How do beliefs jump from one generation to the next? Passing on your belief system - whether religious or otherwise - can be a really important priority for parents. Do churches offer much preparation or training to help people share what they hold dear? And do they support parents and grandparents who discover that children have perhaps turned their back on religion? If it takes a village to raise a child, does it take a village to school them in morals, ethics and spirituality? Teasing out some answers to these questions in the studio with Claire Graham are Roz Stirling who runs retreats and for a long time led the youth work strategy for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland; Boyd Sleater, coordinator of Northern Ireland Humanists; Lindsay Allen, a parent of two boys and a retired Baptist Pastor; and Fr Martin Magill, a Catholic Priest in west Belfast and a co-founder of the 4 Corners Festival.

Oakland won for the fourth time in five games. The majors-worst Athletics, who hadn’t shut out an opponent all season before a 1-0 victory Tuesday night, held the Tigers scoreless for the first 17 innings of the series. The Tigers only had two baserunners in the first seven innings and both were erased on double plays. Miguel Cabrera broke the scoreless streak with an RBI double in the eighth. Athletics starter Austin Pruitt retired all nine batters he faced. Ken Waldichuk (2-5) allowed three runs on two hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. Both runners advanced on a groundout and Tauchman sliced an opposite-field double to left to tie it at 3. Tauchman scored the go-ahead run when Nico Hoerner reached on a throwing error by third baseman Brian Anderson. Michael Rucker (2-1) got the victory with two innings of scoreless relief. Adbert Alzolay threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save in six opportunities. Robert earned the top seed in an eight-player field announced Wednesday that includes Seattle’s Julio Rodríguez, 2018 American League MVP Mookie Betts, Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Tampa Bay’s Randy Arozarena, Texas’ Adolis García and Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman. Alonso will try to join Ken Griffey Jr. as the only three-time champions. Robert will go against Rutschman in the first round, with Alonso facing Rodriguez. Betts meets Guerrero, and García goes against Arozarena. The seeding was determined by home run totals through Tuesday. Tiebreakers went to the player with the most homers since June 15. MLB – Cameraman at Yankee Stadium injured by wild throw A cameraman has been injured at Yankee Stadium and taken to the hospital after he was hit in the head by a wild throw from Baltimore Orioles rookie shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Positioned next to New York’s dugout on the first-base side, Pete Stendel of YES Network was struck by a hurried throw from Henderson, who fired high to first as he tried to complete a double play. After the game, YES said Stendel was conscious and undergoing tests in the hospital. Play was delayed about 17 minutes as Stendel received medical attention in the camera well. Yankees and Orioles players, including Henderson, watched in obvious concern at a hushed ballpark. Stendel was strapped onto a stretcher and carted off the field, raising and wagging two fingers to loud applause. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Minnesota Lynx 90, Indiana Fever 83 Lynx 90, Fever 83 – Collier scores 32 points, Lynx beat Fever 90-83 for their fourth straight victory Napheesa Collier had 32 points and eight rebounds, Kayla McBride added 21 points and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Indiana Fever 90-83 for their fourth straight victory. Minnesota took its first double-digit lead with 4:01 left in the fourth quarter on a free throw by Collier to make it 80-70. Indiana scored six straight points to get within 82-76 following Lexie Hull’s steal and fast-break layup, but Collier answered at the other end for an eight-point lead with 1:12 left. Lindsay Allen scored 16 points for Minnesota (8-9). Rookie Diamond Miller, coming off a career-high 25 points, was held to one point in 24 minutes. Aliyah Boston had 22 points and nine rebounds and NaLyssa Smith added 18 points and 11 rebounds for Indiana. NBA – Antetokounmpo had knee surgery this offseason, should be ready for training camp Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo had surgery on his left knee during the offseason. But Milwaukee coach Adrian Griffin said Wednesday the two-time MVP should be ready for training camp. Griffin said after a practice with the Bucks’ summer league team that Antetokounmpo had a “routine” procedure and “it went great.” Antetokounmpo finished third in MVP balloting this past season, during which he missed 11 games for what the team called left knee soreness. It’s unclear whether the surgery will prevent Antetokounmpo from playing for Greece in the World Cup, which begins Aug. 25. Tennis – Djokovic and Swiatek won at Wimbledon. Protests and rain capture the attention The developments at Wimbledon include Novak Djokovic joining Roger Federer and Serena Williams as the only players in tennis history to win 350 Grand Slam matches. A runner-up two years ago, Karolina Pliskova, exited in the first round against a qualifier. A player seeded No. 8, Maria Sakkari, took the opening set 6-0 but managed to lose. Ho-hum. Those turned out to be among the least unusual happenings around the All England Club on Day 3 of this year’s tournament. That’s because so much of the buzz around the place Wednesday concerned protests and, yes, rain.. Golf – LPGA – Pebble Beach is giving the best female golfers a chance at US Open history Pebble Beach is holding another U.S. Open. And this time the best female golfers get their chance to add to all the lore. The U.S. Women’s Open comes to the most famous U.S. Open course for the first time. Some of the memories from past U.S. Opens include Jack Nicklaus hitting the 17th pin with a 1-iron and Tiger Woods winning by 15 shots. Now it’s the women’s turn. NCAAFB – Ex-Florida QB Jalen Kitna agrees to plea deal; drops 5 felony child porn counts Ex-Florida quarterback Jalen Kitna, the son of retired NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, has agreed to a plea deal that will dismiss five felony child pornography charges stemming from his arrest last November. The Gators dismissed Kitna from the team days after his arrest. Formula 1 – FIA wonders how it can deny GM a spot on Formula 1 grid, president tells AP The president of the FIA is telling The Associated Press the motorsports governing body has received more than five applications for expansion into Formula One. The last few years, Geno Auriemma and Connecticut had the best center and the best point guard in the country.  The result was multiple national championships. Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said that this year the Irish have the best point guard in Lindsay Allen and the best center in junior Brianna Turner. Obviously this all means at the end of the season Notre Dame will be cutting down the nets in Texas come April, right? If only it were that easy! Turner is the perfect example of why foregone conclusions in November are sometimes disappointments in April. Turner is supremely talented, and her on court performance has certainly not disappointed. However, her shoulder has been a problem, and injuries have not allowed her to complete one of her two seasons unscathed. McGraw, Turner, and all of Notre Dame nation hope that the surgery Turner had in the spring will solve the problems, and allow Turner to lead this year's squad to an NCAA championship. Blessed with extraordinary instincts and jumping ability, Turner is extremely hard to deal with in the paint on both ends of the court. Despite missing time, last season she was still ACC conference player of the year, and Defensive player of the year. Turner averaged just under 15 points per game, and over seven rebounds per game, shooting 59 percent from the floor. Turner is a member of our inaugural Dishie All-American team, and is ready to show everyone what she can do in a full, healthy season. Good luck Brianna, and for you, here is Brianna Turner from ESPN Media Day, in her own words.
