Phil Pinti is about 18 days out from toeing the start line of the Arizona Monster 300!! Once the gun goes off, he will have a week to take on this insanely long adventure that traverses the deserts of southern Arizona. This will be it's inaugaral year and is organized by the awesome Candice Burt and Destination Trails. In this episode, we talk about his mindset a month out and his training up until this point before being joined by Randy Stephenson, Phil's crew chief for this event. We also talk about the absolutely beautiful Route 66 Ultra put on by Heather and Marshall Ulrich, which is a race I HIGHLY recommend people check out! (My experience wasn't as beautiful but that had nothing to do with this amazing community of runners and the beautiful event they put on!) Other possible titles for this episode: "What's a Macho Man....without a Randy" "From Route 66 to Badwater, Randall Stephenson...the Man for the Job" "I'm Afraid"- Philly

Tara Tulley's story is an ode to the power of resilience, determination, and self-belief. At 45 years old, she stood at the start line of a grueling 140-mile ultra-marathon—not as a runner, but as a spectator. Weighing over 250 pounds, battling the effects of POTS, and having stepped away from running for years, she made a bold promise: One year from now, I will be here, and I will run this race. What followed was a transformation like no other. In just 12 months, Tara lost 130 pounds, rewired her mindset, and rebuilt her endurance to accomplish something most would call impossible. But this is more than a story of weight loss—it's about overcoming deep struggles, defying medical diagnoses, and proving that we are far more capable than we think. In this episode, Tara shares: ✅ How she rebuilt her fitness after years away from running ✅ Overcoming POTS and ignoring the “you'll never run again” diagnosis ✅ The mental shifts that helped her stay consistent and committed ✅ How she used positive affirmations to rewire her mindset ✅ The power of finding the right mentors and support system ✅ Her experience of being overweight in society and how things changed ✅ The brutal moments of her 140-mile race—and what pushed her to finishTara's journey is proof that no matter where you start, transformation is possible. Whether you're struggling with motivation, facing a setback, or chasing a seemingly impossible goal, this episode will leave you believing that you can do it too.Resources & References

We start tonight's show off with race results and some commentary about Crazy Mountain 100, Burning River 100, Minnesota Voyager 50, Standhope 100, Never Summer 100K, Resurrection Pass 100, and Tushars Mountain Runs. We talk about Harvey Lewis's Badwater double, well, not a true double according to Marshall Ulrich but we still think it's pretty badass. Mike Wardian and Tara Dower are both doing the AT in August for charity. Tara is going for the FKT but we are not sure yet what direction she will be going. Mike is going North to South but planning on 50 days. We discuss the co-ed FKT summiting all 58 of Colorado's 14,000 peaks (14ers). This week we are joined by absolute LEGEND Marshall Ulrich!! Adventure Racing, Ultra running, Death Valley, the 7 Summits, if you name it Marshall has taken it on! He's a true adventurer by all meaning of the word, an explorer of our external world and his own internal world. He's created races, helped teach kids on expeditions, wrote a couple incredible books ("Both Feet on the Ground" and "Running on Empty"), and crossed jungles, deserts and mountains. For this episode, I brought on my friend Ray Zahab as co-host. Ray has known Marshall for years and these two have probably crossed Death Valley more times than any other human in history. They keep getting drawn back to the place and I was so excited to hear their reflections on it! A most humble, amazing human being. I'm so honored to have Marshall on the show and beyond excited to share this episode with all of you!! If you've ever run an ultramarathon, you almost certainly know the name of Marshall Ulrich. His accomplishments are unparalleled, and if I tried to list them, I'd undoubtedly leave out many. I could naturally mention his 29 official Badwater finishes in Death Valley, a race most of us would not want to tackle even once. Or that he dwarfed those finishes by continuing on to the Mt. Whitney summit, or that he once ran around the entire 425-mile perimeter of Death Valley, which we have fun talking about here. He completed the Seven Summits on his first attempt, and he set the speed record for the transcontinental run across the U.S., recounted in his great book, "Running on Empty." I could add his Stray Dogs team completed all of the Eco-Challenges, televised as The World's Toughest Race. You may have already heard about all of this, so instead let's focus on his latest endeavors, like the Route 66 Ultrarun, a 140-mile, multi-day event along that historic route in Arizona, and his support for his good friend and fellow Stray Dogs teammate Mark Macy in his inspiring battle against Alzheimer's. Marshall is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in the sport. He was an early mentor to an aspiring ultraendurance athlete named David Clark, and wrote the foreword to David's first book, "Out There, a Story of Ultrarecovery." Marshall's latest book, "Both Feet on the Ground," will inspire you to seek out your own adventures. Grit, Guts and Determination: The Leadville Race Series Podcast
The Bargo Brothers, from Episode 69, call Marshall Ulrich the "real Forrest Gump of running." And when you listen to this entire episode, you will likely agree. He ran Badwater 20 times, and set course records two years in a row. He and his team have been in every Eco Challenge Adventure Race, he ran across the US, and did a self-supported circumnavigation of Death Valley.
