How can you create a company culture that prioritizes giving back? After all, it’s hard enough to build a positive company culture, let alone one that centers around helping others. However, with the right attitude and resources, it’s completely possible. That’s the thinking that fueled entrepreneur and former nurse Victoria Sylvester to develop and scale her company. The first thing Victoria did to lay the foundation for a culture of giving was to put her employees first. Creating a people-centered business helped her employees feel empowered to give back. Today, Victoria and I discuss her people-first mentality and the road that led to her becoming a CEO. You’ll learn why profit and loss isn’t the end-all-be-all when it comes to business success; Victoria’s philosophy on delivering value in business; and how to give back as part of your daily operations. About my guest:Victoria Sylvester is the CEO of Acacia Training, a UK company that provides specialized educational training to people in the health and wellness sector. Victoria started her career in nursing, where she began training student nurses and healthcare support nurses. Hey planners! It’s our absolute pleasure to introduce you to today’s guest, Victoria Holland of Victoria Ann Events. Victoria plans and designs events for couples who are looking to infuse every ounce of their personality into their wedding day. In this episode, Victoria shares her experience of getting into the events industry, freelancing for event companies and eventually starting her own wedding planning business. She and Heather chat about everything she’s learned from her last 5 years in business including how she gained more referrals, who her ideal clients are, how she uses Instagram to connect to couples and so much more! What’s in this episode: How Victoria got her start in the events industry How she went from a freelancer to the owner of her own wedding planning business Victoria’s experience with her first wedding planning client What shifted with her confidence and business after that first client How her wedding planning workshop helped her to find more clients What her elevator pitch is to her wedding couples The client that Victoria tends to work with How she uses Instagram as a tool to share who she is as a person and a planner Her advice for sharing about yourself on social media The marketing strategies she used to build relationships with vendors Victoria’s biggest strengths and challenges within her business What it’s like to run into non-ideal clients Where she’d like to see her company go in the next few years Her advice for wedding planners who are just getting started How the Planner Life Academy community has supported her About Victoria: Growing up, my mother had a dinner party for just about everything. She would make name cards, put out her best china, let me help her pick flowers, and always cook something spectacular. She taught me, “Presentation is everything.” Long-story-short, the attention to detail, organization and joy that give me my knack for event-planning are in my blood (because truly, I got it from my Mama). My whole life I’ve had a passion for all the elements that make events experiences. Beyond that, I’ve always been told that I throw a really effing fun party, so I decided to leave my career in hospitality and pursue event-planning for real. What I’m told draws many of my clients to me is my eye for the details, understanding of who they are, and calm attitude even when things get crazy. What keeps me so fulfilled is my relationships with my clients themselves. Nothing makes me happier than working with a couple to make a vision come to life and genuinely having fun all along the way. Born and raised in Canada, Victoria Watson is a health policy specialist driven to close equity gaps in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Before joining the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning, Victoria worked in Washington, D.C. at the Center for Health and Gender Equity as an SRHR research analyst exploring the impact of foreign policy and legislation on reproductive justice, health, and human rights fulfillment. In Canada, she has worked as a policy coordinator at Cancer Care Ontario facilitating patient engagement and cancer screening program design, wherein she honed a passion for generating patient-centered policies and programming. Her personal experience as a cancer survivor motivated a life-long commitment to non-communicable disease (NCD) advocacy and community engagement, and for this reason, Victoria also sits on the Governing Council of NCD Child, a global advocacy coalition championing youth health rights in global NCD control. As a teenager, Victoria was an ambassador for Canada’s Children’s Wish Foundation, being a public speaker and sharing her story as a survivor to emphasize the need for integrated social support for cancer patients. Following her undergraduate in public policy and MSc. in Global Health, she applied her research and work experiences to better understand the social determinants to health that put youth at greater risk of preventable chronic diseases, and what health systems can do to make care more accessible, affordable, and meaningful for diverse populations. This led her to work at high-level global health organizations such as the Clinton Foundation, to working within