This week Dave and Joe, Chasing Tomorrow podcast co-show hosts, have the pleasure of talking to Robbie Balenger, known as the vegan ultra-runner. In 2019 Robbie ran 3,175 miles across the US in just 75 days in order to promote the benefits of a plant-based diet. In March 2021, he set a new record for The Central Park loop challenge, where he ran 16 loops smashing the previous record of 11 loops. And he just finished the Colorado Crush (named by Robbie) 63 days, 1,176 miles, 308,981 ft of gain, including the entire Colorado Trail summiting all 58 peaks over 14,000 feet, and finished with the Leadville 100, quite the incredible summer, for sure!
Many have attempted the brutal 3,000+ mile transcontinental run across the U.S. Few have completed it. And even fewer have crushed it with the style and swagger of today's guest William Goodge, who ran from Los Angeles to New York in a blazing 55 days and somehow made it look fun. His endurance resume also includes running 50 marathons in 50 days, circumnavigating Lake Cuomo, Italy, and running from Land's End to John O'Groats—all to raise funds for cancer research in honor of his mother. What I find most compelling about Will isn't just his athletic accomplishments and the mission behind them. It's that he's actively defying the archetype of how ultrarunners should look and behave with an infectious energy and unique style that is completely his own. A former model sporting a muscled physique uncommon among endurance athletes, Will much prefers Paris Fashion Week and high tea at Claridge's to camping. He's keen to share his skincare routine with you and isn't afraid to rock a Prada man purse. He cuts a different pose and has positioned himself as a powerful example to others who live outside the ultra bubble as to what's possible in terms of manifesting potential. Today we dive into Will's journey, motivations, big achievements, and lessons learned from running across the states—including the ins and outs of the controversy that swirled around his transcontinental run. We also discuss his close friendship with podcast alum Robbie Balenger, the importance of diversifying the ultra-running community, and the magic that happens when you redefine your possible. Will is an absolute delight. I loved getting to know him—and I know you will too. Hello and welcome back to the big run. Today's guest is Robbie Balenger. A man not adverse to extreme challenges, his list of multi-stage ultra efforts reads long. There are iconic races and unusual challenges such as loops around central park and outlasting a Tesla. Most recently a solo Speed Project effort saw him come in second in that iconic event. Still, he's kept the momentum up and switched to crewing for another epic challenge to support Will Goodge as runs across America. An experience he is well versed in having done the challenge himself back in 2019. Robbie caught up with us a few days ago in the early stages of the effort in Barstow California doing Laundry for the crew - oh the glamour... This week we are sitting down and chatting with the absolutely incredible athlete Robbie Balenger!!! In 2021, Robbie completed the Colorado Crush, a challenge he created which consisted of running all the events in Leadville (marathon, 50 miler and 100 miler) along with running the entire Colorado Trail and summiting all of the 14ers all in one summer. It is a mind blowing and incredibly hard accomplishment! Robbie and filmmaker Reece Robinson were able to capture all the ups and downs with their excellent film called "Colorado Crush" on their channel "The Audacious Report" (where our film will appear in a few weeks!) In this episode we talk all about that challenge. How did Robbie scare a bear away using the sultry voice of Rod Stewart? In what ways has his view on masculinity changed by taking on giant endurance challenges? What has he discovered by taking on the filmmaking project "Audacious Report" with Reece and what plans do they have for the future of their channel? Truly hope you all enjoy this episode!! It was quite the honor to chat with such an amazing dude!!
