Robert F. Kennedy Jr's speculated vice presidential pick, Nicole Shanahan exhibits a tendency towards left-leaning ideologies, particularly, her notable support for 'criminal justice' initiatives. This is a surprising turn as Kennedy Jr. staunchly showcased a newfound political independence this past October, parting ways with his previous affiliation - the Democratic Party. He announced, 'It's time I charted my independent course, away from the Democrats and indeed, all political factions.' Despite this declaration, Shanahan's record places her firmly within the Democrat camp, with multiple contributions towards Joe Biden and the Democratic Party. Kennedy Jr. has significantly distanced himself from the Democratic Party, seeking to cultivate an independent presence in the political realm. However, his veep choice, Shanahan, does not display a similar political middleground. Her historical affinities lean towards Democrats, with ample financial support for Joe Biden, reaching into the thousands. Drawing from a report by the New York Times, Shanahan, once married to Google's co-founder Sergey Brin, bears a long history of bankrolling Democratic campaigns. This included President Biden's 2020 race when she offered substantial donations. Interestingly, she also backed Kennedy Jr.'s presidency campaign in May 2023 when he still identified as a Democrat. Additional details reveal that Shanahan provided considerable contributions towards the Biden campaign in 2020, a hefty sum of $30,000, as indicated by Federal Election Commission (FEC) data. Moreover, she has made recurring donations to ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising entity, and even the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Beyond this, Shanahan has actively participated in influencing political decisions regarding 'criminal justice.' In an interview with San Francisco Magazine in 2021, she proudly referred to herself as a significant funding contributor for 'Measure J' in Los Angeles County. The said 'Measure J' involves changes to the local charter. It stipulates that no less than 10% of locally created unrestricted income must be re-invested in community development and alternate solutions to incarceration. The measure also prohibits the misappropriation of these funds towards carceral systems and law enforcement agencies. In that same 2021 San Francisco Magazine interview, Shanahan put forth her perspective on the George Floyd incident. She proposed that the presence of a mental health professional at the scene could have potentially altered the course of the tragic event. According to the magazine, Shanahan's commitment to transformative justice predates the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. Shanahan shared, 'About five years ago, I suggested to the head of Sergey's foundation that 'criminal justice reform' was poised to be one of the defining issues of our generation. I am proud to have contributed significantly to 'Measure J' in Los Angeles County, rerouting some of the law enforcement budget towards mental and social support services.' Expanding upon her thoughts, Shanahan argued that the arrival of a mental health professional during George Floyd's arrest could have defused the tension, maybe even saving his life. These sentiments reflect Shanahan's deep-rooted belief in transforming the criminal justice system. Moreover, Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, highlighted an additional aspect of Shanahan's political inclinations. According to him, Shanahan is a substantial donor to George Gascon, the prosecutor reputed for his pro-crime stance and backed by Soros. Gascon achieved notoriety for his role in upsetting the San Francisco status quo and is currently viewed as detrimental to Los Angeles. Concluding his assessment, Kirk labelled Shanahan's selection as a clear left-leaning tactic by Kennedy Jr., aimed at consolidating his progressive credentials. He noted this move could potentially alienate common-sense independents and centrist voters, who are wary of escalating crime rates yet intrigued by Kennedy Jr.'s campaign. Kirk further explained his concern: 'Kennedy Jr.'s VP pick, Nicole Shanahan, has financially backed George Gascon, the pro-crime, Soros-backed prosecutor whose tenure has led to negative consequences for San Francisco and is currently disturbing the peace in LA.' He also acknowledged her support for 'Measure J,' a Los Angeles initiative that rerouted spending from law enforcement, a detail that further corroborates Shanahan's alignment with left-leaning ideologies. Her involvement with these initiatives signals her political persuasion. The dynamics of Kennedy Jr.'s political campaign continue to evolve with Nicole Shanahan's potential inclusion as his vice-presidential pick. Though he aims to redefine himself as an independent candidate, his choice in Shanahan, with her well-documented support for Democratic causes, blurs this self-professed independence. The objective now lies in whether this would impact Kennedy Jr.'s campaign, especially in terms of attracting centrist voters and those with a practical approach to crime prevention. Only time will tell if this mixture of independence and distinct left-leaning sympathies can strike a favorable chord with the electorate. Jay Bordeleau, the owner, creator, and mastermind behind one of the top Jazz venues in San Francisco, Mr. Tipple's, has always loved the arts and is constantly driven by his “it's-so-crazy-it-just-might-work” ambition. He was able to combine this deeply rich cooperative leadership style with a profound passion for hospitality while designing, building, and operating his first restaurant: Maven. Jay's collaborative work style was formalized while playing drums behind the orchestra as a music performance major at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. And his life-long passion for wine also led him to earning his Certified Sommelier and Advanced Wine Specialist title from Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Mr. Tipple's is a cozy yet elegant jazz club, cocktail bar and restaurant with three distinct - but also overlapping- types of clientele. Some come in for the music, others for the expertly crafted and carefully poured drinks and a third group for the dumplings, bao and clay pot rice. Adding to that is its alcohol-free CBD cocktails, and gratuity-free pre-calculated tipping policy, all of which make the club feel honest and welcoming. Join us for a deep dive into Mr. Tipple's with Jay and hear why it's been rated the best jazz club by San Francisco Magazine; one we personally enjoy each time we visit “The City by the Bay.”