hospitals in southern India. What you’ll learn about in this episode: How Victoria’s organization operates in more than 80 countries, advancing sexual and reproductive health rights, and justice for young people and adolescents globally How the International Youth Alliance for Family Planning was founded in 2013 as a movement of young people pressing to be included in the discussion around global health policy-making and discourse What organizational, cultural and financial challenges the IYAFP faced as a young, global organization How the IYAFP maneuvered and scaled up from being a grassroots organization to a formalized INGO What advice Victoria has for nonprofits just starting out and for nonprofits that have reached a plateau and are having trouble progressing What common problems organizations face when reaching a growth plateau, and why refocusing your organization on its mission can often help correct these issues Why utilizing communication best practices can help strengthen your team and reorient your team around the organization’s vision What practical, actionable advice Victoria has for nonprofit organizations attempting to navigate the global pandemic crisis Why taking the time to do a strategic refresh can help you identify ways to adapt to crisis and your changing environment Why data, communication with stakeholders, and a focus on the community you serve and its needs can help you navigate challenging times Additional resources: Website: https://iyafp.org/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/victoria-watson-aba9a752/ Additional resources from Wild Apricot: Website: www.wildapricot.com Episode Host, Alexandra Morgan’s LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/alexandramorganca/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/wildapricot Twitter: @WildApricot
In the fast-paced world that we live in, with so many opportunities knocking on our doors, it seems like we are ready to say ‘yes’ to everything that comes our way, sometimes without reflecting on whether it moves us in the direction of our goals or not. Before rushing into taking any action, slow down for a bit. Reflect on past opportunities. Which ones served you well? Which ones didn't? What lessons did you learn along the way to inform your thinking for the next move? Will the next step you take, get you closer to your dreams? These are essential questions one has to answer, and my guest, Victoria Trabosh, is masterful at showing leaders how to harness the power of reflection to become their best selves and transform their lives. In 2005, she co-founded the Itafari Foundation for Rwanda, through which she continually uses her strong voice to help others.Victoria believes that slowing down will actually allow us to go faster, and today, she shares a five-step process that has helped thousands of leaders walk smoother through their journey to success, and she also talks about a framework that goes hand in hand with that process. If you want to learn more about how the simple act of reflection can shape a better future for you, then tune in to Episode 09 of Roar, to hear powerful takeaways that will have a lasting impact on everything that you do.Some questions I ask:Tell us a little bit about your background - where are you from, and who were some of your biggest influences growing up? (03:00)When you think back on your experiences that really shaped you to be who you are, what stands out as maybe one of the defining moments in your life that helped you establish your Roar? (05:07)What’s on your goals sheet, and how are you leveraging this complete five-step process to achieve them? (17:11)How does your dream coach framework enable hundreds and thousands of people to really transform their lives and their career? (23:14)Why is self-reflection so important? (29:49)How can we get started on the path to reflection? (33:22)In this episode, you will learn:How Victoria drove leaders to the next level of success by teaching them to slow down in order to move fast. If you haven’t “met” Victoria Welsby through her Fierce Fatty podcast or book, Fierce Fatty: Love Your Body and Live Life Like the Queen You Already Are, then allow me to introduce you! You’re going to want to hear what Victoria has to say about fatphobia and how our own internalized fatphobia can greatly sabotage our best efforts to become intuitive eaters and heal the way we feel about our bodies. In this episode we talk about: Victoria’s story of overcoming homelessness, abuse, and internalized fatphobia. Her stumbling upon Regan Chastain’s blog, Dances with Fat, and this being her first introduction to the idea that she doesn’t need to change herself and try shrinking her body. Fatphobia. What is it? What does it mean to have internalized fatphobia or to be fatphobic? When the idea that having a bigger body means you will be unloved or unwanted is simply a belief and that beliefs can be replaced with other beliefs that actually serve you. How a coach or therapist can help you get out of your own head and out of your own way on your road to recovery. How Victoria’s personal story paved the way for her current work now which includes her e-course the Fierce Fatty academy, her TEDx talk, the Fierce Fatty podcast, and her book (links below). How her signature body-loving move is wearing a bikini and dancing around in public with NO apologies.