Oz Pearlman, an America's Got Talent Finalist and award-winning mentalist, is also a world-class ultra distance runner. On August 5, 2022, Oz set a new record running across the entire length of Long Island, New York - 128.5 miles! - in under 22 hours. A dazzling 9:59 minutes per mile average pace. Oz and Robbie discuss the run, the documentary film made about it, and Oz's tricks for cultivating a positive mindset in the competitive world of ultra-distance racing. Oz is a consummate performer on stage, on television, and when he's in his running shoes. Enjoy this fun conversation, watch the accompanying film, and prepare to have your minds blown. Endurance News: Eliud Kipchoge Breaks Marathon WORLD RECORD In Berlin CNN Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge broke his own world record, lowering the mark to 2:01:09, as he powered to victory at the Berlin Marathon on Sunday. Shaving 30 seconds off the record he set at the same event four years ago, Kipchoge set a pace that no one could match over the entire 26.2 miles and secured his 15th career marathon win out of just 17 starts. Ethiopia's Andamlak Belihu and defending champion Guye Adola stayed with the 37-year-old for the first half of the race but dropped away as Kipchoge pressed on for victory and eventually crossed the finish line opposite the Brandenburg Gate alone. Double Olympic champion Kipchoge became the first athlete to run a marathon distance in under two hours in Vienna in 2019 but this was not recognized as an official world record since it was set with a team of rotating pacemakers and not in open competition. For this official record, Kipchoge started fast, setting a 10km time split of just 28min 23sec and reaching the halfway mark in under an hour. Adola matched him step for step throughout the opening ten kilometers but only Belihu could remain with Kipchoge as the race crossed halfway. After 25km, Kipchoge began to pull away from Belihu too, and though his blistering pace slowed slightly, he remained comfortably ahead of the world record all the way to the line. His compatriot Mark Korir finished more than four minutes afterwards, in 2:05:58, to take second place while Ethiopia's Tadu Abate completed the podium with a time of 2:06:28. In the women's race, Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa set a course record and took the win in 2:15:37, the third fastest time in history and 18 minutes faster than her previous personal best. Starting just her second marathon after making the switch from the 800m, Assefa ran 1:08:13 to remain with the pack for the first half of the race, before she recorded a negative split of 1:07:25 to distance the rest of the field. Rosemary Wanjiru of Kenya finished second with a time of 2:18:00, while Ethiopia's Tigist Abayechew finished three seconds later in third place. But not everyone is happy about the return of the race and its expansion – specifically, the people who call Kona home. “We have a lot of people who are excited because they love Ironman, but also a lot of people who do their best to avoid the race,” says Skye Ombac, a lifelong Kona resident and triathlete who will be racing in this year's event. “This year, it just feels twice as difficult to coexist with the two-day format and twice the amount of athletes.” The relationship between Kona and Ironman is a complicated one. Certainly, tourism is a large part of the island's economy, and during the COVID pandemic, a decline in travel meant a loss for most residents. Many businesses closed, and hotels and restaurants operated at a fraction of their capacity. When local authorities issued shutdown orders, Hawaii unemployment levels rose to those not seen since the Great Depression, topping out at 25 percent. But even though tourism has resumed, the island still hasn't fully recovered. Many restaurants and hotels are understaffed, as are grocery stores and gas stations. But that doesn't necessarily mean locals are excited about the return of tourism, either. According to a recent state-commissioned survey, 67% of Hawaii residents agreed that their island is “being run for tourists at the expense of local people,” and only 39% agreed tourism is “mostly positive.” Resident dissatisfaction with tourists is multifaceted: The overwhelming majority (92%) of locals felt visitors were not educated enough on protecting Hawaii's natural environment and local resources; other factors include the impact of the vacation rental industry and ignorance of the residents' quality of life. Add the extra hassles that come with hosting a two-day Ironman event, and these feelings become even stronger. RELATED: How Is Ironman Going to Pull off Two Days of Racing in Kona? Triathletes on a training ride for the Ironman World Champs in Kona Triathletes train on the Queen K Highway ahead of the race. (Photo: Oliver Baker) Ironman: Not your average tourist Though Ironman has gained support from local officials and many residents, this support is not unanimous, and it's certainly not without condition. Ironman tourists aren't your typical island visitors, who tend to stick to their timeshares and carefully-managed tours; they take over a host city completely, riding their bikes on the busiest roads, taking bathroom breaks on the side of sacred trails, and buying up all the bananas and bottled water at the grocery store. On Nextdoor, a