In this episode, the Smoking Gun Tape has pulled the rug out from under  President Nixon and now he is being urged to resign by even his most loyal defenders.  However, his family unanimously urged him to fight on. It is in this final emotional week that President Nixon goes back and forth about what to do. The President himself seems to have already come to the decision to resign, while at the same time hoping to find a glimmer of hope from somewhere. Three leaders from congress, John Rhodes, the Republican House Minority Leader, Hugh Scott, the Senate Minority Leader and Senator Barry Goldwater , the 1964 Republican Presidential Nominee, all come down to the White House for a fateful meeting to tell him that his support in Congress had totally evaporated. It was then that Richard Nixon moved forward with his decision to resign the Presidency. He would enlist his main speech writer Ray Price to help him put together the words for an address to the nation and his Chief of Staff Alexander Haig would reach out to the Vice President and the Congress people who had fought so hard and valiantly on President Nixon's behalf, men like Representatives Charlie Wiggins of California and Charlie Sandman of New Jersey.  In order to prepare them for the momentous decision now just hours away. Then the President would meet with the Congressional Leadership and have a moment with his old friend from Oklahoma, a man who had come to the House in the same class as Nixon, and who had risen to the position of Democratic Speaker of the House,  but Carl Albert had not been able to tame his out of control caucus and in one of the most telling moments of the entire Watergate Scandal says what sounds like a sad admission of guilt, that he knew what had happened was totally unfair. Speaker Carl Albert says as he was leaving the meeting, with the President's last remaining ally in leadership , Senator James Eastland D- Mississippi , by his side " Dick, I hope you don't blame me for this....." This is that story and will lead you right up to the moments just before Richard Nixon  would address the nation.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022!!!In this episode we look back at 2021, a year of success here at "Bridging the Political Gap" and a year of sad farewells as we said good by to so many inspirational figures in our life from former Senator Bob Dole, to former Secretary of State George Shultz ,  to Former Senator John Warner, to the Mayor I served with through most of my time as a Myrtle Beach City Councilman, John Rhodes, and an Horry County pioneer who served as the first woman from Horry County to sit in the South Carolina Legislature and for whom I worked in her Horry County South Carolina Auditor's office in the late 1990's. Lois Eargle had been a constant presence in my life and an inspiration. We suffered three very personal losses this year as well. My colleague  in Real Estate, Charles Hinson, whom I worked along side with for two decades and sadly had no footage I could share for a broadcast. My Mother Gloria Bulmer also passed away in March. There is literally nothing I ever achieved that was not a direct result of her influence in my life. She was business woman, a teacher, and my biggest fan and most ferocious defender. It is hard even today to imagine her not being here for advice and support. It was also the year that I sadly lost my loyal companion, my Dog Cooper, whose presence in our show continues to this day every time our closing theme ends. We also look forward in this episode to all the exciting shows planned for 2022 on the life and career of Richard Nixon with what is turning out to be the largest available resource of the secret Nixon tapes available outside Nixontapes.org or the National Archives itself. One of the truly most heartfelt and memorable things I was able to do as an elected official and candidate for Congress was speak at this event honoring those who had lost their lives in Military Service in 2012. This speech was very special to me because it involves three people I admired tremendously. I was able to talk about my political hero Bob Dole, My Great Uncle J.B. Crowley (two heroic World War 2 veterans) and I shared the stage that day with my friend and the Mayor I served with on the Myrtle Beach City Council for 12 years, John Rhodes. I hope the speech touches the moment and puts this most important holiday in its proper perspective.

As we heard last week, the Netherlands government had decided by January 1902 that the South Africa war was no longer viable for the Boers. Even the latest successes in March where General De la Rey and Jan Smuts had been victorious in battles in the western Transvaal and Northern Cape respectively had failed to really convince their closest ally in Europe that they were likely to defeat the British. The successes by Smuts around Okiep were more good news but all of these skirmishes were in the non-strategic parts of South Africa. The Boers could do nothing now about the increased production on the mines for one, which began producing gold and other commodities. While much of the country was still denuded, burnt, destroyed, the main cities were functioning and things were slowly returning to a version of normal. There were around 6000 gold mine stamps in South Africa at the start of the war. These are machines that crush rock, before the all-important metal within is extracted. Whether it is copper, gold, silver or any other precious mineral inside a rock, the mine stamp was used to pulverise the material, from where the ore would be removed. Most were steam or water driven and the vast majority had been mothballed at the start of the war as miners fled Johannesburg. But by January 1902 at least 1 075 of these mine stamps were functioning in the Transvaal. Gold output was surging. From a lowly 7 400 ounces in May 1901 to a much more productive 70 000 ounces in January 1902. The financiers were happier, the British Empire was getting some of its money back, things were looking up. February production climbed still further, to 81 000 ounces, and by March 1 700 mine stamps were online and 104 000 ounces of gold found its way onto the trains south to South Africa's ports. That was still some way off the 300 000 ounces the mines were pumping out before the start of the Boer war, but you can imagine how each ounce was putting the bounce back in the bankers' steps as they read weekly updates in their smoking rooms in London. Lord Kitchener had accepted a request by the Boers for their generals and political leadership to meet to discuss possible terms after he reached out to President Burgher of the Transvaal. In England, Rudyard Kipling was churning out his poems and stories and he wrote at this time that “Not by lust of peace or show, Not by peace herself betrayed, Peace herself must they forego, Til that peace be fitly made…” Like Milner, Kipling believed the Boers must be made to come to the peace table with cap in hand – not as equals but as a vanquished people. Meanwhile, that icon of empire, Cecil John Rhodes had died at the age of 48. The sudden announcement on March 26th 1902 was a shock to many, although the man who gave his name to an entire country was not exactly loved. Remember how he had bullied and mentally tortured the poor Kekewitch, commander of the British forces in Kimberley during the siege? His stint in Cape politics had also been a disaster. And he was arrested in September 1901 in an extremely unsavoury fraud case involving a promiscuous Russian princess. I don't have the space to cover that here, but if you're interested go Google princess Radziwill. She was one of a kind.
