What if the biggest changes in your life aren't sudden at all—but have been building quietly for years? Watch the full conversation on YouTube In this episode, Russell Moore sits down with pastor and author Mark Batterson (National Community Church, Washington, D.C.; The Circle Maker, Gradually, Then Suddenly) to talk about how transformation, calling, and even faith itself often arrive–as Hemingway once put it–gradually, then suddenly. From hard decisions and hidden preparation to the slow work of God that looks instant only in hindsight, they explore why patience may be the most underrated spiritual discipline of all. Batterson and RDM talk about the writings of Eugene Peterson on the “long obedience” of a faith journey, the difference between patience and stagnation, how to know when you're called to something and when you're released from it, and why celebrity culture in the church short-circuits character formation. They get practical on habits (why 30 days feels like the hardest part), preaching long obedience in a city addicted to immediacy, learning grit without “snowplow” spirituality, and aiming at legacy that's measured by who others become because of you. If you're looking for wisdom without hurry, conviction without hype, and hope that can take a punch and keep walking, this is the episode for you. On this episode of the Flex Diet Podcast, I'm joined once again by Dr. Phil Batterson to nerd out on one of my favorite topics: anaerobic metabolism. We dig into what's really happening during high-intensity training, the role of lactate, and why much of the “anaerobic vs. aerobic” discussion you hear is oversimplified (or just plain wrong). We also get into the nuts and bolts of how your bioenergetic systems adapt, why cardio equipment can actually be a powerful training tool, and where metabolic carts fit into the picture. Along the way, Phil drops practical examples you can use to better understand your own performance. “We tend to think of miracles as the exceptions to the rule, and that's one kind of miracle. There are miracles that defy the laws of nature, but the laws of nature are miraculous and mysterious in and of themselves. ‘We should always endeavor to wonder at the permanent thing, not the mere exception, said G. K. Chesterton. ‘We should be startled by the sun, and not by the eclipse.'” So writes Mark Batterson in his new book, A Million Little Miracles: Rediscover the God Who Is Bigger Than Big, Closer Than Close, and Gooder Than Good, published by Multnomah. If you know me personally or watch our YouTube videos, you know that I love caffeine and coffee in particular. If you're not supplementing with caffeine before and during your big races, you're missing out on faster finishing times. Chafed & Cranky is a quirky brand that I love. But despite the fun branding, it's a high quality product with a variety of organic, fair trade, and single origin roasts to choose from. The tables get turned on this episode and Jason is interviewed by last week's guest, Phil Batterson! This episode was initially recorded for the Critical Oxygen Podcast. Our conversation takes a broader look at the "why" behind our training philosophies. Here are some of the topics our conversation covers: Jason Fitzgerald's background in running and coaching The importance of maximizing consistency Why optimization is going to be different for each athlete Distinguishing between utilization and capacity training Why Jason considers himself “a developmental coach” How running teaches values that are universally applicable The evolution of Jason's strength training philosophy Training philosophy is a passion for us both, and our discussion will help give you a behind the scenes look at how I approach coaching for runners of all levels. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. My favorite flavor is watermelon salt, but citrus salt is also a banger. I'm drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It's tasty and delicious and I find that I'm not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn't eating enough sodium. There's now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you're worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. Today on the podcast I have Phil Batterson, a competitive runner, former running coach, and the founder of Critical Oxygen. Phil has a PhD in human bioenergetics and a love for all sorts of endurance sports, from rowing to track and field and ultras. His goal with Critical Oxygen is to teach athletes and coaches how to optimize their physiology to maximize endurance performance. Phil breaks down some of the complex physiology behind the three different thresholds to make it more accessible, as well as providing practical ways to apply it in training. Some of our discussion includes: Phil's journey into endurance training and exercise science What physiology defines each of the three thresholds How runners can determine their own thresholds The importance of lactate threshold work for race preparation Common mistakes when using training zones How to integrate VO2 max work with cross training Whether you like to geek out on physiology or just want to race faster, you'll learn a lot from my conversation