neighborhood-based social media app, the debate between local residents ping-pongs between cheering the $30 million economic impact of the race and wondering if it's really worth the cost. Some posters shared that the road closures during two days of racing also forced their businesses to close, resulting in a loss of two days' worth of income. Others expressed concern for the environmental impact of the race, from the large amounts of trash left on the road by athletes to the use of non-reef safe sunscreens when swimming in the ocean. “This event has far outgrown the venue,” wrote one Nextdoor poster. “I respect the idea of Ironman and the individual athlete, but this has gotten out of hand. It is time for a new, larger venue to be found for these folks to do their thing.” “The aloha we all had for this event has left the island,” wrote another. “Time for a change.” “People get annoyed with cyclists taking up lanes on the road, riding on roads that are not bike friendly, not stopping at stop signs, leaving trash on the side of the road, bringing banned sunscreens to the island,” says Sierra Ponthier, a Kona resident and triathlete. “They see Ironman triathletes as selfish and just coming here to use the island for themselves while inconveniencing locals who need to get to work, to school, to family. This one hurts to hear, because as a triathlete myself, I know not all triathletes are like this, but it's a common perception of residents here.” “Kona is a small community, and we will have a difficult time handling twice as many athletes,” Ombac says. “There are 2,500 extra athletes coming in this year compared to a normal Ironman year. We are still recovering from COVID, businesses are understaffed and don't have the resources to handle the influx of people. Because we are racing on a Thursday, a work day, many business will be losing a ton of money and many community members are unable to get to work. This is creating a huge headache for many people.” Sea Otter Europe draws nearly 60'000 for 6th edition Tuesday, 27 September 2022 Simon Cox The most popular Sea Otter Europe ever, with a record attendance for public and exhibitors, cements its reputation as the meeting point between the Cycling Industry and cycling enthusiasts. Nearly 60,000 visitors filled the festival site for 3 intense days of racing, product presentations, and demo-bike testing. If you want to ride a demo bike there's surely no better place, be that for MTB, Road, or Gravel bikes. This year also so a growth in ‘cycling as transport' products on display, and available to test ride. The expansion of the expo area has made it possible to comfortably cope with the 30% growth of exhibitor brands, with a total of 350 international companies that have displayed their products at more than 220 stands of bicycles, electric bikes, accessories and technology applied to cycling. The response to the competitive calendar was also a strong one, with more than 4,000 cyclists taking part in the fifteen races that were organised, for amateurs and for world champions, Olympic medallists and elite athletes, both male and female, in all kinds of cycling. Once again, the demo-bike opportunity proved to be one of the most attractive elements of Sea Otter Europe. 30 participating brands had all the models on offer, with more than 3,000 trips to the demo-bike circuits designed specifically for this purpose. New urban routes created this year also made it possible to experience a variety of family and urban bikes, ridden around the festival, and in the streets of the centre of Girona. With the conclusion of the most popular edition of this cycling festival to date, the team at Sea Otter Europe has already begun work on the next one, to be held again in Girona and the Costa Brava from 22 to 24 September 2023. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Robbie Balenger. Robbie is a plant-based ultra-endurance athlete, with achievements including a run across the United States and a feat he dubbed the Colorado Crush which involves hiking the 485-mile Colorado Trail, summiting all 58 of Colorado's 14,000-ft peaks, and running the Leadville Trail Series- the marathon, the-50 mile race, and the 100-mile race...all of this in the span of 63 days! We of course go in-depth about these endurance undertakings, including how he manages his diet, his recovery, the highlights and lowlights from these adventures, the role his crew plays, and much more. You will walk away from this one feeling either very inspired or very lazy- and quite likely both. We wrap the show with a triple crown of trees, some promising news on the Lyme disease vaccine front, we get another update from MG, and we share some of our favorite shorter thru-hikes for a listener. Robbie Balenger ran a staggering 242 miles in three days, covering more distance than an electric vehicle on a single charge.
