In this heartfelt episode Jeremy shares how his deep dive into Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and spiritual practice transformed his life, offering insights into the power of letting go, embracing grace, and finding bliss through consistent practice. From navigating the awkward stages of yoga to exploring profound concepts like rigorous honesty, the role of pain as a motivator, and even touching on his fascination with UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena), Jeremy's story is one of resilience, curiosity, and awakening. Join us for a rich conversation about yoga, recovery, and the human quest for truth, culminating in a beautiful quote from Nisargadatta Maharaj that captures the essence of the spiritual path: "Wisdom is knowing I am nothing, love is knowing I am everything; and between the two my life moves." --Jeremy York is a student of "the Holy Science of Yoga" who lives, works, and practices at the Satchidananda Ashram-Yogaville. As a spiritual seeker, he has been blessed to have found the dynamic and demanding practice of Ashtanga Yoga, as well as the subtle and sublime practice of Kriya Yoga. As the Hatha Yoga Pradipika tells us, “No success in Raja Yoga without Hatha Yoga, and no success in Hatha Yoga without Raja Yoga. One should therefore practice both of these well, till complete success is gained.” Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

John has been a student of Yoga, of AVY since 1987, though during retrospective reverie, john realises that much of his early years at school where spent daydreaming – “eyes fixed out through the window as if travelling to another dimension of reality..” When does one start yoga? John questions and believes that once you start to question where are you, where have you come from, what are you, what are you doing and where are you going? when these questions percolate and bubble to the surface, you become aware you are already on the Journey of enquiry, the enquiry into your true nature and purpose for being here on this physical plan. It is through the practice of AVY and deep enquiry into the self that John has brought all his earlier experiences and meditations into his life work of sharing. John's teaching is therefore very metaphorical, analytical, technical and often humorous, his teaching style appeals to students of many backgrounds and nationalities, teaching workshops throughout the world. John remains an avid student of yoga and relationship fascinated by the linking of different traditions and cultures through symbols, language and the Counted Method of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. John's wishes to acknowledge his first teacher Derek with great love and gratitude, Derek Ireland who introduced John to K Pattabhi Jois, John's root teacher, connecting him to the source.

She began her study of yoga at the age of 18 while attending the University of Massachusetts. From her first class, she knew she had found something special and deeply familiar. While she began to practice yoga on a purely physical plane and because it felt good, it became apparent some years later that there was more to Yoga than she originally thought. In 1991, Nicki traveled to Mysore, India to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the master of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. She fell in love with the practice and continued her studies with Pattabhi Jois until his death in 2009. What she experienced on that first trip was a radical realization that yoga is much more than a physical practice. The yoga affected her deeply on an emotional and spiritual level. After that she was hooked! As she delved deeper into the Ashtanga practice she became curious about her teacher's teacher and his lineage. She learned that Tirumalai Krishnamacharya had been Pattabhi Jois' teacher and also the teacher of BKS Iyengar. This led her to study Iyengar Yoga with Mr. Iyengar, his children and with many of his senior teachers as well including Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden, at his institute in Pune, India. Nicki has always believed that her practice continued to grow and evolve due to her study and practice of both of these systems of Yoga. Nicki continues to study to study yoga with senior teachers and believes that a great teacher must always remain a dedicated student. Nicki's teaching has grown out of her practice and her deep faith in yoga and she chooses to honor her students as individuals first and foremost. Nicki's style combines asana, pranayama, philosophy, and poetry and her classes are strong and accessible to everyone. Nicki uses humor in her teaching to set her students at ease and she is considered to be very relatable and down to earth. She is known as a Teacher's teacher and loves igniting the spark of yoga in her students. Nicki lives on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii, where she owns and directs the Maya Yoga Studio on the North Shore of Maui. She has been featured in numerous articles and has graced the cover of Yoga Journal magazine. She is featured in 2 Ashtanga Yoga videos available through Gaiam and in 9 videos entitled Maya Yoga Vinyasa on her youtube channel. She is currently finishing a book on Yoga for beginners. Nicki teaches workshops and teacher training courses at her studio on Maui and travels all over the world conducting workshops, teacher trainings, and retreats.

