It's just us boys on this pod, testing out our new mics and recording software, beginning to drift imperceptibly away from our lo-fi roots & thus our scruffy charm and ultimately, our integrity. But for now we're talking about trauma! As listeners who follow us on so-called Twitter probably know, Lauren was attacked on the Metro by a mentally ill man a couple weeks ago and wrote a very famous 4000 word essay about  it in the style of Knausgaard, kind of. ALSO: We finally return to the Book and finish Part One, a miracle praise Adonai. HOUSEKEEPING: We have a google voice number now for you to leave messages for our eventual call-in episode.  It is 443-584-6486 cheat sheet: 0:00 - Lauren is eating a gluten free snickerdoodle; Drew reflects on his appreciation of the Steppe and its peoples. 9:30 - The trauma unpacking begins; Lauren ever so briefly lets down her defenses, reveals a crack in her facade or a chink in her armor, or is it a soft underbelly? At any rate vulnerability is definitely momentarily glimpsed. Drew interviews Lauren about her anti-trauma-essay and Lauren uses the phrase "brain colonized by X" about 8,000,000 times. 40:00 - Drew reflects on his recent trauma of being initiated into the "dripping wound" that is Twitter. We try to probe what exactly makes Twitter so alienating and upsetting - why is it not a utopian collaborative literary exercise? Something to do maybe with commodification or narcissism, two intimately linked phenomena of course.... 57:00 - We have our first struggle session in a long time (bless me Father for I have sinned); Karl Ove takes Hanne to the DSA meeting; springtime arrives but not in an annoying way; Karl Ove attends his father's weird divorced Midsommar-like party/ritual and Part One ends. What a ride! Thanks so much for listening! As always feel free to reach out with your questions, comments, and expressions of concern/solidarity at teixeira.lauren@gmail.com or deohringer@gmail.com. And do stay tuned for a special guest next week...... OUTRO: The Stranglers- Golden Brown

Jim Rogers has been there and done that. He co-founded the Quantum Fund with George Soros in 1973 which later became one of the most successful funds ever created returning over $32 Billion to its investors over the decades. Retiring from Wall Street at age 37, he rode his motorcycle across China from 1990-1992 before ANYONE was talking about China and wrote the bestselling book "Investment Biker" describing his journey. He is legit, I remember the Wall Street traders talking Jim up when I started my career at Bankers Trust in 1993. Since then he's circumnavigated the globe AGAIN and become very bullish on agriculture, commodities, China, Russian, and, wait for it, North Korea! Jim likes to look at his investments on a very long time horizon. As he tells me on the show, "no matter what you think is true today it's not going to be the case in 15 years."

Plus, we dive into what being a “fashion influencer” really means (hint: we're calling it "lifestyle curator" now). We laugh, we cry—and you won't want to miss any of it.

