The Area 3 Championship match has a reputation for having a lot of goofy things you don't see at other matches such as a pool noodle car wash, tractor tires for shooting boxes, and shooting poppers at 50 yards that are spray painted brown. This year the match had a new match director, Matt Hopkins, and the stages and match were drastically different. Cody Axon, Jared Fox, and I discuss the match and how it compares to the previous years.

Whilst big retail isn't exactly going anywhere, we're seeing more and more that customers want something that mass-produced products and high street giants generally can't offer - to be part of a journey when it comes to the consumer experience. Whether it's getting their hands on something handmade and unique or voting with their wallet by buying locally and sustainably, consumers are savvy and know that it's small, independent businesses that they need to go to for gift-able treats, purpose-led products and exciting exclusives. But as you may have experienced yourself, getting in front of those potential customers is a whole other story - in today's episode we look at how bringing big retail and small brands together is ultimately a win-win for all involved. My guest today is Matt Hopkins who, whilst working for big retailers like John Lewis, met lots of great brands struggling to get their products to markets. It was on the back of this discovery that in 2014 Matt formed The Great British Exchange with the explicit goal of bringing the best of smaller British brands to a much broader customer base, from food and beverage to housewares, by offering various routes to market including traditional wholesale and in-store pop-ups. In episode 58 of The Resilient Retail Game Plan, we discuss the importance of stories, the power of selling face-to-face and how your success all comes down to preparation, research and execution. Late last year, the climate emergency was gaining real attention.Greta Thunberg addressed the UN with her now famous ‘How Dare You’ speech, school students marched through capital cities, and the summer’s devastating summer bushfires showed that something needs to be done. But since our world has been gripped by a pandemic, the discussion around climate change has taken somewhat of a backseat. And honestly, it can feel like the discussion is too big for us to personally help save the planet. With so many around us with relaxed attitudes to climate change, we can wonder how our own little changes can make a difference. The Not So Scary Truth About Opals Anne of Geierstein, also known as The Maiden of the Mist is a novel written by Sir Walter Scott, in 1829, and cast an unlucky shadow onto opal. The story told of a young princess who wore an opal pin in her hair. When she was happy, the opal radiated with its signature flashes of colors. When she was mad or sad, the opal faded in light and color. Convinced she was evil or bewitched, holy water was sprinkled onto the opal to break the jewel’s spell, and at once, the princess fainted and collapsed. The next morning, there was only a heap of gray ashes where she had been laid. From that point on, opal was believed to be bad luck, and it suffered in popularity. It regained attention and jewelry status to be pushed again by the jealous diamond industry, so it is speculated. Today, opal is enjoyed by many for its fiery display and wide variety. The most recent variety uncovered is a transparent, jelly variety, called Ethiopian opal. A listener of the podcast reached out to me about a few Ethiopian opal stones she has that have discolored to a duller orangey - yellow color, and asked if I could explain the change of appearance. I reached out to a few gemologists and specialists, MD Maya Gems, Diana Jarrett, G.G., and Matt Hopkins of Hopkins Opal. Matt spent some time with me on a phone conversation and explained why the opal changed color, and also clarified the controversial advice to either oil or keep your opals in water. Be sure to visit the website for the accompanying blog post that will feature links to the research, photos of opals and opal jewelry by Thesis Gems, Russell Trusso, and more!

This could come in the form of lower costs, access guarantees or lower order minimums, for example.2. Growing business. This is stuff like distribution support, expanded capacity, etc.3. Maximizing operations. You focus on brewing, while the co-op helps you get better back office rates on warehouse supplies, freight costs, credit card rates, etc.Legal aidHR supportQuality assurance and testingDiscounts on energyDiscounts on credit card ratesDiscounts on malts, hops, cans, bottles, kegsWebsite designSocial media and blog supportMarketing materialsBrewing capacityDiscounted access to expert outside capacityGetting tapsGetting shelf space (the most votes)How you can get involvedThe Independent Brewers Alliance definitely needs size — the goal is to represent 1 million bbls of buying power within the first 24 months (which would require some sizable regional players), with hopefully 300 to 400 members as the goal, preferably in that 5,000 to 50,000 bbls range. But a strong purchasing group needs quality as much as quantity. Vendors will want to know what the Independent Brewers Alliance stands for. The value of the co-op, from the vendors perspective, isn’t just in negotiating a discounting for volume, but in being a preferred vendor to a substantial group of outstanding, trustworthy companies.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel. Ben Stoeger is a five time national champion in USPSA (action pistol). He also is a world class competitor and firearms instructor. Ben has written several books on shooting, dry fire practice and live skill training. In addition he had time to produce two DVDs on shooting (“Training to Win” and “Practical Pistol Foundations”). Finally, Ben has his own podcast “the Practical Pistol Show” where he co-hosts with Matt Hopkins and sometimes Tim Herron (both who were on this podcast..). This is a replay of the interview I did with him on the 2016 Shooter's Summit. This is slightly edited for time and content. Matt Hopkins & Ben Lankester's feature doc follows five-piece rock band I Like Trains as they struggle to breakthrough after losing their record deal.
Matt Hopkins is a Grandmaster shooter in the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). He has competed since he was a young boy when his father took him to the local bowling pin matches. Matt's drive continued and once he became grandmaster, he was able to connect with a major firearms manufacturer, CZ-USA. Since 2010 he has not only been sponsored by CZ-USA, he also works for them. Matt is also a big thinker when it comes to shooting as well as the sport itself. He gets a platform on the successful Practical Pistol Show with Ben Stoeger to discuss his ideas which were actually implemented this past year in USPSA at matches. Matt finds the time amid his busy match schedule to teach firearms mostly individually to people who want to take their competition to the next level. This week on The Speakeasy, Damon is joined by two friends from Seersucker Brooklyn, chef/owner Robert Newton and bartender Matt Hopkins. Tune in and hear three professionals talk shop and highlight some incredible wines coming from New York, Virginia and other overlooked regions in America. They taste a few wines on air and lament over the fact that some people still come into the coolest bars in the world and ask for Vodka & Cranberry juice! Get a behind-the-scenes look at the way modern restaurantuers and bartenders are thinking and what trends they see ahead. This program was sponsored by The International Culinary Center. “There’s some really good wine from Virginia and I’m doing everything I can to get more of it here.” [10:37] “Not every wine needs to be a Bourdeaux or a $200 Burgundy – just enjoy it and taste it!” [25:51] ## –Robert Newton, Chef/Owner of Seersucker and Matt Hopkins, Bartender at Seersucker
