Cultural Sociologist Rachel Hurdley travels round England and Wales to uncover what walls tell us about how we live, from iron age roundhouses to Victorian mansions, medieval halls to terraced workers' cottages, castles to the domestic interiors of today.Rachel explores how walls, which we often take for granted, define the spaces we inhabit and make sense of everyday life and our place in the world, talking to a range of experts and academics including architectural writer Jonathan Glancey. She tries her hand at making wattle and daub for roundhouses at Castell Henllys in Wales, with archaeologist Dr David Howell . She climbs through the thick stone walls of the Norman castle at Conisbrough in South Yorkshire, with buildings archaeologist James Wright and English Heritage curator Kevin Booth. From the top of the tower, Rachel explores ideas of status and wealth, where building the tallest tower was as much about impressing the neighbours, as it was about military defence and protecting the vast wealth of the aristocratic elite. She also visits St Fagans National Museum of History Wales – a living museum of vernacular buildings throughout the ages. Rachel looks at the way walls have redefined our living spaces from medieval times, such as the longhouses where farmers lived side by side with their animals and the great medieval halls. Here, daily life carried on in one space – masters and servants - until the ruling family was wealthy enough to seek privacy by building first floor solars. Now in modern day Britain, privacy can be at a premium in warehouses and factories converted into rented accommodation to meet to housing demand in sought after areas such as Hackney in London. She also hears stories of horror and superstition – people and animals incarcerated in walls – as well as the use of burn marks at Gainsborough Old Hall in Lincolnshire to keep evil spirits away and visits one of the oldest medieval houses to survive in England, the National Trust's Ightham Mote in Kent, to see centuries of change through its walls with conservation architect Stuart Page and collections manager Amanda Doran, She looks at how fashions and styles have changed with a visit the Museum of the Home where Director Dr Sonia Solicari tells Rachel more about social change through the Museum room sets. Wallpaper was a game changer, a much cheaper alternative to tapestries or rich wall paintings. She hears some surprising facts - the introduction in the 18th century of wallpaper tax, and also how the arsenic in some of the wallpaper pigments was poisoning people. Yet it was the industrial revolution which brought wallpaper and the other mass produced trappings of the home to almost everyone and a chance to curate our spaces - like those of British born Caribbean playwright and artist Michael McMillan, who remembers from his childhood the power of the front room to impress and reveal who we are.Presenter: Rachel Hurdley Producer: Sara Parker Executive Producer: Samir Shah A Juniper production for BBC Radio 4
From the First World War to the Cold War, conflict in the 20th century has been crucial in shaping England as we know it. This is the final episode of Dan's epic adventure, taking him deep inside the famous White Cliffs of Dover with Gavin Wright, into the complex warren of tunnels that became the first line of England's defence in WWII - overlooking the channel for the ships of modern invaders. He discovers how wars on distant frontlines changed life in England, from the very organisation of English society with Dan Todman, to the advent of modern medicine with Tim Cook. He then charts England's course from world wars to the Cold War, learning how the nature of conflict changed and speaking to Julie McDowall about the government's preparations for nuclear armageddon. He ends in York with Kevin Booth, underground once again in what was once a state of the art Cold War nuclear bunker, to look at how technology has changed England and the world.Produced by James Hickmann, Mariana Des Forges, edited and sound design by Dougal Patmore and artwork by Teet Ottin. If you want to get in touch with the podcast, you can email us at ds.hh@historyhit.com, we'd love to hear from you! Josie Long visits York Cold War Bunker, one of over 1,500 bunkers and monitoring posts across the UK that were in operation during the Cold War, and the only example which still exists without alterations today. But perhaps the most interesting thing about the bunker are the people who worked there. Here, the Royal Observer Corps (ROC), mainly civilian volunteers, were trained to receive, record, and relay vital information on nuclear fallout in the event of a real nuclear attack on Britain. Josie meets English Heritage curator, Kevin Booth to find out more about the bunker's history and its role during the Cold War. We hear from Grace Huxford, a senior lecturer in modern history at the University of Bristol, on the history of the Cold War and the social and political context in Britain at the time when the ROC were training in the bunker. Josie also meets Ann Metcalf, a member of the ROC for 27 years who worked at the bunker in York. We hear about her first-hand account of what it was like to train in the bunker, her experience of Cold War Britain, and how it felt to have such a unique and important role, should the very worst have happened. Speaking with Shadows is an English Heritage podcast. This week we're taking a look at how people literally left their mark on history through graffiti. Although we tend to think of graffiti as relatively modern phenomenon, the impulse to scratch, scrawl and draw on walls and buildings is nothing new — and there are plenty of examples at English Heritage sites. Joining us to reveal more are English Heritage's senior curator Kevin Booth and Emma Bryning, who is studying our historic graffiti as part of her PHD at the University of York. To discover the story of the remarkable graffiti left by conscientious objectors at Richmond Castle, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/richmond-castle/richmond-graffiti.

