including Inc. Magazine, Forbes, CPA Practice Advisor's 40 Under 40, Accounting Today, and AIGA. In this episode… Many entrepreneurs struggle with financial clarity, often operating their businesses without genuinely understanding the numbers behind them. This lack of insight leads to reactive decision-making, missed opportunities, and a constant feeling of being out of control. But what if financial systems could be used not just to track the past but to shape the future? W. Michael Hsu, a financial strategist and creator of a business performance methodology, shares how entrepreneurs can shift their mindset from reactive to intentional. Michael emphasizes empowering business owners through simple, clear financial systems and accountability frameworks. He introduces his MEASURE x HACK approach, which helps leaders understand key metrics and implement strategies that optimize results, offering specific steps to gain control, reduce overwhelm, and create real growth. Tune in to this episode of the Smart Business Revolution Podcast as John Corcoran interviews W. Michael Hsu, Founder and CEO of DeepSky, about designing financial clarity for entrepreneurs. AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs

In this week's edition of the AmiSights Podcast, we talk to Michael Hsu, founder and CEO of DeepSky, an outsourced accounting team that specializes in digital agencies, IT outsourcing companies, and digital media properties. He explains why his mission is to “keep it simple” when helping small business owners with their finances.“Entrepreneurs are incredibly smart. If they know what the problem is, if they know what they need to work on, they can solve it. The problem is that, most of the time, they have no clue. They have no clue that they have a cash flow problem. They have no clue that they have a profit problem. They have no clue that they have an accountability problem, or any of that matter. So, it's just helping them to identify what the problem is.”In today's episode, we'll discuss why it's crucial for entrepreneurs to focus on understanding the bottom line instead of getting caught up solely in top-line revenue, emphasizing the importance of mastering financial basics before layering on the more complex ideas often promoted in the business world. We'll also explore how employees around the globe face similar challenges, regardless of their location.Connect with Michael: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wmichaelhsu/Check out DeepSky: https://www.linkedin.com/company/deepsky/Recorded on 2/11/25

She is the founder & CEO of Digital Self Labs, a Washington D.C.-based Web3 advisory firm. Digital Self Labs is a cross-disciplinary advisory firm combining blockchain software expertise with policy and regulatory strategy. Linda helps clients design and implement innovative solutions that empower individuals and enable interoperability, transparency, and efficiency in the financial and digital sector.  She is also a renowned scholar and educator, with affiliations at Georgetown University Law Center, Duke University Law School, and the Bank for International Settlements. She conducts cutting-edge research and teaches courses on open banking, digital identity, and decentralized finance (DeFi). and has authored several publications and contributed to influential books on these topics. She is a frequent speaker and commentator in the media, and a Forbes contributor. Linda holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School and a master's degree in EU and International Law from Université Toulouse Capitole. She speaks Mandarin Chinese, French and basic German. In this episode of Regulatory Ramblings, she talks to host Ajay Shamdasani about an op-ed piece she wrote which was published by Coindesk entitled “The Biggest Bank Heist in History Is Coming.” The premise and the focus of the discussion is that regulators are permitting banks to tokenize financial assets such as bank deposits, U.S. Treasuries and corporate debt. Yet, they want institutions to use permissioned networks rather than the decentralized blockchains that keep assets safe from hackers. As Linda stated in her article: “In February, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's acting head Michael Hsu announced plans for new rules on operational resilience for large banks with critical operations, including third-party service providers. Critically, that wasn't discussed, however, was that the rules would “treat the use of permissioned networks by the big banks to tokenize real world assets and liabilities, an omission that neglects critical new vulnerabilities for the global financial system.” A key theme of the conversation is that encouraging the use of permissioned networks over permissionless blockchains will inevitably lead to cybersecurity attacks “on a scale previously unknown as the financial system moves to tokenize trillions of dollars' worth of real world assets and liabilities. The biggest bank heist in history is in the making.” “By contrast, most successful crypto hacks usually involve centralized protocols where hackers only need to hack the admin keys of only one or a few actors to gain control and steal digital assets. Similarly, permissioned networks are controlled by only a few parties, so they can be more easily hacked than blockchains maintained by thousands of validators. The concentration of attack vectors in the big banks that control these permissioned networks (or the central banks that control non-blockchain ledgers) is like sticking targets on their backs,” she said. Linda goes on to discuss how she ended up in the legal profession, what drew her to digital assets as a scholar and why she believes the worst attacks against banks have yet to come.HKU FinTech is the leading fintech research and education in Asia. A little less than a year ago, the US financial system was rocked by its first major banking drama since 2008. While the crisis was eventually contained, and only three lenders ended up collapsing, the experience re-ignited an ongoing conversation about the way we rescue troubled lenders. Not only did the Federal Reserve launch a new liquidity program called the Bank Term Funding Program as part of its support to the banking system in 2023, but regulators are now talking about changing existing facilities, including the Federal Home Loan Banks (FHLBs) and the discount window. For instance, Michael Hsu of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency's has proposed that banks be required to tap the discount window and "pre-position" collateral at the facility, just in case they one day need it. In this episode, we speak with Steven Kelly, associate director of research at the Yale University Program on Financial Stability, about the constellation of existing emergency facilities for banks, how they've evolved over time, and the changes that could be made to them now.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He also ponders the human factor, as people feel a sense of “community” in decentralized finance, while also embracing a world that promises to monetize, and transact around, nearly every aspect of their lives.

