Ken welcomes Ed Oxford, key researcher and contributor to the film 1946 - The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture. Ed, who identifies as a gay Christian, graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Talbot Theological Seminary in New Testament. In the years that followed, his study of the original languages and the many English translations of the Christian scriptures brought him to the undeniable conclusion that the “Bible has been weaponized against the LGBTQ+ community.” A case in point is a passage from I Corinthians in which the 1946 Revised Standard Version (RSV) erroneously translated a Greek word, introducing the term “homosexual” to the Bible for the very first time. The film's trailer begins with Rev. John MacArthur quoting from his pulpit, “Neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals shall inherit the Kingdom of God.”Along with colleague Kathy Baldock, Ed won access to the archives at Yale University. He and Kathey explored the source materials: the translator's notes and records used to produce the New Testament. In the original documents, they uncovered the debate over this word choice and finally the admission of the error. The revised RSV changed the word in 1974. But too late. Subsequent translations repeat the error: e.g. The Living Bible (promoted by Billy Graham), the New American Standard Bible (NASB), and most recently, the English Standard Version (ESV - promoted by John MacArthur). Homosexuality became synonymous with “perversion” - and weaponized. Ed shares his personal experience as a gay man in the evangelical church that includes reparative therapy and finally the story of his involvement in the film - a timely and important corrective. “I'm afraid I'm going to hell because I'm not attracted to men. Please give me an unbiased interpretation of Romans 1.” We received this question from a young woman, M.V. This podcast was created by one of Google's newest AI engines, NotebookLM. (https://notebookLM.google.com) We gave NotebookLM M.V.'s question and these six quotes: 1. Justin Lee, from the book: “Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate”: “Paul's writings in Romans 1 are about people who turned away from God and engaged in lustful, excessive behaviors. This is different from a loving, committed same-sex relationship.” 2. Janet Edmonds who I have quoted frequently in this series, says in part: “The behavior Paul (…author of the book of Romans…) was addressing here is explicitly associated with idol worship (probably temple prostitution…' “In the surrounding culture it was common for men of a higher status to take sexual advantage of male slaves or male prostitutes…” “The laws at the time in Rome allowed a master to demand sexual services from any slave, male or female” “Paul was not talking about homosexuality and didn't have in mind specifically prohibiting consensual same-sex relationships.” 3. Matthew Vines, in his book “God and the Gay Christian”: says “Paul's references to ‘unnatural' relations in Romans 1:26-27 are often misunderstood. He was addressing specific cultural practices of his time, not committed, loving same-sex relationships as we understand them today.” 4. Rev. Dr. Mel White, Book: “What the Bible Says—and Doesn't Say—about Homosexuality”: “Romans 1:26-27 must be read in the context of the entire chapter, which condemns idolatry and excessive lust, not loving same-sex relationships.” 5. Kathy Baldock, in her book “Walking the Bridgeless Canyon”: “Paul's use of ‘natural' and ‘unnatural' in Romans 1 reflects the cultural norms of his time, not a universal condemnation of same-sex relationships.” 6. James Brownson, “Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church's Debate on Same-Sex Relationships”: “Romans 1, 26 and 27 addresses behaviors that were seen as dishonorable and excessive, not the loving, committed relationships we see today.” For more information about NotebookLM: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0LMPb9JJnosPj8SPVRSF9z?si=rrOjkTrAR0eGO0Otrv5zfg&t=1466&context=spotify%3Ashow%3A44fllCS2FTFr2x2kjP9xeT

In this episode, we share our thoughts on the 1946 documentary, which tells the story of how the word “homosexuality” did not appear in an English Bible until the 1946 Revised Standard Version. With the help of researchers Kathy Baldock (incredible ally!!!) and Ed Oxford, director Rocky Roggio shows how the translation team took two words in Greek and mistakenly translated them to “homosexuality,” and this choice greatly impacted future Bibles and theologies. We talk about how we appreciated Rev. David Fearon's courageous journey of questioning the translation committee's decision and writing to them about it, and coming out later in life when Kathy befriended him (it is never too late!). We are so grateful for the work that everyone in this project put into it, and we think that its storytelling and reliable data has the power to change lives and families for the better. Tina Wood grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and went to college at Boston University. In her adopted home state of Rhode Island, she was involved in successful efforts to pass several pieces of pro-LGBTQ state legislation over the years, and also runs the email list for LGBTQ news from Rhode Island. She has volunteered as a "search angel" who helps adoptees, birth families, and others who are searching for family and friends over the past several years. In 2018, at request of Kathy Baldock and Ed Oxford, she was able to find Reverend David Sheldon Fearon, who had written a series of letters challenging the translation team of the Revised Standard Version on their usage of the word "homosexual." Reverend Fearon's letters are discussed in the upcoming documentary "1946: The Movie," and Kathy Baldock's upcoming book "Forging a Sacred Weapon: How the Bible Became Anti-Gay." In today's episode, Tina goes into detail how she found, the Reverend David Fearon, the seminarian who challenged the translation in the RSV Bible in regards to the use of the word homosexual. She talks about the movie, 1946 and how that was the year that the mistranslated word, homosexual, was added to the bible for the first time and has been responsible for religious trauma, abuse, and affected the mental health and lives of many queer people who have completed suicide attempts because of the mental anguish due to societal bigotry and religious pressures for us to live inauthentically. In this episode, we discuss the sacred cow of the Bible. We discuss the findings of the newly released 1946 documentary by Rocky Roggio and Kathy Baldock, and how it led me to deeper study of the origins of the stories in the Bible. And of course, I give you tips on how to ask constructive questions of the Bible from an academic standpoint.