The best cookbooks are so much more than collections of recipes. They're windows into a life or a place or a time or a way of thinking. The very best cookbooks are all of these things at once. Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora is one of these rare books. Edited by author-activist Bryant Terry, and published by his new imprint 4 Color Books, Black Food is the work of more than a hundred chefs, artists, and scholars who contributed recipes, artwork, and essays to a book that is as visually stunning as it is thought-provoking. Think Toni Morrison's The Black Book (which served as a template for Black Food), but also think sweet potato leaves with eggplant and butter beans, and peach cobbler with nutmeg sauce. In this episode of Book Dreams, Eve and Julie talk with Bryant about the making of Black Food, his childhood experiences on his grandfather's urban farm, and his evolution from carnivorous high school athlete to vegan cookbook author. They also discuss the future of 4 Color Books and its mission to “push forward more diversity within the food system” by publishing visually arresting books by authors of color. Bryant is the author of six cookbooks. He's also a James Beard and NAACP Image Award-winning chef, educator, and author, renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just, and sustainable food system. Bryant is the Founder and Editor in Chief of 4 Color Books, a new imprint of Penguin Random House and Ten Speed Press. Since 2015, he has been the Chef in Residence at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, where he creates public programming at the intersection of food, farming, health, activism, art, and culture. Bryant's most recent book, Black Food: Stories, Art, and Recipes from Across the African Diaspora, was the first book to be published by his new imprint and the most critically acclaimed American cookbook published in 2021. It landed on the Best Of lists of The New Yorker, Boston Globe, The Washington Post, NPR, Los Angeles Times, Glamour, and many other publications. San Francisco Magazine included Bryant among the 11 Smartest People in the Bay Area Food Scene and Fast Company named him one of Nine People Who Are Changing the Future of Food. Bryant's mentor, Alice Waters, says, “Bryant Terry knows that good food should be an everyday right, and not a privilege.” Find us on Twitter (@bookdreamspod) and Instagram (@bookdreamspodcast), or email us at contact@bookdreamspodcast.com. There should be space in these institutions to talk about these issues, to build a community around these issues."24:08 Bryant: "I want people to imagine activism outside of just on the ground, confrontational protests on the streets, or grassroots base building. And to be clear, those things are the foundation and the cornerstone of movement building. But everyone can't be in the streets like that."37:32 Koya: "I think it's so important that people understand that men and women and gender roles and things like that don't have to be. And we all have masculine and feminine energy and how if we nurture both of those sides of ourselves, we can really grow and thrive."42:54 Bryant: "One of the most important things which our family has been on the journey on is healing generational traumas and being aware that we so often pass down these traumas unknowingly just through the way that we live and not knowing that these are toxic behaviors."49:25 Bryant: "The cornerstone of this parenting model is that shaming, blaming, isolating, and punishing children, it doesn't work. It may work in the short term. If you have a kid and you're doing something and you shame, blame, punish, yeah it might stop that behavior but what it also does is it instills fear, it starts to chip away at their self esteem, it doesn't create empowered people who are gonna be empowered adults." 55:43 Bryant: "The more that we can do this introspection and recognize that these larger systems and histories have impacted the way that we interact with each other, I think it will get us closer to healing."58:15 Bryant: "An industrialized food system that's largely controlled by a handful of multinational corporations, we need to understand that so much of the way that the food is grown, the way that it's transported, the way that it's cooked, the way that it's presented to us, these are decisions that are made by a small handful of people."59:08 Bryant: "We need to be organized against capitalism. I'm just gonna say it. If people don't understand that capitalism is not like if I just work hard I can make enough money. Capitalism is about these institutions that are concentrating so much wealth and making so many decisions about these systems that we have to push back against them."Please leave a five-star review for the Get Loved Up Podcast. I have known James for years, his culinary skills are well above my pay grade, opening the restaurant of his dreams Commis in his home city of Oakland. All while driving this passion to make delicious food in a town he loves inspires me everyday. Ok I will just say it James you rock!! Born in Ubonratchathani,Thailand and raised in Oakland, California,James Syhabout is the