It's taken a bit to process everything from my Leadville Trail 100. The race for me ended at Twin Lakes, mile 40. My plan to fuel and hydrate better by going out at a conservative pace was obviously too slow and might have worked better had I not expended so much mental and physical energy dealing with a lighting system that wasn't bright enough and my dicey depth perception and balance that led me to being too cautious navigating the rockier, uneven trail sections. I was moving ok but with a thin margin for error when my left hamstring cramped ¼ mile from Halfpipe aid station, mile 33. Despite eating salted mashed potatoes, salted watermelon, and a banana, the hammy continued to cramp up for the next 2-3 runnable miles. I got 250 mg. of salt from a fellow runner that immediately helped, but I'd lost too much time. I bombed down into Twin in a desperate attempt to beat the cutoff and have a shot at Hope Pass, but missed by about 15 minutes.Aside from the disappointment, I'm left with a few bright spots. I proudly represented Team Leadville and Warriors Ascent, which is a great organization supporting veterans experiencing PTS. I also had an amazing crew led by Brian Farrington, who had also paced me to the finish in 2015. My sister Ellen and nephew Matthew came out from Charlotte, NC to experience the magic of Leadville for the first time. Gabby Penaflor, who paced me to the finish in 2010, flew out last-minute from KC, and was responsible for the giant duck and other decorstions on top of the crew vehicle for easy spotting. Super appreciate 19-year old upcoming ultrarunning star Josh Taylor being there the whole time. Huge thanks as well to long-time supporters and all-around nice people Shelley, Scott, and Shane Miller. It's so amazing having all of those folks ready to give up their weekend while this old guy pursues his dreams in the mountains and tries to inspire younger folks to follow in my footsteps.Congrats to all of the finishers! There is seriously not much more inspiring than being at the Leadville finish line during the last two hours and seeing beaten-up warriors trudging the last of their 100 miles with their families and friends in tow. It was also cool seeing well-known runners like Hellah Sidibe and Harvey Lewis totally out of their elements and acknowledging what a beast the Leadville course is, yet still finding ways to get to the line. It was also inspiring to see Tyler Andrews, who's taken me on amazing journeys in South America, bravely fighting in obvious distress to a fourth-place finish. Finally, what a special treat getting to spend time with the amazing Simone Brick, and conversing with legends Ken Chlouber, Merilee Maupin, Cole Chlouber, and Travis and Mark Macy, joking around with the cutoff king and queen Mike and Sandy Monaghan as they followed me around, and chatting with some of the sport's luminaries like Robbie Balenger, Scott Jurek, Courtney Dauwalter, Hellah, Harvey, and more. And seeing tons of old friends along the course. I've got some things to adjust and then I'll be back!Bill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
For me, the transition to eating plant-based wasn't a hard choice. As opposed to some athletes who do it for performance-related reasons, I've become increasingly fed up with the food industry, particularly factory farming. Without going into a long diatribe here, we kill billions of living, breathing, intelligent animals, funded to a large extent by the government – through industry promoters who lobby for subsidies like the Beef Council, the Poultry Council, the Pork Council, the Dairy Council, etc. – that has then exacerbated health issues like diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and other morbidities that were magnified during the pandemic. And then the government has to lay out larger sums of money to help people to afford the health care they need to fight these ailments. Then we have a planet that is inching onto the edge of not being able to feed itself as there is less farmland and more crop failures as climate change worsens, which the factory farming industry contributes increasingly to that problem, all while the world population grows and grows and there are more mouths to feed. Without depressing you further, it seemed like a logical choice for me to spare the lives of a few animals, which won't change the world, but maybe it will totally change it for just a few of them who don't get slaughtered. Funny thing is, after many years of injuries and way too many surgeries, I do seem to be training better than I have in a long time. Not sure if there's a connection, but I'm sticking with this lifestyle. My doctor has even pointed out better health metrics during my past couple of physicals. I can also see this impressive starter list of vegan athletes whose names you likely know, like Kyrie Irving and Chris Paul in the NBA, Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, incredible ultrarunners like Scott Jurek, Robbie Balenger, and Harvey Lewis, nine-time Olympic track medalist Carl Lewis, MMA star Ronda Rousey, and tennis great Venus Williams. My challenge has been that I was raised like most guys knowing how to artfully use a grill to cook. In Colorado, we barbeque outdoors in almost any weather. In our shorts. But my propane tank is lasting a lot longer now, and frankly, my biggest struggle is finding enough variety in what I eat. I love salads, but I'm not up for them every day. Enter Kathy Davis. She has a site called VegInspired that offers a ton of recipes and information geared toward aspiring and existing plant-based eaters. What's great is how Kathy breaks through the barriers and makes it so easy to really make plant-based eating your lifestyle. She's so committed that she and her husband sold their house and travel the country in an RV on something