Michael Hsu has spent the last 10 years working with entrepreneurs and educating them on financial literacy. The world of cash management and cash forecasting is incredibly murky. How do you realistically predict what you're going to make before you make it? As CEOs of a company, you simply cannot be emotionally affected by the day-to-day operations of the business. Money, and lack of it, severely impacts your ability to think big-picture and long-term. Michael isn't sure if we willfully choose not to see the cash flow warning signs or if we simply are unable to see them. So many times an entrepreneur will celebrate the big wins, but then be completely broke the next month after sales drop slightly. There's no reason to put your business through that kind of roller coaster. Bill remembers an example of when his business was profitable. He was doing really well, and then one day his CFO said he had to personally loan the company money so that they could cover and pay all their taxes. Bill was stunned. How was the company doing so well on paper but they still couldn't afford to pay the company taxes?   Interview Links: Sponsored by: Bit.ly/clariontech Deepsky.co Michael on LinkedIn   Resources: Scaling Up Summits (Select Bill Gallagher as your coach during registration for a discount.) If you would like to stay in the loop, subscribe to our Newsletter  To read an edited transcript To watch it as a video The following are the summaries of questions Joanne Z. Tan asked Tim Draper during this one-hour interview on Sept. 23, 2021: Crypto and Bitcoin fluctuated wildly in the last 4 months after our first interview. ... Other than China's cracking down on Bitcoin and crypto, do you see any SYSTEMIC flaws in the crypto's trading mechanism that have caused the wild fluctuation? Examples: Yesterday's 90% drop of Bitcoin on Pyth was caused by computer botching basic math, the day before, the “blackout” at Solana, and the use of robot traders in high frequency crypto trading… What are your thoughts about these systemic flaws, or phenomena, or “growing pain”? It seems that Bitcoin holders are primarily in two large camps: first, highly educated, intelligent and financially secure; second, herd mentality blind followers, some of whom are gamblers. Is that another contributing factor for its extreme volatility since there are far more blind followers than seasoned investors? If so, what can be done about it? Is the lack of circulation and liquidity another reason for its volatility? What caused the malfunction of El Salvador's launch of Bitcoin? Ray Dalio recently said that the value of Bitcoin is “imbued” rather than “intrinsic”. Gold's value is “intrinsic” according to him; the “imbued” value of Bitcoin, he cited, was at least based on the impressive fact that it has never been hacked. He didn't mention that Bitcoin has a limited edition capped at 21 million coins. What do you think of his characterization? Has the definition of “money” changed in any way with the birth and growth of Bitcoin? Does Bitcoin-ownership vs gold-ownership give Bitcoin owners more responsibility, participation, and other new elements of ownership? Ayn Rand brand of libertarian capitalism, in my opinion, was based on the dated view that the world's resources are almost limitless, an idealized understanding of a limitless potential of capitalism. Now, living with global warming, and the realization that first, resources are limited, and second, the window of opportunities is rapidly closing; actions, NOW, by NATIONAL governments are truly needed (in addition to private actions), to reverse climate change. My question is: Could Bitcoin undermine national governments' control of central banking and economic policies, particularly related to governmental spending on sustainable industries? Is there another way to link the usage of crypto directly with sustainability industries? In China a couple of months ago, a great flood happened in a large city, there was no power, no internet. People who were so used to digital payment found themselves needing paper cash for everything. What do you think of its implication to Bitcoin's use and circulation when there is no power? Assuming that you do NOT prefer to live in a country without governments and borders, what is the “right place” for bitcoin to fit in? Co-exist with fiat? If the value of Bitcoin is priced and based on the value of fiat, what makes Bitcoin immune to inflation? You said in the last interview with me that China's government-issued digital wallet is a threat to Bitcoin IF their digital wallet is accepted outside China, please first explain, and then suggest what can be done about it. Do you think technology has borders? Is crypto a threat to the US government's national security? Regulatory scrutiny is being ratcheted up by an SEC Commission chair who says he believes it's better to be proactive on digital currencies than to react following a crisis. Michael Hsu, the acting chief of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, argued Tuesday that cryptocurrencies and decentralized finance may be evolving into threats to the financial system in much the same way certain derivatives brought near collapse in 2008. 3 questions: Does that mean that Bitcoin and other cryptos are more likely to be treated by the government as a security rather than currency? In the last interview, you said that Bitcoin is more like a currency, have you changed your mind? Do you reserve tax payment for all your Bitcoin capital gain, since 2014, if and when you sell some portion of it, or just use some of it for purchasing goods and services? Taxes and regulations ... do you think being taxed and regulated will make Bitcoin lose some of its “incorruptibility”, “transferability”, and “uninflatability”? What do you foresee as the worst possible scenario to Bitcoin, other than a solar flare that wipes out all digital records and civilization based on electric power on Earth? What do you foresee as the best possible outcome of Bitcoin? How many decades or years will it take us to get there? What do you think about the corporate monopolies such as Google, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon...becoming more powerful than the government in certain aspects? I ask everyone in my interview this question: What does the “Tim Draper Brand” stand for?