Chef/Proprietor of Commis, the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Oakland since 2010; Hawker Fare, with both Oakland and San Franciscooutposts; and casual, beer-centric restaurant, The Dock, in West Oakland. Named “Best New Chef” in2010by the eponymousFood &Winemagazine,Syhabouthas been recognized not only for his skill and dedication to the culinary arts, but for reviving the dining scene in his hometown of Oakland. Before opening Commis and Hawker Fare, Syhaboutformally studied at California Culinary Academy inSan Franciscoand developed his craftat numerous Michelin starred restaurants around the globe, beginning asChef de Partie at Manresa(Los Gatos, California). Within a few months, Syhabout advanced toSous Chef, where his close workwith Chef David Kinchinspired hisinterest in different European cuisines and international culinary practices. After two years at Manresa, Syhabout ventured out to continue hisculinary education in Europe, where he worked with Chef Heston Blumenthal atThe Fat Duck(Bray, United Kingdom), followed by Mugaritz in the Basque country, near San Sebastian(Gizpuzkoa, Spain), while experiencing numerous Michelin-starredmeals along the way.Syhabout stayed in Spain as Chef de Partie at Alkimia(Barcelona, Spain) cooking new Catalan cuisine, before spending a season at Ferran Adria's ground breaking restaurantEl Bulli(Roses, Spain). Following his continued culinary travels through France and Italy, Syhabout returned to Manresa as a consultant training, working, sharing and developing new ideas from his experiencesabroad. In 2006,Syhabout worked with Chef Daniel Patterson to open Coi(San Francisco, California), providing him with the invaluable experience of opening a restaurant, from building codes and menu development, to inventory and the hiring and training of staff. Following Coi, Syhabout was scouted by the Plumpjack Group in 2006 to fill the Executive Chef position at their flagship restaurant, Plumpjack Café(San Francisco, California). Within the first year, he earned a ravethree and half star review from Michael Bauer in the San Francisco Chronicleand was recognized as a “Rising Star Chef”by San Francisco Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle and StarChefs.Com. With Syhabout at the helm,Plumpjack Café became one of the top draws for dining out in the San Francisco Bay Area as voted by Food & Wine magazine and was propelled back onto the Top 100 restaurant list compiled by San Francisco Chronicle. After accumulating numerous accolades at Plumpjack Cafe, Syhabout was recruited back to Manresa in the highly coveted role of Chef de Cuisine. His returnto Manresa was largely motivated bythe restaurant's involvement with Love Apple Farms and grower Cynthia Sandberg. The biodynamic farm provides bountiful heirloom varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, edibleflowers and seeds grown solely for the restaurant. Syhabout's involvement with the farm was a collaborative effort with Cynthia, focused on finding seeds of rare varietals and selectingwhat to grow for the restaurant through the changing seasons. Hisexperience working with Cynthia shaped his vision when developing menuswith a truefarm-to-plateapproach.In 2010, Syhabout's travels, studies and varied culinary experiences culminated in the launch of his first restaurant, Commis, the first fine-dining restaurant in Oakland, which was promptly awarded with one Michelin star a mere months after opening. In stark contrast to Commis, Syhabout opened Hawker Fare in 2011, in the very Oakland location of his mother's former restaurant, serving the Laotian Thai food he grew up with in a casual setting. Next came Box & Bells Eating House and The Dock(later to becomeOld Kan), both in Oakland, followed by the 2015 openingof a Hawker Fare San Francisco, and new Hawker Fare offshoot, Hawking Bird, in Oakland's Temescal area in December 2017. Syhabout currently operates Commis, Hawker Fare San Francisco, Old Kan and Hawking Bird. His first cookbook, Hawker Fare: Stories & Recipes from a Refugee Chef's Thai Isan & Lao Roots, is released in January 2018 under Anthony Bourdain's Ecco imprint.Additionally, Syhabouthasappeared on The Food Network's “Iron Chef America”twice,asSous Chef forbothMourad Lahlou and David Kinch, aiding them in achievingtriumphant victories.
Independent Contractors No More? Shannon Liss-Riordan of Lichten & Liss-Riordan, widely recognized as one of the nation's top plaintiffs' class action employment lawyers and described by San Francisco Magazine as “hav[ing] achieved a kind of celebrity unseen in the legal world since Ralph Nader sued General Motors,” joins host Richard Levick of LEVICK to discuss her pioneering work in reshaping industries where employees have long been classified as independent contractors. Best Lawyers in America has called her “the reigning plaintiffs' champion” and has said she is “probably the best known wage class action lawyer on the plaintiff side in this area, if not the entire country.” She is currently representing workers in a number of cases against “gig economy” companies that save on labor costs by misclassifying employees as independent contractors.
