The Little Animal got a big promotion. James Laurinaitis is now Ohio State's linebackers coach after serving as a grad assistant in 2023. Now, to be clear, Laurinaitis basically ran the LB room last season, but now he's a full-fledged position coach. How will this impact the Buckeyes on the field? What about on the recruiting front? What we also find interesting is that Ohio State's defense is shaping up to be elite in 2024. You could of course argue Jim Knowles' unit was elite in 2023 as the Buckeyes finished No. 3 in the country in total defense and No. 2 in scoring defense. Outstanding numbers? Definitely. Skewed just a bit because of an historically bad offensive season for many Big Ten teams? Sure. (The four-best defenses in the country last year were Big Ten teams, including Penn State, Michigan and Iowa.) But it was still an outstanding defense. However, we have little doubt the 2024 defense will be even better. The one area of possible concern is at linebacker, but the Buckeyes do have talent there ... and now a former All-American and long-time NFL standout as their LB coach. Also, what do we think about OSU defensive line coach Larry Johnson inking a 2-year extension? Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss all things Silver Bullets on the Friday 5ish, who we want as Chris Holtmann's replacement and more. The Ohio State Buckeyes are on quite a roll this month, as yet another standout player has decided to come back to OSU for the 2024 season. This time it's defensive end JT Tuimoloau.Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to break down what it will mean for Jim Knowles' defense this fall on this special live edition of Buckeyes TomOrrow Morning.
Ohio State's defense was one of the very best in the nation in 2023, and at the rate that Buckeye stars are announcing that they'll return for another season, Jim Knowles' defense could be even better in 2024. Friday, a pair of Buckeyes announced that they would be back for the 2024 season, including Jack Sawyer, who just recorded three sacks in the Cotton Bowl, and Lathan Ransom, who was a huge standout in the back end of the defense until suffering a season-ending injury at Wisconsin.Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to break down what the returns of Sawyer and Ransom will mean for this year's Ohio State football team. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
The Ohio State defense played a much better game against Michigan in 2023 than it did in 2022, but when the Wolverines scored on every one of their second-half possessions, the Buckeyes limped home with another loss.So what went right and what went wrong for Jim Knowles' unit in Ann Arbor, and what changes need to be made to get a better result in 2024?Ross Fulton, the Xs and Os guru at BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to break down the good, the bad, and the ugly for the OSU defense on this episode of Buckeyes TomOrrow Morning, presented by Jeff Ruby Steakhouse. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
Ohio State's 2023 regular season is over. The college football schedule always seems long until the games begin and then before you know it, it's gone. So it is again this year as the Buckeyes concluded their 2023 regular season at 11-1 after a bitter, 30-24 loss in Ann Arbor. The team was in it from start to finish, but couldn't quite overcome an early interception that set up Michigan's first touchdown after the Wolverines had done nothing up to that point on offense. Oh, the Buckeyes pulled level at one point, but they simply made too many errors and some questionable (and conservative) decisions, and that's no way to handle The Game. We break down a tough day on the road in Ann Arbor, Kyle McCord's poor start, Ryan Day's key decisions, and more. We also wonder what happened to Jim Knowles' defense after halftime. And we look back at our predictions and our picks to click to see how well we anticipated the happenings in the mitten state. We addressed fan concerns about Day and McCord and tried to look at it objectively in the cold light of day. Are there coaches who should be fired? Absolutely, and we tell you which ones. Wrapping up this week's podcast, we looked at the other results around the Big Ten, as we usually do, but we also looked back at our preseason predictions to see how our soothsaying skills turned out. As usual, we seem to know much more about the Big Ten East than the West, but the same could be said for most people. Alas, we won't have the divisions anymore, so the wild west will simply have to be wild without ramifications for the Big Ten title game. We'll be here with you every week from now until the end of the 2023 Ohio State football season (and then monthly). We'd love to hear from you, so please reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email. For two seasons in a row, the Michigan Wolverines have put up more than 40 points against the Ohio State defense. In 2021, the Wolverines ran directly over the Buckeyes, and in 2022, it took just five big plays to hand Michigan their second straight win in the series. This year, Jim Knowles' defense has held opponents to just 3.3 yards per carry, and only one play of 40 yards or longer all season. So will Michigan be able to move the ball enough against Ohio State to win The Game for the third straight year? Ross Fulton, the Xs and Os guru at BuckeyeHuddle.com, joins host Tom Orr to break down the matchup of Sherrone Moore's offense against Jim Knowles' defense. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement
