In this week's episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Brent Sohngen, a professor at the Ohio State University and a university fellow at Resources for the Future, about the intersecting forces that are helping curb and reverse deforestation in Latin America. Sohngen discusses the origins of his research on forests in Latin America; the relationship between economic conditions, technological innovations, and the health of forests in Latin American countries; how property rights and community ownership can motivate effective stewardship of forests; and ongoing efforts to protect forests in Latin America and across the world. For such a slender volume, Ursula K. Le Guin's world changing novel, The Lathe of Heaven (1971), had enough going on to splinter off two different adaptations over time. Nate and Lizzy are joined by return guest Jonathan Franklin, and the trio chisels away at the layers of the book and the TV movies from 1980 (dir. David Loxton and Fred Barzyk) and 2002 (dir. Philip Haas). Join them as they spin out theories on dreams, taoism, art, and the illusion of control.
Neal makes an empassioned case for the return of the sitcom theme song, considers assembling a whale stomach survival kit, provides a brief orientation for new listeners, has a go at defining the parameters for a study of the interchangeability of potato and chicken skins, proposes a Russian doll solution to the property crisis and discusses catcher glove anatomy for couriers, the trouble with swimming hats, an extra level between parents and offspring, the baker's fillet, The Million Dollar Homepage (and Frank from The Overnightscape.com‘s pixels), contact lenses user psychology, a rare blindness rant involving shoving lasers somewhere, how Spielberg boosted your self confidence using intervals, why Batman needs his own genre, a cure for credits overruns on The Office (US TV), Mr Belvedere (US TV), a career in xylophony, AI that swears at you, Ever Decreasing Circles (BBC TV), how to confuse barman, cat and narrator, cat bar stories on The Moth podcast, dealing with psychics when you're dead, what happens when your cat inherits or purchases a car, repurposing the rain trouser, trouser knowledge as an IQ measurement and more. Parents of Black children are all too familiar with “The Talk.” “The Talk” where they teach their kids not to have their hands in their pockets at a store. “The Talk” where they teach their kids how to act around police in an attempt to keep themselves safe. “The Talk” where they teach their kids about the racism they're already experiencing and will continue to experience. But the truth is, “The Talk” isn't something that only families with Black children should be having — it's something white children and other Children of Color should be hearing about as well so they can be part of the solution. And this week on the podcast, I have a powerful interview with author Alicia D. Williams to talk about “The Talk,” which is the subject and title of her new children's book. Admit it - you've fantasized about what you would do if you hit the lottery and exactly how you would spend your millions - or billions. Spending a few dollars for a chance at a massive jackpot seems irresistible. Roughly half of all Americans buy at least one lottery ticket per year, despite the nearly impossible odds of winning. But some people take it much further. Unlike casino games and sports betting, messaging around playing the lottery can make it seem much less like actual gambling and more like a fun way to chase a dream of luxury and wealth. But some critics feel that the lottery uses predatory practices to disproportionately target low-income communities and people of color. Host Michel Martin talks to Jonathan D. Cohen, author of For a Dollar and a Dream: State Lotteries In Modern America. NPR reporter Jonathan Franklin contributed to this episode.
From Bloomberg Businessweek writer Michael Smith and Jonathan Franklin, author of 438 Days, now comes the highly-anticipated new book CABIN FEVER: The Harrowing Journey of a Cruise Ship at the Dawn of a Pandemic- a harrowing narrative of the Holland America cruise ship Zaandam, which set sail with a deadly and little-understood stowaway-COVID-19-only days before the world shut down in March 2020. In early 2020, the world was on edge. An ominous virus was spreading on different continents, and no one knew what the coming weeks would bring. Far from the hot spots, the cruise ship prepared to sail from Buenos Aires, Argentina, loaded with 1,200 passengers-Americans, Europeans and South Americans, plus 600 crew. Less than a week would pass before passengers and crew aboard Zaandam begin to fall sick. As the world's ports shut down, Zaandam was repeatedly denied safe harbor everywhere, leaving everyone on board in a maelstrom of uncertainty, paranoia, and fear. With only two doctors aboard and few medical supplies to test for or treat COVID-19, and ever-dwindling food and water, the ship wanders the oceans on an unthinkable journey. In a sea of wide-angle COVID books, CABIN FEVER is a compact thriller set in a terrifying floating microcosm-danger, perilous story twists, and creeping dread are woven into every page. Fear of the unknown ran rampant on board and gives the book a riveting, atmospheric feel. Smith and Franklin take readers behind the scenes of the ship's complex workings, and belowdecks into the personal lives of passengers and crew who were caught unprepared for the deadly ordeal that lay ahead: From a retired American school superintendent on a dream vacation with his wife of fifty-six years and an Argentine psychologist taking this trip to celebrate her sixty-fourth birthday, who's suddenly paralyzed with fear by increasingly alarming news reports, to an Indonesian laundry manager who's been toiling on Holland America cruise ships for thirty years, sending his monthly paycheck to his family back home.

