Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious Lectionary: 207The Saint of the day is Saint Elizabeth Ann SetonSaint Elizabeth Ann Seton's Story Mother Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. She founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. She opened the first American parish school and established the first American Catholic orphanage. All this she did in the span of 46 years while raising her five children. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton is a true daughter of the American Revolution, born August 28, 1774, just two years before the Declaration of Independence. By birth and marriage, she was linked to the first families of New York and enjoyed the fruits of high society. Reared a staunch Episcopalian, she learned the value of prayer, Scripture and a nightly examination of conscience. Her father, Dr. Richard Bayley, did not have much use for churches but was a great humanitarian, teaching his daughter to love and serve others. The early deaths of her mother in 1777 and her baby sister in 1778 gave Elizabeth a feel for eternity and the temporariness of the pilgrim life on earth. Far from being brooding and sullen, she faced each new “holocaust,” as she put it, with hopeful cheerfulness. At 19, Elizabeth was the belle of New York and married a handsome, wealthy businessman, William Magee Seton. They had five children before his business failed and he died of tuberculosis. At 30, Elizabeth was widowed and penniless, with five small children to support. While in Italy with her dying husband, Elizabeth witnessed Catholicity in action through family friends. Three basic points led her to become a Catholic: belief in the Real Presence, devotion to the Blessed Mother and conviction that the Catholic Church led back to the apostles and to Christ. Many of her family and friends rejected her when she became a Catholic in March 1805. To support her children, she opened a school in Baltimore. From the beginning, her group followed the lines of a religious community, which was officially founded in 1809. The thousand or more letters of Mother Seton reveal the development of her spiritual life from ordinary goodness to heroic sanctity. She suffered great trials of sickness, misunderstanding, the death of loved ones (her husband and two young daughters) and the heartache of a wayward son. She died January 4, 1821, and became the first American-born citizen to be beatified (1963) and then canonized (1975). She is buried in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Reflection Elizabeth Ann Seton had no extraordinary gifts. She was not a mystic or stigmatic. She did not prophesy or speak in tongues. She had two great devotions: abandonment to the will of God and an ardent love for the Blessed Sacrament. She wrote to a friend, Julia Scott, that she would prefer to exchange the world for a “cave or a desert.” “But God has given me a great deal to do, and I have always and hope always to prefer his will to every wish of my own.” Her brand of sanctity is open to everyone if we love God and do his will. If you were to ask yourself or friends in your inner circle, do you have visibility to the household finances, what would their answer be? On this episode of the Power Of Women podcast Di gets enlightened by wealth coach, Julia Scott, and if your answer to the aforementioned question is “No”, then you need to listen too. Julia was an Accountant and wealth management expert who trusted her husband to manage their family finances. Just as many of us do, right? Well as it turned out, she was wrong. It wasn't until her marriage broke down that she discovered her trust was misplaced. She was cut off financially and left living on welfare. Motivated by this experience and putting her professional skills to work, today, Julia is a successful self-made woman, and she has made it her business to help others achieve the same in building their own financial security. Dr Julia Scott and Dr Gary McAuliffe discuss what to do with a suspected monkeypox case.
If you thought you knew John and Julia Scott, you're going to get a whole new look into their personalities here on our podcast today. You'll hear about John Scott's roots growing up in New Zealand and the similarities between clans, even from different parts of the world. Our conversation looks at how ancient rituals from different cultures effect us still to this day. We're asking some difficult questions, like can anyone ever really teach you anything? And how can you claim your own sovereignty and self-responsibility? John talks about how when we're in alignment with our natural selves we coexist with nature, but when we live from a place of ego we can't help but destroy the planet. We need to stop ‘the doing' and start ‘the being.' We're all programmed to be something, or do something, but this creates a sense of separateness. Like actors lost in playing a part and creating a separate reality we've lost site of who we truly are. What is the key to connecting back with our true self? The sound. If we can listen on a pure level, we will understand that everything is already perfect. Come sit with us by the proverbial campfire, as we tell stories and discuss philosophy, there is always something new to share… And we're still learning. ❤ SIGN UP FOR MY FREE 5-DAY ANCIENT BREATHING CHALLENGE! Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, Religious Lectionary: 213All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Elizabeth Ann SetonMother Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. Senate President Susan Wagle, a Republican with 30 years of experience in the Kansas Legislature, has never been mistaken for a shrinking violent. She took on an otherwise all-male Republican field to make the case she was best suited to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, the dean of Kansas politics. As the primary campaign season was about to catch fire in March, COVID-19 began consuming the nation's political oxygen. Then, one of her children, 38-year-old Julia Scott passed away.