with Phil! Links & Resources from the Show: Follow Phil on Instagram Check out the Critical Oxygen podcast and blog Let me help you get the most out of your training Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was just at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. WARBIRD RADIO - CAPT Robert "Bob" Batterson not only survived the December 7th surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, he continued to serve his country as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. This is his incredible story and one we were blessed to record. Take a listen! Here's the backstory:Captain Robert E. "Bob" Batterson was a man of honor, courage, and unwavering dedication. Born in the rolling hills of West Virginia, his journey through life would take him from the coal mines of his hometown to the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, and later, into the service of the Church. In the late summer of 1939, as war clouds gathered over Europe, a young and determined Bob enlisted in the United States Navy. His commitment to serving his country was unwavering, and he would go on to prove his mettle time and time again.Bob's thirst for knowledge and his drive to excel were evident from the very beginning. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University and further honed his skills with a Master's Degree from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. These achievements were just the start of a remarkable career that spanned decades. His first assignment took him to Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, where he underwent recruit training. But fate had grander plans for him. Soon, he found himself stationed aboard the USS Philadelphia, CL-41, as part of the Pacific Fleet. It was here, in the vast blue waters of the Pacific, that Bob would come to understand the profound significance of his service.Eight months before the infamous December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor, Bob was transferred to Naval Station Pearl Harbor. He would witness the horrors of that day and the United States' entry into World War II. But rather than deter him, the attack steeled his resolve to do all he could to protect his country. When the opportunity arose for enlisted personnel to apply for flight training, Bob seized it. His determination soared as high as the aircraft he would come to master. In September 1944, he earned his wings as a Naval Aviator, becoming a guardian of the skies. After completing fighter training in the formidable F6F Hellcat at Daytona Beach, Bob was assigned to Fighter Squadron ONE aboard the USS Bennington, CV-20. He served with distinction until the end of the war, earning respect and accolades from his fellow servicemen.Bob's commitment to service didn't end with the war's conclusion. He transitioned to the Supply Corps and continued to serve his country in various capacities until his well-deserved retirement in 1974. His military career was marked by unwavering dedication, integrity, and a deep love for his nation. In retirement, Bob found another calling, one of spiritual significance. He dedicated a decade of his life to serving the Diocese of Corpus Christi as the Fiscal Officer under Bishops Drury and Gracida. His tireless work earned him the Papal Medal Pro-Ecclesia Et Pontifice in 1984, a testament to his devoted service to the Church. But Bob's heart was not just in the church; it was also on the sea. For over three decades, he volunteered on the USS Lexington Museum, where he was one of the original volunteers. His passion for naval history and his love for the museum's mission were evident in his commitment to preserving the legacy of those who served. On Friday, August 11th, 2023, Captain Robert E. "Bob" Batterson passed away, leaving behind a legacy of service, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he served, both in the Navy and in the Church. Bob's journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the skies of World War II and the halls of the Church is a testament to the extraordinary impact one person can have when they dedicate their life to the service of others. He will forever be remembered as a true American hero and a man of deep faith.#fighterpilot #navalaviation #pearlharborattack #hellcat #f7f #worldwartwo#warbirdradio #mattjolley

Your Prayers Will Be Answered!James 5:16: "The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”The Big Life Devotional Podcast has an excellent episode yesterday titled “Praying in Circles.” What I loved most about this episode is that it gave us an action we can do to pray for our children, or really anything we are praying for. The idea of praying in circles comes from a book called The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. This is an amazing book that talks about praying circles around our problems. Mark starts his book off by telling us the legend of Honi the Circle Maker—a man bold enough to draw a circle in the sand and not budge from inside it until God answered his prayers for his people. Honi was a man of God. I am not sure if He was a prophet, or just a prayer warrior, or what. It had not rained in a very long time and the people in the village came