What is the best, most-Christ-like way to respond to your child when they come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered? As evangelicals we've been taught to believe that love and judgement go hand in hand and to love the sinner but hate the sin. This kind of theology is incredibly dangerous. On today's episode, Ashley walks evangelical parents through the coming out process, unpacking distorted beliefs around sin and gender. She also gives listeners 5 ways to help process the coming out experience that provide parents with a healthy way to learn and grow. This episode is dedicated to the evangelical parent. Ashley mentions a podcast episode on Will and Grace as well as PFLAG, a resource for parents of lesbian and gay children. Did you know the word “homosexual” didn't appear in the Bible until 1946? Neither did we. And neither did Kathy Baldock until a gay friend said, “Even God doesn't love me,” and Kathy, a heterosexual, practicing Christian, went looking for answers. Today, Kathy is an author (Walking The Bridgeless Canyon), LGBTQ advocate, international speaker and educator. She has done more research than almost anyone in the world on the origins of Christianity's discrimination against the LGBTQ community. She joins Sabrina to discuss:• How two words became combined and mistranslated to “homosexual” in the 1946 Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible • The ways in which the Church's relationship to the LGBTQ community has evolved• How an antiquated understanding of procreation, among other things, led to gender discrimination in the ChurchLike what you hear and want more? THE THESIS: In mainstream Christianity, far too many pastors have abandoned the Bible when the Bible doesn't match the world. Christian leaders must stop that practice. But, the Sexual Left has taken a far more devious and clever approach: they are setting up so-called “Christian” churches that worship sin, not God. And, these churches will appeal to young people unless we bet far better at talking about God's love for all and why love and agreement with sinful behaviors are not the same thing. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Holy Sexuality and the Gospel: Sex, Desire, and Relationships Shaped by God's Grand Story Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. A Broken Mother's Search for Hope. THE NEWS & COMMENT: "The 'not yet' is the Christian message that we must embody in critical and creative ways to steward a narrative that calls us into being human with one another again." (“Dr.” Robyn Henderson-Espinoza) Here is how they utterly twist the Holy Bible -- I confront all of these lies in the Podcast LGBTQ+ Theology 101 "What Does the Bible Say About LGBTQ+ People? "Conversations around what the Bible says about LGBTQ+ people can be contentious. Due to the dense nature of this content, you may want to consider studying the additional resources listed under “How can I learn more about the 'Clobber Verses' and LGBTQ+ theology?'. Consider this an introductory overview to these passages, as shared by QCF Board member, Rev. Danny Cortez: Genesis 1 "Genesis 1 (along with other passages that reference this chapter) is often used to argue against nonbinary and transgender identities. It's often stated that since God created man and woman, there can be no other gender categories than male and female. However, as Kathy Baldock wisely stated, 'God created man, woman and intersex.' We see through science and creation that there is biological gender variation in creation. People's biology isn't as binary as we are led to believe, and Scripture speaks of eunuchs, people who lived as neither male nor female. What we can also see in the creation story is that, while God created day and night, that doesn't mean there is nothing in between. Dawn and dusk are expressions of creation that don't fall neatly into the categories of day and night. So when Genesis tells us that God created man and woman, it doesn't mean that we are limited to the two. In this world, there are nonbinary, genderfluid, transgender, and other multi-faceted expressions of the non-gendered image of God within creation. Genesis 2 "Genesis 2 tells the marriage story of Adam and Eve. However, the word “marriage” isn't used. Instead, 'one flesh' is used to describe their covenant relationship. “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). The “one flesh” reference to marriage is repeated twice in the New Testament, first by Jesus when he condemned the practice of men divorcing their wives (Matthew 19:4-6), and also in Ephesians, when Paul talks about marriage: “For we are members of his body. ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:30-31)." In Ephesians, Paul expands the definition of marriage. He uses the language of marriage, the coming together of 'one flesh,' to describe Christ's marriage to the church. Here, Paul no longer limits marriage as something that happens between one man and one woman, but between Christ and the church. We find that marriage is not based on gender, but rather on covenant. Gender difference is therefore not a requirement of marriage. It's not just the Sexual Left, it's governments. The Maine Dept of Education has resources for teachers on their website. This resource is for kindergartners and it discusses the LGBT acronym. For trans, the teacher explains that doctors decide a baby's gender and are sometimes wrong. The official Maine DOE is promoting this. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