John Scott has been practicing Ashtanga yoga since 1987. He was introduced to the practice by early Ashtanga yoga pioneers Derek Ireland and Radha Warell at the legendary Skyros/Practice Place in Greece. John is greatly respected and loved by his students (of whom Amy Hughes is one).John's Teaching: John still practices and explores the techniques of the counted method of Ashtanga passed to him and is continually discovering new meanings to the gems of wisdom that Pattabhi Jois left for his students to pass on. He connects to yoga practitioners with refreshing insight into the practice on a physical, anatomical and spiritual levels and is constantly improvising new and unique ways to engage and inspire practitioners with ashtanga and the counted method.John Worldwide: In John's mission to pass on Pattabhi Jois' Counted Method he travels the World literally Counting – he learns to count in the national language of his host (usually his host is a graduate of John's teacher training) to bridge the cultural ‘gap' (“mind that gap because therein lies extra ordinary wisdom”) and thus he draws the community in to the shared language of yoga – Sanskrit. From John's world adventure, sharing Jois' teachings, an ever growing International Yoga Community is blossoming.

A nocturne is a piece of music that's inspired by, or which evokes, the night. It's also the name of a podcast I've been enjoying recently. Nocturne is made by the independent American audio producer Vanessa Lowe, who's intrigued by how people and places change as day turns into night. We play excerpts from a couple of her recent stories. 'Blackfish' is all about a Cornish fisherman called Malcolm Saunders who does some of his best work at night, fishing off the coast of the south west of England. Meanwhile, if you've ever stayed somewhere without power, or just turned off the lights at night so you can light a few candles and enjoy the way it makes the room look different, then you might appreciate 'Candle Hour'. It's the story of writer and journalist Julia Scott who was finding that technology use and 24/7 access to often negative news stories wasn't the best preparation for bed. So she thought back to the power cuts and snow storms in her childhood in Canada decades before, and started a relaxing ritual before bed.
There has never been a world without tragedy and heartache and injustice. But there has also never before been a time when human beings have had constant access to the breadth of human suffering. Our technology bathes us in this information, and it can be a challenge to not dissolve into a mass of emotion, or just go numb. Julia Scott found herself facing this dilemma, and intuitively creating a ritual for herself, the seeds of which were planted decades earlier.

As storms raged through Oklahoma in 2013, Martha Lillard waited them out from inside her iron lung. She is one of just dozens of polio survivors who still rely on their decades-old machines. The Last of the Iron Lungs is a portrait of Martha, who contracted polio in 1953. To Martha, the 1940s iron lung is comfort and survival. As a researcher explains in the story, newer machines operate differently, forcing air into the lungs in a way that doesn’t feel right for iron lung patients. Producer Julia Scott sent us some thoughts about her experience reporting this story: “Martha’s story is fascinating enough on its own. It’s a radio producer’s dream to be able to capture the kinds of sounds no one will ever hear again – the mechanical bellows, pushing air through a machine older than Martha herself. “Reporting this story made me realize how distant and abstracted polio has become in our national memory. Martha’s bedroom is dominated by her iron lung, a relic of history that most people my age may never even have heard of (I’m 32). To her, it’s a trusted companion and a lifelong friend. But the iron lung symbolized one of the most terrifying, unpredictable health epidemics of the 20th century. Archival photos like this one brought home the sheer scale of the outbreak – and the prospect of lifelong paralysis that thousands of people endured. “One of the highlights of this project was being able to try out Martha’s iron lung – something I was a little scared to do. I laid down on the sliding cot, pushed my head through her foam neck collar and she sealed me in. It wasn’t claustrophobic, but I wasn’t counting on how hard it would be stop drawing breath and let the respirator take over pushing my diaphragm in and out, forcing air to whoosh into my throat. ‘Stop trying to breathe!’ Martha instructed. For her, lying in the iron lung is the most comfortable sensation in the world. “Since the story has aired I’ve received emails from people whose families were touched by polio, grandfathers and great-aunts who spent time in an iron lung but graduated to breathing on their own. They see Martha’s story as part of the same continuum.” This episode was reported and produced by Julia Scott. It was hosted for this episode of Transistor by Genevieve Sponsler and mixed for Transistor by Erika Lantz. Image of Martha Lillard © Julia Scott.

Welcome to the future, Sir: At the cusp of virtual reality; In "Poly Love," Julia Scott reports on polyamory in the Bay Area; StoryCorps: One mom, two dads, and one baby; and (Crosscurrents' favorite) local band The Low Rollers.
Host Leah Rose talks with Julia Scott to talk about her article "Poly Love" from the February 2015 issue of San Francisco Magazine. Julia's article looks at the group dynamics of polyamorous relationships and profiles married couples who manage to openly maintain relationships with outside partners, as well as people who are committed to multiple people at the same time. As if keeping up with one partner wasn't hard enough, you can imagine, polyamorous relationships can get a little messy. Their three biggest pitfalls, Julia points out, are jealousy, time management, and lack of clarity. And while it may seem like poly people are just swingers in disguise, Julia found that many of the relationships are often more cerebral than sexy.