Ukraine Plus Other Wars OngoingThe Jack Blood Show 360 4-14-2022 Ruslan Haiduk and Kevin Booth How do Ukrainians feel about Russians? from our young friend Ruslan Haiduk The world asks Ukrainians to stop hating Russians. They say that Russians are victims of their government. They have been receiving too much propaganda and don't know where the truth is. However, Ukrainians ignore that and still hate Russians. What about me? Do I hate Russians? - I don't know. Read the following statements and decide on your own. Before the war, I had a lot of friends in Russia, close friends. They knew me very well. They knew that I had a wonderful life in Ukraine, I traveled, I studied, I worked, and I was happy. When the war started my friends were worried about me. They phoned and said: “Don't worry we are going to save you. Putin will save Ukraine.” I responded: “We don't need to be saved”. They said that I didn't know the truth, I'd been lied to that I had a beautiful life. When I tried to explain that Russia invaded us, they didn't believe any of my words. When I said that missiles attacked buildings in my city and Russian tanks shot people, they said that it was fake information provided by the Ukrainian government. When I said that I could see everything with my eyes, they said that I just didn't understand the situation. It was hard to hear those words from people I considered to be my friends. Expecting support I received humiliation. That's a short story about how I lost all my Russian friends. That's a story about how even my Russian relatives who visited Ukraine and saw it as a beautiful developing country didn't believe my words. Russians say it's not their war. They are “little” people and can't help it. In 2014 thousands of Ukrainians protested against the Ukrainian government and President Yanukovych. People with sticks and stones fought police with guns. One hundred people died, but we won and changed our government. It was Maidan 2014. Russia is the biggest country in the world with 144 million people, no one would defeat them if they united. But instead, more Russians gathered in Mc Donald's on its last working day than in protests against the war. As I said before, freedom is a choice of people. Russians are slaves of their government and they don't want to change it. Moreover, they want other countries to live the same way. Everyone who says that Russians can't receive the true information is wrong. Most of them know the truth. They are just too weak to admit that they are wrong. They feel that they are totally screwed but they can't accept that it was their country that invaded Ukraine and killed thousands of innocent people. That's why they prefer believing in lies which makes their country a hero. Imagine, 140 countries, hundreds of celebrities, politicians, and almost everyone in the world says that Russia is the occupant. There are a billion proofs. Russians have the same access to the internet as each of us but they don't want to believe it. It is their choice, not the effect of Russian propaganda. Through weeks of the war, Russians started understanding that the world considers them enemies. So Russians try to convince everyone that the war is not their fault and sanctions harm “innocent” people. Well, it's not Putin who kills thousands of Ukrainians. It's 200 000 Russian soldiers who are on Ukrainian land, who have families which let it happen. Moreover, without support from Russians who shout out the power of their fascist sign ”Z”, Putin wouldn't be able to commit that crime in Ukraine for a whole month. This war is the responsibility of every adult Russian who keeps saying: “It's not my war”, “We are little people”, “I am beyond politics”, and “Let the leaders of countries decide”. At first, I also didn't understand why sanctions have to harm Russians. But now it's clear. Without sanctions, they won't change their actions. They have to see that their government commits a crime. Russians proved that the words of celebrities and world leaders are nothing to them. Destroying the Russian economy and showing people what their life will be if they don't take action, will make people start thinking. And one more time: If Russians unite and fight their government, this war will end. Finally, the last thing I want to share with you. One of my Russian friends is a part of the Russian army. He is 18. He started military service in November 2021. Three months before the war had started. I try to keep in touch with him to know more about the situation. He told me that on the 23rd of February the Russian government sent him on training to Crimea, but indeed they sent him to the war. They also gave them documents to sign which they didn't even read. Before starting to defend Russian soldiers you should know that as soon as they entered Ukraine they knew exactly what they were doing. My friend said that they saw innocent people who begged them to leave their land, but still they just blindly obeyed orders. “Destroy that house, bomb a hospital, shoot a car”, they did anything. Good soldiers? No, just cowards. They keep killing people because they are afraid of going to prison for ignoring orders. But my friend is different. I'll tell you why. He had an opportunity to go home because he hadn't finished his military service and it was illegal for him to be in the war. But he decided to stay because the Russian government paid him 300$ a month. That's the price of life for Russian soldiers. I still keep in touch with my friend. However, he's not my friend anymore. Today he phoned me and said that he was alright hiding in occupied villages. As soon as I know that he is heading to attack Ukrainian cities, I'll ask about his location and inform the Ukrainian army. I know that our army will destroy those troops and it will be my fault. You can call me a traitor but I know that I will save the lives of other innocent people and especially children whose deaths hit me the most. Do I hate Russians? - maybe I don't. But I won't be