Ephesians 1:15-23 — Sermon by Jonathan Franklin
On February 12 of this year, I read an article by Jonathan Franklin, a digital reporter on the News desk at National Public Radio here in the United States. The article, titled: Artwork from the Black Lives Matter memorial has a new home: the Library of Congress, lit a fire in me, and I immediately contacted Stephanie Stillo, Curator, Rare Book and Special Collections Division at the Library of Congress, to see if she could arrange a conversation with the people involved with saving the artwork from the Black Lives Matter memorial. Being the gracious lady she is and a regular guest on The Bookshop Podcast, Stephanie put me in touch with Aliza Leventhal, head of technical services in the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress; the same Aliza referenced in the NPR article. Aliza suggested I also speak with the two guardians of the fence, Nadine Seiler and Karen Irwin.Nadine Seiler, is a Black Activist Curator and archivist, working to preserve the Black Lives Matter Memorial Fence Collection. She sidelines as a home organizer, in her spare time.Karen is originally from Indiana but moved to NYC when she turned 40. She has been an actor, singer, entertainer, bartender. On this episode of How To!, we bring on Jonathan Franklin, author of 438 Days, to tell us the incredible story of José Salvador Alvarenga, a shark fisherman who survived at sea for over 14 months. Jonathan says that Alvarenga was a pro at being resourceful—surviving on bird meat, shark livers, and sea turtle blood—but the real key to his survival was mental. For much of his journey, Alvarenga took care of his younger companion, Jonathan says, and it was this caregiving motivation more than anything else that kept Alvarenga alive. The spotlight is on China's mining industry once again after 22 miners were trapped deep underground in Shandong Province for two weeks. Half of them were rescued, but 10 of their colleagues did not make it out alive and one miner is still missing. The story of the rescue is no-doubt a happy one but the real question is why did the mining company wait 30 hours to alert the authorities? Could more men have been saved? And do miners' lives in China and elsewhere matter? We find out with mine rescue expert Brian Robinson, author Jonathan Franklin who covered the 2010 Chile mine rescue and Apo Leong, a labour rights campaigner in Asia.

In this episode, Matt chats to Jonathan Franklin who is the author of 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea. On November 17, 2012, a pair of fishermen left the coast of Mexico for a weekend fishing trip in the open Pacific. That night, a violent storm ambushed them as they were fishing eighty miles offshore. As gale-force winds and ten-foot waves pummeled their small, open boat from all sides and nearly capsized them, captain Salvador Alvarenga and his crewmate cut away a two-mile-long fishing line and began a desperate dash through crashing waves as they sought the safety of port. Tune in as Matt and Jonathan chat about the anti-suicide message behind the back, Jonathan's second book and surviving when all seems lost.

In this edition, I’ll review three examples that demonstrate the power of conflict-driven isolation and how it can ratchet up tension and reader appeal. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine: A Novel by Gail Honeyman tells the story of three people enduring lives marked by isolation, and how they find their way out by opening their hearts to one another. Jonathan Franklin’s 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea, an example of literary nonfiction, recounts the astonishing experience of a man who left Mexico on a two-day fishing trip and washed up on a small Pacific Island more than a year later, half crazed from the horrific experience—the exposure, the deprivation, and the isolation. Sue Halpern’s collection of essays, Migrations to Solitude, examines the dichotomy that people yearn for solitude yet dread loneliness, and how sometimes when they wrestle with this paradox, they end up isolated. The post #5 Isolation: Merging Conflict With Isolation—Examples appeared first on Jane Cleland.

The Hate Expectations regulars, Lizzy and Nate, along with out-of-this-world special guest Jonathan Franklin, dig into America's past's potential future by watching and reading The Man Who Fell to Earth, the Walter Tevis sci-fi novel (1963), and the Nicolas Roeg directed David Bowie vehicle (1976). Much is made of how the filmmakers attempt something strange and curious, but ultimately alienate the delicate and sensitive source material. Creepy sex scenes are glossed over, the Watergate scandal is reinvestigated, and the trio tries desperately to inject logic where none likely exists. In the end, all the group can really take away from the experience is that when you get high you must inevitably come crashing back down. Well, that and cocaine is a hell of a thing.

"Jonathan Franklin is an investigative journalist who has reported for the New York Times, Boston Globe and the Guardian. Based in Santiago, Chile with his wife and 7 daughters he tends to live off the grid, especially when writing books. Or magazine stories in Esquire, GQ, Playboy, and Men’s Journal as he chronicles the world of extreme survival, cocaine madmen, and football mayhem, as well as the standard interviews with hit men, kidnappers and cocaine submarine commanders. In October 2010 Franklin secured a book deal to write 33 Men, the definitive account of the Chilean miners, a non fiction book about the experience of the miners in the 2010 Copiapó mining accident. He reported extensively from the San Jose mine for The Guardian and The Washington Post. Franklin's experiences and insider accounts became the basis of a 60 Minutes TV program about the miners, an article in People magazine, a series of audio lectures on the BBC and multiple articles around the world. Franklin says, "While 2,000 journalists were locked behind police lines, my 'Rescue Team' pass enabled me to experience up close the final six weeks of this miracle rescue. It was my honor to watch the drama unfold in its many moments of beauty and courage and comedy; and to see, first-hand, the profound unity that made this operation succeed." In 2015, he published the book 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea, based on the account of José Salvador Alvarenga, the Salvadoran fisherman who spent 14 months adrift in the Pacific Ocean." In this podcast Charles talks to Jonathan Franklin about how he became a world-famous investigative journalist. Jonathan recounts stories of starting a detective agency at the age of 10, investigating the dean's office at Brown University for admission corruption, digging through the trash cans of the Rhode Island AND San Francisco Police Department, conning his way backstage at a U2 concert and then meeting the band, getting hired as a mortician at the Dover Air Force Base and uncovering the true number of dead American troops and more. It's clear that Jonathan possesses a unique ability to get the inside track. This podcast is an inside look at the man who got 2 of this century's biggest stories: 33 Men and 438 Days.