It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

If you live in New Orleans, you know one thing for sure: Summer here lasts a long time. It can start getting hot as early as Jazz Fest and some years it's still hot at Thanksgiving. Because of the long Summer, we've gotten pretty good at dressing for the weather here. Did you know New Orleans is the home of the seersucker suit? Seersucker was originally a lightweight fabric that was used in India to make clothing for laborers. In 1909, New Orleanian Joseph Haspel designed the first men's suit made of seersucker. The seersucker suit went on to become a fashion staple. The label in the suit simply said, Haspel. Today, the company is still called Haspel. They still make seersucker suits, and other menswear items. Haspel is still a family company, and Joseph Haspel's great-grand-daughter, Laurie Haspel Aronson, is its President and CEO . When it comes to the creation of local men's summer weight clothing, the clock didn't stop in 1909. In 2018 Claiborne Schmidt was inspired by the traditional Guayabera shirt and created a New Orleans version. The traditional Guayabera shirt is sometimes called the Mexican wedding shirt, though it's widely believed to have originated in Cuba. It's a short sleeve shirt that's worn untucked, and traditionally has two rows of closely sewn vertical pleats that run down the shirt, mimicking the look of a scarf if it was hung around your neck. Claiborne has given his guayabera shirt a New Orleans twist. The pleats are replaced with an embroidered pattern. There are a bunch of different styles. One with crawfish and trumpets, one with a Saints theme, one with a festival theme, there's a Mardi Gras one, and more. The label on the shirts say, Dat Mambo Shirt. In the short time they've been in existence, Dat Mambo Shirts have become a local fashion success story. Seersucker & Summer Linens are the seasonal fashion theme for this ride. Wear your finest seersucker, linens, hats and caps. Be sure to bring your signature style. Participants are invited to be social, relax, enjoy light refreshments & live music. Merchandise will be available for registered riders. Registration at https://www.historicalrenaissanceride... The Newark Historical Renaissance Ride is a signature experience celebrating cycling advocacy and the cultural and historic heritage of America’s great urban cities. A passion project for the three partners who serve as visionaries and volunteers for the organization and its experiences. Hassan Abdus-Sabur - Co-Founding Partner Abdus-Sabur is co-founder of the Newark Historical Renaissance Ride. A 4th Generation Newarker, Hassan has always been politically and socially active in his community. He is the official NHRR official route historian, Hassan is a frequent fixture at Newark Public Library and the New Jersey Historical Society researching the rich History of his much loved hometown of Newark in preparation of presentation of the Newark Historical Renaissance Ride experience. Paul Chinnery Co-Founding Partner Lifestyle photographer Paul Chinnery, has long held a passion for capturing authentic imagery. Paul attended Howard University where he would continue to develop his craft in visual arts. Paul returned to NJ in the late 1990’s to discover a largely undocumented photo canvas in the city of Newark, NJ. Now able to view it with a finer tuned eye and inspired by his interest in architecture, Paul was intrigued by the raw aesthetic and rich history which was previously overlooked. “What makes the Renaissance Ride experience distinctive from other events is that we add a history, culture, and swag to a ride in which participants don traditionally historic themed attire such as tweed or seersucker. In addition, by making our beloved city the focal point, and incorporating both historical and cultural aspects into the bike tour. My goal is the same as my photo one- to change the narrative, one event or picture at a time.” Delanie West - Partner A whitespace visionary and transformational c-suite leader, Delanie is a hands-on creative with 20 years of award-winning management of brand, product development, design, creative lifestyle and consumer experience. An Alumna of Hampton University, she is a leisure cyclist and triathlete and instantly recognized the importance of presenting this unique experience, a blend of urban cycling, history and culture. Delanie served as member of the operating headquarters team as well as Creative Director for Black Girls RUN! during its infancy, developing content, iconography and merchandise for the international running group.

Baton Rouge may not be the first place you think of in connection with high fashion. But there s one notable exception Haspel. It s the company that invented the seersucker suit more than a century ago. Today Haspel continues to redefine that classic staple of the southern wardrobe, while also designing some of the trendiest and most sought after looks for fashion conscious gentlemen. Laurie Aaronson is President of Haspel, and the granddaughter of the company s founder, Joseph Haspel. While Haspel has a long and venerable tradition in the fashion world, an upstart company with a focus on footwear is also starting to gain notice. The company is Sorority Inspired Sandals and, as its name implies, its makes stylish sandals that bear the logos of Greek organizations. The products are becoming a must have item for sororities throughout the SEC and S.I.S is hatching plans to sell beyond the sorority sisters. Dene Mathies, along with her daughter, is co founder of Sorority Inspired Sandals. Richard Hanley doesn t have anything to do with high fashion or footwear but he s a Baton Rouge entrepreneur who, like Laurie and Dene, has a passion for his product. Richard has a line of salad dressings, Hanley s, that can be found on the shelves of more than 300 supermarkets, which is pretty impressive considering he started out less than four years ago. Hanleys Foods is getting ready to go national and, as Richard puts it, "take down Hidden Valley." Photos on this page at Mansur s On the Bouevard by Ken Stewart.
