Ageless Athlete - Fireside Chats with Adventure Sports Icons
“Get people outside. Let them walk, let them move. And if they can't, do it in a wheelchair. Fresh air and movement—at any level—still have the power to bring joy, connection, and even a little bit of who they once were.”In this episode of The Ageless Athlete Podcast, I sit down with ultra-endurance athlete, coach, and bestselling author Travis Macy to explore one of the most powerful and personal lessons from his life: how movement, the outdoors, and adventure are helping his father, Mark Macy, live well despite an Alzheimer's diagnosis.Travis has competed in some of the toughest endurance races on the planet, including The Eco-Challenge—where he and his father raced together in Fiji, pushing past limits that most would have thought impossible. But now, he's applying that same endurance mindset to something even more profound: keeping his father active, engaged, and thriving for as long as possible.Through this conversation, we uncover why exercise isn't just about performance—it's about healthspan, and how movement, human connection, and time spent outside can be game-changers for those facing cognitive decline. What You'll Learn in This Episode
Thanks to our technology becoming ever more advanced, stories of hauntings and communications from the dead are now being proven through telecommunication equipment. Mark Macy once appeared on Ground Zero with Clyde Lewis to talk about phone calls from the dead. He proposed that it was possible to communicate with the disembodied spirits using telephones, radios, and televisions. This type of contact with the alleged dead was still in its infancy but it was very effective as the voices that were heard were long sentences and very clear. It is with the same technologies that spirit boxes or portals have been built. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time), we will utilize some electronic devices with paranormal investigator, Joshua Louis.Originally Broadcast On 10/31/24

We get into some ITC review, you come along with me as I listen to this audio for the first time and we learn why I was so obsessed and still am with getting any information I can on "The Seven." I hope you enjoy follow-along review we do and hopefully you also hear how bonkers it is. Then we go down further into one of the many "rabbit-holes for life" and get into some history of ITC regarding Mark Macy, a pioneer in the field. If you've ever run an ultramarathon, you almost certainly know the name of Marshall Ulrich. His accomplishments are unparalleled, and if I tried to list them, I'd undoubtedly leave out many. I could naturally mention his 29 official Badwater finishes in Death Valley, a race most of us would not want to tackle even once. Or that he dwarfed those finishes by continuing on to the Mt. Whitney summit, or that he once ran around the entire 425-mile perimeter of Death Valley, which we have fun talking about here. He completed the Seven Summits on his first attempt, and he set the speed record for the transcontinental run across the U.S., recounted in his great book, "Running on Empty." I could add his Stray Dogs team completed all of the Eco-Challenges, televised as The World's Toughest Race. You may have already heard about all of this, so instead let's focus on his latest endeavors, like the Route 66 Ultrarun, a 140-mile, multi-day event along that historic route in Arizona, and his support for his good friend and fellow Stray Dogs teammate Mark Macy in his inspiring battle against Alzheimer's. Marshall is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in the sport. He was an early mentor to an aspiring ultraendurance athlete named David Clark, and wrote the foreword to David's first book, "Out There, a Story of Ultrarecovery." Marshall's latest book, "Both Feet on the Ground," will inspire you to seek out your own adventures. Here we explore scientific findings of the continuity of human consciousness beyond the physical body. There is much that is constantly going on beyond our ordinary senses. Drasin explores the comparison that the “greater reality” beyond physical life might be analogous to an ocean and the soul is analogous to a surfer's wave that has form and endurance but is not separate from the ocean. Dan Drasin is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and has been a photographer and media producer for more than six decades. He's also the Operations Manager of New Dimensions and the announcer whose voice you hear on each program. His short 1961 documentary film titled Sunday was widely acknowledged as the first social-protest film of the 1960s and is part of the permanent film collection at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Since the early 1990s, Drasin has been actively investigating the field of afterlife communication through traditional mental and physical mediumship, as well as modern electronics as featured in his documentary film, Calling Earth. He is the author of A New Science of the Afterlife: Space, Time, and the Consciousness Code (Park Street Press 2023)Interview Date: 5/5/2023. Mark Macy founded the International Network for Instrumental Transcommunication (INIT) in England in 1995, along with a dozen other researchers from eight countries. Their intent was to open a contact bridge between Heaven and Earth, or more precisely, between our world and the finer worlds of spirit, using technology as the medium. In the course of five years the group received dozens of