LOF fans, our 101 series helping you understand life lessons is back this week with Financial Literacy! With proper financial literacy, you will be able to invest and save money wisely resulting in you securing the bag and financial independence!  What is Financial literacy? It is the confluence of financial, credit, and debt management knowledge that is necessary to make financially responsible decisions—choices that are integral to our everyday lives. A lack of financial literacy affects people in developed or advanced economies, as well as those who live in emerging or developing countries.  In sum, financial literacy has a material impact on individuals, families, and businesses: balancing a budget, buying a home, running a business, funding their children's education, and ensuring an income for retirement. My guest Michael Hsu is an entrepreneur and CFO. He built a financial consulting firm called DeepSky working with entrepreneurs advising their multi-million businesses through systems and processes. He took his experience in entrepreneurship and condensed it into a methodology named MEASURE x HACK to serve as a guide to building a successful business, life, and relationship. It teaches anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit to build a system and processes, learn financial literacy, and create business hacks tailored to their goals. Its end goal is to hand back financial freedom to people who seek it.Michael educates LOF fans this week on tips, lessons, stories, and more to ensure your financial literacy! So things have been hairy the last couple of weeks, eh? I'm currently back to work part time, but also have about 30 chicken eggs incubating, five hatched, and some duck eggs on the way (because my drake is either a fat hen or just not into the ladies, so we don't get fertile eggs from our ducks. Also, another friend is giving me some Brahma eggs to incubate. That's a really enormous chicken, if you're not into the poultry lingo. If you're not following me on Instagram (instagram.com/twomomsdaydrinking) or Twitter, (@2mddpodcast), you should, because I'm posting videos and pictures of our little farm almost every day, and lots of them are of brand new baby chickens. So if you like to go "awwwwww, squee," you should hit me up on social media. Anyhow, I've taken a week off from editing and this week wanted to instead share with you an episode of Michael Hsu's podcast, on which I did a guest appearance last month. Michael reached out to me after I posted on a podcasting forum asking what everyone's numbers were looking like in early March. Everyone experienced a huge downturn in listeners and downloads, and I disclosed that I was feeling a significant amount of imposter syndrome as a result. Michael invited me to try a session of his intergenerational healing approach to dealing with issues like the ones I have every day (Anxiety Girl - Able to Leap to the Worst Conclusion at a Moment's Notice). I'm also notorious for trouncing all therapists' attempts to make me do things that make me feel like I'm performing, or being hokey, or generally going along willingly with their plans whatsoever. My old therapists would probably barf if they could hear this. Because difficult. I can't help it, it's just how I am. I warned Michael before taking him up on his offer that I'm basically Chandler Bing and tend to deflect all efforts at seriousness or intimacy with inappropriate and slightly offensive humor. Michael is brave. He had me on on anyway. This was a fun opportunity to lean into an interpersonal interaction I'm VERY uncomfortable with, and his story during the final half of the episode is fun to listen to. I've always been keenly aware of how my parents' and grandparents' issues inform my own issues, both growing up and now, during what people insist