On this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Blair Bigham and Dr. Mojola Omole tackle the systemic barriers that patients with disabilities face, from inaccessible clinic spaces to discriminatory attitudes. The discussion is inspired by the CMAJ practice article, "Five ways to support people who use wheelchairs," authored by Dr. Lisa Freeman. Dr. Freeman, a public health and preventative medicine physician who uses a wheelchair, shares her lived experiences navigating a healthcare system riddled with obstacles. She introduces practical steps that physicians can take to make their practices more inclusive, such as improving communication, ensuring referrals are effective, and addressing physical accessibility.David Lepofsky, chair of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act Alliance, explains the legal obligations that healthcare providers must meet to comply with human rights and accessibility laws. He offers actionable guidance on how physicians can reduce barriers, from small changes like posting signage to long-term planning for accessible infrastructure. This episode underscores that accessibility is both a legal requirement and a fundamental part of equitable patient care. It challenges physicians to take immediate steps toward making their practices more inclusive for patients with disabilities.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. In 2022, Portland residents voted to overhaul the city’s form of government. That includes using ranked choice voting to expand the number of seats on city council from five to 12. Another major change is the creation of four geographic districts in the city. Voters within each district will now elect three candidates to represent them on the new council. Thirty registered candidates are competing in District 4, which includes all of Portland west of the Willamette River, including Downtown, the Pearl District, Multnomah and Hillsdale neighborhoods. It also contains the inner southeast neighborhoods of Sellwood-Moreland, Eastmoreland, Reed and Ardenwald. On Oct. 24, “Think Out Loud” convened a D4 candidates forum at John’s Marketplace in Multnomah Village. We invited the 13 candidates with the largest number of individual donors who contributed to their campaigns. They include: Eli Arnold, Olivia Clark, Lisa Freeman, Mitch Green, Chris Henry, Ben Hufford, Chad Lykins, Tony Morse, Stanley Penkin, Moses Ross, Sarah Silkie, Bob Weinstein and Eric Zimmerman.

As the name suggests, the Freakybuttrue Peculiarium and Museum in Portland offers a uniquely curated collection. Lisa Freeman and Mike Wellins conceived the idea while they were in the process of buying a food cart in 2010. They had wanted to transition from their respective careers and thought the food cart would be both creative and challenging. But they found themselves talking more about decorating the cart than the food they would sell, and they soon realized they were being drawn in a different, more peculiar direction.More than a decade later, their art-gallery/museum/oddity warehouse space is crammed with an indescribable variety of items, from original art and books to knick-knacks and clothing, and one-of-a-kind exhibits reflecting the history of Portland. A life-sized anti-Santa called Krampus greets museum goers when they walk in. It's a floor to ceiling experience that Freeman says often stops people in their tracks when they first enter.Freeman and her partner reopened last year after a long pandemic hiatus. Now, they say, business is back and better than ever. Their current obsession is with the grand reopening of their snack bar, which is coming back with an even wider and weirder range of offerings. Note: that's aside from the regular “Bug Sundays.” Freeman and Wellins join us to share more about the Peculiarium's regular and coming attractions.