He discovered Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga in 1991 with Sri K Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. He spent 8 years traveling to Mysore spending 4 – 6 months per visit to learn more of the system, then going off to some other exotic location to practice daily what Guruji had taught him. Gérald was taught up to the third series and was one of the first French students to have been personally authorized to teach by Sri K Pattabhi Jois.  In addition to his Ashtanga practice, Gérald continues to cultivate a meditation practice in the tradition of Kriya Yoga. He has a daily pranayama practice and has been certified to teach kriya and pranayama by his teacher, Sri O.P. Tiwari. LINDA MUNRO Linda took her first yoga class in 1995 in Toronto, Canada with Ron Reid. But a couple of months later she was in a fairly serious car accident and had to have physical therapy. This is when she decided to use the yoga as a way to compliment the therapy. Soon after she realized that the yoga would be a life time practice. A practice of asana, pranayama and meditation but also a practice of being truthful, a practice of being kind, a practice of being fearless, peaceful and happy. She believes that the practice of “yoga” is continuous; the practice does not stop when you roll up the yoga mat. The practice of yoga includes the way you live your life, the way you relate to your family, friends, co-workers and to the strangers on the street. This is the life long practice of developing yogic awareness. In 1997 she moved to New York City with her work in the fashion business while continuing a daily ashtanga practice studying under Eddie Stern. The year 2000 brought her to Paris, France. After thirteen years in the world of fashion she decided it was the time to move fully into the direction she had been moving since her first yoga class. She studied yogic scriptures and philosophy, having completed a 250 hour study program of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, and a 120 hour course on the Bhagavad Gita under the supervision of Georg Feuerstein. She was one of his 10 mentoring students until he passed away in 2012. Linda is also a student of Sri O.P. Tiwari and is certified by him to teach pranayama. As well she has completed the anatomy for yoga training with Leslie Kaminoff and is a junior yoga anatomy trainer. Not to mention she has studied with the late guru of Ashtanga Yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India and NYC. In 2019, Linda and Gerald opened Ashtanga Yoga Golfe Juan, a new location to share their precise teaching of yoga on the Côte d'Azur, in the south of France, their new home.

Norman E. Sjoman is the author of the 1996 book The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace. The book contains an English translation of the yoga section of Sritattvanidhi, a 19th-century treatise by the Maharaja of Mysore. It contributes an original view on the history and development of the teaching traditions behind modern asanas. According to Sjoman, a majority of the tradition of teaching yoga as exercise spread primarily through the teachings of BKS Iyenger and his students. He claims this “appears to be distinct from the philosophical or textual tradition of hatha yoga. In addition, it does not appear to have any basis as a genuine tradition as there is no textual support for the asanas taught and no lineage of teachers." Sjoman studied at the University of British Columbia and Stockholm University before obtaining a PhD from the Centre of Advanced Studies in Sanskirt at Pune University. In addition, he holds a pandit degree from the Mysore Maharaja's Mahapathasala. Sjoman spent 14 years in India studying four different shastras n Sanskrit, with several pandits. In the mid 1980s, while doing research at the Mysore Palace, Sjoman made copies of the yoga section of the Sritattvanidhi. This was a "colossal" illustrated compendium, authored in the 19th century by the then Maharaja. The book included diagrams of 122 yoga asanas. Unlike the few other known historical yoga treatises, the emphasis was solely on the physical activity. Some appeared based on Indian wrestling and other gymnastic exercises. In that aspect more closely resembling modern yoga as exercise forms such as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Both B. K. S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, who are major influences on modern yoga forms, themselves studied under teacher Tirumalai Krishnamacharya at the Mysore Palace in the 1930s. Sjoman discovered that the royal family, in the early 1900s, had employed a British gymnast to train the young princes. When Krishnamacharya arrived in the 1920s to start a yoga school, his schoolroom was the former gymnasium complete with ropes. Sjoman argues that several exercises detailed in a purposely written western gymnastics manual were incorporated into Krishnamacharya's syllabus, resulting in his vinyasa style, and further passed on to Iyengar and Jois. The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace was published in 1996 including the 122 asana illustrations and extracts from the gymnastics manual. Naturally, the radical, perhaps heretical, idea that some of the practice of modern yoga as exercise is based on something as mundane as British gymnastics caused a stir in the yoga world.