Sending so much love to all of you affected by the Coronavirus Crisis. To help with keeping things normal in your daily routines, to give you things to do during this extra time we have and most importantly- tools to help with the anxiety of these uncertain times, I wanted to share today’s episode with you. One of probably the most important conversations we have had on the show, in today’s episode we explore how trauma shows up in our lives and in our bodies, and how to use healing modalities such as breathwork and meditation to help heal. Today’s guest on the show, Victoria Albina, will blow you away with her likeability yet nerdy, research driven vibes. Victoria Albina, NP, MPH is a Certified Life Coach, Certified Breathwork Journey Meditation Facilitator and Holistic Nurse Practitioner who is on a mission to help women raised by alcoholics and codependents to heal their relationship with themselves: mind, body and spirit so they can live confident, healthy lives free from anxiety, stress and overwhelm. As a Feminist Confidence Coach and host of the Feminist Wellness Podcast, Victoria teaches women how to live with confidence and radical, unapologetic self-love. With 20 years in health & wellness, Victoria brings cognitive psychology, somatic healing, neuroscience and feminist theory to her work, providing both a unique framework for understanding the effects of the patriarchy and capitalism on women’s mental and physical health, and an effective yet simple protocol for rewriting harmful old thought patterns to release anxiety and insecurity and to feel confident instead. A former primary care provider and Functional Medicine expert, Victoria came to understand that the deepest root-cause healing work her patients were seeking was not found in lab work, supplements, prescriptions and restrictive nutrition plans. While all of that is an important part of the healing process, sustainable, long-lasting healing comes when we attend to mind, body and spirit, by healing our nervous systems and learning to manage the thought-patterns that keep us stuck and sick. By learning to look at our childhood wounds, our adult thought patterns, our somatic experience of challenging emotions and our energetics, Victoria guides women to a deeper place of health and healing – healing that lasts a lifetime. In this episode we discuss: Victoria’s journey to becoming a certified life coach, certified breathwork journey meditation facilitator and holistic nurse practitioner. How trauma impacts our health and wellness and how it shows up physically and mentally How microtraumas still impact your health How to heal trauma so that you can heal your health issues The scientific benefits to breathwork and meditation Victoria’s top tips to beginning a breathing and meditation daily practice What the mind body spirit connection means How Victoria practices wellness without obsession Learn more about Victoria Albina: Victoria's website Victoria's Instagram Victoria's podcast Victoria's free breathwork guide Thank you to today’s podcast sponsors: Thank you to one of our podcast sponsors, Simple Mills. This episode is also brought to you by New Chapter. As a women’s health dietitian and educator, I have been on the search for my official recommendation for a prenatal vitamin for quite some time, and I am thrilled to say I finally found the one, and actually a prenatal AND postnatal vitamin- that checks all my boxes. What’s so cool about New Chapter’s perfect prenatal vitamin is that it is fermented for better absorption with beneficial probiotics and whole foods, which also makes it easy to digest and gentle on the stomach- which if you’ve ever taken a prenatal vitamin you know that’s not always the case. Plus their new improved formula contains ginger to help combat morning sickness. It contains all the key nutrients your body needs for a growing baby, including methylfolate- which is the active form of folate I personally always recommend to my clients when they are looking for a prenatal. And they also have a Perfect postnatal vitamin, which is what I am personally taking now. Its formulated specifically for new moms and our needs, to help us replenish nutrient stores from having a baby meaning its going to contain key nutrients like iodine, vitamin D, fermented iron as well as fermented B vitamins to support energy needs. What I think is so helpful is that it also contains herbs and plants that have been used traditionally for lactation like oats, kelp, chamomile and turmeric. As with all New Chapter supplements and products, these prenatal and postnatal vitamins are nonGMO certified, made with organic whole foods and herbs and responsibly sourced. I mean I could it get any better, I don’t think so! You can purchase New Chapter prenatal and postnatal vitamins on New Chapter’s website, Whole Foods, CVS, Amazon and local health food stores. Guest Victoria Smith knows firsthand the damaging effects that stress can have on our health, along with our general well-being. She has taken her own experience with stress, burnout, and recovery to transition to a life where she coaches others to use stress management and reduction tools. Victoria talks about the moment she knew that she had to take control of her health, gives us a few quick tips that we can start today to destress, and the common stressors she sees when working with her clients. What You'll Hear In This Episode: It may look on the outside like everyone besides us has their life totally together and figured out. Not only is that not the case, but it's far from it. This can help us have realistic expectations instead of feeling like we are always falling behind in some manner. How Victoria's high paced and stressful way of life lead to burnout, and what exactly the symptoms of stress can look like. Stress is the #1 cause of shingles in younger adults, and what it felt like for Victoria to have to be vulnerable and admit to her coworkers that she had it, and needed to take time off to heal and rest. What burnout can look like and ways that you can recognize the signs for yourself and your loved ones. The painful and tumultuous time in Victoria's life when she was caught in the middle of her parents' divorce, and the toll it took on her own energy and life force. The benefits Victoria found in counseling services, and other major tools that helped her along her wellness recovery journey. Why setting boundaries is so important to our well being, and to preserve our energy so that we can be the best for both ourselves and others. How Victoria's podcast Girl Tries Life shines a spotlight on other women who are accomplishing big things and also committed to their health and self-growth. It takes time, energy, and dedication for stress reduction, but the results are worth it. A few of Victoria's strategies to immediately reduce your stress. We have power over our stress life and being a “stressed out” person is not a life sentence. Quotes: “Everyone on the outside always seems to be hacking it, but you don't go home with them.” “The most important thing is to always try.” “I may not succeed, but I will have tried.” “You can only control you.” Mentioned: Calgary Counseling Center Girl Tries Life Stress Less Ladies Release Meditation Technique Journey Into the Inner Circle: Carrie Doll @CarrieADoll – Twitter @carriedollconsulting – Instagram Carrie Doll – Facebook Please rate, review and follow the podcast!