Bryant Terry is a James Beard & NAACP Image Award-winning chef, educator, and author renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just, and sustainable food system. In 2015, he was named the inaugural Chef-in-Residence for the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco. His newest book, Black Food, has just been released – a visual and spiritual feast of recipes, art, and stories from over 100 black cultural luminaries. Many know Bryant as the inspirational, artful, and inventive person that he is, trailblazing on many fronts from bridging the gap between black food and veganism in the cookbook space to exposing and celebrating the lost treasures and traditions of historical black culture .But behind all this, Bryant has experienced a personal journey that has enabled all this work to come to fruition. It's these life lessons and skills that we touch upon in this very authentic episode. You'll hear Bryant talk about how important it is to manage you, so you don't get in your own way, what his mom referred to as “blocking your blessings”. He also credits quiet in the sparking his potentiality at times when it laid dormant. And of course we talk about how he defines success. What I love most about Bryant is his keen self-awareness, and his unrelenting desire to show up in a way that resembles who he truly is in the purest sense. It's that uncompromising purity that touches so many. --More on Bryant:Bryant Terry is a James Beard & NAACP Image Award-winning chef, educator, and author renowned for his activism to create a healthy, just, and sustainable food system. Wines: 7 Cellars Farm Collection 2020 Chardonnay and 2017 Domaine des Préauds Pouilly-FuisseGuests: Ryan Prichard, Winemaker - Three Sticks Wines and Paul Doroussay of Pierre Clos ImportsDid you know when we first started Wines To Find, Chardonnay was not a go-to variety for either of us? For one of us, the heavy oak that was characteristic of many of the offerings was a major turn-off, for the other, they never really rocked her world so it wasn't worth the wine dollars and calories to continue to try them.Through our journey of expanding our palate and wine knowledge, we have learned so much about the wine-making process and growing regions for this wildly popular grape varietal, that we both now know what regions and techniques are preferable for our own specific tastes so that we will enjoy our purchases of Chardonnay going forward. So we're sharing what we have learned in this episode! We share portions of previous interviews that explain the differences between French-grown Chardonnay grapes and their wines versus those from California and areas of both growing regions that not only produce great wines, but are known as VALUE REGIONS.Hear from Three Sticks winemaker, Ryan Prichard, who was awarded the 2020 San Francisco Magazine's Rising Star Winemaker of the Year and, more importantly to us, the guy who made the first Chardonnay to receive a 5 CORK rating from Sandy.Listen today for tips and tricks on picking a great Chardonnay!Wines To Find Podcast, Finalist in the 12th Annual TASTE AWARDS in four categories. -Best Drink or Beverage Program-Best New Series-Best Single Topic Series-Best Food or Drink PodcastWe have been listed in the Top 30 wine podcasts! https://blog.feedspot.com/wine_podcasts/********************************************Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winestofind)Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winestofind)

Episode 569 Steve Raye interviews Alder Yarrow About Alder: Alder has spent the last 25 years creating customer experiences for some of the world’s top brands. He is trusted by visionary executives to help rethink or create entirely new brand experiences and products that disrupt existing industries or create entirely new markets. When celebrity businessman George Zimmer wanted to create his new online company Generation Tux, he asked Alder and his team to design the entire brand experience. Alder began his career as an information architect, interaction designer, and UX designer even as those terms were being defined in the industry. As the Web progressed from simple home pages to e-commerce transactions, so did Alder rapidly progress from designer to executive leader in TUX design. Along the way, he designed Williams-Sonoma's first online wedding registry and the first end-to-end online car purchase experience for Autonation. At Sapient he helped define the company’s global user experience design process and opened the company’s Tokyo office with a team of fellow executives. In 2005 Alder founded HYDRANT, a customer experience and product design firm. Alder has led mission-critical brand and experience design engagements for brands including Google, Twitter, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Gymboree, Cisco, HP, Motorola, Fidelity, Anki, Blurb, Starwood, Subaru, and Tesla Motors, often serving as an outsourced product design leader. Most recently Alder served as the Chief Experience Officer at Cibo, a brand and customer experience agency (acquired by Projekt202) dedicated to creating winning brands and products by applying design thinking to business. As CXO, Alder managed the company's UX and Strategy offerings. In that capacity, he developed the company’s unique Brand Experience Strategy approach and provided thought leadership on brand, customer experience, and UX by writing and speaking. San Francisco Magazine has called Alder “The Wine World’s Brightest Cyberstar” and he is widely accepted as a pioneer of wine blogging. His Vinography.Com blog has been published daily since 2004 and was nominated for a James Beard award in 2013. Since November of 2011 Alder has been a columnist for Jancis Robinson. He is also the author of “The Essence of Wine,” a unique coffee table book about wine’s flavors and aromas named one of the best wine books of 2014 by The New York Times. In 2013, Alder was inducted to the Wine Media Guild of New York’s Wine Writers Hall of Fame, an honor he shares with only 24 other living wine writers. Find out which one of them went vegan after writing this book, and get inspired to clean and brighten up your diet. In this episode, Heather, Carolyn and Blair discuss: Creating the plant-based menu at Wildseed in San Francisco Take the politics out of eating vegan, and focus on eating good food that is healthy and tastes good Better than Bouillon Umami flavor, found in tomatoes, mushrooms, cooked mushrooms, cheese How Blair went vegan for 30 days, and discovered a lot in that time Recognizing that it’s not easy to be vegan in certain areas of the world, and even in certain areas of the United States Why this way of eating isn’t just for girls in yoga pants; the frat guys are also eating it too Blair’s dad’s blood pressure and sugar levels went down while they were visiting for one month and eating plant-based How to get protein through certain grains like quinoa Why eating plant-based makes you think more about what you are putting into your body Beyond Meat products How globalism is changing local palates Miyoko’s Cultured Vegan Butter Gochujang, the Korean spice mix Blair and Carolyn’s favorite recipes from the book How at Wildseed, they lowered the sugar content in the desserts by 30% and then noticed that the desserts were flying off the shelf. “You taste more of whatever is in