When you look at how the Michigan Football QB has played the last 5 weeks, JJ McCarthy has fallen back to reality and doesn't look like the Heisman Trophy Contender he once was. Will Michigan be able to throw the football on arguably the best secondary in college football, the Ohio State Buckeyes? What will Sherrone Moore's gameplan be for Ryan Day and Jim Knowles' defense? We know the Wolverines run the football well, but will they be able to beat Ohio St in a one dimensional fashion? On this Wednesday episode of Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis discuss what Ryan Day and Jim Knowles had to say as Ohio State prepares to face Maryland. The conversation includes a look at where quarterback Kyle McCord can take his next step as OSU's starter and Day's frustration with the inability to convert in short-yardage situations. For the last few years, Ohio State's defense has been the biggest obstacle standing between the Buckeyes and a national championship. But does that mean he's guaranteed to keep it in 2024 if he comes back? Are the new play clock rules costing the Buckeyes' “styles points” on their College Football Playoff resume? Our thoughts on Devin Brown's explosiveness as a runner, or lack thereof; Jim Knowles' new “feast or famine” philosophy; Where to rank the winner of the Ohio State-Notre Dame game; Plus plenty more including bagel preferences, journalism journeys and thoughts on the OSU fan base. Well, we did see some improvement from Ohio State's first game to Saturday's win over Youngstown State, but it's fair to say that it wasn't quite the leap many fans were hoping for in another underwhelming win against what should have been a badly overmatched opponent. The 35-7 final score would have been more palatable against Indiana on the road in the opener than an FCS school at home in the second game of the season. We're breaking down Saturday's game, talking about the key plays and players, and checking in to see how close (or not) we were on our score predictions and our picks to click. Following our game discussion, we talked about Mel Tucker's suspension in East Lansing. The former Ohio State assistant is vehemently denying the allegations but he won't coach the Spartans again until the investigation is complete and maybe not even then. We looked through the Big Ten's other results, searching for surprises and didn't find any. The heavy favorites won big, while Illinois made a valiant comeback attempt at Kansas and Wisconsin was undone by a turnover that didn't appear to me to be one. Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday's matchup with Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers have a potent passing attack that will provide a good test for Jim Knowles' defense this weekend, while the OSU offense has to find answers for third-and-short situations and the line play must get better on both sides of the ball. We'll be back next week to take our deep dive into the Western Kentucky game and we'll be looking ahead to a massive non-conference matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In fact, we'll be here with you every week from now until the end of the 2023 Ohio State football season. Come for the hot takes, stay for the warm ones. On this episode of Hangout in the Holy Land, Josh and Chuck celebrate the holiday known as Week 1 of the college football season. Forget all that Week 0 nonsense, because now it's for real! Because Ohio State kicks off, of course. A new CFB season means new faces, new questions, and new reasons for optimism... Or pessimism and concern. But the hosts are not too worried about OSU's new starting quarterback. Instead, they want to know if Jim Knowles' defense will turn up the heat and whether Justin Frye's revamped offensive line can protect C.J. Stroud's replacement. Although there are plenty of unknowns in and around Columbus, hopes and expectations are as high as they've ever been. Up first for the Buckeyes are the Indiana Hoosiers, so Josh and Chuck preview a Tom Allen-led IU squad that has struggled in recent seasons. Can the boys in Bloomington recapture their pandemic magic? Or will Allen's seat continue to heat up? The Hangouts boys lean toward the latter... The Ohio State defense had an up-and-down year in Jim Knowles' first season in charge. Now, as the Buckeyes enter year two of the Knowles era, things are seemingly on track for an improvement. Yes, the continuity of the system will help, but there are also some new faces who could make a big impact this fall as well. Day one of Ohio State's preseason camp is in the books and there are already plenty of interesting developments. Is sophomore sensation Sonny Styles going to be the Buckeyes' starting slot safety? At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds? Might the "slot safety" be more of a rover back for OSU this season in Jim Knowles' scheme? At right tackle, it appears to