Abrazo. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/veka/message

If you ever wondered how gods are made, our guest today will tell you they start out as heroes. They become big enough to thrust out at Brad Pitt and decide the fate of thousands of women and children. Hector must have been like that… a giant like Priapus or Goliath standing in the way of Achilles. Probably a good sized lad. Maybe even 6 foot 4 and full of muscles. Our guest today is very much like this. She is larger than life and it makes sense that she married a Golden God like Derek Ireland and bore him two children. They used to make statues of people like them (think Venus de Milo). These two took a heroes journey that the rest of us just read about or gaze at in museums. Kristina Karitinou sits with us today and talks about her epic life story, including her true romance with Derek Ireland, nursing him through cancer, and her subsequent depression upon his death. The pain of this event along with their two small children, shaped the rest of her journey. Is there one of us in the Ashtanga Yoga culture more wrapped into the fabric of this legendary tapestry? Derek looms larger than life. He who practiced in Mysore, India wearing body, ankle, and wrist weights; he who ran up and down Chamundi Hill every morning like Lester Dent's “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze!” (Russell's wouldn't have been surprised at all to find Doc Savage practicing Ashtanga Yoga next to Derek and Kristina in a cave on the island of Crete, recovering from some epic adventure). The Ashtanga yoga practice is a method that brings the maximum beauty to both the male and female body. - Kristina Karitinou Kristina is an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and Zen practitioner from Athens, Greece, who's been teaching in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since 1991. She was qualified as an Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher by her late husband Derek Ireland, authorized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and Certified by his son, Manju Pattabhi Jois in 2012. After many years of assisting Derek Ireland around the world, Kristina became one of the first Ashtanga yoga teachers in Europe. David Keil was introduced to yoga in 1989 by his Tai Chi Chuan teacher. From 1999 to 2003 David was an instructor of Kinesiology (the study of movement and musculoskeletal anatomy) at Miami’s Educating Hands School of Massage where he developed a fun, informal and informative style of teaching. As he taught incoming students with no prior understanding of anatomy, David was confronted with the problem of making such a complex and beautiful system accessible and understandable to the average person. In 1999 he was introduced to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It was in 2001 whilst presenting his anatomy workshops for the first time overseas in Penzance, UK that he first met John Scott. Two weeks practicing with John was transformational and he realized that he had found his teacher. This began a relationship of both teacher/student as well as a collaborative colleague relationship that continues today. John advised David to go to Mysore, India the following year, which he did. David arrived in Mysore in 2002 where he studied with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the “old” shala. In fact, it was the last year that the old shala was used for practice. David was authorized in 2004 and returned yearly for extended visits to Mysore with his wife Gretchen Suarez. They are both Authorized Level 2