of a plant-based eating road trip, showing how doable it is even on the road. Kathy particularly emphasizes eating whole, unprocessed foods after encountering an interesting twist at the start of her journey. Despite eating plant-based, she gained dozens of pounds because she was eating what David always called vegan junk food. You commonly see them now: Beyond and Impossible Burgers, fake chicken nuggets, fake deli meats, even fake bacon. But these are often highly-processed, sometimes with high amounts of sodium, sugar, and other questionable additives. I'm not saying they're all bad, and I think most are still better than eating animal products, but I'd still point you toward more whole, unprocessed foods like Kathy does. You can join her journey with the coaching she offers, through her Website recipes and blogs, and with the free meal planner she is giving to WASP listeners, which frankly is a Godsend for someone like me to save me from eating salads every day. She's really engaging, so I hope you enjoy this conversation and gain some tips that help you live healthier, and please take advantage of her terrific meal planner.Meal planner:www.VegInspired.com/podcastKathy Daviswww.VegInspired.comFacebook and YouTube VegInspired

After discovering running in his 30's, ultra-endurance athlete Robbie Balenger became obsessed with the power of human endurance and quickly found that he needed challenges far exceeding standard ultramarathons to test his limits. So, he started creating his own. Since then, Robbie has run across America, completed the “Colorado Crush,” and recently outran a Tesla. Imagine saying this to a friend with a Tesla: “Drive at 65 mph until your battery dies. I'll run that far in 72 hours.” That's essentially what Robbie Balenger did in April of 2022, and his effort made global headlines, because the target distance was 242 miles. He tells Spanny how he'd built up the credibility and support for the attempt, with a record that included running across the U.S in 75 days (43 miles per day). And this was after only 8 years as a serious runner. Why does Robbie do this? Listen for his explanation of running as the inverse of drugs. ... Sometimes, it takes more than an organized ultra race to push our limits. And that means finding ways to set our own challenges to really see what we're made of. For today's guest, that means running across America, completing the Colorado Crush (running the Leadville Marathon, Leadville 50 miler, Leadville 100, running the entire Colorado Trail, and climbing every 14er in Colorado in a span of ONLY a few months), and running farther than how far a Tesla can go on full-charge. Robbie Ballenger is the man who has completed all of those challenges. Robbie Balenger is an ultra-endurance athlete who has completed multiple feats of physical and mental accomplishment during his athletic career, and is a world record holder. He is well-known for completing these challenges all on a plant-based diet, and through an innovative sleep technology called NuCalm. And on top of that, he has a mindset and drive like no other, always trying to find the edge of his limits, and then looking to see how he can break through them. Robbie has also been featured on the Rich Roll Podcast, and The Bare Performance Podcast. In this episode, Robbie talks about the real secrets to his incredible endurance accomplishment, tips that anyone can use to complete their own endurance challenges, and why a plant-based diet and NuCalm has been so crucial to his success. Stephens is the team's pilot and discusses his hopes for the Beijing Games, what he makes of his team being compared to the 1988 team, which inspired the film Cool Runnings and who would play him in the movie if they made a sequel. Vegan endurance runner Robbie Balenger joins us to discuss pushing his body to its limits while maintaining a plant-based diet, his spiritual connection to running and to reflect on some of the challenges he has completed. Balenger holds the record for most finished laps around Central Park and has previously completed a transcontinental run across America, averaging 43 miles per day across the 75 day run. And we are live at the Australian Open tennis and at Goodison Park ahead of Everton's first game since they sacked manager Rafa Benitez.

To Celebrate The Victories, It Had to Get Dark at Some Point - Robbie Balenger Team, today we have Robbie Balenger, one of the elite plant-based athletes in the space, on the show today. Robbie started running at 29, so well into his life, and decided to see how far he could go with it. Robbie is a plant-based, ultra-endurance athlete who has completed the Trans-con which involved a 3,175-mile transcontinental run starting in Huntington Beach, CA, and ending in Central Park, NYC. This involved 14 states and an average of 43 miles a day for 75 days. He also completed the insane Colorado Crush which incorporates the Leadville Trail Marathon, The Leadville Silver Rush 50-miler, and the Leadville Trail 100-miler. Robbie got in 1,200 miles and more than 300,000 feet of elevation gain over 63 days. And team, these are just two of three epic challenges he has finished so far! Robbie also completed the Central Park Loop challenge which consists of running the most number of loops around Central Park in NYC during the park's opening hours of 6am to 1am the next day. Robbie got in 16 full loops around the park with almost an hour to spare, breaking the previous record of 11 loops. These are incredible accomplishments, however, this lifestyle that Robbie lives in is relatively new to him. In today's episode, we discuss Robbie's childhood, his experience as a successful restauranteur, and his gradual transition into a plant-based ultra-endurance athlete paving the way for others in the space. We specifically discuss:How to set clear boundaries to prevent burnoutSetting boundaries with selfHow to be selfish in a way that improves your lifeThe pain plateau - How to push through the pain barrier Connect with Robbie below:Robbie's InstagramRobbie's Website