is my adulthood (regardless of whether or not I choose to act like an adult). This was a great opportunity to have my own thoughts on my family's generational issues reflected back to me, and I wound up with some new ideas. It was super awkward. Because I'm super awkward, not because he is. His content is interesting, and he's a fascinating guy with a cool story of his own. He's said he'd love to guest on my show as well sometime, but with the current climate being what it is we just haven't been able to hash out a schedule to do a remote interview, but he just had a baby with his wife 6 months ago and said he'd love to discuss some of the "emotional crapola" that comes up when we have kids. Especially our first kids. So. For this week check out my episode with Michael, and then listen to other ones. Because it's cool hearing people's stories through the lens of his unique method of intergenerational healing. I'll be back next week with a new episode of my own for you. Thank you for joining me for another episode of the YSiG Podcast! Today on the show, my guest is Michael Hsu. He is an author, coach, and expert who specializes in helping us to heal our anxiety, anger and depression through techniques he as developed to address our core fears. Listen with a notepad in hand! I have listened to this 3 times already myself and am still learning, this process is deep! According to Michael, "The reason why anxiety, anger, and depression keep coming up in our lives and in our society is because we are not uncovering and exploring the underlying root cause which lies in intergenerational healing. Understanding intergenerational healing will forever change how we as a human race understand and ultimately heal anxiety, anger, and depression." He has is own podcast, Heal From the Ground up, which I highly recommend checking out as a modality for your own healing. He also offers a master-class and working with him one on one, such as you will see in this episode where Michael helps me uncover what fears my anxiety about revealing myself, and being vulnerable in releasing my podcast are rooted in. Who's movie am I in that I believe is my own? Like an emotional sponge, I have picked up fears, emotions, behaviors and patterns that are possibly not mine, and so have you. Michael shows us how to make these conscious and heal them. If we are faced with trauma or have parents that faced difficulties in coping in life, we may interoperate that in a negative way within ourselves. Today we talk about what it is like to be a highly sensitive person. If someone is feeling anxious, angry, sad or depressed can you intuitively feel and sense it? You may have a gift of high sensitivity. About 1/5 people are blessed with this gift. If they are not aware of this gift it can be used against them. The feeling of anxiety is a big part of what makes us human.  However the feeling of anxiety can be very overwhelming and even painful that we try to fight it and avoid it at all costs.  This only makes it grow.  What we need to do differently is learn to face our anxiety and understand what it is about. When I come to face to face with my anxiety, I see it is often a major sign that I have forgotten about myself.  It is when I have made others my main priority and have forgotten to place myself as a top priority and also have forgotten who am I at the core.  Since anxiety is often about the fear of loss, what we fear is that we will lose our value and self-worth.  But the truth is you cannot lose your core.  Your core is indestructible and will always be with you.  Your core is the most beautiful part of yourself. Listen to this coaching session around the client's feeling of anxiety and think about what is the source of your anxiety as you learn to face and understand it. www.healfromthegroundup.com