I'm often asked "How I got into Yoga?" or "Why did I start doing Yoga?". There isn't really a short answer to either of these questions, believe me, I've tried. What I did learn after plenty of time reflecting was that my introduction into Yoga and subsequent journey with Yoga manifested itself through a complex series of events and circumstances. Each one played its own special part in guiding me on my path that ultimately led me to Yoga and kept me coming back for more, and more, and eventually catapulting me to Mysore, India to pursue my 200 hour YTT certification in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. And most recently opening up my own Yoga Studio, A New Breath in Liberty, NY. Looking back now, I'm still in complete awe about how everything lined up the way it did. It all happened the way it was supposed to in order to bring me to where I am today. I don't know how to really define it. Magic? Divine timing? Maybe it's both and maybe it's also this beautiful thing we call life. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Thread of Yoga Revealed   Namaste, Yoga practitioners! Thank you for checking out the Yoga Revealed Podcast BlogPost! Today we hear from an amazing individual, Richard Freeman, who has been practicing yoga since 1968. This is Alec Vishal Rouben and it is truly an honor to share this interview with you. Let’s share the story of how this interview unfolded…  My personal yoga journey began at CorePower Yoga, in the heat, trying to understand my body, habitual patterns of my mind, and life itself. In my first few years of practice, I was a go getter for the asana! A few years would pass and I became more thirsty for the depth that Yoga held. So, I began practicing at the Yoga Workshop in Boulder, Colorado, under the guidance of Ty Landrum, Richards Senior student, and Mary Taylor, Richards Wife. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, as taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois; GuruJi developed the primary series and five other advancing series for practitioners to move through, building tapas (discipline) and a cultivation of devotion. One year at the workshop would pass and I would be accepted into Richard Freeman’s Teachers Intensive in July of 2015. This was a huge honor and it was sure intense! I had taken Richards class a few times before, but this was on another level of cultivating a genuine Student-Teacher Relationship. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to study with Richard and Mary. I had manifested an authentic teacher, dedicated to the path. (Check back NEXT thursday for an interview with Mary Taylor!) If you have ever taken Richards class, you know how mindful, articulate, and slow paced the movements and breath patterns are. Leaving out the heat, mirrors, and music; distraction is brought down, creating more observation for the vrittis (thoughts) to pass through without attaching.  It was a chilly Boulder afternoon when I arrived to Richard Freeman’s home. I pulled up with a sense of comfortable nervousness. To Interview a Master teacher…an incredible blessing and honor it is. Richard opened the screen door and out came his 13 year old dog, Ruby, who needed help to climb the stairs. Richard and I later discussed how beautiful it is to recognize yourself within animals, sometimes easier than it is to do so within other humans. Richard takes me upstairs to his practice room and I lay down my laptop and recording device upon his extra long Manduka yoga mat, where two old style blankets rest, one for me, and one for Richard. He passes me a cup of water in a Stainless Steel cup. These cups shine with presence.I say, “These remind me of my Nani’s cups! They were from India.”Richard responds, “ These are from India. ~Richards long pause~ Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar have sipped from this same cup.” I contained my excitement as my I sipped from the steel cup, almost as if I was taking in sweet nectar. Amrita. And so we began. I interviewed Richard Freeman, Soaking up an hour of embodied wisdom as he has studied and enveloped himself in this way of life, in a mindfulness practice that dives far beyond the single facet of asana. Richard has been different from the beginning, he shares. You could consider Richard a Black Sheep in the Ashtanga Community. However, we won’t tell anyone that he uses props; keeping the postures a little more tailored to the individual. Listen to this podcast to hear from a true student in the practice, an example for us all to continue our studies, no matter if we teach or not. Plus, you will get a few tips for the natural experience of plateauing in Yoga. There is so much golden wisdom within this podcast and it is such a joy to share this with you. I encourage you to find a local Ashtanga Studio and give Mysore style practice a try (self-guided primary series…. use the cheat sheet for the poses!). One of the tips Richard offers is for individuals to try new studios and styles!  Richard Freeman and his wife, Mary Taylor are releasing a book in November of 2016, titled the Art Of Vinyasa. Look out for that! You can PREorder their new book here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1611802792?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00Visit The Yogaworkshop.com and try to catch Richard as he travels the world teaching Yoga. It’s beautiful how YOGA RUINS YOUR LIFE! :)  My name is Alec Vishal Rouben and it is an honor to mirror the wisdom of yoga back to you. Thank you for tuning in!