able to forgive them. I won't forgive my Russian friends and relatives who didn't believe my words. I won't forgive Russians for every death of a Ukrainian child which happened because they supported their government or kept silent. I won't forgive my friend who chose money instead of peace. I won't forgive Russians for their words that it was their government, not them. I won't forgive them for every sleepless night I spent worrying about my father and Ukrainian people who hid in shelters. I won't forgive.KEVIN BOOTH:Sacred Cow Productions is a production company founded by filmmaker and author Kevin Booth and the late comedian Bill Hicks. https://sacredcowproductions.com/Shadows of Sofia - Trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7pXUwkk6wsAmerican Drug War: The Last White Hope https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1033467/?ref_=ttmi_ttThere is only one Jack Blood!Jack Blood News: https://www.facebook.com/JackBloodNews/E-Mail and Paypal jackblood@hotmail.comOCHELLI LINKS:If You Appreciate what Ochelli.com Radio Does: https://ochelli.com/donate/Ochelli Effect - Uncle - Age of Transitions - T-shirts and MORE: https://theageoftransitions.com/category/support-the-podcasts/

We are in an insane real estate market right now. Housing is off the charts, and it's now causing the rental market to go up in cost too. In this episode, our hosts Andrew Karam and Kevin Booth walk us through the difference between bank, brokers and retail lending and which one is best for you.Andrew and Kevin are mortgage brokers with the goal to find a product to suit your needs. Credit cards want you to give them interest. They're like Chinese Finger cuffs – you put your fingers in and you'll ever get them out. In this episode, Andrew Karam and Kevin Booth walk us through valuable insights in how to set budgets, avoid credit card debt, and create a successful savings plan!“I promise you if you save first you will still get your bills paid. It is a mindset and knowing your starting point. Start out small! “ If you want to save for that next home, there is no better way to start the journey to home ownership than with budgeting. Pay yourself first, pay your bill second. One important thing to realize when it comes to saving and budgeting is that they're not the same thing but do work hand in hand. However, it's never a one size fits all situation. We all live different lifestyles and have a diverse set of financial goals. Go to your past two months of bank statements and ask yourself – “is this an ‘I want' or an ‘I need'?” For subscriptions and bills, then call those companies charging you and ask if this is your cheapest option. Call that credit card and phone company, they could give you a lower rate. That money saved can better live in your savings account!Life happens. On the 75th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the Second World War, we're looking back at the long period of military tension that followed. The Cold War between communist Russia and the democratic West was effectively a war of ideologies. But it was also a war in which newly discovered nuclear weapons had the potential to destroy civilisation. One of the eerie monuments to that era is York Cold War bunker in northern England – and joining us to discuss its story while stationed in the depths of the bunker is senior curator Kevin Booth. Unfortunately the bunker remains closed to the public at this time, but to discover more about this site, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/york-cold-war-bunker.

I talk about warrior/mercenary soul/revolutionary, the comedian WILLIAM MELVIN HICKS who lived from 1961- 1994 and died at the age of 32 from pancreatic cancer, right on the verge of hitting it big in the Mainstream American Entertainment Scene. Bill Hicks helped me remember who I am, and to re-ignite the eternal source fire inside me. He would stop at nothing to uphold the greatness, integrity, and honor of the human race, and every living soul on this planet. He is one of the funniest people I ever laid my eyes on. Bill was a torch bearer of love power, he came here to set down a Galactic explosion of heart fire; a fearless warrior for Truth, Love, Freedom of Expression, and Individualism, a booming voice against all injustice and lies in this world. There are some very short audio clips and some longer ones, interspersed throughout the episode of Bill's bits (some of my favorites), so you can get a feel for who he was. Knowing that Bill existed and, still does in some form (has been immensely helpful in carrying me through the hardest times in my life.) I never belly laugh so hard as when I am watching him. His comedy is ruthless, fierce, unforgiving, cerebral, global, prophetic, and many years ahead of his time. He was a visionary, a leader and an ambassador from another world, his mission was to remind us who we are and how we can reclaim our true divine birthright of freedom and PARADISE on this planet. He spoke out against the military industrial complex, corporate agendas, the erosion of American culture through advertising and marketing with a stinging bittersweet cocktail of finesse, charm, and raw soul power. When I saw him for the first time in 2011 in a documentary called Bill Hicks: American made by his best friend, it set my soul on fire and I felt there was a soul who understood me and the meaning of why we are actually here, for the first time in my life. The balance of Bill's child-like silliness and softness with his fearless warrior nature that never hesitated to go straight for the jugular of any injustices he perceived, is a rare, magical, exquisite, beauty and mastery.Highly Recommended Book: Bill Hicks: Agent of Evolution, by Kevin Booth. Booth talks about his collaborations with both Hicks and far-right broadcaster Alex Jones (and addresses the outrageous online conspiracy that both men are actually one and the same), as well as his old bands and new projects-including the upcoming TV show Weed Court.