The statement “not many people can say” was designed for Marshall Ulrich … his running, climbing & adventure racing achievements are beyond next level, beyond epic, even legendary seems a bit weak … he’s completed 120+ ultra’s, holds the record for crossing Death Valley 20+ times, loves the gruelling 146-mile Badwater race so much that he once completed the race out-back & out-back again, a quad Badwater! … oh & he also did the race one year & promptly followed it with a death defying 425-mile trek around the perimeter of Death Valley … The boys have a blast chatting to the man that had his toenails removed as part of a bundle deal & once disowned his own foot, there’s too much goodness in this interview to list here, enjoy!
Marshall Ulrich is an endurance athlete and ultrarunning legend with over 130 ultra finishes. He recently crossed Death Valley for the 30th time on foot in February when he set out to raise money in honor of his friend and teammate, Mark Macy. Macy is a long-time friend and recently competed on Amazon's World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji with his son, Travis. Ulrich's team, The Stray Dogs also competed alongside the Macy's during the adventure race. Eco-Challenge Team Stray Dogs originally included both Ulrich and Macy until Macy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2018. Scotty talks to Ulrich about his recent Death Valley crossing to Mount Whitney ascent to the 14,508-foot summit which raised over $14,508 for the Alzheimer's Association in honor of Mark Macy. They also discuss how Ulrich and Macy's friendship formed around adventure racing in the early 90s, as well as Macy's Alzheimer's diagnosis and his resilience while battling the disease over the past three years. I can feel last week’s @vdot_o2 max week and the cold wet hike with @mandy.colleen and @adamsetser73 when doing my 500m repeats this morning. Daylight savings time messes me up in the opposite way of most and congratulations to @marshall.ulrich on the first know winter BADWATER to Whitney crossing. @youhearthatmranderson on @youtube #congestiveheartfailure @ifit @strava @altrarunning @rei @target @newtonendurance #DOMS #DST #Badwater Congratulations to Marshall Ulrich, age 69, who accomplished the first known WINTER Badwater (Death Valley) to Mt. Whitney run/climb, lowest to highest points in the lower 48 United States. The attempt in “one go” was accomplished in 6 days, 3 hours, 42 minutes and raised money for fighting Alzheimer’s. The Ultrarunning History Podcast recently told the stories of first runs across Death Valley in the early 1960s and the first Badwater to Mt. Whitney attempts in the 1970s in episodes 62 and 70. See: https://ultrarunninghistory.com/100-miler-9/ Ulrich’s first winter journey of about 144 miles was accomplished with a support crew and a companion on the climb. It took two days longer than planned due to a 20-hour break at Panamint Springs to treat a muscle issue, and the snowy Mount Whitney ascent up the Mountaineer’s Route with snowshoes, crampons, ropes, and ice axes was extended by a day. Ulrich reached the summit on Feb 27, 2021. Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is muscle pain that begins after you've worked out. It normally starts a day or two after a workout. You won't feel DOMS during a workout. Pain felt during or immediately after a workout is a different kind of muscle soreness. It's called acute muscle soreness. Daylight saving time (DST), also daylight savings time or daylight time (the United States and Canada) and summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time. The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in the spring ("spring forward") and set clocks back by one hour in autumn ("fall back", from the North American English word "fall" for autumn) to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in late winter or early spring and one 25-hour day in the autumn. In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure. This Vlog / Podcast documents my Sixth Decade of Endurance Training. The ultimate endurance athlete, Marshall Ulrich has run more than 130 ultramarathons averaging over 125 miles each, competed in 17 expedition-length adventure races, and climbed the Seven Summits all on his first attempts. https://marshallulrich.com/ #MarshallUlrich #Seven Summits #BadwaterToWhitneyFrom Marshall Ulrich At approximately 8 AM on February 21, 2020 I will be starting – to my knowledge the first ever – winter crossing from the Badwater basin, Whitney Portals, then on to the