be a three-man race between Zen Michalski, Tegra Tshabola and Josh Simmons. On Thursday, that was the order in which they took their reps -- Michalski with the first-team, Tshabola with the second-team and Simmons with the third-team. But it was just the first day and that order is of course subject to change. However, that being said, might we have been too quick to assume Simmons will win the job? On the Friday 5ish, Jonah Booker and Dave Biddle discuss all of that and much more from OSU's first practice of the season. Jim Knowles' first season as Ohio State's defensive coordinator represented a significant improvement over the previous iteration of the Buckeyes' defense... at least until the last two games of the season. And while many fans have pointed to big plays as the key issue in 2022, Devin Radcliffe of BuckeyeHuddle.com says there's more to it. He thinks OSU's defense was not complex enough to offer tools to defend the better offenses on the schedule. So will that be improved in 2023? And how do you find the happy middle ground between a system that's too simple and one that's too complex for players to be able to run quickly?Devin joins host Tom Orr to discuss that and much more. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5626222/advertisement

It is a difficult topic because everyone loves Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson. Especially the current D-linemen and recruits who all single him out as a main reason they picked the Buckeyes or are strongly considering them. But does Johnson's style mesh with OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles' scheme? Does Johnson use too deep of a rotation and not give his best players enough snaps? What is going on with the Jack/LEO position and who is best suited there for OSU? Dave Biddle flies solo on today's show to do a deep dive on the Buckeyes' D-line and touch on other Ohio State football topics. That is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish. Jim Knowles' first season as Ohio State's defensive coordinator saw some significant progress from the Buckeyes, but some glaring issues as well. None of those issues were more obvious than the Buckeye defense giving up big plays in crucial moments against both Michigan and Georgia. So what was behind those issues, and does Knowles need to think about maybe playing it a little safer in 2023?In this episode of the Buckeyes TomOrrow Morning podcast, you'll hear directly from Knowles about that and much more. What can the addition of James Laurinaitis bring to the coaching staff and the program?Where can returning linebackers Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers still improve? How much will they be experimenting this spring? What's the plan for sophomore sensation Sonny Styles? And much more.
On this Wednesday Buckeye Talk, Doug Lesmerises, Nathan Baird and Stephen Means are talking about Ohio State linebackers after speaking with Buckeyes' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jim Knowles and new OSU grad assistant James Laurinaitis last week. Covered in the three sections on this episode: * (0:30) How Knowles felt about his first year running the defense and what the focus will be in spring football * (25:20) The chances that young linebackers C.J. Hicks, Gabe Powers and Reid Carrico should get in the spring * (38:36) The role Laurinaitis should play in recruiting and ... might play in Michigan prep? Thanks for listening to Buckeye Talk. Is Ryan Day really going to hand over playcalling duties this fall? When are the Buckeyes expecting to have a starting quarterback identified? What's the plan for the 2023 Ohio State offensive line?Does the aggressiveness of Jim Knowles' defense need to get dialed back?Kevin Noon and Tom Orr of BuckeyeHuddle.com got to talk to Ohio State football coaches for several hours on Wednesday, and discuss the answers to those questions and more on this episode of Buckeyes TomOrrow Morning.
The Ohio State football program just added a major piece to its 2023 defense. Davison Igbinosun, who was named a freshman all-American at Ole Miss in 2022, announced that he will be a Buckeye in 2023. Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr break down what the news means for Ohio State in this instant reaction episode of the Buckeye Weekly podcast. Igbinosun played in all 13 games for the Rebels in 2022, starting in 10. So where will he fit in the cornerback rotation for Jim Knowles' defense in 2023?
The NFL Draft declaration deadline and Transfer Portal window passed this week with no word on the status of Ohio State safety Josh Proctor.Proctor took part in Senior Day for the Buckeyes in 2022, leading most to assume his Ohio State career was over at the end of the season. But late Friday night, news broke that Proctor would be back in Columbus for the 2023 season. Kevin Noon of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss how important that news could be for Jim Knowles' defense. Plus, Chris Holtmann and the OSU men's basketball team pick up a crucial win to snap a 5-game losing streak, but did they lose veteran forward Zed Key to another injury at the end of the game? The guys discuss all that and more on this episode of Buckeyes TomOrrow Morning.