As you know, when I'm not running in the Leadville Trail 100, I work at the Winfield aid station at mile 50. That's where I had a very brief encounter with plant-based endurance runner Robbie Balenger, who was completing his summer-long Colorado Crush. Robbie had previously run the Leadville Marathon as well as the Silver Rush 50-mile. I've had runners who don't run ultras gasp, wow, he did all that? Which kind of cracks me up because lots of people have done that, including me. However, between the marathon and the Silver Rush 50, Robbie also ran the entire 587-mile Colorado Trail in 11 days. And in-between the Silver Rush and the LT100, Robbie climbed all of the Fourteeners, the 58 14,000 peaks in the Colorado Rockies. Now that's worth gasping over! Rather than put his feet up and light up a cigar, Robbie then headed over to England to help friend William Goodge complete 48 marathons, one in each county in England, in 30 days. What struck me about Robbie at Winfield was that despite the fact he had to have been massively tired, and like most race competitors, needed to get out of the aid station as quickly as possible, he graciously posed for selfies with aid station volunteers. Robbie lives right here in Denver, so I'm very grateful he stopped by the Hive to chat. His generosity and good nature comes through in this episode. He was driving his very cool wrapped van that he used on his earlier cross-country run. In addition to that feat, Robbie this March set the FKT for running the looped road in New York's Central Park during its open hours from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., 16 laps and almost 100 miles in total. I'm personally just amazed that he spent that much time in Central Park without getting mugged at least three times! Maybe muggers don't like to touch vegans. Yes, he does all of this as a plant-based athlete, so listen along if this intrigues you.Robbie Balengerwww.robbiebalenger.comFacebook Robbie BalengerInstagram @robbiebalengerTwitter @robbiebalengerBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor
“I started to like running more than I liked being at the bar, and it's really one or the other with that.” Welcome everyone to episode Twenty-Two of the “It Matters To Me Podcast”! I'm your host, Adam Casey, and today my guest is Robbie Balenger, a professional ultra-runner whose accomplishments such as a run across America and breaking the world record for running the most number of loops around Central Park in New York City are almost too impressive to list. Robbie explains how he evolved into the phenomenal runner he is today from an unlikely childhood where he was often a mischievous kid who played football and counter to his current athletic demands, was an offensive lineman. He also talks about how the first real intro to running came later in life when he was living in Austin, TX, and his girlfriend invited him on a run. That moment became a catalyst for him to leave behind his hard-partying lifestyle and take his health and fitness much more seriously. Most notably was transitioning to a plant-based diet over the years out of personal and environmental concerns. We then get into his most recent feat, something called the ‘Colorado Crush', an adventure that included the Leadville Trail Marathon, traversing The Colorado Trail (485 miles in 11.5 days), the Leadville Silver Rush 50-miler, summiting all 58 peaks over 14K feet in Colorado, and The Leadville Trail 100-miler in just a measly 63 days. Robbie details how the motivation to do the Colorado Crush was born out of a necessity to reconnect with his active personality during a time when the COVID pandemic was forcing him and his job to become more sedentary. This one's filled with some great advice about how to handle a race or big physical event once it's over and the importance of finding a way to always be active. Our conversation does get into the mental health side of ultra-running a little bit more than some other episodes, but I didn't want to shy away from that topic because I sincerely think it's important those discussions are out in the public view. Robbie was someone I've been hoping to have on the show for a while and am so thankful he was able to open up the way he did. Yet another irrevocably ‘good dude' who couldn't have been more gracious and friendly.
Robbie Balenger is a plant-based ultra-endurance athlete obsessed with finding sustainable motion through space and time. This obsession leads Robbie to seek out mammoth athletic projects that span weeks and months. By exploring recovery techniques and honing diet choices, Robbie is investigating how he can keep going forever.