there, rather than this sugar bomb. Things taste a lot brighter. Sugar masks the other flavors.” The six tastes in Ayurveda The book Salt by Mark Kurlansky – and how the priests in ancient Egypt were not allowed to eat salt because it was through to evoke sexual desire How to get kids to eat more plants Why some vegans won’t eat figs Carolyn Warsham is an editor, writer, full-time vegetarian, and life-long obsessor over good things to eat. In today’s episode, we have Billy Polson who is a nationally recognized performance coach, fitness entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and the founder/co-owner of DIAKADI. As a fitness performance coach, he was named by Men's Journal Magazine as one of the Top 100 Trainers in America, as well as one of the Top 10 Trainers in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle and Haute Magazine. Peers and other fitness professionals look to Billy as a fitness advisor and business coach for good reason - Billy devotes his own life and energy towards helping others learn how to live the strong, healthy, successful and happy life they were meant to live. How did your background inspired you to be where you are today? (05:15) - From his undergraduate and post-graduate studies, his national certifications, his 20+ years of experience working as a coach and trainer, and a lifetime spent as a competitive athlete, Billy knows body dynamics, injury prevention and how to maximize personal performance. He puts it all together and is the rare trainer who has the knowledge to give, the experience to relate, the passion to share, and the natural gift to teach. - Since joining the fitness industry, Billy's vision was to create a cutting-edge training facility exclusively for the Bay Area's leading independent fitness trainers and coaches. DIAKADI is that vision, and has been voted the Best Place to Get Fit by San Francisco Magazine, the Best Program Design by 7x7 magazine, as well as the Top Trainers and/or Gym in San Francisco for 14+ years. In 2015, with the intention of helping fitness entrepreneurs advance their skills as business owners, Billy co-founded DIAKADI’s Business Movement, which continues to assist hundreds of fitness professionals worldwide with building and growing their most successful fitness businesses. - I moved to California on sabbatical leave for one year and I ran into Spencer Johnson. And he wrote children's books. I don't know if you ever remember any of those now, the value tales for kids. If the value of courage, the story of Jackie Robinson, the value of believing in yourself, the story of Helen Keller, and then Margie met him first and I got to a party in hand, carried him over and said, you guys ought to get together and write a children's book for managers. What can we conclude about the ideal leadership? (09:36) - So many things cause it's taken away all our distractions and in cause look at that. And so that kind of reminds me of when you say, you know, all the things that being of service and helping others. And, and how do you find that? This is kind of a segue, but how do you find that has this moment in time that we're living right now cause you to go deeper into thinking about you and your, where you stand - Supporting each other, the brotherhood it's it's, it's so divisive right now that this, this funny, bring this up because this is completely the opposite of what's going on right now. You know, that's caused us to be in this where we are, and we really need this. To be a philosophy because we really need to come back together - Before he became a professional on your path and where you are now. And did you even know this is what you're going to do? Yeah, I probably, my, my funniest jumping point for that is, uh, in college, uh, trying to decide my major and I've always loved and enjoyed psychology and kind of what makes people tick and what brings people together. - I want to be doing something that is fulfilling and I love to do, and again, We'll make a difference in this world. And, uh, that's when my pivot came from using statistics and using the work I've been doing in technology and heading into growing my own private practice as an independent trainer. How the more you don't know, that's just how you grow? (17:23) - That psychology and that, that human interaction got balanced out with statistics and analytics and numbers and making sure that I was able to really meet both sides there. The example I give of, there are a lot of folks who, and it's not a bad thing, but there are a lot of folks who they love fitness. - They study fitness, their whole college and they get out and they're so great at training. But when they try and open their own practice, that other skillset is a challenge for them. I was very fortunate that I got a little bit of a taste of both worlds and that yes, everything leads to who we are today. - And we have to give everything credit, the most challenging things that we face. Often being obviously the most uplifting and people hate hearing that, especially this year. Right? That's right. Yeah. That's what I wanted. That's what I want our listeners to hear is that everything you've done is setting you up for. - So maybe the lesson is that. Yeah, you simply know you're not good at it in terms of you don't enjoy doing it, or you really don't want that to be part of what you're doing. Um, even if that's the takeaway, what, Oh my gosh, what a valuable takeaway, because then. You take the pressure off yourself? Oh, I should be doing computers. Today I speak with William Winters about inclusivity and diversity in polyamorous and sex positive culture, consent as care, and the intersection of activism and erotic liberation. In 2014, the San Francisco Chronicle named William Winters the "de facto king of the East Bay polyamory scene." He's been working to earn the title ever since. An activist, educator, and intimacy coach, William is the founder and co-producer of Bonobo Network, an Oakland-based organization that brings together folks who understand that monogamy isn't right for everyone and that pleasure comes in many different packages to become more sexually informed, liberated, consensual, communicative, kind, and inclusive so that we can all get the pleasure, connection, and understanding we deserve. William has also been an advocate for polyamory in the media, appearing in San Francisco Magazine, KQED's Forum, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the New York Times. He has facilitated conversations about polyamory and sex-positive culture in settings including university campuses, political conferences, living rooms, Burning Man, and beyond. A campaign strategist by profession, a culture nerd by avocation, and a philosopher by major, William lives with his wife and their stupid cat in Oakland, CA. Welcome. We are reporters and editors with decades of journalism experience between us. Levi Sumagaysay spent most of her career at the San Jose Mercury News and has specialized in technology news. Pati Navalta is editor in chief at San Francisco Magazine and has been a demographics editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, among other places. As longtime storytellers, we know we are in the middle of one of the biggest stories of our lives. Race and Coronavirus is a newsletter and podcast that will address something close to our