On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I'm joined by Jordan Williams to host our end of season award show highlighting some of the best moments from the 2022 season. We start the show with a discussion about Tommy Eichenberg's big decision to return to Ohio State and how that is beneficial for the Buckeye defense heading into year 2 of Jim Knowles' defense. We also discuss why having a talented player returning far outweighs potential that has not been seen in game action yet. Then we get into a discussion about Kevin Warren's decision to leave his role as Big Ten commissioner to be the president of the Chicago Bears. Our discussion dives into the impact Warren had on the Big Ten conference and why his tenure was a resounding success. After the news and notes we get into our end of season award show discussing the best and worse from 2022. In the first half we get into the worst from the 2022 Ohio State season, this includes the most painful moment and the player we will not miss who left for whatever reason. Then we discuss our worst takes as well as some of our favorites we saw this season. Once we get through our Razzies, we get into our Oscars. We discuss the team MVP, the team MVP not named a C.J. Stroud, and our favorite moments of the year among a few others. During it all our normal tangents come into play, so if you just expect structure, you'll be disappointed. Then, to close out the show, we give our best takes from the season. And we wanted to say thank you to all who have listened this season, interacted with us, and made covering Ohio State another year so fun. At the exact halfway point between Ohio State's regular-season finale against Michigan and the Buckeyes' College Football Playoff game against Georgia, we thought today would be the perfect time to have Kyle Jones on Real Pod Wednesdays to break down what happened against the Wolverines and what could happen against the Bulldogs.Eleven Warriors' scheme expert joins us right from the jump of this week's episode to dive into more than 30 minutes of X's and O's chatter, and we don't beat around the bush, starting right off the bat with a conversation about what didn't work in the loss to Michigan and why Ohio State used the game plan it did against the Wolverines. We also discuss whether Ryan Day should (and why he probably won't) give up offensive play calling and evaluate the overall progress of Ohio State's defense in Jim Knowles' first year before looking ahead to the impending matchup with Georgia and assessing the Buckeyes' chances of beating the Bulldogs. In the second half of the show, Dan and Griffin discuss all of the other headlines surrounding Ohio State football this week including the hiring of Keenan Bailey as tight ends coach, why Gene Smith felt compelled to make a statement calling for “additional support” of NIL collectives and what questions remain for Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class with one week to go until the early signing period. The rundown of topics discussed on this week's show: 0:55: Most of Ohio State's game plan against Michigan was actually sound despite the results 6:58: Ohio State's offense played not to lose, which it can't do in big games 10:00: It doesn't look like Ryan Day will give up play calling, but there's a case that he should 15:27: Jim Knowles' defensive turnaround was always going to be a multi-year process 17:45: Ohio State ran a different defensive scheme against Michigan rather than being who it's been all year 19:12: Georgia is a great team, but its film isn't as impressive as many of Ohio State's previous CFP opponents 22:24: Ohio State's receivers should have opportunities to make plays against Georgia, but they have to take advantage 25:25: Georgia's offense isn't necessarily spectacular in any area, but it's extremely well-coached 28:33: Ohio State must make Georgia throw deep and must know where Jalen Carter is at all times 31:59: The Buckeyes are capable of beating Georgia, but they can't play the way they did down the stretch 33:50: Keenan Bailey's promotion is well-deserved 35:47: Ohio State won't name a new offensive coordinator until after the season, but an internal promotion appears likely 38:15: Most of Tuesday's Ryan Day press conference wasn't about Georgia, which speaks to how crazy December is 42:58: Ryan Day says NIL has become “the conversation” among recruits, and it's telling that Gene Smith felt the need to make a statement 47:20: Fans deserve more answers about where the NIL collective money is going, and they don't deserve guilt trips if they don't donate 53:47: Ohio State's 2023 recruiting class could use another jolt of star power 57:25: Marvin Harrison Jr. should have won the Biletnikoff Award, but being a unanimous All-American ain't bad 58:56: C.J. Stroud, Justin Fields and Dwayne Haskins are three of Ohio State's best quarterbacks ever, but none will have a tree in Buckeye Grove 1:00:03: Ohio State's win over Rutgers was still a good win even if Tanner Holden's three shouldn't have counted 1:02:22: The Buckeyes might actually be favored to beat North Carolina on Saturday