to Honi and begged him to pray to God for rain. Honi agreed and he drew a circle in the dirt and prayed to God for rain. He told God he would not step foot out of that circle until it rained. He prayed and he prayed. Eventually, it started to sprinkle. When he saw this he could have stopped praying. He could have said thank you, Lord, I truly appreciate this little rain that you sent us. However, He didn't. He said thank you Lord and also, this is not the rain I am praying for, I am praying for more rain. He continued to pray and praise the Lord. Finally, it was raining down so hard it was starting to flood the area, and all those that were standing around watching him pray were running for shelter. What the Lord just put on my heart as I was typing is that we stop praying too early sometimes. At the first sign of our prayers being answered we stop praying and accept that small offering as the answer when God actually has so much more to give us. It is not that we don't want more it is that we think we will be bothering God, or we will be greedy if we expect more. God wants you to know that is not true. He has so much more for you and He is just waiting for you to be open to receiving it. God wants us to expect big things, amazing things. For instance, when we have partial healing, yes, absolutely thank God for that, and also let Him know you are expecting full healing. Keep asking for what you want. Don't shy away because you are afraid you are asking for too much. I heard a phrase once and I love it. It reminds us why we ask for a lot. The phrase is “I'm not greedy, I'm just needy.” We aren't asking God for more because we are being greedy, we are asking God because we know that we can't do anything on our own and yet through Him, we can do all things. The verse above says, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” Do you know what earnest means? The definition of earnest is “resulting from or showing sincere and intense conviction." What are you praying for right now? What is that prayer that you keep asking God about? That one prayer that you wonder if it will ever be answered? Are you praying earnestly for it? The Bible verses we read are talking to us directly. Each one of us and they are promised by God. Today's verse tells us that the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. You can take this to the bank. This is a factual statement that you can rely on. If this is true, why haven't some of our prayers been answered? There are a couple of reasons for this. First and foremost is explained in Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” God is sovereign. He has a plan and it is better than our plan, even though we tend to think our plan and our timing is better. God knows what He is doing and so sometimes our prayers take longer than we would like or are answered differently than we would like because God has a better plan than we do.However, I think sometimes our prayers take longer to be answered because of things we do or don't do. Are we praying earnestly? Are we asking every single day? Are we asking for enough or are we settling for scraps? God doesn't want to give you crumbs from the table. He wants to give you the whole cake. Why aren't we asking for the cake? We will not be bothering God by asking Him for big, bold prayers. We will be honoring Him. Have you ever been asked to do something at work or in your personal life and the thing you were being asked to do was really difficult? How did you feel when someone asked you to do it? Did you feel honored that they thought you were capable of doing it? Yes, you might have been nervous, as it was a difficult thing or even just a new thing, and yet you felt honored that someone thought you could handle it or you could be good at it.I remember each time the ladies in my prayer group asked to do a new thing. For instance when they asked me to be on the discernment team, or they asked me to be on the prayer team. I was so honored. It felt amazing to know they thought I was capable of doing those things. In a similar way, we honor God when we ask really big, bold prayers. We show Him we know how amazing He is. We show Him that we know He can do the impossible and that nothing is too big for Him. We are not asking God for too much, we are asking too little of Him. It talks about persistence in the circle maker too. Mark Batterson talks about how we give up too soon sometimes when we are praying. We assume it is not God's will if He takes too long to answer and yet maybe God is just waiting to see how badly we want it. What we are willing to do for it. For instance what if Honi, drew that circle in the sand and stood there for 5 hours and then gave up and yet God was going to make it rain after the 6th hour? We don't know God's timing, we just need to keep asking. Is there anything you want so badly you would be willing to draw a circle in the sand around that prayer? It doesn't have to be standing in a circle in the sand until you get it, but maybe you could pray for 5 minutes every single day about that one thing until you get an answer. Maybe you could sit in a church every day for a few minutes until it is answered. Maybe you could commit to going to daily mass