hearts: tracking the effects of this pandemic on minorities and immigrants. Because even though we keep hearing that COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate, we also know that in the United States, black and brown people are being disproportionately affected on many different levels. So we’ll tell that story -- and more. We’ll explore how minorities are on the front lines because so many of them are service workers. We’ll discuss the effects on immigrants. We will talk about the inherent biases in this nation’s economic, educational and cultural systems and how they play into why many minorities were already worse off, and why this crisis exacerbates those disadvantages. We will talk to real people who are feeling these effects, plus academics, economists, advocates, policy-makers and celebrities who can lend their expertise and use their voices to call attention to these issues. We will report and curate news, and share our own thoughts and experiences. We will tackle the cold, hard truths about this crisis but also point to ways people are helping one another. We will provide context and cite history in hopes that we can foster a valuable conversation. We hope you’ll join us. Please subscribe, and recommend our weekly newsletter and podcast to others. Famous chefs don’t become known because of their humility. But as it turns out, their restaurants might. In this episode of the podcast, I spoke with renowned chef Peter Merriman about his unique approach to hospitality in his restaurants. Why is it that a person always feels welcome when they check-in with his hosts? How does Peter motivate his entire staff to entertain like they are “throwing a party every night,” prepare each and every dish like they are “cooking for their mom,” and consistently go above and beyond to “do the right thing” for every customer they meet? In this episode, we discuss: Why service matters as much (if not more) than the food What are his “vital few” that he focuses on with staff? The key importance of establishing and maintaining relationships How Peter hires right, then gives his people a chance to shine What it means to focus on the “internal customers” How those who are served can get the most out of our experience as customers The importance of sustainability, and connecting with the source of our food How customer demand impacts quality The importance of humility to the success of any restaurant Thanks for listening! Known as the original “locavore”, Peter is a vocal champion of Hawaii’s farmers, ranchers and fishermen. His restaurants showcase island grown and harvested foods through simple preparations that reflect the myriad flavors of Hawaii’s multiculturalism. Dubbed the “Pied Piper of Hawaii Regional Cuisine” by The Los Angeles Times, he is a continuing inspiration to Hawaii’s thriving culinary scene. Early Years Peter was raised in Pittsburgh, where a passion for food was instilled in him from a young age. His mother, Woodene, was a noted Pittsburgh Post Gazette food writer, and by the time he was 16, he was doing “grunt work” for Master Chef Ferdinand Metz at the H. J. Heinz Co. (Chef Metz later headed the renowned Culinary Institute of America.) Pursuing the opportunity to play football, Peter attended The University of Pennsylvania and studied Political Science. After graduation, Merriman enrolled in a three-year Chef's Apprentice Program with RockResorts under the auspices of the American Culinary Federation. The apprenticeship program took Peter to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and to Woodstock, Vermont, where he studied at the Woodstock Inn, under the supervision of Chef Hans Schadler. He then went on to various stints in resort areas across the United States and Europe, including a summer working among the vineyards of France’s Champagne region. In early 1983, Peter was hired as a cook for the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. He arrived in Hawaii with one suitcase and $75 in his pocket thinking he would stay a few months at the most. But he fell in love with the natural beauty of the islands and the rich culture of the people who live there. In 1985, only two years after his arrival, he was appointed Executive Chef of the Mauna Lani Resort’s new Gallery Restaurant. Chef & Pioneer of Hawaii Regional Cuisine At his interview for the chef position at The Gallery Restaurant, Peter was asked what type of food he wanted to feature. Without thinking, he said “regional cuisine” and went on to explain how no other restaurants were serving the local fish and produce. Peter believed that to be able to offer fish that was caught the same morning and to use vegetables harvested the day that they were served was essential to providing the best gourmet Hawaii cuisine. When Peter got the job, he had to deliver on the concept, but quickly discovered there were almost no local products available. Peter advertised in the newspapers and went out to the farms, ranches and docks to let local producers know he wanted whatever they had. “We’re in this together,” he told them, “If you grow it or catch it, I’ll buy it, and we all succeed.” Pretty soon he had built solid partnerships and local producers would try to get or grow whatever he needed. As he began recruiting other chefs to focus on local foods, “Hawaii Regional Cuisine” was born with Peter as founding president. Peter says it was just the right thing to do. “We were able to serve the freshest, most flavorful food at the restaurant. The bonus is that it benefits the local economy while helping to preserve the land and the agrarian way of life. Merriman’s Restaurants In 1988, Peter opened his signature upcountry restaurant, Merriman’s, in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. He was proclaimed, "A gourmet in cowboy country" by Hana Hou!, the Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines. The New York Times raved “Everything at Merriman’s…features the freshest local ingredients paired in exciting ways,” and San Francisco Magazine exclaimed “His Wok-charred Ahi is to die for!” It was at Merriman’s Waimea that Peter garnered the attention of the James Beard Foundation and as a result, he was a Finalist in the “Best Chef Northwest & Hawaii” category three distinct times. In 1994, Peter partnered with TS Restaurants to open Hula Grill on Maui’s famed Ka`anapali Beach. Hula Grill, touted “the best fish house in the islands” by Honolulu Magazine, brought the concepts of Hawaii Regional Cuisine to a beachside setting. Two more fine dining restaurants were added to the Merriman’s Hawaii group in 2008 and 2009 - Merriman’s Kapalua, on the grounds of the scenic resort on Maui’s West Side, and Merriman’s Fish House in Poipu, Kauai. Downstairs from the fish house, Peter offers casual dining at Merriman’s Gourmet Pizza & Burgers. In June 2018, Merriman’s Hawaii Group opened for the first time on Oahu, bringing Merriman’s Kaka’ako to Ward Village by Howard Hughes. In 2011, Peter launched a new venture in casual dining, Handcrafted Restaurants, with restaurateur Bill Terry. Handcrafted Restaurants is a multi-concept restaurant company operating four restaurants across the Hawaiian Islands: Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman in Wailea and Ka’anapali, Maui and Ko Olina Oahu, Moku Kitchen in Kaka’ako, Oahu, and the Beach House in Poipu, Kauai.