No. 4 Ohio State is set to take on top-ranked Georgia in the 2022 Peach Bowl on New Year's Eve. The game is shaping up to be a big challenge for the Buckeyes, who enter as roughly a touchdown underdog. What will Ryan Day's offense and Jim Knowles' defense try to do to get the better of Kirby Smart's team? Ross Fulton of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss that and much more. - Did Tennessee provide a roadmap for how the Buckeyes can pull off the upset?- Which mistakes does Ohio State need to get cleaned up before the game?- Are the issues from the Michigan game correctable before the Peach Bowl?- And much more.Check out BuckeyeHuddle.com to get all of the best Ohio State Buckeyes coverage. We start the show with a long discussion about our emotions heading into the game and our overall expectations for the matchup. Then our discussion gets into the tale of the tape discussing both teams' resumes and breakdown the game from statistical standpoint for both teams. Then we get into our Michigan report breaking down some of their biggest storylines heading into the game. The conversation gets into the new look offense, the health of the running backs, and how much credit Jesse Minter gets for the success of the defense. The next segment is a talk about the biggest questions for the Buckeyes heading into the game on both sides of the ball. Legacies are on the line and Jim Knowles' contract value will be earned on Saturday. As the show moves forward, our conversation shifts towards what Ohio State needs to do to win on Saturday. Although Ohio State's season opener against Notre Dame didn't go quite the way we expected, we came away with plenty of positive impressions from the Buckeyes' performance.Ohio State's defense exceeded our expectations while we expected more from the Buckeyes' offense against Notre Dame, but overall, we think there was more to like than dislike from Ohio State's season-opening 21-10 win over the Fighting Irish, who entered the season ranked fifth in the country. In nearly a full hour of discussion on the Buckeyes' first victory of the year, we talked about just about everything that resonated with us from Saturday night's season opener in the Shoe, including: 0:48: What stood out most to each us: The dominant debut of Jim Knowles' defense and Xavier Johnson's moment in the spotlight 7:49: Ohio State's defensive stars against Notre Dame: Mike Hall, Tommy Eichenberg and Lathan Ransom 14:02: How Ohio State's defensive rotations could change in future games 21:12: Ohio State's defense will face tougher tests as the season progresses – but maybe not for another month 25:42: Miyan Williams proves he needs to get consistent carries at running back 30:13: Jaxon Smith-Njigba's injury shows just how important he is to Ohio State's offense, and the Buckeyes shouldn't take any chances with him (or Luke Wypler) for the next two weeks 36:15: Ohio State's offense gets a reality check, but it's way too early to say Ryan Day should give up play calling 43:18: Barely any freshmen played against Notre Dame, but that's not a bad thing 46:18: A star-studded weekend at the Shoe was exactly what Ohio State needed to build recruiting momentum In the final 20 minutes of the show, we spend just a few minutes (starting at 49:43) talking about this week's game against Arkansas State before making our predictions on whether the Buckeyes will cover the 44-point spread. We also talk (beginning at 54:35) about how this weekend reaffirmed our belief that there‘s a gap between the top three teams in college football this year (Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State) and everyone else, and share our initial thoughts (59:59) on the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams, which Dan believes will be a net positive for the sport but Griffin is not so sure on.Finally (1:05:42), we talk about this week's developments in Ohio State basketball: the unfortunate but not shocking end of Seth Towns' career with the Buckeyes, the decommitment of George Washington III and the possibility that Taison Chatman and/or Bronny James could replace Washington in Ohio State's recruiting class of 2023.
The season is officially underway! Ohio State may have had the offense stuck in neutral for much of the opening game against the Fighting Irish, but — as usual — there's always “run the dang ball” on which to fall back. The Jaxon Smith-Njigba injury certainly affected Ryan Day's offense, Jim Knowles' defense (after the first play) worked about as well as most OSU fans hoped, and the Buckeyes were able to be physical in the run game when it mattered most. We break down the Buckeyes' 21-10 win over the Notre Dame, including what went well, what didn't work as well as expected, and who the top performers were. We checked the final box score to check on how we did with our score predictions and the players we picked to click. After our Notre Dame talk, we walked through the results around the Big Ten, where there were few surprises but some results that probably should have gone the other way and at least one that could be costly at season's end for teams that may struggle to reach bowl eligibility (looking at you, Illini). Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday's opponents, the Arkansas State Red Wolves. There will be some familiar faces on the other side of the field on Saturday, including former Buckeye running back Brian Snead. After we present how we think the game will unfold, we give your our picks to click on both sides of the ball and our score predictions as well. We'll be back next week to analyze the Arkansas State matchup, check on our picks and predictions, and get ready for an in-state battle against the Toledo Rockets. In the meantime, feel free to reach out with your feedback and questions below in the comments section or send us an email. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Ohio State wins their season opening AP Top-5 match up against Notre Dame 21-10 in a hard fought week one victory. Jordan Williams hosts and is joined by Chris Renne to bring you the Land-Grant Holy Land “Instant Recap Pod.” To get the show started, the guys get into their initial reactions of the game after looking at the stats of the game. They talk about Jim Knowles' debut as the defensive coordinator for Ohio State and how the defense had a strong performance against a physical, well-coached offense. After the initial discussion, the guys transition to the offensive performance. The early struggles were highlighted from Ryan Day's play calling and the second half performance showed the physicality the fans had been hearing about all season. Then the guys get into some conversations about what Ryan Day's future as play caller should be for the Buckeyes and how the team should move forward in that regard. In this convo the guys discussed how the run game evolved in the offseason and why the Buckeyes should trust the running backs more. After that, the guys discuss the players of the game including a specialist and a surprise contributor. Then they get into the injuries sustained during the game and what the Buckeyes have in front of them next week. To conclude the show they give their final thoughts on the performance. After eight months of looking ahead to Ohio State's 2022 football season, it's finally game week in Columbus.Come next week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, we'll have an actual football game to recap and a much better feel of how good this year's Ohio State football team actually is and what it still needs to work on. We break down what we expect to see from Jim Knowles' defense and what would constitute a good first game in terms of points and yards allowed and how much of a challenge Notre Dame's defense will present to Ohio State's offense, then make our score predictions (at the 33:30 mark) for how we think the game will ultimately play out.Later in the show (starting at 36:35), we talk about why this will also be a massive recruiting weekend for the Buckeyes – and not just in football – as Ohio State's top targets in both football and basketball will be on campus. Dan discusses why it's vital to Ohio State's 2023 defensive end recruiting for the Buckeyes to impress Keon Keeley, Matayo Uiagalelei and Damon Wilson this weekend, and Griffin discusses why he thinks Ohio State basketball has a genuine chance to land Bronny James.

We also answer how we feel about certain positions groups and the depth heading into the season. To close out the questions we get into some final questions about what should be expected from the Buckeyes. After the break, we make some season long stat predictions for the Buckeyes. We talk about where C.J. Stroud will finish nationally, how many yards the Ohio State receivers will combine for, and many more. We get into some defensive stat predictions as well. With the 2022 college football season looming larger and larger, it's time for us to do our annual predictions shows. As usual, we start with the Big Ten West while we're saving the Big Ten best for next week's show. Chip Minnich and I had to inspect the transfer portal, check the injury reports, and come up with some kind of order in what could be a chaotic Big Ten West this season. Before we get into that, we discuss some of the more timely news of import to Ohio State fans. We start with the removal of the black stripes. It's always fun to track which players are getting their helmet stripes removed and becoming “official” Buckeyes. It doesn't always portend how a player's college career will play out, but it's an interesting curiosity and it at least shows how that player is displaying his wares to the coaching staff. We've also got our responses to Kamryn Babb getting this year's Block 0 jersey. The young man has been plagued with injury issues since his arrival and we're hoping he finally gets to show what he can do at some point this season. The offensive players interviewed this week were raving about the OSU defense. Was that some savvy media training in action? An honest barometer of what we can expect from Jim Knowles' group? Both? Neither? We have our thoughts. And we also had some news this week about Ohio State's first opponent. We now know that Notre Dame will be down a starting wide receiver. We also know who will be under center for the Fighting Irish this season. After the news segment, we run through our predictions for the B1G West, starting at the bottom. Chip and I were in lockstep for the three teams we think will finish in or near the cellar, but then we had some minor disagreements before once again coming together at the top. In all honesty, it was a difficult exercise because the West could go in a lot of different directions this season and that could ride on how healthy teams stay, which quarterbacks improve, and how teams fill the holes left by their departing starters. We hope you enjoy our takes on the “other” Big Ten division and we welcome your thoughts. Hit us up on Twitter (@SilvrBulletsPod) or email us, and let us know where you've got the Purdue Boilermakers, Minnesota Golden Gophers, Wisconsin Badgers, Illinois Fighting Illini, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Northwestern Wildcats finishing this season. On today's episode of “Buck Off with Christopher Renne,” I am joined by Jordan Williams, and we we bit off more than we could chew on this and got into a little bit of everything in this one. To get the show started we get into Jim Knowles' media availability and one of us is drinking all the Kool Aid provided. We then get into his raised expectations for the defense and how the pecking order is being defined for his linebacker unit. Then we discuss the super-freshmen in C.J. Hicks and Sonny Styles, and their initial impressions in the program. After that we discuss some of the more intriguing topics from Ryan Day's media availability. I have trouble with names, but we get into the way Ryan Day talked about some of the players on the roster breaking down the coach speak. We discuss the word choice of Day for three players Enokk Vimahi, Xavier Johnson, and Chip Trayanum. We also discuss