This week, we're looking at an important topic in the world of royalties: private copying. This topic is very important for music creators to be aware of, as Canada only has private copying levies on outdated technology and has not kept up with new developments in technology. Suddenly, all that is in jeopardy when she receives a letter from the Parole Board of Canada. Despite a sentence of Life Imprisonment, Lisa learns that her father’s killer is able to begin the parole process well before he reaches the twenty-five-year eligibility mark. She realizes that she now faces an even greater challenge: the assertion of her rights versus the rights of the man who axed her father to death. And, with ever-present obstacles from the Parole Board in her path, she knows that she won’t just need a strong resolve to face her father’s killer, but an equally strong one to fight the Parole Board.Lisa Freeman’s moving and unforgettable story tells how she navigated through the daunting policies of the Parole Board of Canada and tells of a promise between sisters and the fulfillment of a last wish. Host Kristin Brynteson is on a quest to talk about failure. Joining her today is NIU president, Dr. Lisa C. Freeman. Follow NIU STEAM on Twitter: https://twitter.com/niusteam Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NIUSTEAM/ Transcript: KB: Failure. We all do it, but none of us like to talk about it. Failure's hard to deal with. It can be painful. It can be embarrassing. Admitting we failed is like admitting we are the failure. In reality, that's not true. A wise teacher once told me “The greatest teacher, failure is.” Okay, that wise teacher was Yoda, and he didn't directly tell it to me. He told it to Luke, but I still heard it. Either way, our favorite grammatically challenged jedi makes a good point: failure is a teacher. Through failure we learn and grow. I'm Kristin Brynteson, and you're listening to the Failure Bites podcast, where successful people tell bite-sized stories of failure, growth and success. Today, we are honored to talk with Dr. Lisa C. Freeman, president of Northern Illinois University. Dr. Freeman is an accomplished academic and respected leader. LF: So, I started veterinary college the same time that I started a master's degree that had a heavy field research component. I knew coming out of my senior year undergrad as the result of a very strong undergraduate research experience that I wanted to combine my professional training with additional graduate training. And I was very enthusiastic about doing that, but I was pursuing that opportunity at an institution which at that time had no pathway to facilitate that for students, and I just assumed that I would be able to persevere regardless. The veterinary school curriculum was very rigorous and very time-consuming, and I really struggled to manage my research time. My research lab was... Maybe contemptuous is not too strong a word of the fact that I also wanted a professional degree, that a graduate degree wasn't kind of good enough for me, so there was a lot of pressure not to ask for help in meeting some of my research goals. I became overwhelmed, and as a result, my academic performance in vet school slipped to the point where I was close to being academically dismissed from veterinary school. Fortunately, I was able to pull it together and rally and recover and then ask for help. And the lesson I think that I learned from my failure in the situation, although ultimately I didn't do the big fail of flunking out of vet school, I failed because I didn't get as much out of the curriculum as I could have. I didn't capitalize on the opportunity that I had. I also let a number of people down because I couldn't do anything well because I was trying to do too much and I failed because I looked at asking for help as a sign of failure when asking for help is actually a sign of strength. The ability to acknowledge that you're not a super person, a superhero, a superwoman, a superman, that there is no shame in saying I can't do everything myself and I need some assistance and support to accomplish my goals and I think I learned that the hard way in the situation but I think it was a very important lesson. KB: You just heard NIU president Dr. Lisa C. Freeman. Her tale of failure might sound familiar. We all tend to overextend ourselves, set high--maybe even unrealistic--expectations, and then don't reach out for help when we need it. Luke did not defeat the Empire all by himself. He used his resources. He asked for help from his friends and tapped into the wisdom of some really smart ghost jedis. If you feel like failure's looming, save yourselves and possibly the Galaxy by reaching out for help. I'm Kristin Brynteson, and this was Failure Bites. Leave a review and subscribe for more. If you don't know how, we'll be happy to help. This podcast was produced by NIU STEAM at Northern Illinois University. Your future. Our Focus. www.niu.edu/niusteam

Joe takes the issues… especially the controversial issues (politics, prejudice, religion, illegal immigration)… and brings in people from different sides to share their viewpoint. This is definitely not a fluff piece. And while no one is attacked, the questions are hard-hitting. But the conversation is always respectful and you're sure to learn something new, even if you don't agree! It's not the right side, it's not the wrong side, but the REAL side of the issues!

THE BULLY AND THE BULLIED Kids get bullied. Adults get bullied. Workers get bullied. It’s just a fact of life, right? We grow up change jobs, move new places and there’s no harm, no foul, right? Well, maybe not. Could bullying actually be tied to abuse, domestic violence and long term consequences? What happens when your parent or your teacher is the bully? Or your supervisor at work or a relative? Lisa Freeman, award winning author and speaker, will help us sort it all out Saturday. She’s appeared on TCT Today, Family Life Radio, Family Forum, news programs (such as WNEM-TV 5, WEYI-TV 25, WILNS-TV 6, ABC-TV 12 and more!) and has made headlines in newspapers both at the local and national level. For four years she hosted her own televised ministry “A Time to Heal.” Currently she writes a blog, “Abuse Bites but True Love Heals” to inspire others. She also lost a son in 2010, who had been bullied all his life for having Asperger’s Syndrome and a rare heart disease. Both personally and professionally, Lisa knows the ins and outs of bullying. Join us Saturday at 11 am Pacific Time to learn more about the causes, effects, and long term consequences of bullying. Call-in with your comments to (646) 378-0430. And if you miss the live program, you can go to the website and listen to all our archived programs whenever you like. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/3women3ways
Tonight's special guest is Lisa Freeman, from Michigan, the Founder and CEO of Abuse Bites and "A Time to Heal Ministries." She is a lifelong Abuse Survivor, who, after a life of child abuse, ran away, lived on the streets, was forced into prostitution, and later suffered through two horrific abusive marriages. Everyone in Freeman's family, even her dogs, were abused or bullied in some way, (and have abused and bullied others), but they have all healed. Now they travel abroad sharing their inspirational stories in an educational program to offer complete healing to victims, bystanders, bullies, and families. Freeman's son, Brian, was bullied all his life for having Asperger's Syndrome and a rare heart condition. Instead of taking revenge on his bullies, he had a change of heart, forgave them, and wanted to help them. He wanted to travel all over the USA with their program even though he was on the heart transplant list. Sadly, just as they were getting ready to go, Brian passed away. After he died, his family found a change jar he'd been saving. It was then they knew they were to collect change, so they could do what Brian wanted .. go all over to change hearts and save lives!