Leo Sens is an outgoing 12-year-old boy with lots of interests. He's a musician and photographer. He likes automobiles, and he's comfortable giving his opinion as a car reviewer. When his parents were shopping for a new car, Sens was in the back seat. Visiting car dealerships to purchase a vehicle isn't often anyone's favorite thing to do. But the younger Sens, who lives with an older sister and his parents in Oakland, California, was into it. A 2017 Audi A3 e-tron similar to the car reviewed by 12-year-old Leo Sens of Oakland, California. While his parents were in the front seat, he thought they needed the perspective of someone sitting in the back seat, a 12-year-old car reviewer. Thus, Backseat Driver, comprised of two YouTube videos, was born. Backseat Driver isn't a novel name, but it likely is unique as the name of the auto reviews created by a grade school boy. Leo Sens is our guest on Episode 49 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich was on assignment, so I interviewed Leo while he was with his family in a rental car and driving near Washington, D.C. We discussed his favorite cars, the pros and cons of the car his parents purchased and the making of his YouTube videos. Josh Sens, Leo's father, is a restaurant critic for San Francisco Magazine and a writer for Golf Magazine. I met Josh for the first time last month during a media day in advance of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula. Says the elder Sens about his son, the car reviewer: “The idea came about when my wife and I were looking for a new car. We test drove a bunch with him in the back seat and he was very opinionated about them all. He kept saying that parents don't think about how cars drive for their kids. “He's only done a couple of episodes but has written directed and edited them himself. He wants to do more but is also busy with guitar and a million things that kids waste time on.” Leo reiterated his father's thoughts. He said he plans to do additional car reviews when he has more time. Here's his review of his parents' car, a 2017 Audi A3 e-Tron. We welcome your comments and episode suggestions. "They always leave when it gets hot in the cafe." —Man counter-protesting protestors About: Since the turn of the millennium, the percentage of U.S.-based specialty coffee drinking folk, like those who have a cup everyday, has quadrupled. Travel to any major or minor city in the country, and you’ll see an offering of coffees that transcends the uniform Starbucks experience that’s on every block. But the image that reflects after you place a mirror in front of any craft coffee company or cafe is a bit more clear, albeit unsettling. Stare at it long enough and you’ll come across matters like gentrification, the rise of the millennial-inspired yuppie wave and the old act of global economics, power dynamics and capitalism all at play. This podcast episode explores the intricacies of coffee and attempts to answer two simple questions about one very complex drink. What makes specialty coffee special and who is it really for? The relationship between chefs and critics has been a hot topic this year and this week, San Francisco Magazine's Rebecca Flint Marx took an unsparing look at Michael Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle and whether or not his boyfriend Michael Murphy's business interests represent a conflict of interest. We talk with Rebecca about the piece and its fallout, or curious lack thereof. Then, on an otherwise quiet summer news week, we kick back and talk chefs and fishing with Harold Dieterle, and catch up with Harold on his current business endeavors.

Leah Rose talks to Chris Colin about his story “The Eden of Weed” from San Francisco Magazine's April 2016 issue. In his story Chris gets high and takes a trip to the Solar Living Center in Mendocino county, California. The Solar Living Center is an ecological-Epcot Center that was created by an enterprising environmentalist named John Schaeffer whose been at the forefront of the back-to-the-land movement since the 1970s. Last year Schaeffer updated the Solar Living Center by building a marijuana dispensary on the grounds. The dispensary is an added attraction to the Center whose renewable energy and permaculture exhibits attract 150,000 people per year. But with the pending legalization of recreational pot in California, the Solar Living Center could soon welcome busloads of weed-happy tourists. It's a new era for Mendocino County which, as Chris writes, may soon become the Nappy Valley for weed.

