What is the truth about China' economy today? Read the headlines or social media and we could be forgiven for thinking that the People's Republic is falling apart. The 42 trillion property market seems to be in a death spiral. Youth unemployment is at record highs. Government debt keeps rocketing higher. And just this week, reports that foreign companies took $160 billion out of the country in the past 6 quarters. All of this makes for a riveting picture of a fragile China, a cracking and crumbling China. But is it accurate? Enter Leland Miller, CEO, The China Beige Book. Tracking China's economy since the 1990s, Leland knows China. And he knows that to really understand what is going on, you must compare and discount several streams of information at the same time. His take on where China stands to today and her economy will surprise many. China is never as good as it seems from afar. Nor is it as bad. I know you will enjoy this conversation with Leland Miller, CEO, China Beige Book.
Eric and Eliot welcome Leland Miller, a non-resident senior fellow at the Asia Security Initiative of the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center on Strategy and Security and co-founder & CEO of China Beige Book International. Lee explains how China Beige Book acquires data on the PRC economy as well as the pitfalls of using official Chinese government data. They discuss both the short and longer run prospects for China's economy, the specific dysfunctions of one man rule of managing a large economy, the question of whether or not we have seen “peak China” and if that will make the PRC more or less aggressive vis a vis Taiwan. They consider whether an invasion or blockade of the island is more likely and why any of this should matter to the broader American public. Shield of the Republic is a Bulwark podcast co-sponsored by the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

In Episode 295 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Shehzad Qazi, the Managing Director of China Beige Book, which provides institutional investors and corporate decision-makers with market-leading insights derived directly from their nationwide proprietary data on the Chinese economy. China Beige Book CEO Leland Miller was previously on Hidden Forces to talk about the impact of Covid-19 on China's economy and banking system, the latter of which has been a persistent source of weakness for the country's growth prospects. He and Demetri also discussed some of the geopolitical consequences that could potentially flow from the ongoing global disruptions caused by the pandemic and the effects on China's highly levered real estate market. Today's conversation with Shehzad Qazi picks up where that conversation with Leland Miller left off. With the Chinese economy's long-awaited reopening potentially picking up steam and the US and Europe possibly teetering on the edge of recession, the health of the Chinese economy remains the predominant demand variable driving the market's expectations for inflation and commodity prices globally. Shehzad shares with us what he and his team are seeing in terms of growth expectations for 2023 and why markets seem to be having such a difficult time pricing the risks associated with China's covid re-opening and its effect on the prices of key commodities such as oil, copper, and iron ore. He and Demetri also discuss the ongoing impact of geopolitical tensions on global supply chains and the effect of recent export controls on China's semiconductor industry. Learn more about CI Futures: https://www.completeintel.com/futuresThis Week Ahead episode discusses the current state of the Chinese economy and its potential trajectory in the future, with experts Leland Miller, Mary Kissel, and Samuel Rines. In this episode, the panel discusses China's gradual reopening, China's place in the world, and the Chinese Communist Party's economy. Leland Miller, who leads China Beige Book, talks about China's Great(ish) Re-opening. He notes that the reopening has been a gradual process and not as quick as some had claimed it would be. He raises the question of when we will see China really break out, whether it will be after the Lunar New Year/Spring Festival or later. He also discussed what activity we should be watching to know that China is really back to normal, such as investment, hiring, etc. He concludes by commenting on what a "normal" Chinese economy will look like in 2024 and beyond. Mary Kissel, from Stephens, leads a discussion on China's place in the world. She notes that with confirmation that China's population has already peaked, there seems to be a subtle reassessment of the "China opportunity." She points out that there is a very different view of China from the European perspective vs the US perspective. Europe seems to be growing closer to China while the US seems to be pulling back. She also shares how US-China relations will change as China normalizes and whether US companies are really moving out of China. She also discusses the push-and-pull factors that influence these decisions and if US companies will be complacent and stop moving to manufacture elsewhere after the slower opening in China. Samuel Rines, from Corbu, leads a discussion on The Party's economy. He notes that under Xi's leadership, we've seen the Chinese Communist Party return to a more involved role across Chinese society. He shares if the government will be more assertive toward businesses - both domestic and foreign businesses - in a post-Covid world and if that could impact how foreign investors view investments in China. He also mentions recent central government intervention in several sectors, most notably tech and real estate, and asks how involved the government will be in the repair of the real estate sector and protecting the tech sector. He also shares that if given renewed government involvement as well as factors like population and economic slowdown, we expect these sectors to return to rapid growth anytime soon. Finally, the panel members share what they are thinking about China that they're not sure most people see. Key themes: 1. China's Great(ish) Re-opening 2. China's place in the world 3. The Party's economy This is the 50th episode of The Week Ahead, where experts talk about the week that just happened and what will most likely happen in the coming week.