That is very obvious. What is your preferred method for making either drink at home? I like a good pour over method or a french press. The only reason I don't make more french press is because of the clean up…. I hate cleaning the french press out. But I know there are other methods out there. (having worked in a coffee roasters retail shop I do know a lot of them.) Do you prefer a cold brew or a hot brew? How do you take you coffee and tea? Black or with “additives” such as cream, sugar, honey, lemon? Of the current drinks out at cafes, what is your current favorite? Also what is your all time favorite at cafes? This doesn't have to be at a big chain store either, one of my favorite drinks is at a local twenty four hour coffeehouse, the drink is called an Irish Carbomb and the café is called Bitter End. This episode dives into the story of Nicodemus and the John 3:16, concepts of being born again, and views from Queer Theology. This coincides for the Gospel lesson of the RCL for May 30, 2021. The two book recommendations mentioned are: Reforming Sodom: Protestants and the Rise of Gay Rights by Heather White and Walking the Bridgeless Canyon: Repairing the Breach Between the Church and the LGBT Community by Kathy Baldock.
Rocky’s work is a ministry to those who have oppressed and harmed by people’s interpretations of the Bible. The documentary traces the steps two scholars took in uncovering the history of how the word homosexual was put into the text nearly 50 years ago and subsequently used as a weapon against the LGBTQ community. This is a powerful and timely story for not just the queer community but all christians that have struggled with what they were taught about the biblical text in terms of sexuality and sin and how to treat others. Rocky recounts how her story ran right into Kathy Baldock and Ed Oxford’s research on the translation team that put the word homosexual in the Bible and the divinity student who wrote the team telling them of their error that he predicted would be very costly on people’s lives. Religion’s relationship with sexuality is precarious to say the least, but does God accept us regardless of our orientation? How about religion? This week, we discuss faith, religion, sexuality and community with Kathy Baldock, an expert on the historical religious discrimination against members of the LGBTQIA+ community. She is the author of “Walking the Bridgeless Canyon: Repairing the Breach Between the Church and the LGBT Community” and founder of Canyonwalker Connections, an organization with a goal of repairing the relationship between the LGBTQIA+ community and the church.
Kathy Baldock is a speaker, educator, mother, and fierce advocate for LGBTQ inclusion in the Church. Her book, "Walking the Bridgeless Canyon" has walked many through the intersecting social, political, and religious history of the treatment of LGBTQ community from antiquity all the way to recent American history. Kathy's been doing a ton of research on bible translations and recently she's found some incredible information that, when this goes mainstream, might blow a lot of minds and misconceptions about how we arrived at the word usage "homosexual" in the bible. Grab some pen and paper cause you're gonna wanna take notes. ... Connect with Kathy across social media @canyonwlkr. And you can pick up her book, "Walking the Bridgeless Canyon" on Amazon and on her website, www.Canyonwalkerconnections.com. ... The current scandal involving Roy Moore is just the latest example of a moral cancer that plagues America. That cancer stems from the blending of Republicans who view themselves as the "true Christians" and "real Americans". It is a pseudo-morality that can be molded to be the antithesis of what it pretends to stand for -- as the recent scandal demonstrates, it can be bastardized to the point where it not only does not represent Christian or American founding principles, it is the exact opposite of both. My journalist panel of Brody Levesque and Dawn Ennis is joined by the renown Kathy Baldock. Kathy Baldock, author, LGBT advocate, and Executive Director of CanyonWalker Connections, is a leading expert on LGBT issues in the United States, especially dealing with historical and current discrimination faced from the socially conservative Christian church and political sector.

Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview Amber Cantorna. Amber was raised evangelical Christian and home schooled. Her father works for Focus on the Family and has for 30+ years. At age 27 she came out to her parents as gay and they disowned her, regarding her as dead—sounds like a practice they borrowed from Sharia Law. Today she is 32, married to her wife, and they both are Christian. Amber’s book, “Refocusing My Family: Coming Out, Being Cast Out, and Discovering the True Love of God” is set to release in early 2017. As an ex-Christian myself, I find that my sense of how comfortable I am being around Christians has a lot to do with the doctrines they personally hold to. It’s been said that Progressive or Liberal Christians have more in common with us atheists than they do with fundamentalist Evangelicals, and I think that’s true. Many of us who have rejected Christianity are able to look back at the damage it did to us. I see many damaging effects of Christian doctrines on society, to name a few: The concept of eternal life diminishes a person’s ability to be present and concerned with reality The concept of reward and punishment in the afterlife inhibits people’s ability to grow up, to think for one’s self, to determine one’s own personal ethics, and contributes to a divisive sectarian view of others, thus enhancing the potential for judgment, superiority, violence and an “us versus them” mentality. In other words, an asshole. Hell forces one to suppress and compartmentalize one’s natural sense of connectedness to all things in order to be okay with human beings being tortured forever. This hardens the heart and numbs one’s innate sense of compassion. It narrows one’s capacity to empathize with all humans by removing empathy from those outside one’s tribe. It promotes in-group loyalty and out-group derogation. The concepts of Heaven and Hell falsely satisfy the innate human need for justice, inoculating one’s ability to acknowledge that, in reality, life is not fair; it is random chaos, and justice rarely happens. This harsh reality is too much for some to bear and they hide under the delusion that God is someday going to right every wrong, further postponing their maturation. To quote Psychologist, Scott McGreal, “…belief in Hell at a national level is probably associated with greater support for retributive policies such as capital punishment and torture, as well as with prejudice against people who violate religious norms such as gays. Aside from being an extremely cruel thing to believe in, the idea of Hell may have done more harm to society than good. So perhaps you can understand why I am apprehensive to build a friendship with a person who believes in Heaven and Hell. They can admire the teachings of Jesus, hold loosely to the Christian doctrines and I find I’m not as suspicious or nervous around them than if I know that deep down they’re okay with a God who tortures those who reject him and trains his followers to be servile, infantile, and void of agency. Not all Christian doctrines are toxic, but some of the most fundamental core tenants are deeply damaging to the individual who buys into them and to the societies where a majority of the population adhere to them. The most violent countries are the most religious, and the least violent countries are the least religious. These jealous god’s abhor the goodness and freedom of humans to find their own path without the aid of a celestial dictator, thus their followers distrust and deny their own innate sense of morality and thereby turn morality on it’s head—calling evil that which natural humans regard as good, and calling good such things as ignorance, stupidity, and servility. Knowing this about Christianity can be the difference in religiously-mixed couples staying together or divorcing. A couple like the Thompsons, featured on episode 111, get along because neither are radical fundamentalists of their own beliefs. This is one reason I like to elevate the agnosticism that all humans share. Certainty, rigidity, and fear are destroyers of relationships. If one or both parties are, as Peter Montoya put it in episode 130, “0% capitulation and 100% capitalization,” then they are at an impasse. Sometimes the Christian accuses their Atheist partner of being intolerant of their Faith, and this may in fact be happening when the atheist attacks their partner’s Christianity on purely judgmental terms, like, “you have to be stupid to believe.” However, if the atheist is positing that the beliefs their Christian partner hold to are immoral and have lowered the character and integrity of that partner, that’s a much more robust argument for establishing irreconcilable differences. Remember, one thing that it’s okay to be intolerant of is intolerance itself. Meaning we’re all free to believe what we want, but if one or both parties deem the other’s beliefs as depreciating the value of the relationship or in fact disgusts one or both of them, then no covenant or promise we made at an altar years ago should lock anyone into a situation that is draining the life out of them. Here again, though, Christianity can foster a lack the agency on the part of the Christian to protect their own pursuit of happiness and oblige them to a higher power to stay in a toxic environment. Not so with the free-thinker. So there’s my thoughts on whether or not I can respect or be friends with a Christian. Rigid, immutable beliefs in toxic ideologies limit, if not eliminate, my desire to spend time with that person. If they believe in a literal Hell or are even hesitant to take a stand on it, that’s a deal-breaker for me. Okay, back to our interview with Amber. Amber is an activist, author and speaker with a heart for people who find themselves at the intersection of their faith and their sexuality. She strives to bridge the gap between two seemingly opposing communities. She has been featured in Huffington Post’s Religion column, as well as on Liberal America and other writing mediums. We taped this conversation on November 21st, 2016. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. This week Richard and Stan talk about election season (surprised?), what made Richard cancel his NYTimes subscription; negligence vs. corruption; ABC and BBC; whether education makes people more liberal (where are all our educated conservatives? seriously—call/write in); Facebook trolling (the saga never ends); the “NPR black republican gay Trump high schooler”; DO I SOUND GAY? (the documentary); codeswitching, gayface, and how Richard hates fashion; how all gay slurs were slurs against women first (even f*gg*t); Kathy Baldock's book Walking the Bridgeless Canyon; how all words come from Greek (and Richard runs to get some Windex); how Stan needs someone to introduce him to Bridget Jones; and then… someone knocks on Richard's door… and we fear he may have been #Taken.