summit of Mt. Whitney. I anticipate this undertaking will take more than four days as this is more of an expedition than a traditional July/Aug crossing. My crossing of Death, Panamint, Owens Valleys will be straight forward, and will follow the typical route along the roads. Of course, it will be much cooler, and will end at approximately 131 miles/wherever the Portal Road is closed for the winter (the portal gate). This portion should take me about 48 hours. Dr. Bob Haugh and my wife, Heather Ulrich, will crew me across the desert. On the morning of February 24, Dr. Bob and I will begin the ascent of Mount Whitney via the Mountaineer’s Route. We will start at the portal gate closure location, led by Trevor Anthes from Sierra Mountaineering International (SMI). This is a true mountaineering expedition, requiring snowshoes, crampons, ropes, and ice axes. My goal as is always not to establish a speed record, but to show that it can be done. As such, it will take much more time and effort than a summer ascent of Whitney, and should only be attempted by experienced climbers. The plan is to establish a base camp (BC) at Upper Boy Scout Lake on the 24th and summit sometime on February 25th. The distance from the portal gate to the summit is about 9 miles, so the total distance for the winter crossing will be approximately 140 miles. The summit will be the finish of the attempt/stop the clock on the crossing. If we are successful in our summit, say at 2 PM on the 25th, the total crossing time should be approximately 4 days and 6 hours. We will return to BC that afternoon, then hike out to the portal gate the morning of the 26th; of course, these miles/time of the decent are not counted as part of the winter (nor any) crossing. https://linktr.ee/AND3RSON --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/andy-noise/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/andy-noise/support

Marshall Ulrich is an American ultramarathon runner, adventure racer mountaineer and author. He has completed 124 ultra marathons averaging over 100 miles each, has climbed the tallest summit on each continent (all on first attempts), a feat known as the seven summits, finished 12 expedition-length races in adventure racing and has written two books. He wrote "Running On Empty" back in 2011 and his most recent book "Both Feet On The Ground" in 2019. BTYS Studios does apologize for the quality of this recording. We filmed this episode at the height of COVID-19. We were not doing in person recordings and filmed this episode via Zoom. During the download of this podcast we had a technical issue and the host Brock Goldberg's mic did not transfer over correctly. Our team worked hard at extracting what we could and that is why it sounds like a bad phone call. The Human Lighthouse Experience Ep 6: Marshall Ulrich
The one where we say the say of the race that shall not be named. This weeks links Marshall Ulrich https://www.marshallulrich.com/index.html (you can find links to his book here) https://www.facebook.com/marshallulrich/ Badwater https://www.badwater.com/
Coach Kevin and Coach Holly interview ultrarunner and adventurer Marshall Ulrich about his adventures in the high altitude of Everest and the heat of Badwater and everything in between.
Lynn & Pete are joined by endurance runner Marshall Ulrich. Marshall has been a previous guest on The Mountain Life after he ran across America. Now he's back with a new book to inspire people to get outside for as long as they can especially during this time. It's called, BOTH FEET ON THE GROUND: REFLECTIONS FROM THE OUTSIDE.
Marshall has been there, and been doing that for decades. His output, especially for the hugely long routes, is prodigious (think running across the US). "What I was doing was kicking back and having fun. Showing people you can do more". "Kicking back and having fun"? Running across Death Valley a total of 29 times doesn't strike me as that much fun. But that's Marshall - taking humble understatement to a whole new level! Marshall exemplifies a theory of mine: "Hardcore people never think they are. They think what they do is normal, because hardcore is all they know. People who think they are hardcore rarely are." "My friend and I did 8 Eco-Challenges together. We thought of it as fun - we didn't think it was anything extraordinary." Yeah, right! Marshall also did Badwater (lowest point to highest point in the US) Unsupported Solo! He brought all his own water for the 146 mile crossing during July. How did he do that?? You're about to find out.