Join The Higherside Chats podcast as host, Greg Carlwood, talks owls, aliens and synchronicity with guest, Mike Clelland. Many of us have heard the stories of weird, ranging from missing time, alien encounters, frequent visitations and even experiencing other dimensions and beings through altered states, but what we may overlook is the peculiar presence of owls during these paranormal proceedings. Adding fuel to this fire is the ever obvious use of the owl peppered throughout both the worlds of occult and conspiracy. This hidden symbol suggests not only the importance of the owl in elite esoteric symbolism, but an otherworldly essence associated with these nocturnal creatures. Let's get into it. 2:42 Mike begins by giving an overview of the relationship of the owl to high strangeness. As Mike points out, while he may not be the first researcher to take note of the owl, he has coupled this with his personal experience to establish a connection between UFO contact and owls. He also elaborates on a particular pattern, known as screen memories, in association with owls during missing time events or alien abductions. Mike contends that owls show up regularly during highly charged human experiences as a totem animal, and have been recognized throughout ancient cultures as the messengers. 15:59 Returning to the more mystical realm of "perceived owls" during out-of body incidents, Mike details one story of an owl encounter by a woman during a "heroic dose" of mushrooms and the significance of it's appearance during this spiritual transformation. Clelland continues to drive home the power of the owl by detailing various accounts of owl sightings in connection to unearthly experiences. 22:42 With many of the stories have a connecting thread, it is easy to see how one might wonder is there is a particular type of person more susceptible to supernatural encounters. Mike describes the work of researchers, Dr. Kirby Surprise and Gibbs Williams, and their exploration of synchronicity prone people, as well as elaborates on his analysis of recurring UFO experiencers. 30:35 Another interesting aspect to the owl phenomenon is the owl acting as a messenger. Clelland details a few examples from his book involving these types of experiences and explains a possible agenda behind these cryptic telepathic messages. 37:35 Greg and Mike discuss in depth one gripping story from his book, involving a woman named Ashley haunted by strange dreams after her UFO sighting and the frequent owl encounters and odd text messages that followed. 43:15 Dr. Joe Lewels takes an interesting approach to these supernatural encounters. He contends in many cases, experiencers are being dragged into a shamanic apprenticeship where their holistic healing abilities are awakened and refined. Mike explains how this very line of thinking appropriately sums up his work on the owl's importance and symbolism. 48:50 With owl appearances ranging from UFO sightings to the presence of glowing orbs, Mike helps to clarify if there may be an unseen frequency attracting owls to these strange occurrences. Subscribe to the plus show to hear the extended episode, including: - the conspiratorial angles of Bohemian Grove, the hidden owl symbol on the dollar bill, and the owl at the center of the Pentagon- owl mythology and it's relationship with Athena- more great and strange owl related stories from Clelland's book- Chris Knowles' owl connection and his part in "The Messengers"- the Trickster elements of this phenomenon- Mike's time spent with Kevin Booth, a close friend of the famed comedian Bill Hicks, who discussed their shared UFO experience and owl symbolism related to Bill's death- charged areas and owls; sacred spaces and crop circles - Greg's own owl related syncs and preparing for the interview A few valuable resources from the interview: Owls in Mythology and Culture: http://www.owlpages.com/owls/articles.php?a=62 Dr.

This is a flashback episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Ausar Ra Black Hawk for the week of March 18, 2015 (due to it just being another VERY hectic week with events and more for the radio show; originally broadcast on the week of December 10, 2008) with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary. That week's commentary focused on the finale of the 2nd OJ Simpson trial and why the Black American community could more or less not care about his sentencing due to being arrogant and non-thinking, how Black American athletes were not having a good week (Plaxico Burress, etc.), the passing of Hip-Hop MC and D.I.T.C. member Party Arty and some other things. We also had an interview this week on the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with documentary director Kevin Booth of "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" (http://www.AmericanDrugWar.com). Some topics covered in our talk include some of the history of the Drug War in America, some of the unfairness that's in the legal system for those who do illegal drugs (long prison terms, little rehabiltation programs for those who need them, racial and economic disparities with those arrested, etc.), what made some drugs illegal and some not in the eyes of the government, the ways the documentary was completed both on the record and undercover ways and some other interesting things. We do not have new Direct EFX and Black Agenda Report news segments on this week's broadcast due to our interview.