some of Ryan Day's concerns and why we aren't buying into any tenacity talk. After the break, we get into the new Big Ten media deal that is all but finalized. This conversation goes on and we discuss the nature of the deal. In this discussion we talk about the SEC and ESPN's mistakes/ Then we try to figure out how each network can build their coverage to maximize their relationship with the Big Ten. To close out the show, we answer all your questions to the best of our ability. This was fun and you guys had some great questions for the Buckeyes heading into week one. Preseason camp is in full swing at Ohio State, and we've had plenty of access to the Buckeyes over the past week as a result. After watching a portion of the first two practices and attending four interview sessions at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center over the past week, we reconvene on this week's Real Pod Wednesdays to discuss the biggest things we learned from the first six days of camp.We start by talking about what we heard during Jim Knowles' interview session on Tuesday, when he made several eyebrow-raising comments. Should Ohio State fans be worried about the Buckeyes' cornerback depth? Knowles said only 25% of his defense has been installed so far; is that a cause for concern? And is Knowles setting expectations too high by saying the Buckeyes should have a top-five defense?Following about 25 minutes of conversation about the defense, we shift our attention to the offense and discuss what we heard during offensive line and running back interviews. We also highlight a few players who seem to be building momentum so far in camp – including Tyler Friday and Julian Fleming – and discuss our favorite “Dayisms” from Ryan Day's first press conferences of the preseason.Later in the show, we discuss the pros and cons of CBS and NBC replacing ESPN as Big Ten TV partners (41:00), our favorite outfits from hotel check-in (58:07) and what the past week of wins both on the recruiting trail and on the court mean for the present and future of Ohio State men's basketball (59:58).
Caden Curry has wasted no time impressing Ohio State coaches as he prepares for his career as a Buckeye. The incoming freshman possesses a skillset that many believe will be perfect for Jim Knowles' defense. During today's show, Jay highlights a few reasons Caden Curry has been a bright spot among all of the freshmen on the team. Jay also discusses a few comments Terry McLaurin recently made about Ohio State during a recent press conference. We close the show continuing our Buckeye road trip around the NFL. Ross Jackson, of Locked on Saints, joins us to discuss what we can expect from Bradley Roby. Roby is in his second year with the New Orleans Saints. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Among the topics discussed this week include the following.- How will Ohio State's offense impact the way Jim Knowles calls a defense?- Do current and former Buckeyes recruit?- If you could turn one loss in Ohio State football history into a win, but you'd have to trade it with an equally valued win by making that a loss, what would the win and loss be?- What are the expectations for cornerback Cam Brown this year?- What is the latest on Kourt Williams?- What's the deal with Buckeye safeties?- Will NIL lead to quicker boos from the fans?- Will NIL impact the NFL draft and keep players in school longer?- Why is OSU's offensive recruiting so far ahead of its defensive recruiting in 2023 and 2024?

Scheme guru Kyle Jones joins the Dubcast to offer his first impressions of Jim Knowles' defense following Ohio State's annual Spring Game.
While we're looking forward to this weekend's spring game at Ohio Stadium, we had to start this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays by looking back.Following this weekend's tragic death of Dwayne Haskins, we took some time at the beginning of this week's show to reflect on the impact Haskins made on Ohio State and remember some of his most memorable performances as a Buckeye, including Ohio State's comeback wins against Michigan in 2017 and Penn State in 2018.After paying tribute to Haskins, we turn our attention (beginning at 15:20) to the upcoming scrimmage in the Shoe, where the general public will have the opportunity to watch this year's Buckeyes in action inside Ohio Stadium for the first time this year on Saturday. We discuss what we'll be watching most closely on Saturday – spoiler alert: the defense – and which players we believe could benefit most from a big spring game performance, including Julian Fleming and Evan Pryor. We also talk about everything we learned (starting at 26:38) from the final week of Ohio State player interviews before the spring game, including some telling comments from C.J. Stroud about what he's seeing from Jim Knowles' defense in practice this spring compared to what he saw from the Buckeyes' defense in practice last year. Could facing more defensive looks in practice have tangible benefits for Ohio State's offense when the actual games begin this fall? We think it will.Later in the show, we also discuss what Ohio State's new assistant coach contracts tell us (39:35) and what you should know about the two newest members of Ohio State's recruiting class of 2023, Malik Hartford and Mark Fletcher. We spend the final 10 minutes of the show talking about some of the latest developments with Ohio State men's basketball, including what we think should be expected from Justice Sueing after he announced his return to the Buckeyes for the 2022-23 season and who else the Buckeyes could still add from the transfer portal. (Note: This episode of Real Pod Wednesdays was recorded before Meechie Johnson Jr. announced his decision to transfer from Ohio State.)