Learning to put myself first has been my most important and challenging life lesson.  I personally feel like it will be a lifelong lesson for me.  I'm not saying that I am relearning the same lesson because the lesson of putting myself first, just as with any lesson acts like a tree with hundreds of roots. I know that putting yourself first is something we label as selfish.  But the truth is the person we abuse the most is ourselves.  The person that we disrespect, neglect, criticize is by far ourselves.  We do this because we feel we are not good enough as we are.  So we replace the lack we perceive within ourselves by trying to attain accolades in the outside world so we can mask the ugliness we are afraid to find from within. But the truth is when we remove all the accolades, achievements, goals, dreams and visions, all that is left is our naked self.  And that is when we see our real beauty.  A beauty that surpasses the beauty we are so desperately trying to attain. You will definitely want to listen to this powerful podcast about me sharing how I've come to heal myself to make this realization.  You hear me explore and connect to the beauty within so you can learn how to connect to the beauty within you.  You will also see me coach myself as I go into the deep hidden corners of my subconscious by exploring my feelings around this topic. www.healfromthegroundup.com

We've all had an upbringing that has grealty shaped who we are and what life expereinces we have.  The problem is that we only feel the pain of our past wounds without having any idea where it comes from.  I personally suffer from anxiety of trying to feel safe and using things like work productivity and accomplishments to feel this temporary and superficial feeilng of safety.  In the next episdoe, I will be the client and you will see what is the underlying cause to my need to feel safe and the anxiety caused by it.   As you listen, what I ask of you is to dig deep and think about the underlyng roots to your negative emotions and feelings.  Our emotions are only the tip of the icerberg and to be free of them we must see roots of the problem within the body of the iceberg underneath the water.   What you will often see as the root of the problem is how we stab ourselves with our past wounds and hurt.  How we recreate the pain of our past.

Michael Hsu, the caller I will be coaching, was working with the dynamic of needing to attain perfection before launching a new project.  The focus was primarily on the outcome and “getting it right.”  This is a classic struggle and although we believe that “getting it right” makes a better product, it often has the detrimental effect.  The authenticity and flow of the project suffers or worse yet, the project never even sees the light of day.  Michaels sense of himself as a man had become attached to the outcomes of his endeavors.  This is a common trap that the majority of men fall into.Typically our attention on outcome rather than process is tied to our sense of worthiness.  We believe that our worthiness is tied to the success or failure of how we perform in executing an idea or project.Michael and I discovered that bringing a sense of carefree playfulness to his work would not only create a better and more creative and flexible outcome, but would also increase the joy that Michael could experience while in process.

For most of my life I have struggled with being too selfless.  Interestingly, the people that have irritated me the most in my life have been selfish.  Although it is very important that we give to others, the most important person we need to give to is ourselves.  Having said that, giving to ourselves becomes much more complicated when we have been emotionally abandoned or neglected by our family. How can we give to ourselves when the most important people that brought us into this world did not give us what we deserved. The caller here, Katherine wants to establish a feeling of community and family outside of her own.  She doesn't feel truly appreciated by them so she wants to establish this feeling elsewhere.  Although she has experienced  a lot of turmoil with her family growing up, she believes the past is in the past now.  This has led to tremendous feelings of invalidation and keeps her from truly moving on because our feelings make up who we are and they must be validated in order to validate ourselves. Listen to this powerful podcast coached by me and Kay so you can also dig deep and see what it takes to truly put yourself first despite one's family wounds.

When we don't trust ourselves we may get stuck in a pattern of unhealthy behavior that mask our lack of trust in ourselves.   The caller Deborah tolerates a lot of verbal abuse from her husband in large part because of the fear that she cannot stand on her own two feet.  This lack of trust in herself stems from her tumultuous childhood.  Her father struggled with infidelity and her single mother struggled immensely to make ends meet from raising a family all on her own.  Ultimately we will see a powerful display of how she allows her inner child to feel trusted by her.  We have a unique opportunity here as Michael Hsu and Kay Yamaguchi have the luxury of going to the caller’s home and coaching Deborah and her mother Cookie together.  There is a lot we can learn from Deborah and her mother Cookie as they participate together in honest and courageous discussions.  The very discussions that we all try to avoid within our families.

For the most part we all think we do love ourselves but when we look really closely our actions may say otherwise.  It doesn’t help that society praises sacrifice, care and devotion to others but very little praise is given to loving and caring for yourself which is often misperceived as selfish.  Our lives have become so fast-paced and busy that our core needs become lost in all of our responsibility towards others. This podcast Michael Hsu and Kay Yamaguchi have the luxury of coaching a group of co-workers to see what it means to truly love and care for themselves.  What I love about group healing is that there is a synergistic effect of people being vulnerable and supporting each other.  For one, you know that we are not alone.  Our fear of being alone, shames us so we can’t heal ourselves because we are afraid of telling others about our struggles.  Secondly, by hearing others speak you learn from one another.  As you listen to this podcast you will learn with this group of co-workers on what it means to love yourself.