This week on the Run the Riot podcast: Marshall Ulrich! Marshall is a pioneer in ultrarunning. He's done so many amazing things: ECO challenges, climbing the 7 summits (including Everest), 29 crossings of Death Valley with 30 coming this year! It was a privilege to talk to him about his many adventures! You can listen here: http://www.theriot.run/marshallulrich/
Marshall Ulrich is an American legend. As a mountaineer, he's climbed the Seven Summits - completing each on his first attempt. The Seven Summits consist of Mount Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimajaro, Mount Elbrus, Mount Vinson, Puncak Jaya, and Mount Kosciuszko by order of elevation. Marshall has completed 130 ultra marathons, each over 100 miles in distance. Most notably, he's known for completing the formidable Badwater 135 ultra marathon across Death Valley 18 times - winning the event 4 times - including 3 in a row. Temperatures can reach 130 degrees F during this race in July.
I'm very excited to kick off Season Two of the Eat for Endurance Podcast with ultrarunner, mountaineer, adventure racer, speaker, and author, Marshall Ulrich. As an athlete, Marshall's list of accomplishments is impressive, to say the least (and still growing, too). Just to name a few: he has climbed Mount Everest, crossed Death Valley on foot (in July) a record 22 times, completed the Seven Summits all on first attempts, finished more than 100 ultramarathons averaging over 100 miles each, competed in all nine Eco-Challenge adventure races, and broke two transcontinental speed records at the age of 57 when he ran 3,063.2 miles in 52.5 days from San Francisco to New York. This last feat was the basis for his 2011 memoir, Running on Empty, which I read several years ago after meeting Marshall and highly recommend. I also thoroughly enjoyed his latest book, Both feet on the ground: Reflections from the Outside, which details his life on the farm and how it shaped his own approach to food and nutrition. Our conversation took us through a wide variety of topics, including:The disconnect between us and nature, and the role this plays on our relationship with food and health (i.e. confusion or obsession with eating the “right” foods). How being an endurance athlete means becoming an “expert in eating” Being a vegan vs omnivore (a particularly hot topic right now, especially in the endurance world)The extreme differences in fueling for his various events (e.g. climbing Mt. Everest vs Badwater vs Eco-Challenge)Becoming a role model for longevity in sport - staying active and strong through your 50s and 60sI hope you enjoy this episode and find some inspiration in our conversation! Last week I listened to this Human Potential Running Series Ultra Stories podcast. It was with a 30+ year veteran ultramarathoner, Marshall Ulrich. There was a phrase he mentioned when talking about one of his events where he had “no option to failure.” This got me thinking about the phrase above, “failure is not an option.” As I reflected on this statement I came up with a few stories and thoughts that I wanted to share with you. This episode talks about my perspective on this phrase and digs deeper into a lesson I’ve learned.
Take a run with host Sherpa John as he sits down with Kate Welle and Sam Wanger of Golden, CO as a follow up episode to last week's interview with Marshall Ulrich. In this episode the three discuss their experiences with Marshall on the night of Ultra Stories Live, and then they dive in to an experiential exercise they asked the audience to participate in with regards to their intentions with running. Sherpa and his co-hosts ask you to do your own homework in exploring the deeper reasons behind your own intentions in running ultras. A thoughtful and thought provoking episode on ultra.

Our guest has done some of the most amazing feats of endurance in the world. Some of them, beyond comprehension. And that's his mission. To prove that anything is possible by anyone. Trekking death valley, Everest, and even running across America are a few of his exploits. We go deeper though. What is a good why when it comes to adventure and running? What was his biggest achievement physically? What's next? We also delve into a bunch of non endurance topics. His advice on politics, money, relationships, drugs, and pretty much anything made the list. Enjoy this show from a wise and travelled athlete. You won't regret it.

I call him “Mr. Tenacity” because he is simply unstoppable. Marshall Ulrich is arguably the toughest endurance athlete in the world! At a ripe old age of 62 he just completed his 19 Badwater UltraMarathon across Death Valley. Tenacious I say? Who else would have his toe nails removed to liberate himself from the surety of toe nails getting in the way of his forward progress? In the fall of 2008, he attempted to break the world record for a trans-American crossing and completed a 3,063.2-mile run from San Francisco to New York in 52.5 days, equal to 117 marathons, or two marathons plus a 10K each day. The effort, which included many injuries and obstacles, was chronicled in the 2010 movie, Running America. This is a show you just don't want to miss!
Marshall Ulrich, ULTRArunner 3063 miles, 52 days and 57 years old. Those are the numbers you need to know about Marshall Ulrich’s run across the United States, but that barely scratches the surface of what he has achieved, so far. We proudly present our interview with Marshall. We cannot wait … The post Marshall Ulrich, ULTRArunner appeared first on Ultrarunnerpodcast.com.