How do you stay committed to your goals when sh*t gets hard? There's an entire industry built on answering this question—and a litany of #lifehacks meant to assuage intolerance for hard work and discipline. But if you ask today's guest, he'll tell you the answer is found in consistently doing what you feel called to do—and doing it for something greater than yourself. It's about making friendships along the way. And seeing the process of pursuing your dreams as a privilege—not just a self-serving opportunity.Meet Hellah Sidibe.Born in Mali, Hellah emigrated from to the States from West Africa when he was a teen, becoming a professional soccer player and now, a U.S. citizen and the first Black person to ever run 3,000 miles across America. It's a truly extraordinary feat eclipsed only by his incredibly inspirational positive vibe and another noteworthy accomplishment: a 4+ year run streak.Hellah has run every single day, without missing one single day, for over 1500+ days in a row.I first came across Hellah's story when my friend Robbie Balenger joined Hellah for a segment of his transcontinental run through the Navajo Nation. Captivated by Robbie's Instagram Stories documenting the experience, I was immediately taken by Hellah's energy. I followed his journey through the conclusion of his run in New York City, and immediately got to work trying to book him here as soon as I could. And so, here we are.We talk running of course, but this conversation is about so much more. It's about reimagining your own personal potential. It's about chasing dreams, taking risks, putting yourself out there, and of course, what it takes to accomplish seemingly outlandish goals. We also discuss Hellah's decision to go plant-based. The impact this lifestyle has had on his running and, beyond that, his broader awareness. In addition, we talk about his work with Soles4Souls, a non-profit that provides repurposed shoes to empower the developing world. We discuss his relationship with social media, his growing YouTube presence, and the impact Casey Neistat has had on how he shares his personal perspective online. But mostly, this is about mindset. It's about living with intention—and the beauty of sharing the journey to self-actualization unfiltered, in real-time.To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Hellah's energy is infectious. It rubbed off on me. This episode was brought to you by our friends at Velofix. DM @velofixquebec on IG to get your exclusive LE RUN DOWN PROMO CODE and receive 15% OFF your next tune up. On this episode of Le Run Down I had a great chat with plant-based Ultra Endurance Athlete, Robbie Balenger. Simply put, Robbie loves to run and push his limits. He's conquered the run across America in 75 days and most recently crushed the fastest known time for loops around central park in 24 hours. His accomplishments are remarkable but the message he carries about making better food choices and creating more sustainable food sources is just as incredible. Trailer - This week on the Pure Sport Project we're delighted to announce we have the amazing, the inspirational, the ultra running, Robbie Balenger. He is a guy that has ran across the whole of the USA starting in Los Angeles California and ending in Central Park New York. This venture took him 75 days, averaging 42 miles a day! He is a plant based advocate and he has so many great stories and so many great lessons that we can all tune into.
Robbie Balengar is a dedicated athlete in the running community and has ran several ultra marathons including Bandera 100k, Caballo Blanco 50, and Austin Marathon to prepare for his run across the United States of America. He ran 3175 miles from Huntington Beach California to Tavern On The Green in New York City in 75 days. Robbie did this all on a Whole Foods plant based diet with the help from his crew and the ice cream company Nadamoo who sponsored him for this event. He believes becoming vegan will make a huge impact , not just in the running community but around the world. As a 100% whole food plant based athlete , Robbie has been able to reduce inflammation in his muscles , and joints much more efficiently then an athlete who is not vegan. He would burn up to 10,000 calories in a single run everyday. Robbies meal plan consisted of 11 meals throughout the day with shakes that provided him enough calories.
This week, we’re digging into inspiration and exploring your personal limits with a major dose of true grit! In March 2019, Robbie Balenger set sail with his sneakers from Huntington Beach, California to run across America all the way to Central Park, New York in just 75 days. He was relatively new to running as well as to a PlantStrong lifestyle. So, why on earth would he do something like this? Well, as it turns out, the earth had EVERYTHING to do with it. Environmental issues, fitness, and plant-based nutrition had become so important to him that he wanted to spark more conversation and spread his message across the country. And what better way to do that than by setting the physical example for what can be done. And - spoiler alert- He DID IT! Today, we look back at this incredible “feat” and dig into his value-driven life, which has only grown stronger since his successful trip across the country just two years ago. In fact, just this past weekend, Robbie did it again! He broke the record for the most number of consecutive loops run in Central Park during open hours with 16 loops and over 100 miles. Now THAT is some PLANTSTRONG peak performance. I googled "plant based athlete roaring fork valley" and found TJ... and I sure am glad that I did! TJ is not your typical extreme outdoorsman. He is mindful, grounded, soulful, creative, restorative... and plant powered! OK - so, I might be making some generalizations about mountain athletes, but he's a super cool guy and we had a great conversation. Some highlights include... “Just because something is hard in the beginning doesn't mean it's always going to be.”Robbie BalengerImagine running an ultramarathon. It’s a huge undertaking for