until it is answered. It doesn't matter what you commit to as much as it matters that you are willing to commit to something. I think you will see more answers to prayers if you do this because you will be more focused on your prayers. You will be searching for that answer because you are expecting it to come. It is as if you know it will be answered and so you are waiting expectantly. I wonder if that is the problem. I wonder if we are praying expectantly or not. Do you honestly expect God to answer your prayers? Are you on the lookout for the answers? Maybe that is why Honi's prayer we answered so quickly. Actually, I have no idea how long he was standing in that circle, but I know it wasn't months. He knew God would answer His prayer and He was willing to stand there in a circle, looking foolish, until God did. He put his pride aside and was willing to look foolish to wait on God. When we do this, when we step out in faith and put all of our trust in God, He never lets us down. There was no way God was going to not show up for Honi. Honi was honoring God by showing everyone in that town that God is the one to turn to when we need something. When you step out in faith, trusting God, He will always show up. He will not leave you hanging. Pray big, bold prayers, and watch how the Lord shows up for you. Pray earnestly and watch the amazing results. I just looked up in The Circle Maker Book, to see how long Honi prayed for and it said as his prayers went up the rain came down. So I guess his prayer was anwered pretty quickly. Batterson said Honi's prayer was resolute yet humble, confident yet meek, expectant yet unassuming. I think we can all learn a lot from that statement. How can we follow Honi's example of how to pray?Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we want to pray earnestly, show us how. We want to step out in faith and demonstrate your awesomeness to all those around us, give us the holy boldness we need. Give us the persistence and the fortitude we need to continue to pray those prayers that don't seem to be answered. Don't let us give up Lord, help us keep asking. Show us, put on our hearts what it is you want us to do. If you want us to commit to doing something while we wait, put that on our hearts, let us know, and then give us the strength to do it. We love you, Lord, you are truly amazing. We thank you for always showing up. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. “Words create worlds,” writes Mark Batterson in Please, Sorry, Thanks. If so, what kinds of worlds are we creating? Do our words give life or deal death (Proverbs 18:21)? Batterson is pastor of National Community Church in Washington DC. More than any other city in America, our capital is a place where people eat the fruit of their words, turning the nation's stomach sour. And what happens in DC doesn't stay in DC. It radiates out to every nook and cranny of America. Our public discourse is poisoned. Please, Sorry, Thanks offers a different way — a loving way — of speaking. It is a short, simple book with a timely message. If sin is “culpable disturbance of shalom,” as Cornelius Plantinga puts it, then, as Batterson writes, “please, sorry, and thanks are the way shalom is restored.” ----- This episode of the Influence Podcast is brought to you by My Healthy Church, distributors of Bible Engagement Project. Mark Batterson is back, and I'm slightly giddy. You know how much I love his books, and when I tell you this conversation brought me new life . . . well, it's true. I have a notecard on my desk at this very moment with some of my favorite quotes from today's conversation titled “Batterson bullet points.” Pastor Mark reminds us that if God can do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20), we're actually honoring him by praying bold prayers and trusting in faith for his answer. You're going to love hearing how God has been answering the bold prayers of his church, which most recently has included buying property on Capitol Hill he only dreamed of years ago. Lastly, Pastor Mark shares the three words he believes are the greatest predictors of our success in life: please, sorry, and thanks. He's so sure of the significance of these words that he wrote an entire book on their importance. Lots of practical life and parenting advice you won't want to miss today. Mark Batterson claims that it is very important to pray very specific prayers. Jesus, on the other hand, gave us a very different model of how to pray. This is why it is so important to always be holding the messages of “Christian” books up to scripture - and not just to a single verse here or there. Batterson focuses on Jericho, where God delivered on the promise He made to the Hebrews he released from captivity in Egypt. Just looking at the fulfillment of the promise, however, wipes out more than 120 years of significant challenges the Hebrews faced before seeing the fulfillment of that promise. God already had Jericho in mind long before Moses was even born. Yet it would be a full 80 years before God would send Moses back into Egypt to lead the Hebrews out of captivity and they would wander in the desert for another 40 years before God would lead their children and grandchildren