phone calls and TV images from the other side. They enjoyed long dialogs with spirits and angels through radio devices and had files planted quietly on the hard disks of their computers. Some of those files contained images, others contained text - - actual pictures and letters depicting life in the spirit worlds in extraordinary detail. Macy himself received one particular phone call from a departed colleague named Konstantin Raudive that lasted nearly fifteen minutes. It's all part of a young field of research called ITC, or instrumental transcommunication. For the past five years Macy has focused most of his attention on a small subset of ITC in which he receives clear spirit faces on Polaroid film with the help of a subtle energy device called a "luminator." He has also kept busy spreading the word about ITC through books, interviews, Powerpoint presentations, TV specials, documentaries, and a massive ITC website, www.worlditc.org, mastered by his good friend and ITC colleague Rolf Ehrhardt of Ratingen, Germany. Macy was an agnostic or atheist as far back as he can remember - - a writer with a background in journalism and electronics. Thoughts of God and afterlife always seemed like wishful thinking to him. That changed in 1988 when he was diagnosed with colon cancer. With death staring him in the face, suddenly he had to know - - - what really happens to us after we die? He couldn't take it on faith alone. Not that there's anything wrong with faith, but Macy had always needed proof or solid evidence to convince him of something that was beyond his understanding. And afterlife was certainly beyond his understanding. At a conference in 1991 he was introduced to ITC research, and at first he could scarcely believe researchers in Europe who claimed to be in touch with spirits through technical devices. So after the conference ended he hopped on a transatlantic flight to visit with those researchers, and what he found changed his life forever. He's been fully immersed in ITC research ever since. Today he lives in Colorado with his wife Regina. The empty-nesters (their son entered college in 2005) fill their time with spiritual pursuits, including Mark's ITC research and Regina's energy healing. - http://www.spiritfaces.com/To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com

Last week, we had a heartfelt conversation with Travis and Mark Macy about their inspiring father-son journey of perseverance in the face of immense hardship. Both lifelong athletes, they refused to let Mark's Alzheimer's diagnosis hinder their passion for endurance competitions. In 2019, they made the courageous decision to participate in the World's Toughest Race—a grueling seven-day, 400-mile marathon involving trekking, climbing, biking, and paddling through the jungle—for one final race together. Father and son endurance athletes, Mark and Travis Macy, discuss their greatest challenge yet: the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Today, I have two special guests, Travis, and Mark Macy. They have joined me to discuss their new book, One Mile at a Time. It is a chronicle of Mark Macy'sjourney with his family after an early diagnosis of Alzheimer's at age 60. Mark or Mace, as his endurance friends call him was a successful practicing attorney at the time of his diagnosis. He has been doing ultra-endurance events for 30 years including the Leadville 100-mile race and many Eco challenge races since the 1980s. The Eco challenge races are stage races that occur over the course of 10 days or more covering over 400 miles by rafting, mountain biking, hiking through jungles, and climbing as a team while navigating through those areas with a compass and map. There are many forms of dementia with Alzheimer's comprising the majority. The diagnosis used to be made after autopsy in patients with memory loss. Now MRI scans can distinguish the formation of beta amyloid proteins and Tau proteins in the specific areas of the brain. Other forms of dementia include those do to microvascular disease, degeneration of specific areas of the brains such as the hippocampus, or the frontotemporal regions. Many dementias are multifactorial, and Parkinson's disease can progress to dementia as well. Most of the treatments to date slow the progression at best and are aimed at the abnormal amyloid and tau proteins. However, new research is pointing in the direction of a metabolic component involving the mitochondria. Just as in diabetes, the ability of the brain to use glucose and process lactate seems to be impaired in many cases. To me the metabolic component gives great hope to the prevention of Alzheimer's and dementia through lifestyle changes such as exercise and nutrition. We will discuss these topics and more. Here is an excerpt from the audiobook, A Mile At a Time with Travis and Mark Macy. Below is the synopsis from Penguin Random House: In October 2018, Mark “Mace” Macy, sixty-four years old, was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Mace had spent thirty years competing in Colorado and around the world in ultra-endurance competitions and is one of the few people who have finished all eight Eco-Challenge events. Once diagnosed, Mace feared losing endurance, strength, and independence. Mace's son Travis, also a professional endurance athlete, also struggled to see his father battling the disease. In 2019 they decided to participate in World's Toughest Race—a seven-day, grueling 400-mile marathon of trekking, climbing, biking, and paddling through the jungle—for one final race together. Weaving excerpts from Mace's passionate personal journals alongside a first-person narrative by Travis, A Mile at a Time tells the story of this incredible journey and what both father and son learned along the way. A powerful story about living—and thriving—with a disease that impacts nearly six million Americans. This timely, and deeply moving father-son adventure sheds light on the hard truths of this disease while giving readers hope of all that still can be achieved. It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