anyone. And a bucket list dream for many. Now imagine running an ultramarathon every day. A minimum of 40 miles, 75 days in a row. Starting in Los Angeles. Finishing in New York. A 3,200 mile transcontinental run. This is the story of Robbie Balenger.Just 6 years ago, Robbie laced up his first pair of running shoes to alleviate the stress he was experiencing managing a restaurant. A small act, that first run set in motion a chain of events that led to a passion for running long distances, followed by a purpose-driven mission promote a message — the power of a plant-based diet to fuel athletic performance. Prevent and reverse certain lifestyle maladies. Ameliorate suffering. And redress climate change. What Robbie didn't expect? The many extraordinary ways running creates community. Unites people across the economic divide. And bridges the political differences that drive us apart.I was unfamiliar with Robbie until an e-mail hit my inbox courtesy of my friend and former podcast guest, Olympic cyclist Dotsie Bausch (RRP 355). Her non-profit Switch4Good was sponsoring Robbie's attempt to cross the United States by foot. Would I be interested in helping to support their efforts? I jumped at the opportunity. On March 16, I showed up at dawn in Huntington Beach to meet Robbie for the first time and help kick off his momentous attempt.Running the first several miles alongside Robbie and a small crew of supporters, I immediately took to his earnest yet humble disposition. His passion for promoting the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. And his determination to reach New York a mere 75 days later. We struck up a friendship that day. I kept keen tabs on his progress over the following months. And made him a promise:Finish the run and you earn a seat at the podcast table. All heart, he indeed finished it. Today I honor that promise. And it’s a great story, well told. You can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the conversation streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange as much as I relished having it.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsCaldera Lab: Premium non-toxic skincare for men didn't exist – so we created it! As he shares, the juxtaposition of the various facets of life does keep him grounded and present in the world. In this conversation you get a real taste of Josh's pure heart. He is such a kind soul, and expresses his passions in many forms - from running, to writing, to speaking, and also serving through his recent start-up, WellStart Health. I hope you enjoy this one! This episode includes my live podcast discussion with Robbie Balenger (@robbiebalenger) and Jackie Howard (@veganathleteatx) that occurred in front of an audience of 40-50 people at Rogue on August 1st. Robbie ran across the US from LA to NYC, covering 3,175 miles in 75 days (45 miles per day). He did it for his plant-powered mission which we talk about extensively, but there is much more to the discussion. We cover his challenges on the journey, what he learned, and what might be next now that he has proven he can dream big and then go do it. If you would like more details on Robbie's journey, here is a Runner's World article from the day after he finished in NYC: https://www.runnersworld.com/runners-stories/a27656146/robbie-balenger-vegan-cross-country-run/
Robbie Balenger just ran across America in 75 days... and he did it on a 100% plant-based diet, getting the majority of his calories from smoothies. In today's episode, we sit down with Robbie to talk about the logistics of such a challenge, along with the highs, lows, and life lessons that came with it.

You’ve heard all the myths surrounding plant-based diets: it’s not sustainable as an athlete, or easy when you travel, or fun if you’re a foodie. Robbie Balenger is about to bust all of those myths in one 3,000-mile run across the United States. Robbie first laced up his shoes six years ago to alleviate his stress as a restaurant manager. Since then, his career and running paths have coalesced into a passion for endurance athleticism powered by plants -- and vegan ice cream. He joins us to chat about his journey to plant-based wellness, how he plans to fuel his body over the seventy-five-day excursion, and how he hopes to inspire other people to thrive while eating ethically. He hits the pavement March 15th in Huntington Beach, sponsored by Switch4Good and NadaMoo! What we discuss in this episode: - How Robbie turned to running to deal with stress. - Robbie’s journey to a plant-based diet with an ethical focus. - The motivation behind Robbie’s transcontinental attempt. - Slaying myths about travel, being a foodie, and being a plant-based athlete. - Robbie’s nutrition plan. - How Robbie suggests people transition from one lifestyle to another. In this episode I interview Hemp Daddy's brand ambassador Robbie Balenger. Robbie is a plant based endurance athlete that has run many ultra marathons. Robbie is about to embark on a transcontinental run from LA to New York. We focus on how Robbie got into running, his diet, and the logistics of a transcontinental run. You may find it interesting Robbie has only been running for six years and has done many ultra marathons.
Take our listener survey here to give feedback to the show! Robbie has done some legitimately legendary adventures. He ran across the US, has the FKT for the Central Park Loop, and even outlasted a Tesla by running farther than it could drive on a single charge. However, on today's episode we talk about something, in my opinion, that was much crazier; The Colorado Crush. In an effort to experience all the glory and magnitude that Colorado has to offer, Robbie pieced together an adventure of outright ridiculous proportions. The goal was to run the Leadville marathon in early summer, complete the nearly 500-mile Colorado Trail, run the Leadville 50-mile in mid-summer, then climb all 58 Colorado 14ers and finish with the Leadville 100-mile ultrarun, completing the Colorado Trail, the 14ers and the Leadville Trail Series in one summer. Unbelievable.