into the Promised Land. None of the Hebrews who prayed for delivery from slavery ever actually saw the Promised Land. Books like The Circle Maker often give the impression that God moves quickly and we only have to wait a few months or years to see answers to prayers. Mark Batterson walked a circle around his city and supposedly saw an answer to his prayer within a few decades. But was that really God? America was founded on colonization, where a group of white men laid claim to a land that was already inhabited by others. Mark Batterson walked a circle around a city where there were undoubtedly already churches operating and other people engaged in Kingdom work. So did God really “deliver” that area to him or did he essentially just steal it from others already working there? While we may love the inspiring messages of books like The Circle Maker, it's important to hold them up to the entirety of the Bible to determine their veracity. Christian leaders often make a lot of money by selling us truths we want to hear that may not turn out to be so true in the long run. Today. we'll talk about prayer and whether Mark Batterson is really leading us to pray the way Jesus did and why that is important. In The Circle Maker, Mark Batterson reaches deep into an ancient Jewish Book of Legends to extract the story of Honi, an eccentric sage who lived outside the walls of Jerusalem just prior to the birth of Jesus. Batterson introduces Honi after his homeland has experienced a year-long drought. He weaves a rich tapestry of hyperbole in which Honi boldy draws a circle, steps inside and begins to pray. First, his prayers result in a tiny sprinkle of rain, then a torrent and finally a gentle shower. If this were an American Epic, Honi would return home a hero - and so he does in Batterson's tale. Although Batterson casually mentions that Honi's return does not quite result in Disney-esque perfection, he seems disinclined to expand on that part of the story the same way he did with Honi's great miracle. And therein lies the rub. The Circle Maker is one more of what I like to call “Christian rah-rah” books, which are to me quite similar to fad diet books. Yes, they may produce some relatively spectacular results at first, but those results usually come at a far higher cost than we realize. Not only are they unsustainable, but if you do sustain them, they can cause incredible damage in the long run. Like so many “prosperity gospel” books, The Circle Maker chooses to focus on the miracle - or how to achieve success - without ever exploring the costs of success. Which are often quite high. In today's podcast I talk about how God is not fooled. There are many things man does that he likes to claim are for the glory of God that really aren't. The problem is, you can achieve success regardless of your motivation but achieving success for yourself will always come at a much higher cost than what we genuinely do for God. God is not deceived and God is not mocked. God always knows exactly why we are really doing what we are doing and who it is really for. Follow Kevin James Thornton here! Hospitality Leaders - Interviews with hotel, event, and food service experts
On this episode of the Hospitality Leaders podcast, I'm joined by Brett Batterson, President and CEO of the Orpheum Theatre Group. Throughout the show, we hear some of the ways he's responded creatively to the adversity facing the hospitality industry these last few years. As performing arts venues, the theaters Brett manages faced some of the toughest challenges of the pandemic. Whereas many businesses were able to make minor adjustments to their practices in order to continue operating as normal, entertainment venues were largely shuttered altogether. Brett was unfazed by this adversity and developed creative solutions to his industry's worst problems. He transformed one of his theaters into a miniature golf course for several months, and hosted outdoor candlelit concerts in the parking lot. Few leaders might be willing to so drastically alter their business model, but, to Brett, creativity and adaptability are the keys to survival in a volatile industry. This creativity also extends to his hiring practices. Brett often looks beyond on-paper qualifications and pursues candidates with certain intangible qualities, like determination and adaptability. He's willing to train people into their ideal role, rather than only looking for the perfectly qualified candidate. This outstanding adaptability has brought the Orpheum Theatre Group consistent success in an inconsistent industry. I read Mark Batterson's book, In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, during a season where I needed to hear the call to pursue the dreams God put on my heart. Batterson's book outlines 7 skills of a lion chaser, like Benaiah. Benaiah is King David's bodyguard captain and is mentioned in the register of David's Mighty Men.
Pastor and author Mark Batterson drops by to deliver some biblical truth about how people can "win the day," have less stress and accomplish God's will for their lives. Listen to Batterson break down how God makes His power perfect in weakness — and explore how the Lord will do this in your life. Inspired?