Get ready for a super-exciting and motivational episode with legends of ultraendurance racing, Mark Macy, known to many as Mace, and his son Travis. Mace is an adventure athlete extraordinaire, including competing in every one of the Eco-Challenges during its original iteration from 1995 to 2002. I would take up an entire podcast if I were to read off all of Travis' racing honors. He set the record for the Leadman, which comprises the Leadville Marathon, 10K, 50-mile bike, 50-mile run, 100-mile bike, and 100-mile run. Podiumed the Adventure Running World Championships spread out over 5 to 8 days including running, mountain biking, skiing, winter mountaineering, orienteering, ocean sailing, canyoneering, and spelunking. The Wulong Mountain Quest and Ordos Adventure Challenge: 5-day stage races in China through ancient villages, rice paddies, limestone canyons, caves, cities, deserts, and mountains. Two podium finishes at Primal Quest, America's top adventure race. He completed the 24 Hours of Moab and 24 Hours of Leadville, non-stop mountain bike races on difficult terrain. The Rock and Ice Ultra, a week-long, self-supported winter journey through the Canadian Arctic on foot and on snowshoe. If that's not exhausting enough, Travis is involved in so many areas it's mind-boggling. He penned a book called, “The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life,” and produces a monthly newsletter to supplement the lessons he teaches in it. He runs Macy Endurance Coaching to help athletes achieve their goals, works with Team U, an intercollegiate fundraising endurance team dedicated to improving global health and alleviating poverty. He hosts the Travis Macy Show podcast, which I highly recommend you find and listen to. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that he's also gotten into Colorado's official outdoor sport of pack burro racing. We are far from done here. Travis is now helping Mace battle early-onset Alzheimer's. As you might guess, that doesn't mean either one of them is slowing down. When first diagnosed, Mace wrote into a spiral notebook, “My name is Mark Macy, I am 56 years old and today I was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. My doctor told me to get my affairs in order and not spend time worrying about this diagnosis. He urged me to take vacations instead, maybe go on a cruise with my wife Pammy. I told him the diagnosis was bull.” Macy subsequently wrote: “Then my wife reminded me that I am 65 not 56, so maybe the diagnosis isn't completely bull.” Later he added, “I finished day one of my Alzheimer's diagnosis with a significant decision: I didn't cause this disease. I'm not embarrassed to be one of many who has it. Instead of hiding from it, I'm going to share my story with anyone who wants to listen. My family and I are dedicated to fighting this horrible disease that kills people all over the world.” Not surprisingly, Mace and Travis competed on the same team in the re-boot of the Eco-Challenge in the compelling World's Toughest Race Fiji broadcast on Prime Video hosted by Bear Grylls. Why stop there? The Macys have a new book chronicling this journey titled, “A Mile at a Time: A father and son's inspiring Alzheimer's journey of love, adventure, and hope." They are also just super-nice and engaging people. But when you hear Mace say that he's going to beat Alzheimer's, it's not a stretch at all to believe him.Next book, "A Mile at a Time: A father and son's inspiring Alzheimer's journey of love, adventure, and hope” is now available for pre-order on AmazonMark MacyInstagram @mmacy146Travis Macytravismacy.comtravis.macy@gmail.comFacebook Travis MacyInstagram and Twitter @travismacyLinkedIn linkedin.com/in/travis-macy-92607633Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
- http://www.spiritfaces.com/ To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv *** AND NOW *** The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.com The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com

Grit, Guts and Determination: The Leadville Race Series Podcast
Welcome to this episode of Grit, Guts and Determination, The Leadville Race Series Podcast, a leading authority on all things Leadville. Host Cole Chlouber takes us on a story-telling journey of the 39 year rich history of this race. Listen in as they provide tips, tricks, and stories from the Leadville members. In today's episode we meet Travis and Mark Macy, who you may know from the Prime series covering the Eco-Challenge. Mark is also one of Leadville's early 100 mile runners and his son, Travis, has followed in his dad's footsteps. To begin, we hear from both Mark and Travis about how Leadville found them. Mark first heard about Leadville in 1988, and participated in their first ever 100-miler. Travis shares just a few of the great memories Leadville has provided him and his family with over the years. Travis has done the bike 5 times, first