Ohio State landed a commitment from 4-star safety Malik Hartford on Wednesday. It was also a busy day for the current Buckeyes as the quarterbacks and linebackers spoke to reporters about spring ball. In this episode of the Buckeye Weekly Podcast, Tony Gerdeman and Tom Orr discuss the happenings of the day. Topics include the following.- Malik Hartford's commitment.- What makes him special?- What does it mean that Ohio State already has two safeties committed?- Is there a concern regarding cornerback recruiting?- Where has CJ Stroud improved from last year?- What does Stroud think about Jim Knowles' defense?- What keeps Stroud humble?- How Ohio State is building an assembly line of quarterbacks.- Why you should like Devin Brown.- What Steele Chambers thinks about the defense.- All of this and much more.
It was quite the eventful day of Ohio State football news on Tuesday and we unpack it all on today's show. Cade Stover has moved back to tight end. What are our thoughts on that development? Also, is Jack Sawyer the favorite to be the starting JACK in Jim Knowles' defense? Furthermore, how did Mickey Marotti handle things following the loss to Michigan this past season? Did he adjust anything about winter workouts? Matt Baxendell and Dave Biddle discuss that and much more on the Wednesday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Ohio State football team has to replace a pair of fantastic offensive lineman this season, with both Nick Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford off to the NFL.Matt Jones is likely to fill one of those spots after excelling in limited opportunities in 2021, and sophomore Donovan Jackson may be the favorite to win the other. OSU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson met with the media during the first week of spring practice and discussed what made Jackson such a unique and impressive prospect that he was in consideration to play even more as a true freshman.Plus, how much does the return of CJ Stroud change what they'll do on offense this fall, how will facing Jim Knowles' defense during practice get them ready for the season, and much more.

The Ohio State football team is back on the practice field, the NFL Scouting Combine is complete and the postseason is about to begin for Ohio State men's basketball.Tuesday was the first day of spring football at Ohio State, and that's where we begin on this week's episode of Real Pod Wednesdays, on which we share our takeaways from watching the first 30 minutes of the Buckeyes' opening practice and from talking to Ryan Day, Jim Knowles and Kevin Wilson after practice. We explain why there's already a clear group of frontrunners to start on the offensive line, discuss how Kourt Williams and Ronnie Hickman could coexist within Jim Knowles' defense and talk about some of the players who are clearly already making an impression on Ohio State's coaches this offseason, including second-year wide receiver Jayden Ballard and second-year cornerbacks Jordan Hancock and Jakailin Johnson.Dan also learned more about which Ohio State football players could have breakout years and about some of Ohio State's new coaches by talking to players at last week's NFL Scouting Combine, where he also watched former Buckeye wide receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave solidify themselves as first-round draft picks. We talk about what he learned in Indianapolis, including what three former Cincinnati defensive backs had to say about new Ohio State safeties coach Perry Eliano and what former UCLA offensive lineman Sean Rhyan said about new Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye, beginning around the 25:20 mark. While Dan just got back from Indianapolis, Griffin will be going to Indianapolis this week for the Big Ten men's basketball tournament, so we also talk about what we expect to see from the basketball Buckeyes as they begin postseason play. Can they bounce back from losing three of their final four regular-season games to make a deep run in the conference tournament, or will they have a short stay in Indianapolis? Beginning at the 38-minute mark, we talk about why they could make a run and why they might not, why there's an argument that they'd actually be better off not making a deep run and what NCAA Tournament seed we ultimately expect them to receive on Selection Sunday. In the final 11 minutes of the show, we talk about how Ohio State women's hockey has emerged as the best team on campus, how NIL is being used in recruiting and how Chris Holtmann can most effectively replace Ryan Pedon on his coaching staff.