Show #86 Hour 1 | Guest: Diana Kapp, journalist | Show Summary: The city of Palo Alto and the Gunn High School administration are slowly opening up about teen suicides. Questions about the first cluster, in 2009-10, met a wall of silence. But as the school saw more suicides, families and authorities began to open up. In her new article for San Francisco Magazine, Diane Kapp interviews students, adolescent depression experts, and bereaved families to piece together why the phenomenon continues.
Diana Kapp's story from the June issue of San Francisco Magazine focuses on two recent clusters of suicides among high school kids in Palo Alto, a largely affluent city that many believe encourages a culture of fierce competition and stifling academic pressure. Diana investigates why eight teenagers over the past 5 years have killed themselves and tries to pin down the various theories as to why. Some people believe suicide can become a trend, and a way to gain distinction in a cut throat environment, while others believe widespread depression and the drive for personal excellence over self care and awareness may be the cause.
Andrew Leonard talks about his new article for San Francisco Magazine, "Long Live The Empress"; keeping memories of Chinatown alive and kicking; Local author Peter Orner's Book Report, and local band Corner Laughers.
Host Leah Rose sits with Andrew Leonard to discuss his piece "Long Live the Empress" from the April 2015 issue of San Francisco Magazine. Andrew's story takes a look at how the closure of an iconic Chinese restaurant and banquet hall called the Empress of China may be a sign that San Francisco's Chinatown is on the brink of serious social and cultural change.
Host Leah Rose sits with writer Robin Rinaldi to discuss her personal essay, "Love in the Time of Plethora" from the February 2015 issue of San Francisco Magazine. Robin's essay explores her time spent living in San Francisco where she ended her marriage, lived in an orgasmic commune, and eventually found the passion she longed for.
San Francisco Magazine's executive editor Gary Kamiya sits with host Leah Rose to discuss his new piece "The Outsiders" from the March issue of San Francisco Magazine. Gary's story looks at homelessness in San Francisco, a 30 year-old problem that he says has been both chronic and humiliating. Homeless people have become signifiers of the city by the bay along with the Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars. “The Outsiders” examines how we often treat homeless people and what the city of San Francisco is doing to find innovative ways to provide resources to those who need it most.
Host Leah Rose talks with Julia Scott to talk about her article "Poly Love" from the February 2015 issue of San Francisco Magazine. Julia's article looks at the group dynamics of polyamorous relationships and profiles married couples who manage to openly maintain relationships with outside partners, as well as people who are committed to multiple people at the same time. As if keeping up with one partner wasn't hard enough, you can imagine, polyamorous relationships can get a little messy. Their three biggest pitfalls, Julia points out, are jealousy, time management, and lack of clarity. And while it may seem like poly people are just swingers in disguise, Julia found that many of the relationships are often more cerebral than sexy.
Bobby began his distinguished career working in restaurants in Arizona until he moved to Colorado in 1995 to join the staff of The Little Nell restaurant in Aspen as a sommelier. During his five-year tenure, the restaurant received numerous awards for wine and service, including the Gourmet’s “Best Wine Service” Award, Mobile Travel Guide’s Five Star Hotel and Restaurant Rating, Wine Spectator’s Grand Award, and a nomination from The James Beard Foundation for “Best Wine Service”. In 2000, Bobby joined world-renowned chef Thomas Keller at The French Laundry in Yountville, California. Within his first year, Bobby received The James Beard Foundation’s “Outstanding Wine Service” Award and San Francisco Magazine recognized him as “Wine Director of the Year”. He also met his future business partner, chef de partie Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson. Before leaving The French Laundry in May 2003, the restaurant received The James Beard Foundation’s award for “Outstanding Restaurant Service”. In their pursuit and vision of opening a neighborhood restaurant reminiscent of the Frascas they had visited in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, Lachlan and Bobby opened their restaurant, Frasca Food and Wine, in August of 2004 in Boulder, CO. Having researched and traveled throughout Italy many times, both were deeply inspired by this region in particular — the international influences of its cuisine, the profusion of local ingredients in its rustic yet elegant dishes, its passionate relationship between food and wine, and the gracious hospitality of the locals. Bobby earned the Master Sommelier Diploma from the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2004. This diploma is considered by many the ultimate professional credential in the wine and spirits services industry. In 2008, Bobby was nominated by the James Beard Foundation for the “Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional” Award and in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 was nominated again for “Outstanding Wine Service in America”. In May of 2013, was given the award. These prestigious distinctions notwithstanding, Bobby walks the dining room nightly, enthusiastically dispensing advice, recommendations, and sharing his passion for wine with Frasca guests. Tune-in to this week’s program to learn more about how Bobby excels in customer service within his restaurants, and is able to bring the amazing flavors of wines from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region to life. This program has been sponsored by S. Wallace Edwards & Sons. Thanks to The California Honeydrops for today’s music. “Anybody that works at The French Laundry – you take a lot from that experience.” [8:30] “There is no other place for a wine person that is so special, than Friuli-Venezia Giulia.” [28:10] — Bobby Stuckey on In the Drink