in 2006 when he finished in 12th place. As the race grew more and more popular, it became more difficult to place in the top. During Mark's first bike race, he recalls having no clue what to expect. The conversation then shifts to discussing adventure racing and Travis and Mark's appearance on the Amazon Prime Eco-Challenge series. It was in Moab, Utah that Mark was first introduced to adventure racing. The challenge hadn't happened since 2002, and rumors began circulating that the show was making a return in 2018. After long discussions, Travis and Mark decided to apply. They were accepted, and were able to race alongside a great team. Even though they didn't win in the end, the experience was one they wouldn't trade for the world. Mark has been very open about his diagnosis with Alzheimer's disease. Although Alzheimer's is a difficult and heartbreaking thing, Mark wants those impacted by it to see him living a fine and happy life now. He even participated in the Leadville race a few months back, and has no plans to stop anytime soon. Many people with Alzheimers are worried and scared, but Mark urges them to continue doing what they need to do and focus on what makes you happy today. No matter what it is that's important to you, don't give up on it. Then, Travis shares his admiration for his father, who has always prioritized helping others rather than getting himself to the finish line. As the episode wraps up, Travis stresses the importance of being prepared to handle the curveballs life will present you with regardless of what you're preparing for. For those hoping to make it to the Leadville starting line next summer, the most important thing is to keep on going. No matter how hard it is, you have to stick with it if you want to finish. Thanks for joining! Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe.

He has also kept busy spreading the word about ITC through books, interviews, Powerpoint presentations, TV specials, documentaries, and a massive ITC website, www.worlditc.org, mastered by his good friend and ITC colleague Rolf Ehrhardt of Ratingen, Germany. - http://www.spiritfaces.com/ listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com
This week on the pod we are joined by Travis Macy. Travis is a dad to two, the host of the podcast, the Travis Macy Show, an author, endurance coach, all around badass endurance athlete and a big fan of Burro Racing. We mixed things up this week a bit on the show. We are hosting the first half of the conversation here at Wake. Dad. Drink. Repeat. After you listen to it, you can head over to The Travis Macy Show to hear the second half of the conversation. Be sure to subscribe to Travis' show while you are at it!I can't thank Travis enough for joining me on the pod this week. We had a great conversation about everything from family and illness, to the importance of support networks, burro races, perseverance, the challenges of adjusting to new roles and much more. It was a true pleasure to talk with him about his dad, Mark Macy, and hear about their relationship. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Marshall Ulrich is an endurance athlete and ultrarunning legend with over 130 ultra finishes. He recently crossed Death Valley for the 30th time on foot in February when he set out to raise money in honor of his friend and teammate, Mark Macy. Macy is a long-time friend and recently competed on Amazon's World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji with his son, Travis. Ulrich's team, The Stray Dogs also competed alongside the Macy's during the adventure race. Eco-Challenge Team Stray Dogs originally included both Ulrich and Macy until Macy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2018. Scotty talks to Ulrich about his recent Death Valley crossing to Mount Whitney ascent to the 14,508-foot summit which raised over $14,508 for the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Mark Macy. They also discuss how Ulrich and Macy's friendship formed around adventure racing in the early 90s, as well as Macy's Alzheimer's diagnosis and his resilience while battling the disease over the past three years. When Mark Macy was reluctantly pulled in to race the very first Eco-Challenge ( https://ecochallenge.com/ ) back in 1995 by a friend, he had no idea what was about to happen and how it would shape his life forever. That first haphazard attempt at adventure racing began a lifelong pursuit of mastering multi-day adventures, competing in every Eco-Challenge that followed, and accumulating wins and awards from races in every corner of the globe. Having watched his father compete in these epic events, it was no surprise that Travis not only followed but excelled in his father’s footsteps. Since those early days, Travis has made quite the name for himself in the adventure/ultra racing community and even authored The Ultra Mindset: An Endurance Champion's 8 Core Principles for Success in Business, Sports, and Life ( http://www.travismacy.com/book ). Unfortunately, Mark was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years back, but that hasn’t stopped the two from doing amazing things together. In fact, the father/son duo was able to compete in the 2019 resurgence of the Eco-Challenge, which a documentary was made in 2020. You can watch World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji ( https://www.amazon.com/Worlds-Toughest-Race-Eco-Challenge-Fiji-Season/dp/B08BB8S8FJ ) on Amazon where Travis and Mark are prominently featured.
